Inner Journey: VALUE JUST BEING

“To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious.”
— Samuel Butler

Many of us have been taught to believe that we are valued for what we do, not just for who we are. ‘Doing’ is important, but to keep life in balance, we also need time to just ‘be.’

Henry David Thoreau expressed this so well in Walden Pond:

“There were times when I could not afford to sacrifice the bloom of the present moment to any work, whether of the head or hand.

“Sometimes, on a summer morning, I sat in my sunny doorway from sunrise till noon, rapt in a revery, amidst the pines and hickories and sumacs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness, while the birds sang around or flitted noiseless through the house, untilby the sun falling in at my west window, or the noise of some traveller’s wagon on the distant highway, I was reminded of the lapse of time.

“I grew in those seasons like corn in the night, and they were far better than any work of the hands would have been.”

“Nature never repeats herself, and the possibilities of one human soul will never be found in another.”

-Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Our individuality is our strength. We don’t need to imitate. We don’t need to be anything other than who we are. We are blessed with unique gifts that can’t be duplicated. The more we get to know ourselves, the more we become self-aware, the more that we will find opportunities to use these gifts to make the world a better place.

Daily Tarot: The Fool

You may have the best of intentions today but it won’t be easy to stick to any of them. There’s a lot of randomness in the air and you won’t have very much control over anything. Don’t let this lull you into becoming thoughtless or not caring about what you’re doing. Do what you can and save some energy for tomorrow when things might be smoother.

Always trust that you know what’s best for you. To move forward in your life, gather information from the “experts,” consider how their advice relates to your situation and then act only on what feels right for you. You are the only expert for your own life.

“I trust so much in the power of the heart and the soul; I know that the answer to what we need to do next is in our own hearts. All we have to do is listen, then take that one step further and trust what we hear. We will be taught what we need to learn.”

Where are you not being true to yourself?

When our thoughts, feelings and actions align with our essence, we express the qualities of soul. Always trust that your soul knows what’s best for you.

Believe in yourself and act on your ideas. Give yourself permission to do what you want with your life. Take the initiative to set meaningful goals for yourself and achieve them. Begin to tell yourself why you CAN have what you want!

A Note from the Universe

I want for you what you want for yourself.

What you want, therefore, is quite literally what I want.

But do you realize that you can’t get “there,” without me, just as I can’t get “there,” without you.

That the things I can do, you cannot? And that the things you can do, I cannot?

That’s big… and so is what we can do when we work together.

You’re just another part of me,

The Universe

Cause and Effect
In the spiritual life, every cause is also an effect, and every effect is at the same time a cause.”

-Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

What came first? We don’t know what came first because there is no beginning, and there is no end. What is real is eternal, and timeless. And even though there is no timeline, there is perfect order, perfect organization, definite purpose. So here we are, a part of it all, a cause and also an effect

Daily Tarot: The World

Take your place in the World and be in your element all day long. Your practical mind and easy nature let you cruise through the regular maze that is daily life. If anything out of the ordinary arises, you’ll know instinctively how to approach it and resolve things to your satisfaction. Today may not be easy or effortless but it will be rich in success and approval – from yourself and probably others as well.

Interdependence
“There’s a thread that binds all of us together, pull on one end of the thread, the strain is felt all down the line.”

-Rosamond Marshall, 1943

We have an inherent obligation to help out. When someone is in pain, that hurt affects more than just that one person. By reaching out, by showing compassion, by doing whatever we can to ease the burden, we make it better for all of us. Love lifts, love heals, love lightens. Whether it’s right here at home, or across the world, there are so many opportunities to make a difference.

The Fragrance of Prayer

“I was having some downtime in a high place. Having slowed, I could see how much a rushed life had whiplashed my body. When I’m caught in that frame of reference, everything seems whiplashed. Birds fly scattershot and even ants seem indecisive, irritable. The earth grows blurred because I grow blurred. The old rhythms, of course, persist. Things move fast, like larks or light. But none of it rushes.” So begins this beautiful meditative piece by John Landretti. { read more }

Inner Journey:

ACCEPT CHANGE

“We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning; for what in the morning was true will in evening become a lie.”
— C.G. Jung

Life continually evolves. We’re always moving into new experiences, new possibilities. This constant change unsettles the personality, which finds security in stability. But with life always in flux, that security is an illusion. We experience pain by trying to hold on to things that are not solid.

Life becomes joyful when we can open to the constant flow and ride freely with it. This requires us to let go of the need to control. We need to learn to trust.

“Can it then be that what we call the ‘self’ is fluid and elastic? It evolves, strikes a different balance with every new breath.”
— Wayne Muller

“We’re never the same; notice how you’re called to write something entirely different about a topic you responded to weeks or months ago.”
— Patrice Vecchione

Style
“Style is the garb of thought.”

-Seneca the Younger (5? B.C. – A.D. 65)

What we say, the content, is important, and the way we say it, the style, is important, too. I saw a television movie about the life of Mother Teresa and one scene really stuck with me. Of course, her whole life was beautiful, and everything about her was beautiful. But we don’t really associate Mother Teresa as someone who was concerned with style. Ah, quite the contrary! She knew that her appearance was going to make an impression on the people she served. She chose her habit very carefully. She did not want it to be too fancy, or bright, and she didn’t want it to be too plain, or drab. She went through several different designs before choosing the one that she felt was just right. And when she found that one, she stuck with it. She didn’t have to think about it anymore. This was a woman of style. She knew what was right for the occasion and she got just what she wanted.

Restlessness and boredom could slow you down and take you off on some unintended tangent. If you can’t break free of the usual routine today, do what’s necessary and perhaps schedule more delicate tasks for another time when it will be easier to be precise and attend to details. Know your own limits and if possible don’t take on something that will only frustrate you. If you must, start slow.
