MBG: Mushroom extract may help save bees

Over the past decade, beekeepers have experienced dramatic colony losses, with average bee losses of more than 30 percent. Causes range from pollution to habitat loss to viruses transmitted by parasites.

It’s on the last of those causes that research may have found a sliver of hope. Scientists may have discovered a way to combat the viruses, and all it took was some mushrooms and the dreams of a one-time long-haired hippie.

Daily Good: The Dinner Party

Loss is part of life for all of us, but the tendency in our time is to carry that burden alone. Lennon Flowers had lost her own mother to cancer and was carrying that burden alone when her friend and colleague Carla Hernandez reached out to her. Carla invited Lennon over to share dinner with other friends who’d lost a loved one, and the Dinner Party was born. Today, there are thousands of Dinner Partiers active at over 200 tables in over 90 cities and towns worldwide.

Such a scary word.
It’s defined as the state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.

EarthSky News: Watch for false dawn or dusk

That combination makes these next few weeks ideal for seeing the zodiacal light, also known as the false dawn. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, look east, about an hour before the light of true dawn.

Patheos-Pagan: Magical herbs, plants and foods for protection

I was recently asked about the best herbs to use for protection. My answer to any question along the lines of ‘what herbs are best to use’ is to go with your intuition. Trust it. What works for some might not work so well for others. There are of course some ‘standard’ (for want of a better word) herbs that can be used for the magical purpose of protection but I wholeheartedly believe that it will work better if you choose it based on your own gut instinct.

Inner Journey:

DAILY FORGIVENESS

“As long as you don’t forgive, who and whatever it is will occupy rent-free space in your mind.”
— Isabelle Holland

We cannot avoid daily resentment and thoughts of guilt. They are a part of human nature. What we can do is release their grip on us. We can forgive others and ourselves daily.

Forgiveness requires nothing in return. There are no conditions. It gets rid of old baggage and clears up unfinished business. It leads us to a life of authenticity, lightness and directness. Forgiveness is the highest form of letting go of resentment and ego.

True forgiveness is more than an apology, understanding and acceptance. There is an element of recreating and re-imagining. There is a need to envision ourselves as more loving, interdependent, courageous and compassionate. Forgiveness requires honouring the sacred journey of learning about life – our life and others’.

“Whatever we have done, we can always make amends for it without ever looking back in guilt or sorrow.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Prayer

“Time spent on the knees in prayer will do more to remedy heart strain and nerve worry than anything else.”

-George David Stewart

Long before Prozac, there was prayer. Can you see the prescription now? “Pray two prayers, twice a day until symptoms subside. Then continue the treatment over the course of a lifetime to prevent symptoms from recurring.” Prayer is a remedy. We can turn our burdens over to God and feel the weight drop from our shoulders. Why do we feel the need to carry around all that heaviness? Pray. And then pray some more. And then keep praying. And feel the lightness return.

Thought For The Day: Oct.11, 2018 “Don’t Change”

Happy Thursday,

We have all at one time or another changed ourselves to be accepted. Sometimes it’s a small change but quite often the changes are big ones. While we all want to be liked by others the truth is that people will like us more if we simply be ourselves. By being ourselves we attract the right tribe. So which is more important…… changing to meet the expectations of others or being YOU and having people love you for who you are, flaws and all?

Spirituality & Health: Yes, Grownups Need a Bedtime

Getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night can be challenging enough. Kids come pussyfooting in and wake us up at 2 a.m. Or we stay up too late binge-watching TV, or we burn the midnight oil on a work project. As if getting enough sleep isn’t already a high bar to reach, researchers tell us to also keep an eye on irregular sleep patterns. For this week’s Healthy Habit, let’s look at three reasons adults need regular bedtimes

DEFINE ‘RICH’

“It ain’t so much trouble to get rich as it is to tell when we have got rich.”
— Josh Billings

How do you define ‘rich’?

If you want greater wealth, what does that mean for you? A large annual income? If so, how large? A beautiful home? Health? Security? Happiness? To be in service?

Get really specific about what would bring you a rich life. There are no right and wrong answers here. Don’t judge your desires. Just dig deep to discover what it is that you really want. If you want things, explore what qualities of life those things representto you.

“No one can tell whether they are richer or poor by turning to their ledger. It is the heart that makes a person rich. One is rich according to what one is, not according to what one has.”
— Henry Ward Beecher

“If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free. If our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed.”

Happy Wednesday,

We’re not perfect. No one is. Our quote for today clearly says this. But there is no reason to let these things that happen keep us down. Patheos-Pagan: A Deep Dive into Animism

The very term animism was used by early anthropologists to conjure a more “primitive” world before the eyes of their readers. But there is another part to the conversation.

To be an animist means to understand that the worlds of both the spirit and the physical exist. The two can be experienced, side-by-side. This attitude is not a matter of religion, or belief. It becomes, in time, a matter of phenomenology, and eventually simple practicality.

Inner Journey:

HEAL DUALITIES

“Beware of the fury of the patient man.”
— John Dryden

Our minds perceive and give relative value – positive and negative – to the different sides of a duality. We usually shun the negative.

It’s important to know that you cannot eliminate the negative by focusing exclusively on the positive. Energetically, both opposites must remain in balance. Increase one and its opposite will also increase. Try to be only positive and the negative within you will raise its ugly head.

We work with dualities by remembering that each is part of the whole. We must acknowledge and accept all aspects of life, because they all exist within us. And so, if we seek to be honest, we do so by acknowledging our potential to be dishonest. We can also bring in love and compassion when we catch ourselves acting out the negative.

Power arises out of integrating the positive and negatives within us. From the tension that exists between the two, we develop awareness and become more conscious and compassionate.

“Any fool can run towards the light. It takes a master with courage to turn and face the darkness and shine his own light there.”
— Leslie Fieger – author of the Delfin Knowledge System

Prayer

“You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might also pray in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.”

-Kahlil Gibran

There is no “right way” to pray. There is no “right time” to pray. Prayer is an ongoing dialogue, a soul connection with spirit, a fusion of physics and metaphysics. Prayer is our expression of gratitude, despair, longing, appreciation. It is one means of communication and communion with All That Is. Sometimes we’re praying and we don’t even realize it. Our actions reflect our thoughts; our thoughts are prayers. What are we thinking? What are we doing about it?

DEEPER COMMUNICATION

“Once a human being has arrived on this earth, communication is the largest single factor determining what kinds of relationships he makes with others and what happens to him in the world about him.”
— Virginia Satir

How do you typically communicate? Is it through words, gestures, emotions, thoughts, desires, needs, truths, direct perception or intuition? Do you focus more on the other person or on yourself? Do you typically tell, ask or listen?

For a few days, set an intention to be aware of your communication styles and skills. After you’ve spent some time talking with someone, reflect on what your underlying motives were and what level of depth you reached. Write your insights in your journal. This exercise will help you become more aware and conscious of who you are and why you do what you do.

Prayer

“Prayer is something deeper than words. It is present in the soul before it has been formulated in words. And it abides in the soul after the last words of prayer have passed over our lips.”

-O. Hallesby

We feel our prayers more than we really say our prayers. Prayers become real to us when the emotion behind them, within them, is so strong that the prayer becomes animated – it has life. Our soul houses these prayers before our minds even figure out how to articulate them. Prayers can be silent, yet heart-felt.

Beliefnet: 6 Things to Stop Feeling Guilty About Immediately
“Guilt is to the spirit as pain is to the body” -Elder David A. Bedna

Guilt is such a strong word but many people, especially women, feel guilt more often than not. Guilt can be defined as “feelings of deserving blame especially for imagined offenses or from a sense of inadequacy”. It makes us feel inadequate or that we aren’t doing enough for something, someone, or ourselves.

Thought For The Day: Oct. 8, 2018 “One Good Thing”

Happy Monday,

Our attitude towards the things that happen in our lives can enhance or distort our perspective. If we are continually viewing things through a negative lens then we will only see the bad. However, if we look for that “One Good Thing” we can always find something positive to raise our spirits.

Spiritual Unite: When You Are Feeling Your Soulmates Emotions

Soulmates are people whose souls belong to the same soul group. This means, in essence, that the souls of two soulmates are more innately connected and attuned with each other due to their close relationship in what is often described as the tree of consciousness. We can think of soulmates as belonging to the same soul family or soul tribe.

MBG: There Are Two Kinds Of Kindness, And They Affect Your Brain Differently

You know that warm, expansive feeling that rolls over you when you pay for a stranger’s soy latte, let a few cars merge in front of you during rush hour, or toss a five spot into a street musician’s guitar case? Turns out, the buzz we get from giving without expecting anything in return is quite unique.

Elephant Journal: What a False Prophet, Nasty Guru & a Bliss Babe taught me about Self-Love.

Nothing is static, especially enlightenment.
Awakening to our true nature does not mean liberation from one’s personality (and its shadow), but rather, a new relationship to it.
I learned both of these in the seven years since an overnight spiritual awakening, which catapulted me into a surreal peace, followed by years of hyper-synchronicity, and rare, but intense, episodes of suffering.

MNN: Maybe those dreams you’ve been having aren’t so far out after all

All that data we collect during the day turns into unicorns at night

A good brain never sleeps.
In fact, it stays up all night to crunch the data we collect by day. And considering all that information — the countless experiences and feelings and sensations of daily life — you might imagine things get a little wild in there.

And so too do our dreams.

Patheos-Pagan: 6 Ways to Talk to the Gods (and How to Listen for an Answer)

As anyone who’s read this blog for more than a week knows, I’m a polytheist. I do my best to form and maintain respectful, reciprocal relationships with the Gods who I honor and serve. And relationships require constant communication.

Inner Journey:

MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

“What is it that makes all of us end each day with the sense that we have not lived our time, but have been lived, used by what we do?”
— Jacob Needleman

How can you free up more time for yourself?

All of the great masters counsel that we need time daily for solitude. And if we want our journey in life to be meaningful, then surely we need some free time each day to explore our inner landscapes and uncover our passions. What activities can you cutout of your life to give you more growing room?

“Why has time disappeared in our culture? How is it that after decades of inventions and new technologies devoted to saving time and labor, the result is that there is no time left? We are a time-poor society; we aretemporally impoverished. And there is no issue, no aspect of human life, that exceeds this in importance. The destruction of time is literally the destruction of life.”

Today’s Recipe: Lebanese Roast Chicken

I tweaked an old Lebanese kabob-type recipe and used a whole chicken so I could just marinate it, throw it in the oven, and forget about it. I served it with some warm flatbread and yogurt. I love using the roasted chicken’s super flavourful bones and pieces to make a hearty chicken broth for another meal. I butterflied my chicken for more uniform cooking. You also get better results for crispy skin this way, if you’re into it.

Nature

“The natural world is dynamic. From the expanding universe to the hair on a baby’s head, nothing is the same from now to the next moment.”

-Helen Hoover, The Waiting Hills, 1963

It is true that we are constantly changing. We understand and even welcome change when it comes to nature. We look forward to the warmth of Summer after a rainy spring. We do not mourn when Autumn turns to Winter – because we realize that it is time moving forward, that it is all a part of the cycle necessary for growth and evolution. And still, as humans, we tend to resist change, to deny it, or fight it. But Nature and its laws understand that we all fit into the big picture, and so we are along for the ride, like it or not! We might as well enjoy it, appreciate it, and learn and grow from the experience.
