I’m often asked about whether or not someone should offer their partner, friend, family member, or adult child advice. My response is always the same: “Have they asked you for advice?”

Of course, their answer is always “no.” If they had been asked to give advice, they would not be asking me if they should offer it.

Daily Good: To Keep Company With Oneself

Philosophy student Jennifer Stitt writes a thoughtful essay asking whether we would become lonely in solitude or find new depths? Philosophers have long distinguished between solitude and loneliness. Emerson celebrated the former, in which “nature may speak to the imagination, as she never does in company.” Socrates celebrated the soundless dialogue “which the soul holds with herself.” And in the 20th century, Hannah Arendt muses, “Thinking, existentially speaking, is a solitary but not a lonely business,” reminding us that the self “is the only one from whom you can never get away – except by ceasing to think.” { read more }

Be The Change

Take up with a friend the question of solitude. If there is a difference between loneliness and aloneness, can you put words to what it is? What must be shifted in my attitude so that loneliness can become solitude.

That is the bucket we would rely on to get us through loss, grief, hardship, or significant change.

Inner Journey:

FEARS OF MONEY

“We are all powerless as children, and money looms so powerfully … we don’t grow up to claim our financial power until we look money directly in the eye, face our fears, and claim that power back.”
— Suze Orman

How does money scare you?

In your journal, write down your greatest fears around money, and see what comes up. If emotions surface, as they undoubtedly will, let them come. Really feel your feelings, without judgment. They’ll give you valuable information.

“In all realms of life it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power, and fulfill your potential; it’s no different in the financial realm. In a buy-now, consume-now culture like ours, it takes courage to make the decisions today that may make us rich tomorrow. It takes courage to face up to the facts of old age and mortality and to prepare for them. It also takes courage to live generously, regardless of your financial state of affairs. …It takes courage to ask for what you want. And it takes courage to live honestly, wisely, true to yourself …and true to your desire for more.”

Awareness

“I break up through the skin of awareness a thousand times a day, as dolphins burst through seas, and dive again, and rise, and dive.”

-Annie Dillard, An American Childhood (1987)

How many of our waking hours do we spend actually “aware?” This is a beautiful analogy, I can just picture the dolphins playing, experiencing the freedom and joy that is theirs with every magnificent dive into the beautiful ocean. That same joy is ours, as well. We just need to break up through that skin of awareness and experience it!

If the complexity of our world, its problems, pains, and difficult questions can feel overwhelming at times, a look inside this classroom goes to show that with the right tools, a little bit of time, and a lot of space for self-expression, our world’s younger generations promise much hope as stewards of humanity.

COMMUNICATING WITHOUT WORDS

“The gesture is the thing truly expressive of the individual – as we think so will we act.”

Every movement and non-movement we make is a form of communication.

How do you communicate fear, withdrawal, avoidance, shutting down, disagreeing, and an uncaring attitude?

If you aren’t sure, others can probably tell you. Begin to pay attention to what your eyes and arms and facial expressions communicate. Our body language speaks louder than our words.

Inner Journey:

REAWAKEN YOUR CURIOSITY

“What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant intelligence of the child and the feeble mentality of the average adult.”
— Sigmund Freud

Why is this so?

Young children possess what Zen calls ‘beginner’s mind.’ They are awed and fascinated with the wonder of the world, open to discovering and experiencing new things. Anything is possible. Life is a great adventure.

For almost all of us, the systems that ‘educate’ us to be adults stifle our natural joy and curiosity. We lose touch with our innate appreciation of life. We forget how to dream.

The blessing is that with attention, patience and love, we can reawaken our sense of wonder. We can again dance with life.

WHAT NEEDS ATTENTION?

“We often spend so much time coping with problems along our path that we only have a dim or even inaccurate view of what’s really important to us.”
— Peter Senge

Where are you struggling in your life?

Look at your career, finances, relationships, growth, health and emotions. Where are you experiencing major challenges? Of these, which area most needs your attention at this time? Set an intention to face this struggle and resolve it. ATTENTION on your TENSION often releases it.

“The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there.” -John Buchan (1875-1940)

THE KEY TO CREATIVITY

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
— Albert Einstein

Do you know the key to creativity?

It rhymes with weed. It produces the oak tree. We often eat it or grind it up for flour. It can mean cause or origination. You guessed it. It is SEED.

Our minds love to associate one thing to another. But as we get stuck in very fixed patterns of thinking, we think of fewer and fewer connections. We are ruled by habits, associations and automatic responses. So we must stimulate our thinking with lots ofdifferent seeds to chart new paths in our brains.

“Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive.”
— Napoleon Hill

Dr. Jay Bansal lost his home in the Tubbs fire last year in California. It is up to each person whether to treat fire’s destruction as a tragic loss or as an opportunity for transformation and healing. In the fire’s aftermath, I saw up close examples of both: people mourning and nearly broken apart by the loss of all their material possessions, and people humbled and broken open by the opportunity to purify and lighten.” Bansal shares more in this insightful article. { read more }

Reality

“We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.”

-Iris Murdoch

Have you ever been to Disneyworld? It’s a beautiful place – colorful, clean, fun, and full of surprises! And when we’re there, we know that it is all illusion – that it is all there for our enjoyment. We experience the rides as entertainment, even the scary roller-coasters. Yet when we’re in our own “world” we tend to take things so seriously. What would happen if we approached life as our own amusement park? Knowing that one ride takes us for a spin and another shakes us up and another lets us sit back and relax? What a concept! Then we could stop looking for reality all around us and start finding it inside of us.

TWO VIEWS

“… no matter what our difficulties may be, we recognize that there is a deep untroubled stream flowing below all surface troubles and that we are of one substance with that stream. The soul knows no difficulties.”
— James Thornton

Masters teach that we can experience two completely different states of reality at the same time — from the personality and from the soul.

Author Pema Chödron talks about being hungry, cold and tired but at that same time deeply content. Ram Dass speaks of how the emotional heart can be breaking while we recognize that all is unfolding perfectly.

Allowing our soul to be present with the discomforts of the personality shifts our experience of the discomforts.

“True self simply refers to the aspect of our being that is completely aware of its expanded nature no matter what we may be experiencing in our lives.”

Appearances change. Nothing in this exterior world stays the same. Have you ever gone to visit a place, only to return several years later and not even recognize it? Buildings go up and down, tenants move in and out, trees grow, signs change. People change, too. We all start out as babies, and our features mature as we age. Our hairstyles and clothes change with the trends. But what stays the same? Spirit. We can trust that love never goes out of style, and never moves away.

The universe conspires in bringing us closer to our destiny because of this cosmic connection. It is beyond the comprehension of those who have never experienced it.

EarthSky News: Orion and Sirius the Dog Star

Tonight – August 29, 2018 – look for a first hint of the changing season in the predawn sky: Orion the Hunter and Sirius the Dog Star. The very noticeable constellation Orion the Hunter rises before dawn at this time of year, recognizable for the short straight line of three stars that make up Orion’s Belt. And the sky’s brightest star Sirius – sometimes called the Dog Star because it’s part of the constellation Canis Major the Greater Dog – follows Orion into the sky as the predawn darkness gives way to dawn.

Patheos-Pagan: A Guide to Forgiveness (By a Witch Who Sucks at Forgiving):

Lately on the Facebook feeds, a video about forgiveness which, although it’s from a Christian pastor, has been making waves in Pagan circles. The bolt-cutter image is wonderful. I’ve been working with this image in my meditations. Sometimes it works better than others. I have a long way to go.

Inner Journey:

ON FREEDOM

“Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us.”
— Stephen Covey

A Greek myth can help us understand the freedom that comes with power of choice.

In the Underworld, Sisyphus was condemned to roll a large stone up a hill from which it always rolled down again. Realistically, he was trapped in an endless cycle of rolling the stone. When he perceived himself to be imprisoned by the curse, he was a victim.

At one point, however, he turned the tables — he changed his mind and decided to CHOOSE to roll the stone up the hill. In doing so, he empowered himself and defused the curse.

“Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you.”
— Jean-Paul Sartre

“One cannot make a slave of a free person, for a free person is free even in a prison.”
— Plato

The trick is learning to maintain an unwavering focus upon your desired end result, your completed dream, the “finish line,” without insisting upon or contemplating its means of attainment, no matter how logical, obvious, or tempting it may seem.

Reality

“All our interior world is reality – and that perhaps more so than our apparent world.” -Marc Chagall
Love, joy, bliss, peace – we experience all this in our interior world, yet we cannot draw a picture or take a photo of exactly what it looks like. Our interior world is so vast, so filled with amazing gifts. Yet where do we place our attention? We’re busy trying to make our apparent world, our exterior world, look good. When we look within, we find the abundance that we so desperately seek. It is there all the time!

MBG: Research Just Found That People Tend To Have ‘Benevolence Bias’ — Here’s Why We Should Actively Change That

People judge each other very, very quickly. First impressions are made literally within a tenth of a millisecond, and studies have shown people continue to stick to their first impressions even after being presented with facts proving those snap assessments wrong. In other words, the way someone perceives you at the moment you meet—independent of anything you might say or do later—can have an enormous impact on your relationship with that person.

Elephant Journal: Getting back to Ourselves when Everything Feels Off (& we Don’t Know Why).

The first time I experienced feeling off—for no particular reason—was in fourth grade.
I remember, as my mom pulled into the half-egg of Cottonwood Intermediate school’s drive, thinking about having to sit through that morning assembly. I imagined a knife digging into the back of my throat, sharp, and working to cut loose a cry.

MNN: Improve your odds of having a lucid dream with these 3 techniques

Lucid dreaming, the act of realizing we’re dreaming and exerting some control over both our actions and the narrative, is something many of us have experienced at one point or another. Most of the time these all-access tickets to the wilds of our imagination occur by chance. But what if you could improve the odds of turning every night into a choose-your-own-adventure trip down the rabbit hole?

Inner Journey:

LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that man can alter his life simply by altering his attitude of mind.”
— William James

Here is one perspective on levels of consciousness and some descriptive words to help us identify the differences:
• Not conscious – instinctual, follower
• Subconscious – habitual, robotic, reactive
• Conscious – aware, intelligent, conceptual, reflective
• Superconscious – intuitive, guiding, truthful, loving, universal

Reflect on how you typically move through your day. As we use our minds more consciously, we open up to the superconsciousness.

“Utilizing your conscious mind to direct the subconscious mind to enter into communication and harmony with the universal mind is the secret of personal power.”
— Delfin Knowledge System

Reality

“Nothing which is at all times and in every way agreeable to us can have objective reality. It is of the very nature of the real that it should have sharp corners and rough edges, that it should be resistant, should be itself. Dream-furniture is the only kind on which you never stub your toes or bang your knee.”

-C.S. Lewis

We’ve often heard the phrase “harsh reality.” As if reality can smack us in the face. But that smack could just be a wake-up call to alert us to the bigger “reality.” When we stub a toe, we’re brought immediately to the present moment! Living in present-moment awareness we can more clearly see what is real and what is not, what is important and what is dispensable.
