Daily Good: Kahlil Gibran on Befriending Time

“There is something odd about this notion of time as property. We are asked to give things time; we speak of taking time off of something, time toward something. But how do we give or take this fine-grained sand that slips through the fingers the moment we try to cup it? Perhaps time is not so much the substance in the hand as the substance of the hand.” Maria Popova explores Kahlil Gibran’s reflections on time in this post.

MNN: Gingko biloba trees guard a secret fountain of youth

As humans age, our bodies start to slow down and get creaky. But the same doesn’t happen with the ginkgo biloba tree.
It’s hardly a fair comparison, as these living fossils with the iconic fan-shaped leaves can live more than 1,000 years. Some of the oldest fossilized ginkgo leaves date back to 200 million years ago.

Inner Journey:

TIME TO CHANGE?

“When coasting in our comfort zones, we don’t grow. We continue to do more of the same…. Maintaining a comfort zone can, paradoxically, lead to discomfort in the long run. If by being comfortable we avoid important life issues, internal tension accumulates…. Eventually, as both internal and external pressures for change persist, the ‘comfort zone’ ceases to serve us.”
— Eric Allenbaugh
It takes effort to change. What do you most want to change in your life? Make a list of what you can do to start the process. Try journaling, perhaps. Read books. Take a course. Find a mentor. Seek out support.
How will you commit time to make it happen? When are you going to start? Your life is passing quickly!
“Be not afraid of changing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.”

Flowers

“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

-Jesus (A.D. 1st cent.) Matthew 6:28

Consider the effortlessness with which flowers grow and bloom and share their glory. We are like flowers, each individual, each unique – and yet, how often do we try to change our colors to fit in with a particular landscape? We can learn from the simplicity and beauty of nature. We can choose to bloom where we are planted.

Inner Journey:

IMPRISONED BY YOUR THOUGHTS?

“Problems exist only in the human mind.”
— Anthony de Mello

For most of us, there’s always a long ‘to do’ list. That’s a fact.

And it’s easy to feel victimized. ‘Poor me!’ That’s not a fact – that’s a choice.

Experiment with your life to explore how much your mind is your jailer. Simply let go of the ‘oh woe’ kinds of thoughts. Silence your mind. Be right here, right now. Decide what you will do now and do it, without buying in to the mind’s sob story. When one task is done, you can then choose another.

Allowing the mind to agonize about the size of the ‘to do’ list just makes us tired before we even get started. It doesn’t have to be this way.

“Don’t water your weeds.”

Confidence

“All history makes clear that an indispensable quality of any man or class that wishes to lead, to hold power and privilege in society, is boundless self-confidence.”

-James Burnham (1905 – 1987)

Think of the word “confidence” and who comes to your mind? Chances are it is someone who is successful. Whether it is an athlete, a businessperson, or a rock star, confidence brings with it a kind of charisma. We can’t help but notice! It seems the one thing successful people have in common, no matter what field they are in, is confidence. It radiates from them.

WHAT MESSAGE DID YOU MOST NEED TO HEAR?

“One word frees us from the weight and pain of life; that word is love.”
— Sophocles
In exploring the enneagram, Riso and Hudson have identified ‘lost messages’ that we needed to hear as children but didn’t. The absence of these words may be at the heart of our most basic fear. And unconsciously we may still be seeking to hear these words from others.
Review the following messages and note if any one touches you more strongly than the others:
1. “You are good.”
2. “You are wanted.”
3. “You are loved for yourself.”
4. “You are seen for who you are.”
5. “Your needs are not a problem.”
6. “You are safe.”
7. “You will be taken care of.”
8. “You will not be betrayed.”
9. “Your presence matters.”

“Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are — chaff and grain together — certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.”

That you’re absolutely gorgeous, inside and out?

That your new thriving business and a steady income came so quickly?

That others who now want to have financial security for myself and family, emulate how you did it?

That peace, love, and happiness are flourishing around the world?

Angels

“I am a little world made cunningly

Of elements and an angelic sprite.”

-John Donne (1572-1631)

This “angelic sprite” is the element that animates us – it’s that certain something that gives us our personality, our quirks, our loving spirits. We are not just a bundle of cells, of hydrogen and oxygen and glucose and whatever – we have the capacity to learn and grow and help and heal and contribute. We are made this way by design, so we need to recognize these gifts and use them!

Angels

“Angels come in all sizes and shapes and colors, visible and invisible to the physical eye. But always you are changed from having seen one.”

-Sophy Burnham, 1990

I think we’ve all seen an angel at some point in time. My mailman is an angel when he gets out in the pouring rain to deliver a package rather than leaving a note in my box for me to pick it up at the post office. My son’s teacher is an angel when she stays after school to tutor her students before a big biology test. My cat is an angel when she curls up on my lap just when I need a hug. We need to recognize the angels in our lives, and appreciate how they can change us just by being who they are.

Yule is the time of year when Pagans around the world celebrate the Winter Solstice. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, this will be on or around December 21, but if you’re below the Equator, your Yule celebration will fall in June. This Sabbat is considered the longest night of the year, and following Yule, the sun begins its long journey back to earth. Try some or even all of these ideas — obviously, space may be a limiting factor for some, but use what calls to you most.

Giving a gift that will stand the test of time is always a challenge, but giving plants is one way to try. Whatever type of plant you choose, it’s sure to last longer than cut flowers will, and often costs the same (or less) than a nice arrangement from the florist. In fact, many houseplants can cost in the $15-$20 range, while a large bouquet is often twice that.

EarthSky News: Moon and Regulus on December 16

The moon is some days past full on December 16, 2019, and so it’s rising late at night. On this evening, you might catch the moon and star Regulus – brightest star in the constellation Leo the Lion – rising in the east from mid- to late evening. If not, you can always get up before daybreak on December 17 to view this waning gibbous moon and star Regulus high in the morning sky. You’ll recognize them easily. Look first for the moon. TRANSFORMATION

“The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”
— William Faulkner

Longing for a miracle that will transform your life? Miracles happen, and if we don’t want that magic to disappear on us, we need to learn from each epiphany — to integrate it, apply it, and build on it so we can permanently shift to a new level of being.

The real key to fulfillment lies in ONGOING transformation: building our awareness of daily opportunities to change our perceptions and raise our consciousness. Life is about dissolving the old and creating anew. The more we open to accepting and learning from every life experience, the more our lives transform.

“Enlightenment must come little by little — otherwise it would overwhelm.”

Scripture

“When thy mind leaves behind its dark forest of delusion, thou shalt go beyond the scriptures of times past.”

-Bhagavad Gita, 6th cent. B.C.

A lot of times the scriptures tell us stories of things that happened long ago. We are to use these stories not merely as entertainment, but as an illustration of our own lives. When we see the relevancy, and apply the wisdom garnered from those times into our present situations, we can experience tremendous growth

SMILE!

“Smile, it’s free therapy.”
— Doug Horton

I’ve learned that if I put a smile on my face when I’m feeling down, my spirits will automatically lift. The body knows that a smile means happiness.

Knowing this doesn’t mean I’m always willing to do it. Many times, I have absolutely refused to cheer myself up. Isn’t that interesting!

It’s a clue that sometimes the ego positively enjoys being miserable. It can be enlightening to explore the pay-offs we get from our black moods.

“Depend upon it that if a man talks of his misfortunes there is something in them that is not disagreeable to him; for where there is nothing but pure misery there is never any recourse to the mention of it.”

Environment

“In the relations of man with the animals, with the flowers, with the objects of creation, there is a great ethic, scarcely perceived as yet, which will at length break forth into light.”

-Victor Hugo (1802-1885)

Victor Hugo said this over 100 years ago. Do you think that the ethic has broken forth into light? What will it take for the world to understand that we are intricately connected to our environment? There are people and organizations making great efforts to preserve our environment, and to stop a lot of the abuse of nature that has been going on. But it seems like these organizations have to fight to get their message across. Hopefully with the growing popularity of hybrid cars, and solar power, we’ll be able to make a difference – and show that we are evolving, technologically and spiritually.

NO NEED FOR COMPARISON

“Nothing is good or bad but by comparison.”
— Thomas Fuller

We are each unique, so comparing ourselves to others serves no purpose. Even comparing myself to how I was a while back is not usually helpful. Typically, comparison just brings the ego a false sense of either superiority or inferiority.

If we let go of comparison and choose instead to completely accept where we are, we can enjoy both peace and growth.

This island is home to a hundred or so people, members, mostly, of a Native American tribe called the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw–the BCC for short. For eight generations, the people of Isle de Jean Charles thrived, eating the bounty of the land and the sea: shrimp, crawfish, fish, and oysters, as well as plants they wild-harvested and grew in gardens. The tribe was so self-sufficient that when the oil and gas companies began prospecting nearby, they were surprised to discover people. But global warming is causing their land to disappear from under their feet. Inner Journey:

LOVE YOUR SHADOWS

Each of us has characteristics we define as ‘good’ and those we define as ‘bad.’ The parts of ourselves that we continually reject want to be acknowledged and loved. Until we honour these aspects, they will continue to assert themselves. They will do whatever they can to get our attention.

What aspects of yourself do you reject?

Take a few moments to open to the parts of yourself that you do not love. See each one honestly for what it is. Explore the wounds and the motives that gave rise to its condition. Love a wounded part of yourself and it will heal.

“Strangely enough we strengthen love in ourselves when we raise into consciousness the shadow side of our lives. Conversely, when we keep negative feelings out of sight, they smother the love that seems to lie deeper and closer to the real self. This is probably why there is so much pain in not loving. The life that is not able to express the love which is so integral to it grows deformed.”

Past

“Your whole past was but a birth and a becoming.”

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944)

We know that the nature of life is to grow. And so here we are. And we couldn’t have gotten here without everything that has happened in the past. It is the same way for society as it is for individuals. Whatever has happened throughout history has had an impact on how we have grown and changed as a nation, and as a planet. We’re all connected. And the more that we grow as individuals, the greater the impact will be on our communities and our countries.

On Tuesday, November 26 at 7:05 a.m. PST, the new Moon in Sagittarius will rise. New Moons occur when the Sun and Moon unite in the sky, sharing the same degree of an astrological sign. In a nutshell, this means our core identity (Sun) and emotions and feelings (Moon), align.

Inner Journey:

APPRECIATION

“You can never get to peace and inner security without first acknowledging all of the good things in your life. If you’re forever wanting and longing for more without first appreciating things the way they are, you’llstay in discord.”
— Doc Childre and Howard Martin

Develop an attitude of gratitude. We discover a sense of wholeness as we appreciate both the small and big things in our lives. And it really helps to remember to appreciate ourselves. Appreciation is more than just acceptance — it’s respect and admiration. Let go of criticism and self-abuse.

“Generally, appreciation means some blend of thankfulness, admiration, approval, and gratitude. In the financial world, something that ‘appreciates’ grows in value. With the power tool of appreciation, you get the benefit of both perspectives: as you learn to be consistently thankful and approving, your life will grow in value.”
— Doc Childre and Howard Martin

Conversation

“Must we always talk for victory, and never once for truth, for comfort, and joy?”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Conversation is a way for us to connect with people. And yet, how often do we feel like we need to impress someone, or demonstrate somehow that we have important opinions? If we could just drop that, and think more about connecting through Truth, about sharing ourselves rather than our “stuff” – then some meaningful conversation can take place. And we can experience that comfort and joy that leads to real friendship.

Daily Tarot: The High Priestess

Let intuition be your guide today and you won’t go too far wrong. If something doesn’t need to be done or delivered instantly, take your time and let events, situations, and people claim the time and attention they seem to want. Things want to sort themselves out for you, in the best ways. Don’t introduce complications. Be decisive when necessary but otherwise step up, too, and be pleasantly surprised.

Patheos-Pagan: Irish-American Witchcraft: Spiritual Prohibitions

Spirituality can end up affecting the way we live our lives, both due to sacred prohibitions within a tradition and also similar things a person might take on due to personal experiences. Sincerity

“Sincerity is the first characteristic of all men in any way heroic.”-Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881)

Heroism is when you put yourself on the line. And you can’t do that without being sincere. It’s an “all or nothing” kind of a thing – you can’t be a little bit sincere, you have to just go for it all the way to be a hero!
