After a frustrating few weeks, the Sagittarius new moon arrives just one day after trickster Mercury, the messenger planet that governs communication, technology, and travel, stationed direct (forward) in secretive Scorpio—and not a moment too soon! Outspoken, tell-it-like-it-is Sagittarius gives us the cosmic permission slip to start speaking our minds once again.

EarthSky News: N. Hemisphere? Watch for earliest sunsets

The year’s earliest sunset for 40 degrees N. latitude happens around December 7; and in the Southern Hemisphere, the year’s earliest sunrise at 40 degrees S. latitude happens around December 7, as well. The exact date of the Northern Hemisphere’s earliest sunset and the Southern Hemisphere’s earliest sunrise varies by latitude. But, at temperate latitudes, both of these annual hallmarks in our sky come a few to several weeks before the December solstice, not on the solstice as you might expect

Patheos-Pagan: Everyday Sacredness

Tendrils of smoke swirl around in the evening air, as the familiar scents of sage and cedar envelop me with their calm, cleansing energy. I return the smudge stick to its bowl and gaze at the glowing embers, already feeling my mind and body release the cares of the day. A drum beats softly in the distance, and I hear forest creatures rustling in the underbrush. The full moon beams her soft rays down to the sleeping earth, and I soak them in, feeling grateful for this moment.

OPEN YOUR HANDS

“More than any other part of the body, our hands reveal our inner state.”
— Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov

Today, be aware of how you hold your hands when you’re not actively doing something with them.

With the stress of our daily lives, many of us find our hands typically clenched in fists. This is proof of the tension we hold in our bodies. And ponder this: how can we receive the abundance of life if our hands are not open to receive it?

When you become aware that your hands are closed tight, stretch your fingers and spread them wide in the shape of a starfish. Deep breathing will also help you relax into the moment.

“What is always speaking silently is the body.”

Change

“A person can run for years but sooner or later he has to take a stand in the place which, for better or worse, he calls home, do what he can to change things there.”

-Paule Marshall (1969)

It is our nature, and really our responsibility, to change things for the better. Some causes resonate with us, we are compelled to help, we can’t help it. Some causes come to us – through an illness, or a friend or relative whom we love. There is always some way we can invoke change, some way we can make a difference. When something moves you, go with it as an opportunity to learn and grow, and change the world.

There is so much truth in this… I’ve been getting Christmas catalogs in the mail since August! Our society has gotten so retail oriented, so marketing savvy, that we’re always months ahead of ourselves. Whether it’s holiday sales, or movie previews, or upcoming specials, we’ve been trained to think ahead or be left behind. So we can’t really enjoy the moment we’re in because we’re too busy planning for the time that’s yet to come. How sad. But we can do something about it! Resolve to live in the now. Experience this moment of time fully. Now is the only time there is

SPIRITUAL PATHWAYS

“In any way that men love me in that same way they find my love: for many are the paths of men, but they all in the end come to me.”
— Song of God, Bhagavad Gita

Spirit – the life force – exists in everything. It follows, then, that ANY path, any encounter is spiritual if we have the awareness to see it as such. Going deeper, going higher, emptying, connecting, believing or disbelieving, bouncing off the bottom, experiencing the heights, in pain, in ecstasy ….

Too often, we search afar for our own purpose when it is in our lives all the time, waiting for us to express it more openly. Bring greater awareness to each encounter and situation in life. Tune in to what you are inspired to do, who you are inspired tobe. Your answers are waiting for you to pay attention – every moment!

As we plunge into the shadows of the unseen universe within ourselves, our eyes, as well as our inner vision, will eventually adjust to the darkness. It is here where we can begin to finally see the light, as parts of ourselves that were once hidden are revealed. New moons are typically invisible to the naked eye, but we can look to the dark night sky as though it were a blank canvas—symbolic for new beginnings and intention setting.

“At the heart of caring is an ‘and’ not an ‘or’. Deep within us lies a potential that transcends our artificial limitations. Can we embrace the possibility that we are fully capable of caring globally, in every direction — that the compass of our caring could open 360 degrees?” In his new book ‘Caring’ Tibetan lama Tarthang Thulku dives deep into an exploration of caring the potent antidote it offers to the ills of our time. The following excerpt, authored by his daughter shares thoughts on how to create a more caring world.

There is a long history of witches working with fairies in various ways, both learning from them and being in service to them. In modern paganism we more often see this relationship played out very differently, with the Good Folk being approached from a more ceremonial magic perspective or treated as a kind of spirit guide or ally.

Inner Journey:

WHAT IS LOVE?

“When mystics use the word love, they use it very carefully — in the deeply spiritual sense, where to love is to know; to love is to act. If you really love, from the depths of your Consciousness, that love gives you a native wisdom. You perceive the needs of others intuitively and clearly, with detachment from any personal desires; and you know how to act creatively to meet those needs, dexterously surmounting any obstacle that comes in the way. Such is the immense, driving power of love.”
— Eknath Easwaran

“Therefore, when I say that ‘I love,’ it is not I who love, but in reality Love who acts through me. Love is not so much something I do as something that I am. Love is not a doing but a state of being – a relatedness, a connectedness to another mortal, an identification with her or him that simply flows within me and through me, independent of my intentions or my efforts.”
— Robert A. Johnson

“When you are aware that you are the force that is Life, anything is possible. Miracles happen all the time, because those miracles are performed by the heart. The heart is in direct communion with the human soul, and when the heart speaks, even with the resistance of the head, something inside you changes; your heart opens another heart, and true love is possible.”
— Don Miguel Ruiz

Beauty

“I pray thee, O God, that I may be beautiful within.” -Socrates

Ah, Socrates! Wisdom is beautiful! You are beautiful! Who would argues that this great philosopher wasn’t beautiful? It’s like a supermodel wishing to be more photogenic. We are all beautiful simply because we ARE. We are here, on this beautiful planet. We cannot be MORE beautiful, because we are already all that. Yet we can recognize that beauty, cultivate it, cherish it. We can express beauty, and show gratitude for it.

IT’S A MATTER OF BALANCE.

“My soul is the bridge between spirit and body and, as such, is a uniter of opposites. …Without soul at center, I would either transcend into spirit or become mired in matter.”
— Marion Woodman

Ram Dass talks of how his first spiritual goal was to be rid of his physical existence. He came to understand, though, that our spirituality lies in bringing higher consciousness to our world of form. When we can do so, we can delight in all aspects of creation.

Soul exists in the balance of spirit and matter. For a soulful life, we pay attention to both, seeing spiritual qualities in material forms. As our awareness grows, we begin to use consciousness to influence and create form. It’s through form that our spirit expresses.

Self-Knowledge

“A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us.”

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Sometimes one single event is all it takes to totally wake us up to the Truth that is here all the time. But for most of us, it is a process that gradually unfolds, giving us clues, hints, and glimpses of Reality in small doses so that we can assimilate them into our lives. We become familiar with who we are, we get to know ourselves day by day, as we come to understand and accept that we are much more than the roles we play.

Using Trees for Navigation:

For those who know their tree facts, navigation becomes a much easier task. Moss grows on the shadier side of a tree trunk, so in northern climates, you’ll know the side with the most moss is the north side. And if you find a tree stump, even better. Tree rings do more than reveal a tree’s age − in the northern hemisphere, the growth rings are slightly thicker on the southern side, since this is the part of the tree which receives the most light. In the southern hemisphere, the opposite will be true, so expect moss on the southern side and thicker rings on the northern while in southern climes.

FREE TO CHOOSE

“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”
— Sigmund Freud

In his book Nobody’s Victim, Christopher J. McCullough explains, “In order to live your freedom, you must first accept reality. ‘These are the choices, and given those choices, which do I choose?’ Whether the option you select is pleasant or painful does not alter the fact that, given reality, this is your preference.

“To live your freedom, it is helpful to stop and ask yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and then notice whether, given the options, you are choosing what you really want, or whether you want to choose something else…. Sometimes the exercise of freedom involves naming your poison — all choices may lead to outcomes that are in some way painful. But the real pain is that of feeling powerless — denying your freedom.”

“Freedom is man’s capacity to take a hand in his own development. It is our capacity to mold ourselves.”

Inner Journey:

OPEN TO TRUST

“When I grip the wheel too tight, I find I lose control.”
— Steve Rapson

WE SEEK TO CONTROL OUR LIVES WHEN WE DO NOT TRUST, WHEN WE DO NOT LOVE. Our ego, perceiving itself to be vulnerable and insecure, uses control in an effort to protect itself.

At the root of our need to control, we find FEAR. It may be fear of the unknown. Fear of not coping. Fear of loss. Or possibly even fear of looking stupid. And as our efforts to control other people and events invariably fail, our fear increases.

Trust, on the other hand, is a quality of the soul. While control is a tool of the mind, TRUST AND FAITH ARE ASPECTS OF THE HEART. Trust comes with the deep knowing that we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. When we trust enough in life to give upour need to control, we can relax and open to the flow of energy in our lives. This brings peace of mind.

“The only real security in life lies in relishing life’s insecurity.”
— M. Scott Peck

“Do not abandon trust when your ego thinks things should be different than they are.”

Forgiveness

“To err is human; to forgive, divine.” -Alexander Pope

I’ve heard this quote dozens of times, but I never knew who said it! We are spiritual beings living in human form. We are capable of all things divine – and prone to all things human. We make mistakes. We mess up, we blow it – and sometimes stupidly, too. But the divine in us knows that this is all a part of the process, that we are growing and learning and finding our way every day. When we forgive ourselves, and others, we are tapping into that pure potential of divinity within each one of us.

EarthSky News: Watch after sunrise for a daytime moon

The Northern Hemisphere’s full Hunter’s Moon has passed. The moon is now in a waning gibbous phase, rising in the east later and later each evening. That means you can catch the moon over your western horizon after sunrise in the coming days. Sylvia asked:

Patheos-Pagan: Relationships With Spirits And Deities Is Part of Success In Magic
Developing relationships with spirits, daimons, and/or deities who are relevant to your life are a major key to magic. I owe a good portion of my own success on cultivating connections with deities such as Hekate and Hermes, and obviously maintaining existing strong ones are always of benefit, too

Inner Journey:

REMEMBER YOUR SPIRITUAL SIDE

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”
— Soren Kierkegaard

Reminding ourselves often of our spiritual natures truly changes the quality of our lives. It helps us relax, slow down, lighten up, and generally find more space and joy in life.

When we get down on ourselves or life, we can pull back and ask, “How might my soul regard this situation? What am I being invited to experience?”

This shift in perspective helps us let go of the resistance that always comes with negativity. As energy once again begins to flow, our outlook brightens.

“Spirituality is the sacred center out of which all life comes, including Mondays and Tuesdays and rainy Saturday afternoons in all their mundane and glorious detail. … The spiritual journey is the soul’s life comminglingwith ordinary life.”
— Christina Baldwin

“It is not my business to think about myself. My business is to think about God. It is for God to think about me.”
— Simone Weil

A Note from the Universe

About the ground rules… You know, “paying your dues,” “opportunity only knocking once,” and “early birds getting the worms.”

Well, they were all made up by loving parents who wanted more for their kids than they ever had, yet who knew absolutely nothing of life’s magic, conspiring elements, and other sundry woo-woo.

Yeah, let’s blow their loving minds.

Whooohooooooo!

Forgiveness

“Dream of your brother’s kindnesses instead of dwelling in your dreams on his mistakes. Select his thoughtfulness to dream about instead of counting up the hurts he gave.”

-A Course in Miracles

Whatever we turn our attention to increases. So focusing on the good increases the good. Our “reality” is just a perception of things as they are – so choose to look at what we want more of. There is always more than one way of seeing, or thinking about someone or someone’s behavior.

Beliefnet: 6 Body Positive Moments that Inspired Us
People are taking a stand against the unrealistic expectations of our beauty culture.

We can remember as little girls flipping through fashion magazines and viewing all the skinny models and actresses on the glossy pages. Looking in wonder and wanting to emulate these false images, many young girls erroneously believed that all women need to be skinny or something must be wrong with them.

Patheos-Pagan: Celebrating Hermes, Messenger God & Guide Of Souls, On Samhain
Hermes is the messenger of the gods in the Greek pantheon, “angelos ton theon” or “Angelos Athanatôn“. He’s also known as psychopompos, or psychopomp which means “guide of souls”. Like Hekate, he is a god of traveling between the worlds, and is a god of travel in general. Both of these deities are strongly connected with one another. So it’s fairly straightforward why in addition to recommending Hekate as a good deity to honor during Samhain, I also recommend giving Hermes his due.

Inner Journey:

LET GO OF THE PAST

“Your journey has molded you for your greater good, and it was exactly what it needed to be. Don’t think that you’ve lost time. There is no short-cutting to life. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is right on time.”
— Asha Tyson

No regrets. As we become more aware, we begin to realize that there’s a purpose to everything that happens. This builds our trust, and supports us in being willing to be more open and daring to really experience life as it unfolds.

If we pay attention to what’s happening in each moment, we will discover that life continually brings us opportunities to heal our past wounds. When a painful memory surfaces, we can take the time to feel it fully, give compassion to ourselves and any others and allow the energy to release. As we deal with the past in this way IN THE PRESENT, we free ourselves to more fully connect with life.

“The next message you need is right where you are.”
— Ram Dass

A Note from the Universe

For millennia the path to enlightenment has been made up of many steps.

Most commonly, it begins with festering misunderstandings that lead to pain, the pain then leads to growth, growth leads to clarity, clarity leads to fun, fun leads to joy, and joy leads to true illumination.

May I recommend skipping to the fun part?

Love you forever –

Today’s Recipe: Avocado Quick Bread

I had a couple avocados that had been in the fridge for a few extra days. I thought they might be a bit too old, they weren’t, but I was committed to trying to make quick bread. I found this recipe on the tablespoon.com site and then changed it up a tiny bit. If I make it again I will definitely add chopped walnuts. The batter had a delightful flowery aroma and the bread itself is delicious.

Forgiveness

“Forgive all who have offended you, not for them, but for yourself.” -Harriet Uts Nelson

When we hold on to our grudges, when we refuse to forgive, the only one we are really hurting is ourself. Why cause ourselves unnecessary pain? Where is the spiritual lesson in that? We can choose to release these grievances and choose to create a miracle. Forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves.
