Patheos-Pagan: Animism and the Power of Waterfalls

Waterfalls are places of spiritual power. On some level, most people can sense this to be true. Maybe we cannot express exactly that uplifting feeling inside. Maybe we just rush on to the next thing. But for those of us who stay and really feel, waterfalls provide not just a sense of wonder, but a way to expand our own spirits.

Inner Journey:

PRACTICE DETACHMENT

As our consciousness rises, our perspective becomes more and more impersonal. What does this mean?

It means we are increasingly able to view our lives and the rest of the world with detachment. This does not mean we are cold and uncaring. Rather, we are self- contained. We have well-defined boundaries and we are able to think and act objectively, clearly and responsibly.

When we have learned detachment, we do not get hooked into the thoughts and feelings of others. We are not easily upset or manipulated. We may feel compassion for others but this does not cloud our ability to choose how we think, feel and behave. We also do not need others to behave in any particular way.

“Until we take how we see ourselves (and how we see others) into account, we will be unable to understand how others see and feel about themselves and their world. Unaware, we will project our intentions on their behavior and call ourselves objective.”
— Stephen Covey

Daily Good: The Universe as an Infinite Storm of Beauty

Taking a walk in a quiet woods, gazing up into the night sky, or even walking in a crowd in a large city somewhere in the world, we may find ourselves having transcendent moments along with John Muir. These moments awaken us to our place within the universe at the same time that they disorient us as we realize how small we are. In this piece, writer Maria Popova helps us to see through John Muir’s eyes that our smallness is what connects us so universally to everything else that is. In being humbled, no longer do we get lost in the illusion that humans dominate creation. With Muir as our guide, we can realize that we are joined to everything else in creation.

FEELING TRAPPED? SLOW DOWN!

“If you’re having difficulty coming up with new ideas, then slow down. For me, slowing down has been a tremendous source of creativity. It has allowed me to open up — to know that there’s life under the earth and that I have to let it come through me in a new way. Creativity exists in the present moment. You can’t find it anywhere else.”
— Natalie Goldberg

Feeling trapped in some way? Give yourself space. Space to do nothing but breathe. To intentionally relax those tight muscles. To just for a few precious minutes, let it all go.

The world will keep turning if you tune out for a short while. And your world will begin to recover its balance.

“It’s important to be heroic, ambitious, productive, efficient, creative, and progressive, but these qualities don’t necessarily nurture soul. The soul has different concerns, of equal value: downtime for reflection, conversation, and reverie; beauty that is captivating and pleasuring; relatedness to the environs and to people; and any animal’s rhythm of rest and activity.”

Inner Journey:

WORK WITH TENSION

“You never will be the person you can be if pressure, tension and discipline are taken out of your life.”
— James G. Bilkey

We need tension in our lives. It’s the force of personal evolution — it sparks creativity and higher consciousness. If we’re not comfortable with a situation, we try to improve it, right?

Tension arises through our experience of opposites. These opposites fight each other as each one struggles for dominance. Tension is transformed when two opposite dimensions of reality are brought together in balance and in wholeness.

Know that tension is an integral part of growth. Instead of avoiding or resisting tension when it arises, identify the opposing forces at play. Make space for each of them to be there together and the tension will transform.

We encounter tensions between positives and negatives, mind and body, self and environment, self and others, and personality and soul – the dualities in our lives.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

-Theresa Helburn
Lifework. Isn’t all of life work at times?! Commitment does take work, but because we get so much out of what we put into it, it becomes a pleasure. THE KEY TO CREATIVITY

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge islimited. Imagination encircles the world.”
— Albert Einstein

Do you know the key to creativity?

It rhymes with weed. It produces the oak tree. We often eat it or grind it up for flour. It can mean cause or origination. You guessed it. It is SEED.

Our minds love to associate one thing to another. But as we get stuck in very fixed patterns of thinking, we think of fewer and fewer connections. We are ruled by habits, associations and automatic responses. So we must stimulate our thinking with lots of different seeds to chart new paths in our brains.

“Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive.”
— Napoleon Hill

Commitment
“If you don’t make a total commitment to whatever you’re doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. It’s tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stand up and starts putting his life jacket on.”

-Lou Holtz
Lou Holtz is the well-known football coach, and he’s talking about teamwork, and the importance of commitment to the team. The analogy he uses is great because it’s so visual – and you can see how one person’s lack of commitment affects those around him.

I was thinking about the commitment our ancestors made when coming to this country. Can you imagine the courage it took to leave home for somewhere, something unknown – the possibility of something better? Once they set out in that “boat” there was no turning back. If we could only have that courage, that commitment, in our own lives to just “go for it!” Yes, there are risks – that comes with the territory, but like another saying goes: “no risks, no rewards!”

We’ve got nothing against the soothing smells associated with a massage, but aromatherapy actually brings so much more to the table in terms of natural, holistic ways to boost physical and mental health.

Daily Good: The Wisdom of Circles: In Conversation with John Malloy

John Malloy tends fires. He is a guardian of safe spaces where people gather. John began tending fires in this spirit as a county probation senior group counselor. He then co-founded The Foundry, a school for kids who had been in jail. John currently works as an Intervention Specialist in schools and leads an Intergenerational Support Group for people challenged by grief and trauma. For over fifty years, he has anchored circles that tap into the power of silence, compassion, deep listening and a full presence. In this interview, he shares his experience of what it takes to bring “medicine” to the circle. In leading circles, John says that, “people care how much you care…It doesn’t matter (who is in the circle); you just have to present yourself with authenticity.”

Thought.Co: History of Imbolc

Imbolc is a holiday with a variety of names, depending on which culture and location you’re looking at. In the Irish Gaelic, it’s called Oimelc, which translates to “ewe’s milk.” It’s a precursor to the end of winter when the ewes are nursing their newly born lambs. Spring and the planting season are right around the corner.

Inner Journey:

5 STEPS TO SELF-ACTUALIZATION

“Every human action, whether it has become positive or negative, must depend on motivation.”
— Dalai Lama

Monitoring what motivates me has helped me see how I am growing. I do things for different reasons now than I did 10 years ago. As we pay ongoing attention to our motives, we can see how both our conscious and unconscious attitudes are changing.

Here are some ways that our motives can shift with rising consciousness:
• I desire
• I want to collect things
• I want to know
• I want to serve
• I want to be

What are your motives as you participate in life?

“There are three kinds of people and three kinds of richness:
• people who want to have, to collect
• people who want action, work and labor
• people who want to be

“The real richness is in be-ness. People can take all that you have, all that you collected. People can stop your labor, or an accident can stop you. When you are, you never lose what you are.”
— Torkom Saraydarian

“You are what you think. You are what you go for. You are what you do!”
— Bob Richards

“A good intention clothes itself with power.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

DON’T THINK AWAY YOUR FEELINGS

“When emotions are managed by the heart, they heighten your awareness of the world around you and add sparkle to life. The result is new intelligence and a new view of life.”
— Doc Childre and Howard Martin

How do you intellectualize your emotions?

Many of us live so much in our heads that we intellectualize our emotions. We analyze, rationalize and explain them away so quickly that we don’t actually experience them.

Learn to honour your emotions at all times by being willing to feel them. Of course, you may need to exercise some judgment over how and when you express them.

Reflection helps us step back from the details of our lives and see the bigger picture with fresh eyes. It’s worth a few moments of your time. Review your week and come up with at least one conclusion, insight or learning and write it in your journal.

Inner Journey:

OPEN TO TRUST

“When I grip the wheel too tight, I find I lose control.”
— Steve Rapson

WE SEEK TO CONTROL OUR LIVES WHEN WE DO NOT TRUST, WHEN WE DO NOT LOVE. Our ego, perceiving itself to be vulnerable and insecure, uses control in an effort to protect itself.

At the root of our need to control, we find FEAR. It may be fear of the unknown. Fear of not coping. Fear of loss. Or possibly even fear of looking stupid. And as our efforts to control other people and events invariably fail, our fear increases.

Trust, on the other hand, is a quality of the soul. While control is a tool of the mind, TRUST AND FAITH ARE ASPECTS OF THE HEART. Trust comes with the deep knowing that we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. When we trust enough in life to give up our need to control, we can relax and open to the flow of energy in our lives. This brings peace of mind.

“The only real security in life lies in relishing life’sinsecurity.”
— M. Scott Peck

“Do not abandon trust when your ego thinks things should be different than they are.”
— Wayne Dyer

Truth

“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.”

-Mark Twain (1835-1910)
Of course, we know that there are infinite possibilities, but in our human experience we can only conjure up a portion of the possibilities based on what we’ve been exposed to. That’s why when some things happen we just can’t believe it – we can’t comprehend how such a thing could happen. But when we seek the truth, through prayer and meditation and spiritual practices, we see many more possibilities. We open up to answers and solutions that were once beyond our realm of understanding.

Daily Good: Mary Oliver: Instructions for Living A Life

Mary Oliver was one of the most beloved poets of our times. A writer who was dazzled by her daily experience of life, and dazzled the rest of us by telling about it in her poems and essays. She deliberately stayed out of the public eye and what follows is one of her rare interviews — a conversation with On Being’s Krista Tippett. Read on for a glimpse of the remarkable woman who once wrote: “When it’s over, I want to say: all my life/I was a bride married to amazement./I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms

MNN: 6 facts about the strikingly beautiful snowy owl

Snowy owls, despite their white plumage that allows them to blend into their Arctic surroundings, are easily recognizable. They’re beloved as a symbol of winter and as a companion to Harry Potter.
The image above, snapped by Shayna Hartley, was the result of plenty of patience on Hartley’s part.

EarthSky News: Venus-Jupiter conjunction on January 22

Before sunrise on January 22, 2019, look eastward or in the general direction of sunrise to see the conjunction of the planets Venus and Jupiter in the predawn/dawn sky. At conjunction, these two brilliant worlds shine north and south of one another on the sky’s dome, with Jupiter passing 2.5 degrees south of Venus. You simply can’t miss these two brilliant beauties, because Venus and Jupiter rank as the 3rd-brightest and 4th-brightest celestial bodies, respectively, after the sun and moon.

Patheos-Pagan: Imbolc Ritual: Honoring the Sacred Fire

The wheel of the year turns. By Imbolc, the sunlight is returning! Every day, the sun rises a little earlier, making our days grow longer and giving us more visibility. At this sacred time of the year, the point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, we honor Brigid and the warmth in our homes and hearths.

Inner Journey:

REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM

“We focus on the negatives, losing ourselves in the ‘problem.’ We point to our unhappy circumstances to rationalize our negative feelings. This is the easy way out. It takes, after all, very little effort to feel victimized.”
— Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

Nothing and no one can make us a victim. We do it to ourselves when we allow external circumstances to hold power over us.

Although we have no control over what happens to us, we ALWAYS have a choice in how we respond. We hold our power when we accept complete responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and actions.

“A man may fall many times but he won’t be a failure until he says someone pushed him.”
— Elmer G. Letterman

“The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”

A Note from the Universe

Too often the only difference between HAVE and HAVE NOT depends on whether or not the initial request was followed by a thank you, yee-haa, and action, rather than a question mark, timidity, and TV.

Don’t ask. Give thanks. Bust a move.

Truth

“This is the character of truth: it is of all time, it is for all men, it has only to show itself to be recognized, and one cannot argue against it”

-Voltaire (1694-1778)
Truth is the great clarifier. I think of Jack Nicholson in “A Few Good Men” being grilled on the witness stand by Tom Cruise – it’s obvious that Jack’s covering something because the pieces aren’t falling into place. And he gets frustrated and yells at Tom: “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!” It’s one of those great moments in film where you get that “ah-ha!” and then the truth comes out. The truth might not always be pretty – but it is what it is, and it wants to be discovered.

Thought.Co : Hold an Imbolc Candle Ritual for Solitaries

Hundreds of years ago, when our ancestors relied upon the sun as their only source of light, the end of winter was met with much celebration. Although it is still cold in February, often the sun shines brightly above us, and the skies are often crisp and clear. As a festival of light, Imbolc came to be called Candlemas. On this evening, when the sun has set once more, call it back by lighting the seven candles of this ritual.

Thought.Co : Celebrating Imbolc With Kids

Imbolc is a festival of fire and light – it’s one of the cross quarter days – and falls on February 2 in the northern hemisphere (it’ll be on August 1 if you’re one of our readers below the equator). This the time when winter is beginning to wind down, but it’s still cold and snowy; spring is looming around the corner, but isn’t quite here yet

Elephant Journal: The Powerful Impact Yin & Softness can have on our Fiery Lives.

Serenity is an acquired taste, my therapist told me on a crisp Autumn day last year.
Back then, as the brilliant leaves fell and the trees turned bare, I had no idea what she meant. Maybe I didn’t yet care.

Now, I believe her.
Serenity is not a taste I even wanted until recently. I couldn’t fathom it, really

Inner Journey:

COMMUNICATING WITHOUT WORDS

“The gesture is the thing truly expressive of the individual – as we think so will we act.”
— Martha Graham

Every movement and non-movement we make is a form of communication.

How do you communicate fear, withdrawal, avoidance, shutting down, disagreeing, and an uncaring attitude?

If you aren’t sure, others can probably tell you. Begin to pay attention to what your eyes and arms and facial expressions communicate. Our body language speaks louder than our words.

“An avoidance of true communication is tantamount to a relinquishment of my self-being; if I withdraw from it I am betraying not only the other but myself.”

Today’s Recipe: Cleansing Veggie Date Juice

I especially like making this juice after the holidays as I tend to indulge a bit more. Just a bit! This drink is very low in calories yet very filling. It’s full of vitamins, potassium, and antioxidants. Keep the “meat” of the veggies after juicing them to make cakes and spaghetti sauces. In order to keep the drink tasting fun and almost caramel-like, I like to blitz in some dates. Nothing bad in this juice
