ThoughtCo: Setting Up Your Yule Altar

Yule is the time of year when Pagans around the world celebrate the Winter Solstice. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, this will be on or around December 21, but if you’re below the Equator, your Yule celebration will fall in June. This Sabbat is considered the longest night of the year, and following Yule, the sun begins its long journey back to earth. Try some or even all of these ideas — obviously, space may be a limiting factor for some, but use what calls to you most.

MNN: 7 of the best plants to give as gifts

Giving a gift that will stand the test of time is always a challenge, but giving plants is one way to try. Whatever type of plant you choose, it’s sure to last longer than cut flowers will, and often costs the same (or less) than a nice arrangement from the florist. In fact, many houseplants can cost in the $15-$20 range, while a large bouquet is often twice that.

Patheos-Pagan: Feeling Overwhelmed At Yule

TRANSFORMATION

“The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”
— William Faulkner

Longing for a miracle that will transform your life? Miracles happen, and if we don’t want that magic to disappear on us, we need to learn from each epiphany — to integrate it, apply it, and build on it so we can permanently shift to a new level of being.

The real key to fulfillment lies in ONGOING transformation: building our awareness of daily opportunities to change our perceptions and raise our consciousness. Life is about dissolving the old and creating anew. The more we open to accepting and learning from every life experience, the more our lives transform.

“Enlightenment must come little by little — otherwise it would overwhelm.”

Scripture

“When thy mind leaves behind its dark forest of delusion, thou shalt go beyond the scriptures of times past.”

-Bhagavad Gita, 6th cent. B.C.

A lot of times the scriptures tell us stories of things that happened long ago. We are to use these stories not merely as entertainment, but as an illustration of our own lives. When we see the relevancy, and apply the wisdom garnered from those times into our present situations, we can experience tremendous growth

Inner Journey:

DISTINGUISH PERSONALITY DESIRES FROM SOUL NEEDS

“Human history is the sad result of each one looking out for himself.”
— Julio Cortazar

We indulge ourselves when we seek to meet our longings through desires of the personality. We indulge ourselves when we buy more clothes to make us happy, when we eat another snack to ease the hunger, when we have an affair to feel powerful or loveable. Any pleasure we get, if we get any at all, is shallow and short-lived.
The only lasting satisfaction can come from meeting the deep spiritual needs of the soul. We discover what we are really after in life when we identify the spiritual qualities and needs that lie behind our desires for material pleasures.

“But life lived only for oneself does not truly satisfy men or women. There is a hunger in Americans today for larger purposes beyond the self.”

-Alice Walker, 1988

That really is the way it works, isn’t it? The Earth can’t differentiate one person from another, because we’re all one! So, what one of us does affects all of us. We’re all in this together; we can’t afford to be selfish. We have to keep the “big picture” in mind at all times.

“Smile, it’s free therapy.”
— Doug Horton

I’ve learned that if I put a smile on my face when I’m feeling down, my spirits will automatically lift. The body knows that a smile means happiness.

Knowing this doesn’t mean I’m always willing to do it. Many times, I have absolutely refused to cheer myself up. Isn’t that interesting!

It’s a clue that sometimes the ego positively enjoys being miserable. It can be enlightening to explore the pay-offs we get from our black moods.

“Depend upon it that if a man talks of his misfortunes there is something in them that is not disagreeable to him; for where there is nothing but pure misery there is never any recourse to the mention of it.”
— Samuel Johnson

“In the relations of man with the animals, with the flowers, with the objects of creation, there is a great ethic, scarcely perceived as yet, which will at length break forth into light.”

-Victor Hugo (1802-1885)

Victor Hugo said this over 100 years ago. Do you think that the ethic has broken forth into light? What will it take for the world to understand that we are intricately connected to our environment? There are people and organizations making great efforts to preserve our environment, and to stop a lot of the abuse of nature that has been going on. But it seems like these organizations have to fight to get their message across. Hopefully with the growing popularity of hybrid cars, and solar power, we’ll be able to make a difference – and show that we are evolving, technologically and spiritually.

Belief

“Some things have to be believed to be seen.”

-Ralph Hodgson (1871 – 1962)

Skeptics say: “I’ll believe it when I see it.” But belief often works the other way around – we see it when we believe it! What is the criteria for manifesting something? It starts with believing, knowing, asserting that which we want to be true. Ah, and then it happens – and we see that we were right all along! There is power in belief.

A reader writes in, “There’s been some weird stuff going on in my life, and I’m beginning to notice things happening that make me think a god or goddess is trying to contact me. How do I know that this is the case and that it’s not just my brain making things up?

MBG: How Doing Eye Yoga Can Help You Relieve Stress

The average adult spends three hours a day on their phone. That’s 45 days a year. On our phones! Let’s not even talk about what that means for a lifetime. And while cellphone companies have recently begun to release screen time reports and other mechanisms to help us track our cell usage, most of us still spend an embarrassing amount of time glued to our devices.

Daily Good: Why We Turn to Mr. Rogers

“Here’s the thing: Mister Rogers almost never taught us that we should be kind. There wasn’t much should at all in the Neighborhood. The shoulds that did subtly emerge were more like suggestions. “You might consider sharing who you are through the arts. May I suggest that you find ways to express your feelings? May I remind you, once more, that those expressions don’t have to hurt you or anyone else?” Most of all, more than kindness (which he rarely talked about), more than self-expression and feelings (which he talked about all the time), he told us one thing again and again: “You are lovable.” He didn’t usually say it quite like that. Instead, he said, “I like you just the way you are,” or “There’s only one person in the world like you,” or “You’ve made this day a special day for me by just your being you.” And he sang it, too.”{ read more }

Elephant Journal: Why we can’t Love Nature if we don’t Learn to Respect It.

A group of boys was milling about on the path by the edge of the canal.
As my wife and I walked closer, we could see their arms swinging and the arc of their fishing poles as they cast their lures into the ribbon of water in the concrete trench.

EarthSky News: Keep an eye out for Mercury and Mars

Mercury, the innermost planet, reached its greatest elongation from the sun on November 28, 2019. In other words, that date marked Mercury’s farthest point from the sunrise on the sky’s dome for this morning apparition. Mercury was 20 degrees west of the sun then, but – for the coming week at least – you can still find this planet before sunup. It’ll be in the east, more or less on line with the red planet Mars and the bright blue-white star Spica in the constellation Virgo.

Patheos-Pagan: Winter Magick

With the Solstice officially here at the end of the month, it seems that now would be a wonderful time to talk about “Winter Magick.” Not to mention that the lovely forecast this brisk, cold morning here in New England, calls for three to eighteen inches of the white fluffy stuff.

Inner Journey:

WATER WISDOM

“When flowing water … meets with obstacles on its path, a blockage in its journey, it pauses. It increases in volume and strength, filling up in front of the obstacle and eventually spilling past it….

“Do not turn and run, for there is nowhere worthwhile for you to go. Do not attempt to push ahead into the danger … emulate the example of the water: Pause and build up your strength until the obstacle no longer represents a blockage.”
— from the ‘I Ching,’ presented in ‘To Build the Life You Want, Create the Work You Love: The Spiritual Dimension of Entrepreneuring’ by Marsha Sinetar

Belief

“Believe that you may understand.”

-St. Augustine (A.D. 354 – 430)

Belief is the first step toward understanding, which then leads to knowledge, wisdom, faith, and conviction. Belief suggests that we are to trust something that we can’t necessarily see. We have to take someone’s word for it. Or we have to trust our own inner vision that something is possible which hasn’t happened yet. Belief takes strength, and it can help us to grow.

Daily Tarot: Death

You may be tempted to backtrack a few times today and fall back on some old habit or procedure that used to work better than it does now. After enough of this, you’ll get the message that it’s time for a change, or at least a different approach. You don’t need to have the same old conversation over and over.
