Mind Body Green: 5 Quick Ways To Finally Put An End To Impostor Syndrome

Often when I sit down at my desk to prepare for a big interview, write an outline for a speaking engagement, or work on a new article, whispers of self-doubt swirl through my mind.

Before I even begin, the fear can start to get to me. “You know nothing,” a little voice says. “Who are you to deserve this opportunity? No one wants to hear what you have to say.” I know I’m not the only one. How many of you have heard those exact words echo through your mind—maybe after a promotion, an invitation, or being asked to pioneer a new project? Why, hello there, impostor syndrome.

Impostor syndrome was first named by a pair of clinical psychologists in the 1970s,

Spirituality & Health: 5 ways To Declutter Your Social Life

We declutter our drawers, our cars and our closets. How often do we tidy up our social lives? They probably aren’t terribly streamlined, as pruning them sounds so  severe. It’s okay to take stock. Consider the research of esteemed anthropologist Robin Dunbar, who studies the evolutionary structure of social networks in primates. He’s found there’s a ceiling to just how many meaningful relationships at a time we can have, and it’s based on brain size. For humans, it tops out at 150 about the size of a small village. More than that, it’s simply too hard to maintain. Let’s look at the idea of streamlining your friendships.

A Bountiful Moment:

Instead of saying “I can’t”  ask yourself  “what can I do” to create the solution.

Daily Thought: Stop repeating I can’t and starting thinking what am I doing or what can I do to change what is creating the current stress or difficult situation. Every day place your focus on the solution to direct tomorrows living. The solution will allow you to maintain control over your life and your future.

Daily Practice: Pay attention today to the times you tell yourself you cannot do something. Why are you telling yourself that? Note what is happening and why you feel like you have no power over what is occurring. Then take a deep breathe and think of every possible solution to change what you cant do. Do not dismiss anything, every thought counts until you find one that works. Apply the possible and be in control.

Have a Great Day and Believe in Yourself!

Patheos-Pagan: Finding The Balance

I’m sure, after the post I made about Supergirl a couple of years ago, it will come as no surprise to you that I’m a huge fan of Star Wars. With the digital release yesterday of The Last Jedi, I have it on the brain  specifically, the way the newest trilogy is appreciating true balance of light and dark, and the spectrum between.

Competing Narratives

I have struggled for most of my life with western culture’s dominant narrative of light equalling good and dark equalling evil. It’s an aspect of the great cosmic battle that we inherited from the Zoroastrians, and their influence on first Judaism and then Christianity

Inner Journey: Hope and Disappointment

“It’s precisely the disappointing stories, which have no proper ending and therefore no proper meaning, that sound true to life.”
— Max Frisch

“Don’t get your hopes up!”

Were you warned of this as a child? What does this say? It says that life is bound to disappoint you. It says, don’t aim high because you’re not likely to get what you want. It says that we can’t expect good things to happen to us.

As our thinking creates our reality, this kind of thinking dooms us to a mundane existence. It’s time to change our stories. Why not focus the immense power of our hearts and minds on bringing to fruition the very best life has to offer? Allow yourself to hope and believe in all possibilities.

“Hope is the companion of power, and the mother of success; for who so hopes has within him the gift of miracles.”
— Samuel Smiles

“The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.”
— Barbara Kingsolver

Today’s Recipe: Tangerine and Lime Bars

There are two reasons why I’ve made these scrumptious tangerine lime bars. First off, I love tangerine and lime flavours so much, I think they need to be stars of more foods. Secondly, my tangerine and lime trees really outdid my lemon tree this year, so when I went to pick fruit in my garden, this was the best idea for a sweet treat! This a very simplified recipe, so there is no egg separating or tempering necessary. The flavours aren’t as tart as lemon bars, they’re well rounded and velvety. I hope you give these a try. 🙂

Exuberant sufferers want to plant gardens, move to the country, start new projects and may daydream of an al fresco dinner or even about calling in sick to work. But most of all, spring gets us thinking about love. Spring is hormone-racing season.

 Patheos-Pagan:   7 Suggestions For A Shinto-Pagan Spring Equinox

I am exceedingly fortunate. My place of work, which is a Japanese organisation, gives us selected Japanese holidays as paid holidays in addition to the UK ones. And one of these holidays is Shunbun no Hi, or the Spring Equinox. I think I am one of the few Pagans in the UK who gets Ostara off without having to request it!

This is thanks to the fact that the Spring Equinox is an important day in Shinto and Buddhism, the two main religions in Japan which are more or less merged with each other. Its part of a seven-day period called Higan, which is a time for remembering the dead. You can read more about what the Spring Equinox means for the Japanese here.

 Kindness

“Kindness is wisdom; there is none in life but needs it, and may learn.” -Bailey

It is truly amazing that as we learn and grow and attain more wisdom, that we understand more and more the real value of the most simple things in life. Kindness is precious. It is healing and life-affirming and contagious! And kindness is readily available at all times. If there were a prescription for happiness, kindness would be one of the ingredients. A Bountiful Moment

Within each challenge lies the opportunity for growth

Daily Thought

Challenges present as a distraction to what needs to be accomplished. They can also present you with a block that will stop you from moving toward your goal(s). So it is important to remember that challenges are only a sign and opportunity for you to continue your growth, development and commitment. It is not what you see as the challenge that is the growth opportunity but you’re working through the challenge that gives you that present.

Daily Practice

Consciously look for the challenges and obstacles in your day. Do not search for what is easy today but purposefully look at what is hard for you. Pay attention to the situation and pay attention to your solution. After you have completed the challenge make a written or mental note of your strengths and personal attributes that got you through it. Rejoice in your abilities to overcome.

Inner Journey: Imprisoned By Your Thoughts

“Problems exist only in the human mind.”
— Anthony de Mello

For most of us, there’s always a long ‘to do’ list. That’s a fact.

And it’s easy to feel victimized. ‘Poor me!’ That’s not a fact – that’s a choice.

Experiment with your life to explore how much your mind is your jailer. Simply let go of the ‘oh woe’ kinds of thoughts. Silence your mind. Be right here, right now. Decide what you will do now and do it, without buying in to the mind’s sob story. When one task is done, you can then choose another.

Allowing the mind to agonize about the size of the ‘to do’ list just makes us tired before we even get started. It doesn’t have to be this way.

“Only kindness matters. We are God’s hands.” -Jewel

Ask anyone what they value most in a person, what they remember most about a person, and chances are that they will say ‘kindness.’ Kindness always makes such a positive and lasting impression! Inner Journey: Changing Consciousness

Why should we care about raising our consciousness? When we set an intention to change and grow, we begin a journey in which we move from coping, to learning and finally, to the enjoyment of living.

Here are some of the shifts we move through:

From dependence on the clock, to charting a direction, to moment-to-moment guidance from intuition.

From doing things right, to doing the right things, to being your true self.

From lack of self discipline to having personal willpower to being completely willing to express our essence.

From being out of control, to being in control, to trusting and letting go of the need to control.

With each step, we experience greater freedom, fulfillment and joy. Worth going for, don’t you think?

A Note from the Universe

Indeed,  there are Masters among you. Scattered throughout the continents to shine their lights as brightly as possible, simply by being themselves, living mostly “ordinary” lives. Until, with enough of them walking the earth, a tipping point will be reached at the deepest energetic levels so that all others will be raised ever higher into the light, simply for being in their midst, as if through osmosis.

Of course… there’s always been the risk that these Masters, once immersed into a sea of limited thinkers, might mistaken their “ordinary” lives as simply ordinary lives, think they’re simply one of the herd, and therefore not appreciate their unique perspectives, grasp their mission, or love themselves as they are, no matter what others think, and the whole osmosis thing won’t work.

How you holding up? Loving yourself?

MNN: Why Crafting Is Good For Mental Health

Our senior year of college, my roommate Gayle and I waited tables until closing time at a local restaurant. Wed get back to our dorm late, physically tired but mentally wired. Our conservative school didnt allow televisions in our dorms, so we couldnt plop ourselves in front of one to quiet our brains.

Instead, we took up counted cross stitching to relax. Wed sit there with needle, thread and canvas, methodically following patterns, sometimes chatting but more often in silence. Eventually our minds let go of the racing thoughts that goes with the quick turnover of tables on a weekend night, and we would be able to go to sleep.

Mind Body Green: How Changing Just 1% Of Your Day Can Completely Transform Your Life

Each of us shares at least one thing in common: We all have at our disposal 1,440 minutes in a single day. What we do with that time, however, is what ultimately makes us different.

As a life experiment, what would happen if you took just 1 percent of those 1,440 minutes, just 14 minutes and 24 seconds, roughly 15 minutes a day, and consciously tried to change your life? You can keep the other 99 percent of your day to do what you have to do, eat, sleep, go to work, take care of the kids, attend school, drive your sister to the doctor, surf your smartphone. Just 15 minutes. What would happen?

Inner Journey: Judgement Creates

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”
— Mother Teresa

We know the power of thoughts to create. Consider, then, the impact of our judgments. When we judge someone critically, those judgments have the power to affect the one being judged, if they are open to our perceptions. This is the case even when we don’t say what we’re thinking.

For example, if I judge someone to be fat, and that individual perceives him or herself to be fat and is sensitive to the opinions of others, my thoughts will reinforce their ‘fat’ experience.

Being aware of the impact of our judgments helps us let go of our tendency to judge.

“There are three kinds of violence: one, through our deeds; two, through our words; and three, through our thoughts. …The root of all violence is in the world of thoughts, and that is why training the mind is so important.”

Desire

“Desires are the pulses of the soul; as physicians judge by the appetite, so may you by desires.” ~Thomas Manton

Our desires tell us a lot about ourselves. Ask yourself today: “What do I want?” Look at that carefully and ask again: “What do I REALLY want?” Then look at that and ask: “Why do I want that?” Oftentimes that question will get you to the true answer of what you REALLY want! And how would you change your life if you had that? What would be different? Can you do that now? Play “what if” a little and see if you can get yourself closer to your goals right now

A Bountiful Moment

The load of tomorrow, added to the load of yesterday, carried today can make any person falter….Live for today!

Daily Thought:  If you think about what happened yesterday, or what is supposed to happen tomorrow you will lose time and the moments you should be living today. This emotional distraction will get you stuck in a negative self-banter. Focus on the now. Live in the moment and attend to the needs of the most current you.

Daily Practice: Work on staying in the present moment. Be conscious of your thoughts. If they are distractions from the now change them immediately by focusing on the things around you to ground you in the present moment. This will allow you to work on what needs to be done today vs. what wasn’t done yesterday or what needs to be done tomorrow. Enjoy your current day

Inner Journey: Value Just Being

“To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious.”
— Samuel Butler

Many of us have been taught to believe that we are valued for what we do, not just for who we are. ‘Doing’ is important, but to keep life in balance, we also need time to just ‘be.’

Henry David Thoreau expressed this so well in Walden Pond:

“There were times when I could not afford to sacrifice the bloom of the present moment to any work, whether of the head or hand.

“Sometimes, on a summer morning, I sat in my sunny doorway from sunrise till noon, rapt in a revery, amidst the pines and hickories and sumacs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness, while the birds sang around or flitted noiseless through the house, until by the sun falling in at my west window, or the noise of some traveller’s wagon on the distant highway, I was reminded of the lapse of time.

“I grew in those seasons like corn in the night, and they were far better than any work of the hands would have been.”

“Our desires always increase with our possessions; the knowledge that something remains yet unenjoyed, impairs our enjoyment of the good before us.”

-Samuel Johnson

As we continue on the spiritual path, we notice that our desires change. While we recognize that desire for material things is our human nature, the novelty of those things subsides. We yearn to experience our connection with God more fully. Our desire for spiritual growth moves us along the path.

MNN: Why planting a garden is better for bird-watching than filling a feeder

One of the most popular pastimes in the United States is bird-watching. The way millions of Americans participate is by placing a feeder in the backyard and waiting for the various species to arrive. While this has a few upsides — including being easy and creating a stationary place to watch the activity — backyard bird feeders also have downsides, including attracting unwanted critters from raccoons to coyotes to bears, to providing a small range of food to a small group of birds, with much of it getting wasted when it’s left scattered on the ground.  Read more………………

BELIEVE IN YOUR OWN SUCCESS

“What you believe yourself to be, you are.”
— Claude M. Bristol

Do you believe, deep down inside of you, that you can succeed in what you want to do?

Beliefs are strong, and they have the power to attract what is believed to us. If we doubt our ability to succeed, if we in fact believe we WON’T succeed, then sure enough, thats what will happen.

What do you believe about yourself? You have the power to change your beliefs, and that will change your outcome. Set goals you believe you can accomplish. Your beliefs will shape your actions. As you achieve these goals, you’ll begin to believe you are capable of succeeding and of doing even more.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT?

“Where you are headed is more important than how fast you are going. Rather than always focusing on what’s urgent, learn to focus on what is really important.”
— Stephen Covey

Time management is all about making decisions. At each step of the way, we want to choose activities that best support what we want to do with our lives. To do this, we need to be clear about our short and long-term goals.

Here’s a general question to ask yourself often: “Is this the best use of my time in terms of meeting my goals?” Sometimes, of course, we don’t have any choice. But ask yourself honestly, “Could I take more control if I really wanted to?” Often, we play the victim because we don’t want to make the effort to change our behaviour.

“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.'”

Desire

“Desire is the very essence of man.” – Benedict De Spinoza, Ethics

So, you have a desire… now what do you do with it? Of course, you want to fulfill it! We are busy fulfilling our desires everyday, and sometimes so easily that we aren’t even aware of what we are doing.

Let’s look at the mechanics of desire fulfillment:
1. Recognize the desire.
2. Evaluate the desire – do you REALLY want it?
3. Create an intention to fulfill the desire.
4. Release the desire to the universe – state your intention clearly.
5. Give up any attachment to the outcome… anything can happen, and
it’s usually better than we ever could have anticipated.
6. Let the universe handle the details – don’t try to control or
manipulate how things happen.
7. Express gratitude!

LIFE AS A MIRROR

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”
— C.G. Jung

We get clues about our unconscious programming if we watch our reactions, responses, feelings and thoughts about other people and events. Ask yourself: How do I judge or stereotype people? What pushes my buttons? What makes me angry or fearful or sad?

The outer incidents that trigger these reactions in me simply MIRROR my own nature. If I didn’t have beliefs around the issues that upset me, where would my reactions come from? If I didn’t have some internal reference, I wouldn’t react at all.

When outer events spark a reaction, we need to look inside to explore what’s going on.

Love is the great up-lifter, the strongest force there is. Love heals. Love grows. Love is the basis for life itself. Love is invisible, and yet ever-present. Love is the most valuable gift we will ever give or receive, and yet love is perfectly free.

Inner Journey

THE PATH TO WHOLENESS

We think that God has blessed us if we dont have too many troubles. In fact, religions have erroneously taught us that pain is punishment for our sins. We often ask, “What have I done wrong?” when things do not go the way we want.

Yet, to become ourselves in the truest and deepest sense, we must face our own duality, which of course includes facing our darkness. As souls we strive for wholeness, not for perfection.

At first, we really don’t know what is going on. We just find life difficult, challenging and often painful. Eventually, after much experience and reflection, we start to find meaning in it all. Eventually, we gladly accept the means whereby we can do the Soul work we have come for.

As we become conscious as Souls, we walk our journey purposefully, embracing the reality of our earthly nature along with the truth of our divine nature.

“When we are conscious of our personal uniqueness and our universal nature we express ourselves creatively. In this way we fulfill our dreams and our life purpose.”
— Andrew Schneider

A Note from the Universe

I do believe that the single most important thing I could ever, ever share with you,  with regard to maximizing the health, harmony, and happiness in your life, not to mention expediting the manifestation of your heart’s fondest desires, can be summed up in just one word:

Love yourself. Okay, two words. Love yourself all of the time. Okay, 6 words.

Loving you all of the time –

Today’s Recipe: Beef and Green Bean Rice (Loobia Polo)

Loobia Polo has been one of my favourite Persian rice dishes since I was a little kid. Its ingredients are rather simple to put together, but it’s truly an all-in-one kind of dish. I love it with a side of chutney or a big scoop of greek yogurt.

Love

“All’s love, yet all’s law.”-Robert Browning

Love and Law are two sides of the same coin. Everything is love, and at the same time, everything has that organizing power that we can totally count on. There is a reason why we love someone or something. There is a creative purpose to our love. We are not under some spell like the characters in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” We love who we love because God, the Universe, brought us together to learn and grow and experience more of our Selves. Love is divine, and yet love is totally practical.

If you’re new to mushrooming, you know that it’s wise to stick with foraging mushroom species you can easily identify and can’t mistake for an inedible species. The hedgehog mushroom is one of those wonderful species that is both easy to identify and easy to turn into a delicious meal.
