by Maida Silverman

BLACKBERRY SYRUP
Put ripe berries into a large pot and mash very gently with a potato masher. Add water to barely cover the berries, and cook over low heat until the steam rises and they start to give up their juice. Remove from heat and strain to remove seeds.

Measure ½ cup of white sugar or mild-flavored honey (such as clover) for each cup of Blackberry juice, mix together the sweetening and juice, and reheat slowly only until sweetening is dissolved. Try not to let the juice or syrup boil, since this tends to destroy the appealing fresh-berry flavor. Keep syrup refrigerated in jars. (It may also be frozen, and keeps very well both ways.)

EarthSky News: Moon, Mars rendezvous in early October

In early October 2020, the waning gibbous moon meets with the dazzling red planet Mars. On October 2, look for the glorious evening couple – the moon and Mars – to rise in tandem in your eastern sky around nightfall or early evening. After the brilliant twosome rises, they’ll be out for the rest of the night, traveling westward across the nighttime sky. The moon and Mars climb highest up for the night after midnight, and then sit low in the west as dawn starts to color the October 3.

As we continue our series on Vedic Numerology, today we take a look at the number 4.

Those born on day 4, 13, 22, or 31 in any month are ruled by the number 4, and by Rahu. Rahu is one of the two nodes of the moon, the other being Ketu. Witch, Pagan, Neo-Pagan, Wiccan, and so on. These are all labels, titles, words to allow us to fit ourselves into little boxes. They are also words that create an us vs. them mentality. “I am not a Wiccan.” “You shouldn’t capitalize neopagan.” And my ever favorite and constant argument, “Well, actually, that tradition you practice in is only XX years old.” We spend a lot of time telling other people what does or doesn’t make their practice legit. We waste a lot of energy ‘othering’ those whose practices aren’t in perfect alignment with our own.

Personally I’m rather tired of it.

Most of comedy is built on tragedy – the slip on the banana peel, the pie in the face, the big misunderstanding. And we laugh because we can relate – we’ve been there. In movies there can only be so much drama before we’re offered up some “comic relief.” Writers know that audiences need a break in their emotions or they just go numb. Yes, life is tragic, and life can also be hysterically funny. Have you ever had one of those things happen where you say: “We’re going to look back on this and laugh one day?” We all have. And you know what? That day does come when we laugh – and it feels good.
