ThoughtCo: Cernunnos – Wild God of the Forest

Cernunnos is a horned god found in Celtic mythology. He is connected with male animals, particularly the stag in rut, and this has led him to be associated with fertility and vegetation. Depictions of Cernunnos are found in many parts of the British Isles and western Europe. He is often portrayed with a beard and wild, shaggy hair–he is, after all, the lord of the forest

Daily Good: The Atomic Tree

This moving video takes us on a journey into the memories of one of the world’s most revered trees, a 400 year old Japanese white pine bonsai. The tree’s rings hold stories from its inception as a tiny seed, through its early years surrounded by monks who prayed in the surrounding forest. It holds memories of sunlight and purifying rain. Tended by the loving touch and care of five generations of the Yamaki family, the tree and the family survived the devastation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. In 1976 it was gifted to the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. where it remains as a symbol of the merger of lives, forests, and the human family. { read more }

MNN: 12 enchanting quirks of the rare ghost orchid

The ghost orchid is aptly named for a few reasons. Its white flowers have a vaguely spectral appearance, and they seem to hover in the forest due to an illusion created by the leafless plant. This effect also makes the rare orchid even harder to find, especially outside the brief, unpredictable window when it blooms in summer.

PONDER THE RULES

“To do exactly as your neighbors do is the only sensible rule.”
— Emily Post

Do you have strong and clear definitions for what is acceptable and what is not?

Where have these rules come from? What’s the purpose of these judgments? What do they protect?

Can we explore new territory for ourselves and others by allowing and even welcoming spontaneity, exuberance and surprises?

“The idea that men are created free and equal is both true and misleading: men are created different; they lose their social freedom and their individual autonomy in seeking to become like each other.”

Vision

“Visions are like dreams, only they occur in the waking state.”

-Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)

Are we awake? Are we thinking clearly? Are we seeing clearly? When we can answer these questions affirmatively and have a vision that has caught our attention, we need to do something about it. There’s a reason why certain visions come to us at certain times in our lives. And there’s a reason why certain visions come to certain people and not others. It doesn’t matter where this vision comes from, once we have it, it is ours. And it is up to us to act on it, to do what we can to make this world a better place.

Vision

“The idea is to seek a vision that gives you purpose in life and then to implement that vision. The vision by itself is one half, one part, of a process. It implies the necessity of living that vision, otherwise the vision will sink back into itself.”

-Lewis P. Johnson, 1987

I think we all have lots of visions throughout our lives. Some we shrug off, we’re not attached to. Others seem to come to us easily. And then there are those that give us a purpose in life. Those are the ones that are important. Those are the ones that push us to learn and grow. We can’t just let those visions go, we have to do something about them. Those are the visions that are life-changing, world-changing!

Vision

“We are all visionaries, and what we see is our soul in things.”

-Henry Amiel (1821-1881)

Ah! This is something to think about – what we see is our soul in things… not necessarily that we are seeing with our soul, but that we relate, we identify, with our visions. When we have a vision, we become a creative force, bringing that vision into reality. We see that the vision is not only a “thing”, it is a part of who we are.

PROBLEMS OR SOLUTIONS?

“If you expect the best, you will be the best. Learn to use one of the most powerful laws in this world; change your mental habits to belief instead of disbelief. Learn to expect, not to doubt. In so doing, you bring everything into the realm of possibility.”

It’s so easy to lock our minds onto problems rather than opening to receive solutions. But what we think is what we get. This is so important! If we continually focus on problems and negatives, that’s where we’ll stay.

Wonder

“Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of our science.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Emerson always states it so well. Wonder is that “what if” that spurs us on to progress. It is the seed of science, but also the seed of creativity. We come up with ideas before we can make them into a reality – and those ideas come from wonder. Let’s make it a point to spend some time just wondering today.

SPACE TO EXPLORE

“No one can find his work, what he really wants to put all of himself into, when everything he does he is made to do by others. This kind of searching must be done freely or not at all.”
— John Holt

We all need space — free from demands, deadlines, expectations and judgments — to explore who we are and what life is all about. Free time, with absolutely no agenda, is rich with potential. How can we grow if we have no space and freedom to dream?

“Deny children — or anyone else — the chance to do ‘nothing,’ and we may be denying them the chance to do ‘something’ — to find and do any work that is truly important to themselves or to someone else.”

PERCEPTION DEFINES OUR REALITY

“The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.”
— Henri Bergson

Our entire universe is energy — vibrating waves of pure potential. The electromagnetic vibrations of our consciousness interact with the energetic potential that exists everywhere as the life force to ‘collapse’ the waves and create matter. So the patterns of our minds create the form of our world.

By simply observing a form, we influence it. We in turn are influenced by others. This challenges us to be more aware of the quality of our being and the vibrations we transmit.

“There is no reality in the absence of observation.”

Wonder

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder… he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”

-Rachel Carson, 1965

Children have this wide-eyed sense of wonder, everything is new to them, everything is a surprise. If we could just see through their eyes again for a day… look at a line of ants as a parade rather than a nuisance, see the clouds as dancing rather than threatening rain… how might this change our perspective? Wonder brings with it a sense of contentment, the world looks good and we feel good in it! We can learn a lot from our kids.

Daily Good: In Pursuit of Silence

In this thought-provoking piece, George Prochnick, author of “In Pursuit of Silence”, calls on us to examine our relationship with the sounds, or their absence, around us. Drawing on the wisdom of Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, and others, Prochnick proposes that by shutting ourselves off to the noise of our surroundings, we shut ourselves off to the world, effectively losing our place within it. “At some point the inability to ‘hear oneself think,'” he argues, “becomes the inability to think at all.” Read on to learn more about how we can achieve a greater balance between the variety of naturally-sourced and man-made sounds we encounter and the interludes of stillness and silence that beckon our attention. { read more }

OVERWHELMED?

“Life does not happen to us, it happens from us.”
— Mike Wickett

Are you easily overwhelmed? If so, answer this question in your journal:

While growing up, what did you experience too much of?

Experiencing too much of something leads to feelings of overwhelm. When we’re young, overwhelm can lead us to believe that we are not capable or that we are not good enough. These are power issues.

Awareness of when we are feeling overwhelmed can help us go inside, claim our power and change our experience of any situation.

“When we know that the cause of something is in ourselves, and that we (ourselves) are one of the few things in the universe that we have the right and ability to change, we begin to get a sense of the choices we really do have, an inkling of the power we have, a feeling of being in charge… of our lives, of our future, of our dreams.”

“Wonder is music heard in the heart, is voiceless.”

FORGIVENESS BRINGS JOY

“The greatest evil that can befall man is that he should come to think ill of himself.”
— Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Do you feel worthy of having joy? Do you feel you deserve it?

The first step to activating our inner joy is to eliminate the blocks to it. We can start by truly forgiving ourselves and all others. Forgiveness calls for a shift in our perception. It is easier to forgive ourselves and others when we really understand that each of us has always done the very best we knew to do at that time.

“If we don’t forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us, we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt, because guilt is isolating, while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves, to other people, and to a larger whole.”

A marmot reacts with shock as it ventures out from its burrow and is rushed by a Tibetan fox in a meadow in China’s Qilian Mountains National Nature Reserve. Yongging Bao captured the intensity of the moment, earning him the Wildlife Photographer of the Year honors for his predator-prey image.

EarthSky News: Summer Triangle and galactic equator

Tonight, use the Summer Triangle and the constellation Cygnus the Swan to locate the galactic equator – the great circle on the celestial sphere that bisects the glowing band of stars that we call the Milky Way. Sure, it’s autumn here in the Northern Hemisphere, but the three brilliant stars that make up the Summer Triangle still shine in our sky. You’ll find them way up high on October nights.

Patheos-Pagan: 8 Essential Elements of Good Pagan Ritual

We’ve all suffered through bad rituals at one time or another – I’ll spare you the further suffering of listing examples. But sometimes what’s even more frustrating than a bad ritual is a good ritual that’s just one thing away from being a great ritual – the kind that inspires participants to do great things and that people still talk about months and even years later

Inner Journey:

CREATE SPACE

“All this talk and turmoil and noise and movement and desire is outside of the veil; within the veil is silence and calm and rest.”
— Bayazid al-Bistami

We need to create space if we desire to change and grow. Only in emptiness can meaning, intuitive guidance and truth arise.

Give yourself space by spending time in nature, taking an hour or day off, enjoying quiet moments for reflection. Take time to smell the roses. Breathe in the wonder of life and its bounty. Open so your deeper awareness and imagination can percolate through mundane thoughts and activities. Let go of both resistance and force to allow yourself to connect more deeply to life.

“I do only want to advise you to keep growing quietly and seriously throughout your whole development; you cannot disturb it more rudely than by looking outward and expecting from outside replies to questions that only your inmost feeling in your most hushed hour can perhaps answer.”
— Rainer Maria Rilke

“I am glad that so much movement happens in this stillness.”
— Richard Land

Today’s Recipe: Pineapple Pepper Prawns

I love making this dish in the fall because of the colours that match the season. It’s got a nice spicy kick from the chili paste and a sweetness from the juicy pineapple. It’s a rather nice transitional kiss goodbye to the summer. This dish is great for those trying to stick to something more low-carb.

Art

“Art attracts us only by what it reveals of our most secret self.”

-Jean-Luc Godard

It seems that certain pieces of art “speak” to us. Somehow we can relate to them. Maybe we see something beyond even what the artist intended. It shows how we are all connected. Amazing, how something static can tug on our emotions, touch us somewhere we thought was unreachable. Maybe that’s the whole purpose of art.
