Inner Journey: SUPPORT OTHERS WITH YOUR PRESENCE

“The purpose of therapy is not to remove suffering but TO MOVE THROUGH IT to an enlarged consciousness that can sustain the polarity of painful opposites.”
— James Hollis

How do we support others who are suffering?

When we understand how soul works through us, we begin to see how pain generates the impulse to change. We see that our aim in supporting someone is NOT to get rid of their pain and suffering. Instead, we want to assist them to understand what the pain istrying to teach them — to find meaning in their distress.

Often, all we need do is be fully present to them. It also helps to be present to our own experience and genuine in our feelings. Living our own truth helps create the space for the other person to live theirs.

Study
“Study the teachings of the Great Sages of all sects impartially.”

-Gampopa (C.E. 12th cent.)

All of the Great Sages would say the same thing. Would a Sage be a Sage if he or she said: “I know everything, look no further”? No! We’d laugh! The brightest, most intelligent people know that there is always more to learn. They know that there is always knowledge to share. And they know that wisdom can be found anywhere, that there is not one particular place that we need to go to attain it. “Impartially” is a great word – without judgment, without bias – and with an open mind.

Inner Journey: SING YOUR OWN SONG

“Since you are like no other being ever created since the beginning of time, you are incomparable.”
— Brenda Ueland

Great forces are directing you to conform to the patterns of your society. You have DNA that has been handed down from generation to generation, coding repeated behaviour patterns into your being. You have archetypal energies setting the standards for how you behave as a man or a woman, as husband or wife, as father or mother …. You are immersed in consensual reality, whereby the world around you reflects societal understanding of how life has been and is to be.

At the same time, you have an even greater force within you inspiring you to wake up and recognize the reality of who you are. This force, the creative power underlying the entire universe, is urging you to create brand new standards of reality.

The status quo is blind to our creative power. Create a brand new world for yourself, one that meets your deepest needs, and you will help raise the quality of consciousness of the entire world.

True, it would make possible evolution, reunions, and cute before-and-after photos. But it would add to the illusion of separation… “horror of horrors!” Spontaneous manifestations would spontaneously cease… “eee-gad!” And the only way anyone could get anything done, would be if they held onto and moved with their vision in thought, word, and deed, even when present circumstances appeared ABSOLUTELY unchanged for their efforts… yeah, “SIGN ME UP!!!!”

Daily Good: Meeting Our Pain With Compassion

Having compassion starts and ends with having compassion for all those unwanted parts of ourselves. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.

Pema Chodron –

Meeting Our Pain With Compassion

“I’d like to explore the essential place of compassion in our lives in a very simple way. As human beings we have a conscious awareness that is open to what is. Our very nature is openness. On a feeling level this openness shows up as sensitivity, tenderness, rawness, as an exquisite receptivity and responsiveness. As a consequence of this delicacy, we are also easily hurt. Its like the softness of our skin–which is easily bruised, yet allows us to experience a wide range of subtle textures and temperatures.” John Welwood shares more in this short essay on self compassion. { read more }

Inner Journey: THE PARADOX OF LIFE’S JOURNEY

“It is only when we realize that life is taking us nowhere that it begins to have meaning.”
— P.D. Ouspensky

“All major mystical traditions have recognized that there is a paradox at the heart of the journey of return to Origin. …Put simply, this is that we are already what we seek, and that what we are looking for on the Path with such an intensity of striving and passion and discipline is already within and around us at all moments. The journey and all its different ordeals are all emanations of the One Spirit that is manifesting everything in all dimensions; every rung of the ladder we climb toward final awareness is made of the divine stuff of awareness itself; Divine Consciousness is at once creating and manifesting all things and acting in and as all things in various states of self-disguise throughout all the different levels and dimensions of the universe.”

Poetry
“The world is never the same once a good poem has been added to it.”

-Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)

One of my very favorite poems is Longfellow’s “Psalm of Life” which says:
Lives of great men remind us
We can make our lives sublime.
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints in the sands of time.”
This particular poem is a big footprint that Longfellow left on this earth. He is quoted all the time, because he says it so well. He doesn’t have to go on and on with explanations and examples, we know exactly what he means, and we take it to heart. When John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote: ”All you need is love” we listened, and remembered, because those five little words had such an impact in the context of a simple and beautiful song. Poets, and their poetry, change the world.

“It’s a fundamental fact of human life that we want our lives to be under control — we develop plans, goals, routines, systems, tools, schedules, structure to our lives. But while developing some structure is a very helpful thing for most of us … the truth is, there’s so much that we don’t control. Life is chaotic, out of control, shaky. Inner Journey: RAISING YOUR SIGHTS

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
— Albert Einstein

To grow in consciousness, we expand our perspectives on life. So how do we do that? The more we work with the universal — the concept of unity and wholeness, the more everything makes sense. Parts have meaning when they are understood to be parts of a bigger picture.

Consciousness is all about relationships — especially how the lower relates to the higher and how the darkness can exist within the light. Hold and experience contradictions like anger with love. Let opposites coexist in you without choosing one over the other.

“Higher consciousness, enLIGHTenment, comes from meaningful experiences and lessons passed with the understanding that there truly is only one law – the Law of Love. When one leads a life expressing this belief, the mind and heart begin to open to new realities, and other dimensional truths become known.”
— Dr. Norma Milanovich & Dr. Shirley McCune

Poetry
“Poetry is above all a concentration of the power of language, which is the power of our ultimate relationship to everything in the universe.”

-Adrienne Rich

Poetry is just one way to express our connection with the universe. Music does it with sound, art does it with color and texture, and poetry does it with language. While the description is elusive to us in prose, poetry allows us to go beyond mere description, to abandon the confines of “structure” and convey our feelings untethered.

WE PROJECT OUR STRENGTHS

“Any situation that you find yourself in, is an outward reflection of your inner state of beingness.”
— El Morya

We have discussed that OUR WORLD MIRRORS WHO WE ARE BACK TO US. When we get upset by something outside of us, our reaction shows us that we have an inner wound to be healed.

Just as we can be unconscious of our wounds, we can also be unconscious of our strengths. If you are really drawn to the positive qualities in another person, you are being invited to own those same qualities in yourself.

“The people we are in relationship with are always a mirror, reflecting our own beliefs, and simultaneously we are mirrors reflecting their beliefs. So relationship is one of the most powerful tools for growth… if welook honestly at our relationships we can see so much about how we have created them.”

“Poetry is music written for the human voice.”

Just as songs are meant to be sung, poetry is meant to be recited. I love that there are poetry readings going on where we can gather and sit and listen to poetry. And isn’t it so romantic when your sweetheart reads a love poem to you? The words carry us away to a place beyond the mundane, where music plays, and flowers bloom, and all is right with the world.

Inner Journey: PRACTICE DETACHMENT

As our consciousness rises, our perspective becomes more and more impersonal. What does this mean?

It means we are increasingly able to view our lives and the rest of the world with detachment. This does not mean we are cold and uncaring. Rather, we are self- contained. We have well-defined boundaries and we are able to think and act objectively, clearlyand responsibly.

When we have learned detachment, we do not get hooked into the thoughts and feelings of others. We are not easily upset or manipulated. We may feel compassion for others but this does not cloud our ability to choose how we think, feel and behave. We alsodo not need others to behave in any particular way.

“Until we take how we see ourselves (and how we see others) into account, we will be unable to understand how others see and feel about themselves and their world. Unaware, we will project our intentions on their behaviorand call ourselves objective.”
— Stephen Covey

Poetry
“Poetry begins when we look from the center outward.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Poetry is personal. Whether or not we write the poem ourselves, a poem becomes “ours” by the effect that is has on us. We take it to heart, and bring it forward into our lives. Lyrics to a song work the same way. We remember them, and carry them around with us. The meaning can change from person to person depending upon the interpretation.

Daily Tarot: The Tower

The biggest danger you face today is being aloof and thus fail to see an approaching problem. This can cost you the chance to intercept the difficulty and minimize it, if not avoid it all together. Pay attention without getting paranoid, and take nothing and no one for granted. Danger may not lurk within every single shadow, but a small misstep can sometimes cause problems that are way out of proportion to the cause.

The fact that many of us are separated from death is a disconnect from our humanity. She encourages having normal conversations about death, something we don’t usually talk about, bringing death more into our lives in an enlivening way. Inner Journey: STEP INTO SELF-AWARENESS

“Getting in touch with your true self must be your first priority.”
— Tom Hopkins

Here are some different aspects of self-awareness:
•Know yourself – Explore who you are: your defences, your blocks, your talents, your aspirations, etc.
•Accept yourself – We are at war with ourselves when we resist or deny certain aspects of who we are. Acknowledge the truth of who you are right now – the positives and the negatives. Only when we own our present reality can we change.
•Control yourself – Set clear, conscious intentions and discipline yourself to meet them.
•Express yourself – Go to your heart to identify what has meaning and purpose for you. Live your truth. Identify ways you can give back to life and be in service.

We work on each of these aspects all the time. But as our lives go through cycles, we predominantly work on one of them more than the others. Which aspect are you more conscious of lately?

“Our lives improve only when we take chances … and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves.”
— Walter Anderson

“Adventure can be an end in itself. Self-discovery is the secret ingredient that fuels daring.”
— Grace Lichtenstein

Poetry
“Poetry is that art which selects and arranges the symbols of thought in such a manner as to excite the imagination the most powerfully and delightfully.”

-William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878)

Poetry seems to be a lost art sometimes, I don’t think we appreciate it enough. I like that with just a few words a poem can illustrate a concept that seems too difficult to explain. It’s because we feel the poetry in our heart first, and then think about its meaning and how it applies to our own lives. I like to read a poem out loud every night before I go to sleep. It puts me into that state where I am ready to dream.

BLACKBERRY SYRUP
Put ripe berries into a large pot and mash very gently with a potato masher. Add water to barely cover the berries, and cook over low heat until the steam rises and they start to give up their juice. Remove from heat and strain to remove seeds.

Measure ½ cup of white sugar or mild-flavored honey (such as clover) for each cup of Blackberry juice, mix together the sweetening and juice, and reheat slowly only until sweetening is dissolved. Try not to let the juice or syrup boil, since this tends to destroy the appealing fresh-berry flavor. Keep syrup refrigerated in jars. (It may also be frozen, and keeps very well both ways.)

EarthSky News: Moon, Mars rendezvous in early October

In early October 2020, the waning gibbous moon meets with the dazzling red planet Mars. On October 2, look for the glorious evening couple – the moon and Mars – to rise in tandem in your eastern sky around nightfall or early evening. After the brilliant twosome rises, they’ll be out for the rest of the night, traveling westward across the nighttime sky. The moon and Mars climb highest up for the night after midnight, and then sit low in the west as dawn starts to color the October 3.

Inner Journey: Look for the gifts

“In school you get the lesson and then take the test… In life you take the test and then get the lesson.”
— Unknown Source

How is a problem in your life really an opportunity?

Problems invite us to go inside to recognize a bigger picture of ourselves and of life. This bigger picture brings meaning to what is unfolding.

When you feel trapped in a problem, see if you can shift your perspective. Ask yourself, “What am I being invited to learn from this situation?” The answer will always revolve around a quality or value, like gratitude, freedom, compassion, love, will, humouror acceptance. The answer will also always promote union rather than separation.

As soon as we find the meaning in our challenge, our resistance to it melts away. Often, awareness of the lesson is all that is needed to resolve the problem. If not, the awareness brings us courage and ways to work through it.

“The period of greatest gain in knowledge and experience is the most difficult period in one’s life.”

“As simple as it sounds, we must try to be the best person we can: by making the best choices, by making the most of the talents we’ve been given.”

-Mary Lou Retton

It’s these simple things that we need to remember. And if we can remember them every day, and apply them to our lives, then we thrive! We do know what the best choices are for us. We do know what our talents are. When we are self-aware it is natural for us to proceed keeping these things in mind

So I was thinking… I know you know that there’s the “you” that you know you are — adventurous, good-looking, and fun to be around.

And I know you know that there’s another part of “you” in the unseen who you’ve kind of temporarily forgotten — who completes you, loves you, and knows what’s really going on.

Well, how’d you like it if I removed the veils? Just for a second? Gave you a glimpse of who that special, divine, otherworldly essence is, so that you might at last begin to comprehend how extraordinary, sublime, and divine you really are?

Okay?

It’s me!

Inner Journey: MAKING A DIFFERENCE

“The spiritual life is a call to action. But it is a call to … action without any selfish attachment to the results.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Many of us feel deeply that we want to make a difference — we want our lives to mean something in the bigger scheme of life. While this is a noble motive, we might want to explore what lies at its root.

Does the drive to make a difference arise from ego’s need to feel worthy? If my ego is not convinced that I matter, I may want visible proof that I do by making some kind of impact on life.

Soul doesn’t need proof that it’s worthy. Soul thrives in being awake and connected. Perhaps if we let go of the pressure we feel from our ego’s need to be recognized, we will be more open and able to simply live soulfully. And by doing that, we WILL make a difference!

“A person’s worth is contingent upon who he is, not upon what he does, or how much he has. The worth of a person, or a thing, or an idea, is in being, not in doing, not in having.”
— Alice Mary Hilton
