MNN: Adorable baby pygmy hippopotamus born at Toronto Zoo

Watch out, Fiona! There’s a cute new baby hippo in North America, and she’s coming for your social media likes.
A female pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) calf was born at the Toronto Zoo on Aug. 10. The zoo announced her birth this week.

This was the first surviving calf for Kindia, a 12-year-old female, and the seventh pygmy hippopotamus born in the zoo’s history.

EarthSky News: This week, watch for a morning moon

Tonight – August 27, 2018 – the moon is in a waning gibbous phase. August 26 was the full moon, and a full moon rises at the vicinity of sunset and sets around the time of sunrise. So, for the mainland United States, the August 27th moon rises in the east roughly an hour after sunset. That means you can catch the daytime moon over your western horizon after sunrise. Woot!

One day I was outside (a rare moment off the couch!) and I heard a loud noise. The mirror above my couch had cracked and the crack looked like a flame, which I thought was just a cool coincidence of how glass would naturally crack.

Today’s Recipe: Grilled Watermelon

If you haven’t tried grilled watermelon yet, I beg you, please try it! It turns the common granular, sweet and juicy melon into some bizarre sweet and savoury, firm, meat-like treat that is beyond words. The great thing is, it’s so incredibly cheap and easy to do! This is the simple-as-can be method, but you could try using different spices if you’d like. I urge you to try this on its own, though, so you can experience this incredible texture. If you don’t have a grill, you could even bake it.
