Ever since I embarked on a zero-waste journey, I’ve realized that it’s a long, slow process that brings about new challenges every day. When you really pay attention to your trash production, things that you’ve never thought twice about doing before�accepting a sample at the grocery store, sorting through mail�can lead to a fair amount of waste.

One of the most difficult moments in the transition so far came when I realized I simply couldn’t last any longer without getting a haircut.

Focus on your dreams, not your disasters

It is easy to get stuck in the thought cycle of trying to fix or change something that has already happened. Replaying the �what if� scenario to figure out another possible outcome is common. But this only leads to a futile effort. You have no ability to change the past. However you do have the ability to focus on creating your future. Remember that your thoughts lead your actions. Knowing this it is important to make sure to focus your thoughts on what you want not what you had or didn�t get.

Release your past to the past and focus on what it is you want to achieve for your future. Purposefully direct your attention to what you want to achieve. Do not let your mind hold you hostage to something that could have been by immediately refocusing all thoughts of past actions or consequences onto what you dream about.

Travelling brings me wonderful opportunities to build awareness. When I get into the car, for example, I set an intention to drive well and stay alert to what other drivers and pedestrians are doing. When I realize that my mind has drifted and I’ve slipped into autopilot, I gently bring my focus back to the present.

It’s also a time when I can pay attention to my reactions. Does irritation arise when someone drives too quickly or slowly, or when I get stopped by a yellow light? Being aware of the irritation gives me the opportunity to acknowledge and then release it. If I choose to, I can be at peace anywhere – even on the road!

I took advantage of great holiday sales on both cranberries and sweet potatoes to make these excellent muffins. I made some substitutions, and will write the recipe both as written and my version. This is a recipe that freezes well and is so good and easy to make. My thrift store mini-chopper made chopping the cranberries so easy and fast.

Technology has offered us some amazing conveniences – but at what expense? Do we hole up with our computers rather than socialize with our fellow travelers? Do we make a habit of eating fast food rather than enjoying the wholesomeness of something freshly prepared at home? Where, for the sake of “progress,” have we gone awry? When we remember the lessons we have learned in the past and build on them, then we make progress. It’s not necessarily about making life “easier” but about experiencing the beauty that is already there.
