Daily Good: The Gift of Threshold Moments

Like moments of joy, awe, or bliss, threshold moments are experiences to notice, appreciate, and treasure “. . . where sound trails off into silence, time disappears into timelessness, and the known world is engulfed by the great mystery.” It is not the full moments sometimes but the empty ones that can touch us deeply and profoundly. The gaps rather than the events that give us a glimpse of great mystery. The transitions, shifts, or pauses rather than the activities themselves that make us realize how much we don’t know and cannot comprehend. In this beautiful and profound essay, Sam Keen shines a spotlight on threshold moments, celebrating and elevating them, like jewels of wisdom.

Elephant Journal: We Can’t Truly Love Ourselves until we Stop Saying these 2 Words.

Two words.
They flash in my head like dayglow in the dark and roll off my tongue at rapid speed, like a wakeful child barreling out of bed to the tree on Christmas morning.
Of the thousands of words that I could pull together to respond to benign actions, such as walking in when someone is walking out, unintentionally making someone wait, interrupting someone, walking in front of someone, taking “too long” to get my change out, or making a thoughtful decision at the café counter, it is these two words that spring to mind like a jackrabbit on a sunny spring day.

EarthSky News: Tips for watching North Taurid meteors

This weekend is a good time to look for North Taurid meteors. This long-lasting shower – which, with its sister shower, the South Taurids – runs throughout late October and November. The nominal peak of the North Taurids is on the night of November 11-12, 2018. Generally, this shower is at its strongest for several hours, centered around midnight local time. This weekend, a waxing crescent moon sets at relatively early evening, providing moon-free skies for the expected peak date of the North Taurid meteor shower.

Inner Journey:

REALLY BE THERE FOR ANOTHER

“Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. You can see that when you think how the friends that really listen to us are the ones we move toward, and we want to sit in their radius as though it did us good, like ultraviolet rays.”
— Brenda Ueland

How well do we communicate with others? Often, when we are interacting with others, our attention in both speaking and listening is focused on meeting our own needs.

Our communication skills improve when we can open to be aware of the needs of the other person. When we listen, we can release the filters that serve our own needs for security and receive the message with our compassionate heart. And when we speak, we can choose words that the listener is able to receive. True communication happens when we harmonize with the other individual.

“So when you are listening to somebody, completely, attentively, then you are listening not only to the words, but also to the feeling of what is being conveyed, to the whole of it, not part of it.”
— Jiddu Krishnamurti

“The first duty of love is to listen.”

Beauty

“At some point in life the world’s beauty becomes enough. You don’t need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough.”

-Toni Morrison

We always seem to be striving for MORE. More money, more time, more patience, more love… when we have so much and don’t even know it. Or if we know it in the intellectual sense, we don’t really believe it enough to live it. We have all of this abundance and more available to us – it is ours to claim and enjoy and celebrate! The beauty of our world, God’s world, is in us and all around us at all times. At some point, we come to respect that, and appreciate it, and know that it is plenty enough.

Generally, it’s difficult to catch a pale, whisker-thin waxing crescent moon that’s less than 24 hours old (24 hours past new moon). Inner Journey:

EGO’S TRICKS

“One of the great dangers of transformational work is that the ego attempts to sidestep deep psychological work by leaping into the transcendent too soon. This is because the ego always fancies itself much more ‘advanced’ than it actually is.”
— Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson

The Tibetan teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, warned of the trap of spiritual materialism. He says we must be ever diligent to spot the ego’s use of the spiritual journey to further its own ends.

We may think it’s spiritual to yearn for divine connection. And yet, if the longing is to fill an emptiness inside, just how does this differ from the one who yearns for money or possessions to fill the inner void? Do we look to our spiritual practices asproof of our evolved consciousness or as protection against fears?

Any time we use spiritual disciplines to maintain our identity and security, we are not yet on the path of genuine spiritual development.

“Enlightenment is ego’s ultimate disappointment.”
— Chögyam Trungpa

Beauty

“Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful; for beauty is God’s handwriting – a wayside sacrament. Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Beauty is everywhere, all around an in each one of us. Yet where do we put our attention? On what we have decided is “wrong?” On what we think needs to be “fixed?” There is beauty in these things, too – if we would only look for it. There is a lesson, a gift, a treasure to be found in every situation and circumstance. We can acknowledge it or turn away from it – but it is there nonetheless.

Inner Journey:

WHAT IS LOVE?

“When mystics use the word love, they use it very carefully — in the deeply spiritual sense, where to love is to know; to love is to act. If you really love, from the depths of your Consciousness, that love gives you a native wisdom. You perceive the needs of others intuitively and clearly, with detachment from any personal desires; and you know how to act creatively to meet those needs, dexterously surmounting any obstacle that comes in the way. Such is the immense, driving power of love.”
— Eknath Easwaran

“Therefore, when I say that ‘I love,’ it is not I who love, but in reality Love who acts through me. Love is not so much something I do as something that I am. Love is not a doing but a state of being – a relatedness, a connectedness to another mortal, an identification with her or him that simply flows within me and through me, independent of my intentions or my efforts.”
— Robert A. Johnson

“When you are aware that you are the force that is Life, anything is possible. Miracles happen all the time, because those miracles are performed by the heart. The heart is in direct communion with the human soul, and when the heart speaks, even with the resistance of the head, something inside you changes; your heart opens another heart, and true love is possible.”
— Don Miguel Ruiz

“I pray thee, O God, that I may be beautiful within.” -Socrates

Ah, Socrates! Wisdom is beautiful! You are beautiful! Who would argues that this great philosopher wasn’t beautiful? It’s like a supermodel wishing to be more photogenic. We are all beautiful simply because we ARE. We are here, on this beautiful planet. We cannot be MORE beautiful, because we are already all that. Spirituality & Health:  3 Meditations for Group Healing
BY KATHRYN DRURY WAGNER
“We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness,” said spiritual teacher and activist Thich Nhat Hanh. There is no us, no them, no me, no we. Our powerful energy is flowing, all together. Yet the illusion of separateness is so strong among humans; we can’t even recognize how interconnected our needs are, both physical and emotional. This separateness is especially acute in America today, and the recent hate-fueled acts of mail bombings and the synagogue shooting, plus a contentious election, haven’t exactly smoothed things over. Today, we use the power of mantra for group transformation.

Daily Good: Pablo Neruda Against the Illusion of Separateness

“There is no insurmountable solitude. All paths lead to the same goal: to convey to others what we are. And we must pass through solitude and difficulty, isolation and silence in order to reach forth to the enchanted place where we can dance our clumsy dance and sing our sorrowful song — but in this dance or in this song there are fulfilled the most ancient rites of our conscience in the awareness of being human and of believing in a common destiny.” The great Chilean poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda was only a small boy, just over the cusp of preconscious memory, when he had a revelation about why we make art. It seeded in him a lifelong devotion to literature as a supreme tool that widens out the boundaries of our being, and unites all living things.” Read more of the creative thoughts and feelings of this extraordinary man

IMAGINE YOUR IDEAL FUTURE

“Your imagination is your preview to life’s coming attractions.”
— Albert Einstein

If you were to create an ideal future for yourself, what would it be like?

All things that now exist in form were once simply ideas in consciousness. We each hold the power to manifest different circumstances for our lives. If we wish to manifest a new reality for ourselves, we need to consistently focus our imagination on the ideals we seek to realize.

Remember to explore your ideal in terms of qualities, not people or things. What qualities do you most want in life? Freedom? Respect? Playfulness? Abundance? Whatever qualities you seek, imagine experiencing them now and be open to new ways to discover those qualities appearing in your life.

“Change is created by those whose imaginations are bigger than their circumstances”

A Note from the Universe

If speaking to a spiritual novice during the darker days of human evolution,  one might explain God, metaphorically, as if “He” were angry, testing, and judgmental.

To someone a bit more savvy, during easier times, one might explain God, metaphorically, as if “She” were always loving, nurturing, and forever conspiring on your behalf.

And to someone on the verge of a total breakthrough, during the latter days of human evolution, one might explain God by asking them to turn up the music, take off their shoes, walk in the grass, unleash the dogs, free the canary, catch a breeze, ride a wave, dance every day, get up early, take a nap, stay out late, eat chocolate, feel the love, give stuff away, earn it back, give some more, and laugh…. Really.

Really, really.

Catch a breeze –

The Universe

Beauty

“Beauty is truth, truth beauty – that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”

-John Keats

We’re always hearing new “definitions” of beauty – whether they are cultural or based on our own generation. But this simple statement explains it all so clearly. It’s like the two words are interchangeable. The truth is what is, not what is not. Beauty is. God is.

Thought For The Day: Nov.6, 2018 “Just Listen”

Happy Tuesday!

People who really listen are rare, and the truth is that listening to understand is an art form. Our challenge for today is to really listen to others. Hear and understand them and don’t just give them an automatic reply, give the one that matters.

Daily Good: A Call to Caring

“At the heart of caring is an ‘and’ not an ‘or’. Deep within us lies a potential that transcends our artificial limitations. Can we embrace the possibility that we are fully capable of caring globally, in every direction — that the compass of our caring could open 360 degrees?” In his new book ‘Caring’ Tibetan lama Tarthang Thulku dives deep into an exploration of caring the potent antidote it offers to the ills of our time. The following excerpt, authored by his daughter shares thoughts on how to create a more caring world

Elephant Journal: How to Stop Spewing your Past all Over your Present.

An old lover of mine recently posted on social media:
“You’re going to date a few cowards before you meet someone brave enough to love you.”
My initial response: What a fucker.
My sarcastic response: Jeez, thanks.
My annoyed response: But wait…I thought you didn’t believe in love?
My snarky response: Shit…she must be brave to love you.
My snarkier response: Mirror mirror.

EarthSky News: Watch for Taurid fireballs!

Various sources give wildly different dates for the peak date of the long-lasting South Taurid meteor shower (active from late September to late November). November 4, 2018 is one of those predicted dates. Thus both November 4 and November 5, 2018 are good nights to watch for meteors, possibly featuring a higher-than-average rate of South Taurid meteors.

Patheos-Pagan: Pan-Celtic Hoofbeats: Finding Your Patron Deity

I notice a lot of new Pagans asking how to find a patron deity. They often sound worried about not having one yet, or not sure how this miracle is supposed to take place.
Newbies, this is a crone speaking. You are fine as you are. Take your time. You will never have it all figured out, anyway! Run like hell from anybody who says they have!

Inner Journey:

INSPIRED TO CHANGE?

Are you getting the most benefit from these short Inner Journeys? Here are some ways to progressively stimulate more and more growth and change from these messages:
•Read them quickly for momentary inspiration and move on to the next email.
•Print them and keep them visible so you are conscious of the message during the day.
•Take just 30 seconds and write in your journal as little as one word or a few sentences about how you connect with each message.
•Take just 3 to 5 minutes to relax, reflect and contemplate on the messages that touch you. And then write a short note in your journal.
•When a message really hits home, make the effort to explore the program that delves into that topic more deeply.

At a minimum, if a message strikes any nerve at all, take a few seconds to become aware of what nerve was struck and what it means to you.

This process builds awareness, and awareness brings change and growth – automatically!

“Everyone stumbles over the truth from time to time, but most people pick themselves up and hurry off as though nothing ever happened.”
— Sir Winston Churchill

Beauty

“Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.” -Kahlil Gibran

When does life unveil her holy face? When we remove the veil of illusion before our eyes. We see things so obscured by the pressures and demands of our lives. Never mind the forest for the trees – we don’t see the blessings for the bills! But every once in awhile, it catches us by surprise. We are moved by beauty. It is a gentle reminder of God’s presence. Maybe it’s a dandelion growing through a crack in the sidewalk – a sign that life is meant to be lived despite any obstacles. Maybe it is a neighbor’s smile, or a beneficial “coincidence.” In any case, our lives are beautiful, we are beautiful, even if we need to be reminded of it every once in awhile.
