Inner Journey: STAR CONNECTIONS

“The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self. The energy of the stars becomes us. We become the energy of the stars. Stardust and spirit unite and we begin: One with the universe. Whole and holy.”
— Dennis J. Kucinich

Ponder the spectre of yourself as one human being in the over six billion people on Earth. See Earth as one tiny planet in a galaxy of billions of stars, and that galaxy as just one of billions of galaxies in our expanding universe. We are so minute as to be nonexistent. And yet, we have the power to visualize, to imagine the entirety of the cosmos.

In your journal, write about the paradox of being both microscopic and immense.

“I think we would be able to live in this world more peaceably if our spirituality were to come from looking not just into infinity but very closely at the world around us — and appreciating its depth and divinity.”

Study
“The great business of study is for a mind adapted and adequate to all times and all occasions; to which all nature is then laid open, and which may be said to possess the key of her inexhaustible riches.”

-Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792)

Study is exercise for the mind. And what happens, is that just like when we exercise our body and we discover how strong we are, when we exercise our mind we discover how wise we are! The muscles were there all the time, but when we work them, and pay attention to their development, they serve us by being able to lift weights, or hike a mountain, or run a marathon. And our mind is there for us to use the same way. We can be creative, we can be problem-solvers, we can be wise. Our strength, both in body and mind, comes from within.

Pema Chodron –

Embracing Groundlessness

“It’s a fundamental fact of human life that we want our lives to be under control — we develop plans, goals, routines, systems, tools, schedules, structure to our lives. But while developing some structure is a very helpful thing for most of us … the truth is, there’s so much that we don’t control. Life is chaotic, out of control, shaky. It’s what Pema Chodron calls “groundlessness” — the feeling of no solid ground under our feet.” Leo Babauta shares more in this post. { read more }

Inner Journey: RAISING YOUR SIGHTS

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
— Albert Einstein

To grow in consciousness, we expand our perspectives on life. So how do we do that? The more we work with the universal — the concept of unity and wholeness, the more everything makes sense. Parts have meaning when they are understood to be parts of a bigger picture.

Consciousness is all about relationships — especially how the lower relates to the higher and how the darkness can exist within the light. Hold and experience contradictions like anger with love. Let opposites coexist in you without choosing one over the other.

“Higher consciousness, enLIGHTenment, comes from meaningful experiences and lessons passed with the understanding that there truly is only one law – the Law of Love. When one leads a life expressing this belief, the mind and heart begin to open to new realities, and other dimensional truths become known.”
— Dr. Norma Milanovich & Dr. Shirley McCune

Poetry
“Poetry is above all a concentration of the power of language, which is the power of our ultimate relationship to everything in the universe.”

-Adrienne Rich

Poetry is just one way to express our connection with the universe. Music does it with sound, art does it with color and texture, and poetry does it with language. While the description is elusive to us in prose, poetry allows us to go beyond mere description, to abandon the confines of “structure” and convey our feelings untethered.

The whole world is made up of opposites. Dark and light are just one pair. And we really can’t have one without the other. When light hits the earth it creates shadows. Day turns to night, and the light comes again in the morning. Even in the darkness of night the stars shine their light. We wouldn’t be able to see the stars without the darkness. Inner Journey: FEEL YOUR EMOTIONS

“The key is to not resist or rebel against emotions or to try to get around them by devising all sorts of tricks; but to accept them directly, as they are.”
— Takahisa Kora

Emotions are energy in motion. They bring us information if we are willing to experience them. Unfortunately, many of us are afraid of the energy of emotions and so we automatically resist them. And when we refuse to experience our emotions, we block themup. They become trapped and that entrapment drains our energy and brings continuing discomfort.

Don’t let emotions push you into action or reaction. Just STOP and PAY ATTENTION. Allow them to be and to speak to you. Oncem they are acknowledged, their energy is released.

“Instead of resisting any emotion, the best way to dispel it is to enter it fully, embrace it and see through your resistance.”
— Deepak Chopra

“We have to become more conscious of our feeling-world. By learning to identify the ‘emotional baggage’ and manage our feeling-world reactions, we can view life based on current information instead of being held captiveby our past.”
— Doc Childre

Light
“The eye’s light is a noble gift of heaven! All beings live from light; each fair created thing, the very plants, turn with a joyful transport to the light.”

-Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805)

Light is life, and it is life-giving. Light is eternal, and ever present. Darkness is merely the absence of light. We reach for the light. It represents goodness, and power. In cartoons when someone has an idea we see a lightbulb over their head – the light has gone on! When someone is smart we say they are “brilliant.”

Inner Journey: DID YOU FIND JOY?

“The future, higher evolution will belong to those who live in joy, who share joy, and who spread joy.”
— Torkom Saraydarian

Joy, as the energy of love, is the highest vibration on this planet. Everything in the universe is energy; it can be measured and reduced to vibrational frequencies. It’s a universal law that as we think and feel we vibrate, and as we vibrate we attract. When we are in the high joy vibration, we attract what is for our greater good.

The Ancient Egyptians saw Joy as a sacred responsibility. They believed that upon their death, the God Osiris would ask them two questions: “Did you bring Joy?” and “Did you find Joy?” Those who answered ‘yes’ could continue their journey into the afterlife.

For at least the next week or two, ask yourself these two questions each and every day:
•Did I bring joy?
•Did I find joy?

“Man loves because he is Love. He seeks Joy, for he is Joy. He thirsts for God for he is composed of God and he cannot exist without Him.”

Gentleness
“Tenderness is greater proof of love than the most passionate of vows.”

-Marlene Dietrich, 1962

What we do carries more weight than what we say. If we mean what we say, how do we show it? When we’re talking about love – it means being gentle, and tender, and loyal and available. Think of how we respond to a sleeping baby – we cuddle and whisper and walk softly. It’s in our nature to show love by being gentle.

Inner Journey: LIFE COMES WITH PROBLEMS

“For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”
— Fr. Alfred D’Souza

Life always brings problems. We really can’t live without them.

And so it helps to shift our perspective. We can stop trying to avoid the problems. We can stop feeling victimized by what’s happening. Instead, we can consciously work with the challenge of the moment to learn more about ourselves and the world. When we make this shift in attitude, we discover ourselves to be strong and powerful.

“Every lesson is a widening and deepening of consciousness. It is a stretching of the mind beyond its conceptual limits and a stretching of the heart beyond its emotional boundaries. It is a bringing of unconscious material into consciousness, a healing of past wounds, and a discovery of new faith and trust.”

Illusion
“And so we plow along, as the fly said to the ox.”

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

This quote makes me smile. It’s a funny illustration of illusion. It’s good to keep a sense of humor about ourselves. Life can be hard, but we can still laugh. Sometimes we think we’re going through something really painful, awkward, or difficult – and we look at each other and say “some day we’ll look back on this and laugh” – and that immediately lightens the situation because we know it’s true! Life is full of experiences. Sometimes we’re the ox and sometimes we’re the fly.

Inner Journey: WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?

“I never know what I think about something until I read what I’ve written on it.”

What have you been thinking lately?

Do you know? We get so accustomed to our thoughts that we lose awareness of them. We don’t see how they are stuck in old habitual patterns, most of which don’t serve us.

Take time to journal so you can capture your thoughts on paper. By doing so, you will begin to take control of your mind and use it to best advantage.

“When you choose to understand [and] exercise control over the functions and attributes of your own mind, you will be empowered to create your own reality, to be completely self-reliant and totally prosperous.”

“When guilt rears its ugly head confront it, discuss it and let it go. The past is over. It is time to ask what can we do right, not what did we do wrong. Forgive yourself and move on.”

“I have made it a rule of my life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is an appalling waste of energy . . . you can’t build on it; it’s only good for wallowing in.”

“If we don’t forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us, we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt, because guilt is isolating, while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves, to other people, and to a larger whole.”

A Note from the Universe

Okay, for just five minutes forget the bucks. Forget your soulmate, too. Forget the new car, the “home run,” and being on Oprah. Forget your fears, your problems, and your pain. And during those five minutes, feel the feelings you most want to feel, for the rest of your life.

It might seem awkward, that’s okay. It might seem silly, too. And I can just about guarantee, at first, it’ll feel utterly futile… until your entire life begins to change.

If I were a beggar, I’d beg you. If I prayed in question marks, this is what I’d ask for. And if I could implore you to do anything, let this be it.

Because nothing else that you might ever do will have as profound an effect on your fortunes, friendships, and happiness; in navigating the illusions, manifesting what you want, and avoiding what you dread; as this little five-minute drill performed just once a day, on as many days as you remember to do it.

And just so you know, if you do this right now or even every day for the rest of your life, I’ll add back those five minutes to each of the days you do it. I’ll just sneak ’em in there, and they’ll feel like ten.

Hosanna in the highest,

Myth
“I find nothing in fables more astonishing than my experience in every hour. One moment of a man’s life is a fact so stupendous as to take the luster out of all fiction.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

I don’t know who said “truth is stranger than fiction” but I have seen so many examples of things that have happened where I just shake my head and say: “You couldn’t make this stuff up!” I have always been attracted to biographies and true stories for that very reason. Here we are, actually living some of the great myths of our time! Our history books are filled with them. Sometimes the lines are blurred, and we can’t remember what is real and what is not. We take liberty with history to have it “make sense” to us. Can we believe what is reported to us in the news? Or is it just another story? It’s up to each one of us to be informed, and make good decisions
