“The sweet calm sunshine of October, now
Warms the low spot; upon its grassy mold
The purple oak-leaf falls; the birchen bough
drops its bright spoil like arrow-heads of gold.”

October Birthstone : Opal
Birthstone Color: Multi-colored
October’s birthstone treats the eye to an explosion of shimmering colors, not unlike those of a magnificent rainbow following a summer rain. The Opal derives its name from the Latin word “opalus,” meaning precious jewel. Prized for its unique ability to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light, the Opal was called “Cupid Paederos” by the Romans, meaning a child beautiful as love. One legendary explanation for this gemstone’s origin is that it fell from heaven in a flash of fiery lightning.

ThoughtCo: The History of the Pagan Samhain Sabbat
Most folks know Samhain as Halloween, but for many modern Pagans, Samhain is considered a Sabbat to honor the ancestors who came before us, marking the dark time of the year. It’s an excellent time to contact the spirit world with a seance because it’s the time when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest.

Flowers For October
Marigold / Calendula
Sacred affection is shown with the marigold.
A myth describing which seems to be creation of the marigold is mentioned in the story of Clytie and Apollo.
The marigolds, genus Calendula L., are a genus of about 20 species of annual or perennial herbaceous plants in the daisy family Asteraceae, native to Mexico and Central America, the Mediterranean region and Macaronesia.
The leaves of this plant are 5-18 cm long, simple, and usually roughly hairy. The flower heads range from pale yellow to deep orange, and are 3-7 cm across, with both ray florets and disc florets. The petals of the Pot Marigold are spicy and are edible, added to dishes as a garnish.
Cosmos
Cosmos flowers symbolize peace, modesty, creation, and wholeness.
Cosmos is a genus of about twenty species of annual and perennial plants of the Asteraceae family, including the garden flowers Cosmos bipinnatus (also known as “Mexican Aster”),Cosmos atrosanguineus (“Chocolate Cosmos”) and Cosmos sulphureus (“Yellow Cosmos”).
They are native to scrub and meadow areas of the southern United States and Central America. Cosmos flowers have radiate flower heads of variously colored flowers and opposite pinnate leaves widely cultivated as garden annuals. These flowers are very fragrant, chocolate cosmos even smell like chocolate.

“To all the ancient ones from their houses, the Old Ones from above and below. In this time the Gods of the Earth touch our feet, bare upon the ground. Spirits of the Air whisper in our hair and chill our bodies, and from the dark portions watch and wait the Faery Folk that they may join the circle and leave their track upon the ground. It is the time of the waning year. Winter is upon us. The corn is golden in the winnow heaps. Rains will soon wash sleep into the life-bringing Earth. We are not without fear, we are not without sorrow…Before us are all the signs of Death: the ear of corn is no more green and life is not in it. The Earth is cold and no more will grasses spring jubilant. The Sun but glances upon his sister, the earth….. It is so….Even now….But here also are the signs of life, the eternal promise given to our people. In the death of the corn there is the seed–which is both food for the season of Death and the Beacon which will signal green-growing time and life returning. In the cold of the Earth there is but sleep wherein She will awaken refreshed and renewed, her journey into the Dark Lands ended. And where the Sun journeys he gains new vigor and potency; that in the spring, his blessings shall come ever young!”

Elephant Journal: 3 Questions to Ask Yourself during 2021’s Final Mercury Retrograde. {Sept 27-Oct 18}
For some reason, I do all the wrong things during Mercury Retrogrades. I sell or buy houses, launch programs, sign contracts…always with a bit of a wry grin, daring Mercury to slip me up. Perhaps you should not try this! I’ve managed to get through fairly well, but probably because I have mad organization and detail skills. However, Mercury gets me on the techy end of things…usually in the middle of a client call. It’s a game we play. We shall see how this one goes.

Inner Journey:
DAILY FORGIVENESS
“As long as you don’t forgive, who and whatever it is will occupy rent-free space in your mind.”
— Isabelle Holland
We cannot avoid daily resentment and thoughts of guilt. They are a part of human nature. What we can do is release their grip on us. We can forgive others and ourselves daily.
Forgiveness requires nothing in return. There are no conditions. It gets rid of old baggage and clears up unfinished business. It leads us to a life of authenticity, lightness and directness. Forgiveness is the highest form of letting go of resentment and ego.
True forgiveness is more than an apology, understanding and acceptance. There is an element of recreating and re-imagining. There is a need to envision ourselves as more loving, interdependent, courageous and compassionate. Forgiveness requires honouring the sacred journey of learning about life – our life and others’.
“Whatever we have done, we can always make amends for it without ever looking back in guilt or sorrow.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Perseverance
“Learn to self-conquest, persevere thus for a time, and you will perceive very clearly the advantage which you gain from it.”
-Teresa of Avila
Self-control, self-determination, self-esteem. When it all boils down to it, our motivation to persevere must be intrinsic. It can’t come from anything outside of us, it must come from within. When this happens we recognize our strengths, we recognize our potential
