Millions of monarch butterflies fly to Mexico for the winter. They are the only insect that migrates to a warmer climate that is 2,500 miles away each year. Additionally, they like to hibernate in the same trees every year.

Daily Good: An Unlikely Friendship Reignites Two Artists

Brian Peterson didn’t know what he had in common with Matt Faris when he went out of his way to meet his Santa Ana, Calif., neighbor. Every day, Peterson would pass by Faris, who has been homeless for more than a decade. But it took some guts, Peterson admits, to finally walk up to him. It was during that first conversation that they discovered they shared the pursuit of art. And Peterson, a car designer who hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in eight years, found inspiration in Faris. Read on to see how these two former strangers ignited the inner artist in each other.

These thoughts are not new; what’s new is my aspiration to address them—authentically and publicly.

Patheos-Pagan: Winter Trepidation

I used to tolerate winter. I grew up with huge snowstorms in New York City (we walked for MILES in the snow to the subway station), and most of my family lived like polar bears in upstate New York, where it seemed to snow about seven months out of twelve. Enjoying the snow, skiing, traveling to wintry places on purpose (just WHY?), people rhapsodizing poetically about snow and snow activities.

Today’s Recipe: Lemon Everything Cake

I call this the Lemon Everything cake because it encompasses all types of lemon desserts all in one dish. The bottom is like the center of a lemon meringue; custardy and dense. The middle is lighter but still dense, like a standard lemon cake. The top is airy and super light, like lemon angel food cake. The icing on top is thin and crisp. This is a lemon lover’s dream dessert!

MBG: How To Give Your Home An Energetic Makeover This Fall, According To Feng Shui

In feng shui philosophy, the season of autumn is related to the metal element. Metal, water, wood, fire, and earth make up the five “phases,” or elements, that Taoists and Buddhists observe to relate the cycles of nature with the patterns in our homes, bodies, and lives. Many different ancient cultures have their own five-element system, such as the Native Americans, Tibetans, and Hindus.

Daily Good: In the Footsteps of Kabir

Possibly the most-quoted poet-saint of north India is Kabir, the illiterate, 15th century mystic who belonged to a class of weavers in the ancient city of Varanasi. Kabir was a ‘nirguni’, one who believes in a formless divinity that can be discovered both within and without. With whip-like wit, his poetry scorns outward rituals and displays of piety exhorting his listeners to seek the divine through self-interrogation, and to recognise the impermanence of manifest reality. Read on for an extract from ‘The Bijak of Kabir’, one of the most important anthologies of the Eastern tradition of Kabir’s verses.

Often, when we think of “core strength,” we think exclusively of the abs. But core strengthening is about much more than attaining a toned six-pack. We must also pay attention to the back of the core, as well as the oblique abdominals—the muscles on the sides of the lower torso.

MNN: ‘Alice’s Restaurant’: It’s a Thanksgiving music tradition

Thanksgiving is full of traditions. With a few exceptions, the food on my Thanksgiving table looks almost exactly like the food that was on my parent’s Thanksgiving table year after year. It’s tradition. When my son was 3 years old, he made paper pilgrims and Native Americans in the shape of paper drumsticks at school. I proudly taped them onto the china cabinet. Patheos-Pagan: Irish-American Witchcraft: Be Your Own Spiritual Leader

There’s an aspect of modern paganism that has always puzzled me and recently I think I’ve started to understand a bit about why. It’s not a judgement, just an observation about how different formative experiences create different approaches to things. I often see the wider pagan community looking for and to spiritual leaders and texts as if they are ultimate authorities. And that has always puzzled me somewhat

FOLLOW THROUGH AND COMPLETE

“Activity is not achievement. It is not enough to rush about beginning a lot of things and keeping busy. A well-spent life is one that rounds out what it has begun.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Intention and the words we speak are powerful. When we say we are going to do something, we set energy in motion. When we fail to act or complete our intention, we drain our energy. We lose our power.

We would be wise to choose our words carefully — to really mean what we say and to honour the commitments we have made.

Passion

“The fiery moments of passionate experience are the moments of wholeness and totality of the personality.”

-Anais Nin (1968)

Passion is often associated with fire. It feels “hot.” It feels like it could consume us. We need to pay attention to the things that we feel passionate about. Our passions are tools which help us to learn and grow. When we are pursuing our passions we feel alive, we are living in the moment, taking it all in and savoring each experience. They are the times when we are more of who we really are, and we know it.

Daily Good: To Keep Company With Oneself

Philosophy student Jennifer Stitt writes a thoughtful essay asking whether we would become lonely in solitude or find new depths? Philosophers have long distinguished between solitude and loneliness. Emerson celebrated the former, in which “nature may speak to the imagination, as she never does in company.” Socrates celebrated the soundless dialogue “which the soul holds with herself.” And in the 20th century, Hannah Arendt muses, “Thinking, existentially speaking, is a solitary but not a lonely business,” reminding us that the self “is the only one from whom you can never get away – except by ceasing to think.” { read more }

FEARS OF MONEY

“We are all powerless as children, and money looms so powerfully … we don’t grow up to claim our financial power until we look money directly in the eye, face our fears, and claim that power back.”
— Suze Orman

How does money scare you?

In your journal, write down your greatest fears around money, and see what comes up. If emotions surface, as they undoubtedly will, let them come. Really feel your feelings, without judgment. They’ll give you valuable information.

“In all realms of life it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power, and fulfill your potential; it’s no different in the financial realm. In a buy-now, consume-now culture like ours, it takes courage to make the decisions today that may make us rich tomorrow. It takes courage to face up to the facts of old age and mortality and to prepare for them. It also takes courage to live generously, regardless of your financial state of affairs. …It takes courage to ask for what you want. And it takes courage to live honestly, wisely, true to yourself …and true to your desire for more.”

Awareness

“I break up through the skin of awareness a thousand times a day, as dolphins burst through seas, and dive again, and rise, and dive.”

-Annie Dillard, An American Childhood (1987)

How many of our waking hours do we spend actually “aware?” This is a beautiful analogy, I can just picture the dolphins playing, experiencing the freedom and joy that is theirs with every magnificent dive into the beautiful ocean. PERFECTIONISM

“We have the need to be accepted and to be loved by others, but we cannot accept and love ourselves. The more self-love we have, the less we will experience self-abuse. Self-abuse comes from self-rejection, and self-rejection comes from having an image of what it means to be perfect and never measuring up to that ideal. Our image of perfection is the reason we reject ourselves the way we are, and why we don’t accept others the way they are.”
— Don Miguel Ruiz

“The maxim ‘Nothing but perfection’ may be spelled ‘Paralysis.'”

We’ve been indoors and dragging all winter, and, if you’re like me, you’re looking for some serious inspiration for these spring and summer months. Elephant Journal: May 15th: Intense Make or Break Time with the Taurus New Moon

The moon is exalted when in Taurus, meaning the moon and Taurus adore one another, and the sensual affinity they share means they resonate with each other deeply and harmoniously. This causes lunar energy to feel intense during this period, making us feel highly intuitive and ultra sensitive.

MNN: 12 out-of-this-world observatories

There’s nothing like sprawling out on a blanket on a darkened field, somewhere far from the city, to view a celestial light show. Staring off into a star-filled sky is one of life’s simplest yet most profound pleasures, a humbling experience that reminds us of the staggering immensity of the universe we call home.

Sometimes, however, serious stargazers need to seek out the big guns. And for that, there are observatories, telescope-housing institutions dedicated to the exploration of celestial objects: the moon, the sun, the stars and planets far away

Patheos-Pagan: Review: Italian Folk Magic

Italian Folk Magic: Rue’s Kitchen Witchery is a fantastic book and one I’ve really been wanting someone to write. Mary-Grace Fahrun provides a fantastic look into one of the most practical folk magic traditions I have ever seen. All the practices provided are so simple and just seem like mindful practices and prayers incorporated into everyday life to enchant it.

Inner Journey:

PERSONAL POWER

“The deep root of failure in our lives is to think, ‘Oh how useless and powerless I am.’ It is essential to think strongly and forcefully, ‘I can do it,’ without boasting or fretting.”
— Dalai Lama

Angeles Arrien says that whether we are male or female, we need to develop three kinds of power. People who hold these three powers cannot be ignored.
1.Power of presence – Being really present in each moment
2.Power of communication – Speaking my truth
3.Power of position – Being willing to take a stand

“A man’s true state of power and riches is to be in himself.”
— Henry Ward Beecher

“We are no longer puppets being manipulated by outside powerful forces; we become the powerful force ourselves.”
— Leo Buscaglia

A Note from the Universe

Those who achieve great things, defeat long odds, and become legends,  didn’t have anything you don’t have.

They just kept showing up, expecting a miracle, long after everyone else got practical.

Here comes one now…!

Today’s Recipe: Vegan Almond Spread

This is a creamy and delicious substitute for cheese spread, made of almonds that have been soaked for 24 hours. This spread really boosts flavours in sandwiches where mayonnaise and cheese would typically be used, and is also a great topping for crackers, and a dip for veggies. Add any type of chopped herbs, if you desire.

Dreams

“Within each one of us there is another whom we do not know. He speaks to us in dreams and tells us how differently he sees us from how we see ourselves. When, therefore, we find ourselves in a difficult situation, to which there is no solution, he can sometimes kindle a light that radically alters our attitude, the very attitude that led us into the difficult situation.” -Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)

This “another whom we do not know” is indeed our Higher Self, or God, or Spirit, or whatever we each may want to call that Divine energy within. Yet as we work on our spiritual growth, the point is to get to know this “another” and by doing so to understand that there really is no separation between us! We come to realize who we really are.

Beliefnet: 7 Things That Happen When You Take Responsibility For Your Life

Too many of us simply drift through our lives, allowing fate to take us where it may. But a life without commitment is a life wasted, and so it’s important to live on purpose, and to make intentional choices every single day.

This is how you build a life that is truly yours—you put it together, choice by choice.

Thought For The Day: Jan 26, 2018 ” We All Have Choices”

Happy Friday,

This is an interesting quote and it has nothing to do with actual “religion”.  This is about compassion and empathy as opposed to hate and discontent. In any given situation we have a choice to either do something that we can proud of or something that we will regret later. We are personally responsible for our actions and reactions. if you pay attention to what goes on in the world you see a lot of people refusing to take responsibility for things they do or say. The other day I had someone say to me ” Well I’m just a bitch, so deal with it.”  Uh…………… no……….. this is on you, YOU deal with it. It’s out there, you can’t take it back and there is no excuse for it. I hope you think about it later and have the decency to feel bad about it. My point is  that if we all tried to do “good” in situations we would all have something to be proud of.
