Samhain is the time of year when the nights grow darker, there’s a chill in the air, and there’s a thinning of the veil between our world and the realm of the spirits. For many Pagans this is a time of reflection and spiritual growth. Looking for a ceremony or ritual to celebrate the Pagan sabbat of Samhain? Here’s where you’ll find a number of rituals and ceremonies, all of which can be adapted either for solitaries or a group.

Daily Good: Holy Envy: The Key to Appreciating World Religions

“From an early age, Barbara Brown Taylor knew that she wanted to live a spiritual life.”It started early in my life,” she says, “a hunger for the beyond, for the transcendent, for the light within the light, the glow within the grass, the sparkle within the water.”Taylor went on to become an ordained Episcopal priest, working as rector of a church. But she later left her job with the church and began teaching the world’s religions at Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. As part of the course, Taylor invited members of different faiths into the classroom to share their beliefs. She also brought her students, who were mostly Christian, to mosques, synagogues and Buddhist and Hindu temples in an effort to help them better understand how various groups worship.” The author of ‘Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others’ shares more here. { read more }

Patheos-Pagan: Samhain: When the Veil is Thin

Samhain was originally an ancient Irish-Celtic holiday, but we know very little about how it was celebrated thousands of years ago. What we do know is that how it is celebrated today is radically different. Long ago, there were no glowing vegetables, trick-or-treating, Witches, or visits from the dead. Most of the trappings we associate with Samhain date only from the Christian era, though that doesn’t make any of them less real or witchy.

THEN AND NOW

“Time is not a line, but a series of now points.”
— Taisen Deshimaru

We understand time as a continuum. Our memories link the moments of the past and our imaginations draw on the patterns of our memories to project the future.

If we leave the movies of the mind behind, time can only be experienced now — moment by precious moment. Open in awareness to what is happening right now. Appreciate all that is. Immerse yourself in the joy and wonder of every now and life will be a gift.

“The responsibility for both present and future is in our own hands. If we live right today, then tomorrow has to be right.”

Persistence

“Diamonds are only chunks of coal,
That stuck to their jobs, you see.”

-Minnie Richard Smith, 1947

I love this because it applies in so many ways. Writers go about submitting their work and it gets rejected so many times, that they end up feeling like a chunk of coal! Or that their work, which they poured so much of their heart into, is just a chunk of coal. But, ah, when they stick to the job, keep writing, keep submitting – someone recognizes the beauty. The diamond comes shining through! We just can’t give up, no matter what business we’re in, or what we are going for. Our persistence pays off.

COMPASSION

“What I want in my life is compassion, a flow between myself and others based on a mutual giving from the heart.”
— Marshall B. Rosenberg

“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.”
— Thomas Merton

“When we experience the pain of another person, we instinctively want to take away that pain. But by taking away the other person’s pain, we also take away his or her opportunity to grow. To be truly compassionate, we must be able to share another person’s suffering and pain — knowing there is nothing we can do to relieve it and that we are not responsible for it, and yet knowing and understanding what that pain feels like.”

Every year around Halloween, I like to come up with a sweet treat that uses candies from trick-or-treating events. Persistence

“Rome was not built in a day.”

-John Clarke (1596-1658)

I’ve always heard this quote, and never knew who said it, so I was happy to come across it this time around. How appropriate! In this fast-paced society we tend to expect instant gratification. How often do you hear people complain about how slow their computers are, or their dial-up, or the pizza guy? And all that spills over into our expectations for ourselves. We want that great job NOW, that dream relationship NOW, enlightenment NOW! But we have to remember that there is always divine timing involved. The seed needs time to sprout, the sprout needs time to grow. We are like that sprout that needs to keep pushing up the dirt, keep reaching toward the sun. We’re growing every day.

Community

“Snowflakes, leaves, humans, plants, raindrops, stars, molecules, microscopic entities all come in communities. The singular cannot in reality exist.”

-Paula Gunn Allen, Grandmothers of the Light, 1991

When we think of the whole grand concept of “we are all one” – it’s kind of a stepping stone to think first of our own communities. We belong to lots of little groups – our families, our neighborhoods, our clubs and organizations. And these communities all function because of the people involved with them! They become an entity unto themselves. They have a life of their own. And these smaller communities are all part of larger communities, too – which in turn interact and grow with others. It all starts with each of us as individuals, and expands to include the entire planet.

Daily Good: Wild Mind: Reclaiming Our Original Wholeness

Our human psyches possess, as capacities, a variety of astonishing resources about which mainstream Western psychology has little to say. By uncovering and reclaiming these innate resources, shared by all of us by simple virtue of our human nature, we can more easily understand and resolve our intrapsychic and interpersonal difficulties as they arise. These resources, the four facets of the Self, or the four dimensions of our human wholeness, wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them, cultivate their powers, and integrate them into our everyday lives. There’s a facet of the Self associated with each of the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Describing the Self in this way is in keeping with traditions around the world that have mapped human nature onto the template of the four directions (and the closely related templates of the four seasons and the four times of day: sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight). { read more }

Natural Living Ideas: How To Make Air Cleansing Rosemary & Sage Smudge Sticks

Smudging is the practice of the burning of sacred herbs for spiritual cleansing and purification. It’s a ceremony that has been practiced by Native Americans for centuries.

A selection of herbs, usually white sage or cedar, is bundled with a cotton or hemp string. The bundle is then dried. Once the herbs have thoroughly dried, it’s lit and allowed to smoulder. The smoke is then fanned around an area for cleansing.

SPEAK FOR YOURSELF

“An open ear is the only believable sign of an open heart.”
— David Augsburger

We can easily get into trouble in relationships when we assume that we know what someone else is thinking or feeling. Parents, in particular, can be quick to judge what’s going on in their children.

Rather than assuming we know someone else’s experience, we could shift our perceptions into questions. Instead of saying, ‘I know you’re hurting,’ we could ask, ‘Are you feeling hurt?’ This allows us to connect with the other with no risk of misunderstandings.

“It’s always wise to raise questions about the most obvious and simple assumptions.”

“Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest.”

-Lady Bird Johnson

While computers may be filled with information, and even provide online interactions with people around the globe, there’s still no substitute for the local library. This is where we find knowledge, wisdom, comfort, and community. As much as things change, and become more high-tech, I hope that our books, and our libraries, will always be preserved. They offer a great service and easy accessibility for everyone. If you haven’t been in a while, you might want to visit the library, explore, and see what surprises you can find.

Made from ash and willow withe
Tied with thongs of willow bark
In running stream at moonset dark.
With a pentagram indighted
As the ritual fire is lighted;
Sweep ye circle, deosil,
Sweep out evil, sweep out ill,
Make the round of the ground
Where we do the Lady’s will.

Besom, besom, Lady’s broom
Sweep out darkness, sweep out doom
Rid ye Lady’s hallowed ground
Of demons, imps and Hell’s red hound;
Then set ye down on Her green earth
By running stream or Mistress’ hearth,

Daily Good: Wild Mind: Reclaiming Our Original Wholeness

Our human psyches possess, as capacities, a variety of astonishing resources about which mainstream Western psychology has little to say. By uncovering and reclaiming these innate resources, shared by all of us by simple virtue of our human nature, we can more easily understand and resolve our intrapsychic and interpersonal difficulties as they arise. These resources, the four facets of the Self, or the four dimensions of our human wholeness, wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them, cultivate their powers, and integrate them into our everyday lives. There’s a facet of the Self associated with each of the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Describing the Self in this way is in keeping with traditions around the world that have mapped human nature onto the template of the four directions (and the closely related templates of the four seasons and the four times of day: sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight). { read more }

“People had changed – or rather fridges had changed them. Mrs. Munde felt that being able to store food for longer periods had broken down the community spirit. There was no need to share now, no need to meet every day, gathering your veg or killing a few rabbits.”

Communities can form out of necessity, but also out of common interests or goals. Now we just seem to have more choices. HEALTH AND HELP

“More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones.”
— Mother Teresa

If we are prompted to ask for spiritual blessings for ourselves or others, how do we best do this?

Speaker Kimberly Herkert offers that it is best to simply ask the divine for health and help. As human beings, we are not capable of seeing the big picture for anyone’s situation. As a result, we are not able to judge what is best for anyone, including ourselves.

The Higher Power always knows best, and the general prayer for ‘health and help’ acknowledges the wisdom that exists there and our faith in divine will.

“God answers prayer in His own way, not ours.”

Conscience

“The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”

-Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird, 1960

A conscience is a very individual thing. We can’t peak inside someone else’s mind to find out just how they arrive at decisions. But we can look at our own thought process. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a book that really explores the whole concept of conscience. I’m glad that my son will be reading it in school this year, we will have some great conversations about it. I can’t help but picture Gregory Peck as Atticus. I love the way he portrayed this man who was so compelled to follow his conscience. I love the example that this character set for his children.

Inner Journey:

DO YOU GIVE TO GET?

“I have sensed a growing discontent amongst many who are on their spiritual path. A common theme appears to be — ‘I have been serving God for so long and have given up so much and it has been such a struggle — when am I going to get my reward?’”
— Wendy Munroe

It’s interesting to become aware of how we participate in the dynamic exchange of giving and receiving. When we give, do we do so whole-heartedly? Or do we do so with the ulterior motive of wanting something in return?

It’s not wise to be always looking for a deal. The universe never short-changes us. We can afford to be generous. When something of value is given, something of value must be returned.

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”

Choosing to be unhappy.
Fear of anything, especially falling in love.
Believing that karma or spiritual contracts are absolute.
Waiting for their ducks to line up before acting.
Believing in soul mates.
Attaching to unimportant details and outcomes.
Thinking they have dues to pay.
Worrying about HOW their dream will come true.
Thinking God decides who gets what.
Asking others what they should do.

We have to deal with many negative feelings, isn’t it? Furthermore, Buddhist instructors clarify that the remedy for our negative emotions is the use of the Dharma. Distinguishing what we mean by Dharma in this manner turns up crucial. Executing, or putting into training, Dharma is the thing that Buddha did.

ThoughtCo: Chrysanthemum Folklore & Magic

When autumn rolls in, most of the flowers in our gardens are dying off, but the chrysanthemum is just beginning to bloom. Found in an array of colors from whites and purples to bright yellows and reds to rustic oranges and browns, the chrysanthemum is a popular fall flower, and has a rich history of folklore and myth behind it. Although they’re primarily ornamental – and don’t have much a very flowery smell at all – they’ve been used in medicine and magic for a long time.

MNN: Don’t feel weird about saying ‘Hi’ to strangers

My son teases me when we walk in the park. When we see people walking their dogs, I always say “Hello” … to the dogs.

“Hi, buddy!” I say in a singsong voice, directing my attention to all the four-legged strangers we meet. Occasionally I’ll also look up and smile at their human companions, but I’m mostly focused on greeting their pups.

EarthSky News: Old moon and Regulus before sunrise

These upcoming mornings – September 26 and 27, 2019 – the old waning crescent moon and the star Regulus adorn the eastern sky before sunrise. Because we’re only a few days past the equinox, sunrise happens about six hours before noontime – or about six hours after midnight – everywhere around the world. In this usage, noon means midway between sunrise and sunset, and midnight means midway between sunset and sunrise

Patheos-Pagan: A Gratitude Practice For The Autumn Equinox Season

My move was only a week away and I was still saying goodbyes.
I’d given away lots of pretty things, but there was one piece left: a gauzy dress with a billowy skirt and bedazzled bodice (a very flirty princess gown). I’d enjoyed it. I would miss it.
But I knew someone who would enjoy it even more…

Inner Journey:

FORGIVENESS BRINGS JOY

“The greatest evil that can befall man is that he should come to think ill of himself.”
— Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Do you feel worthy of having joy? Do you feel you deserve it?

The first step to activating our inner joy is to eliminate the blocks to it. We can start by truly forgiving ourselves and all others. Forgiveness calls for a shift in our perception. It is easier to forgive ourselves and others when we really understand that each of us has always done the very best we knew to do at that time.

“If we don’t forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us, we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt, because guilt is isolating, while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves, to other people, and to a larger whole.”
— Joan Borysenko

The closer we get to autumn, the more we will see sales on things like caramel. This is a fun way to spruce up ordinary popcorn by covering it in caramel, nuts, and white chocolate, then sprinkling it with flaked salt. When placed in clear bags and tied in ribbon, they make excellent gifts.

“Conscience itself asserts that it is a voice of God.”

-Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)

“Conscience is God’s presence in man.”
-Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772)

If conscience is that still small voice inside our heads, where does it come from? Who put it there? Our conscience is strong, and speaks to us loudly enough that we can’t ignore it. It commands us to pay attention

Daily Tarot: The Tower

Some days something blows up and there’s nothing you can do. It has nothing to do with you, actually; you just happen to be there. While today will probably be uneventful, you may feel emotionally vulnerable and find yourself imaging one worst case scenario after another. Consider these imaginings as drills or dress rehearsals and don’t let any of this unnerve you. You’re fine and will be fine no matter what.

ThoughtCo: Brighid, the Hearth Goddess of Ireland

In Irish mythological cycles, Brighid (or Brighit), whose name is derived from the Celtic brig or “exalted one”, is the daughter of the Dagda, and therefore one of the Tuatha de Dannan. Her two sisters were also called Brighid, and were associated with healing and crafts. The three Brighids were typically treated as three aspects of a single deity, making her a classic Celtic triple goddess.

Daily Good: Giving Directions

Like most of us, you’ve probably been asked for directions at least once in your life. While men are notorious for failing to admit when they’re lost and women less so, little research has been done on how directions are imparted and the characterization of the individual giving them. “Giving directions is a form of storytelling,” says Akiko Busch. “When people advise you to take the longest, most complicated route, it is their way of prolonging the pleasure of the journey.” In this Travel and Leisure article, Busch elaborates on how this simple act is often far more intimate than we realize, relying not only on our memory, but on our internal map of the places we hold most dear. { read more }

Elephant Journal: The Undeniable Significance of Fall.

For most of my life, I have identified as a summer child.
Warm summer days, cloudless and perfect, were what I craved.

Of course, I still appreciate this. There is an air of ease and simple joy that arises during this time. School is out. Plants and animals come out to play. All around, life moves at a sweet, untethered pace like a melting popsicle, which can be either fast or slow, or both.

MNN: This plant may have made Vikings go berserk before battle

Many of their victims lived in monasteries in the British Isles, a favorite source of slaves and plunder for raiding parties.

EarthSky News: Meet Fomalhaut, the loneliest star

Tonight, look for the loneliest star. Which one is that? Many people would say the answer is Fomalhaut, a bright star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus the Southern Fish. Fomalhaut is a bright star – visible from all but far-northern latitudes – located in a region of the sky that contains only very faint stars. So it appears solitary in the night sky

Patheos-Pagan: The Witch Reborn in Autumn: Spiritual Death and the Dance of Bones

Do you hear their call? The night wandering spirits of the Witch Mother’s horde beckon me this time of year, as does she, calling me to dance with them. The spirits of the land join with the fallen leaves, celebrating the season of letting go. As the leaves release the tree, so do I cast off what binds. Finding freedom in shedding a form that no longer serves us. The Dance of Bones, where all is reduced to the soul and the entrapments of the material world removed is nigh.

Inner Journey:

WHY? WHY? WHY?

“As long as one keeps searching, the answers come.”
— Joan Baez

Asking ourselves ‘why?’ helps us delve deeply into our main motives — why we do what we do. This process helps us go deeper into our reasoning, habits and unconscious beliefs. Once we become aware of our underlying motives, we can choose to change them, if we wish.

Regularly ask yourself, ‘Why am I…?’ Listen closely for the answer that surfaces in your mind, and write it down. Now look at your answer and ask why again. Continue with this process to reach the true source of your motivation.

“Men are more accountable for their motives, than for anything else….”
— Archibald Alexander

When there is ease and simplicity in your life, it’s because earlier you learned a lot.

When there is resistance and obstacles in your life, it’s because there’s even more to learn.

And learning even more, is pretty much the main reason you’re there.

Conscience

“Let me consider this as a resolution by which I pledge myself to act in all variety of circumstances and to which I must recur often in times of carelessness and temptation – to measure my conduct by the rule of conscience.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Just as conscience is a compass, it is also a measurement devise, according to Emerson. We really know how well we are doing, we don’t need anyone’s judgment or opinion of our behavior – we have our own conscience to mark our progress. There is nothing as freeing as a clear conscience.
