Natural Living Ideas: How To Make Air Cleansing Rosemary & Sage Smudge Sticks

Smudging is the practice of the burning of sacred herbs for spiritual cleansing and purification. It’s a ceremony that has been practiced by Native Americans for centuries.

A selection of herbs, usually white sage or cedar, is bundled with a cotton or hemp string. The bundle is then dried. Once the herbs have thoroughly dried, it’s lit and allowed to smoulder. The smoke is then fanned around an area for cleansing.

Inner Journey:

GO FOR DEPTH

“Mastery does not come from dabbling. We have to be prepared to pay the price. We need to have the sustained enthusiasm that motivates us to give our best.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Our world now offers us a smorgasbord of opportunities. In the personal growth field alone, there is a myriad of books and products, all promising relief from what ails us. It’s easy to flip quickly from one program to another when something new captures our imagination.

If I long for change in my life, however, I need to do more than skim the surface. I need to make time and take time to both learn new approaches and then — most importantly — to apply what I’ve learned. If I jump around to new techniques too rapidly, I won’t benefit from any of them.

Past

“Each had his past shut in him like the leaves of a book known to him by heart; and his friends could only read the title.”

-Virginia Woolf, 1922

It is interesting to think that we each have a past that we carry with us. No one else can see it, but it has shaped who we are. What the past has taught us shapes our character and influences our behavior, and in that way lends itself to the “title” of the book that people see when they look at us. And yet we know that “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” And more importantly, we know that each of us is still busy writing our books every day, adding pages every moment!

SMILE!

“Smile, it’s free therapy.”
— Doug Horton

I’ve learned that if I put a smile on my face when I’m feeling down, my spirits will automatically lift. The body knows that a smile means happiness.

Knowing this doesn’t mean I’m always willing to do it. Many times, I have absolutely refused to cheer myself up. Isn’t that interesting!

It’s a clue that sometimes the ego positively enjoys being miserable. It can be enlightening to explore the pay-offs we get from our black moods.

“Depend upon it that if a man talks of his misfortunes there is something in them that is not disagreeable to him; for where there is nothing but pure misery there is never any recourse to the mention of it.”

Past

“It is not that I belong to the past, but that the past belongs to me.”

-Mary Antin, 1912

This is such a beautiful way to put it. We don’t want to live in the past, but we are aware that the past has helped to create the life that we live today. I think most people, given the opportunity, would not change their pasts, even if it was a horrible time to live through. Because people who have had such experiences understand that their strength and resolve, and maybe even their optimism and appreciation of life, came from getting through those challenges. Everything that we have done, all the life that we have lived up to this point, has made us the people that we are today.

Inner Journey:

VALUING THE MOMENT

“… the only time you ever have in which to learn anything or see anything or feel anything, or express any feeling or emotion, or respond to an event, or grow, or heal, is this moment, because this is the only moment any of us ever gets. You’re only here now; you’re only alive in this moment.”
— Jon Kabat-Zinn

Many people regularly squander their time. They live under the assumption that they’ll live forever. As a result, they don’t value the present as a precious opportunity that will never come again.

Others continually race against time, trying to cram too many activities into each hour, and suffering stress in the process.

In our view, we are more effective and most happy when we balance being and doing. We continually ask ourselves what’s most important to get done. And we’re learning to BE — fully present — when we do. We also regularly give ourselves permission to relax.

Make today really matter. It’s all you’ll ever have.

“Very few of us know how much we can put into life if we use it properly, wisely, and economically. Let us economize our time — lifetimes ebb away before we wake up, and that is why we do not realize the value of the immortal time God has given us.”
— Paramahansa Yogananda

Past

“What’s past is prologue.”

-Shakespeare (1574 – 1616) Antonio in The Tempest

I always love to find quotes by Shakespeare, because he says things so poetically. Here are four simple words, which strung together say so much! Prologue is background, it’s the leading-up to what is happening NOW. What is it like to be a living member of a dying community? Climate change is making this an increasingly common reality. This island is home to a hundred or so people, members, mostly, of a Native American tribe called the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw–the BCC for short. For eight generations, the people of Isle de Jean Charles thrived, eating the bounty of the land and the sea: shrimp, crawfish, fish, and oysters, as well as plants they wild-harvested and grew in gardens. The tribe was so self-sufficient that when the oil and gas companies began prospecting nearby, they were surprised to discover people. But global warming is causing their land to disappear from under their feet. Inner Journey:

LOVE YOUR SHADOWS

Each of us has characteristics we define as ‘good’ and those we define as ‘bad.’ The parts of ourselves that we continually reject want to be acknowledged and loved. Until we honour these aspects, they will continue to assert themselves. They will do whatever they can to get our attention.

What aspects of yourself do you reject?

Take a few moments to open to the parts of yourself that you do not love. See each one honestly for what it is. Explore the wounds and the motives that gave rise to its condition. Love a wounded part of yourself and it will heal.

“Strangely enough we strengthen love in ourselves when we raise into consciousness the shadow side of our lives. Conversely, when we keep negative feelings out of sight, they smother the love that seems to lie deeper and closer to the real self. This is probably why there is so much pain in not loving. The life that is not able to express the love which is so integral to it grows deformed.”

Past

“Your whole past was but a birth and a becoming.”

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944)

We know that the nature of life is to grow. And so here we are. And we couldn’t have gotten here without everything that has happened in the past. It is the same way for society as it is for individuals. Whatever has happened throughout history has had an impact on how we have grown and changed as a nation, and as a planet. We’re all connected. And the more that we grow as individuals, the greater the impact will be on our communities and our countries.

Inner Journey:

THE PAST IN THE PRESENT

“If you accept a limiting belief, then it will become a truth for you.”
— Louise Hay

Pick one aspect of your life, e.g. your health, your competence, your prosperity or relationships, and think back to when you were a child. What messages about this subject did you hear from adults at that time that are still playing on your subconscious tape recorder? Messages like: “Men can’t be trusted.” “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” “You’re not smart enough to succeed in business.”

How is your world reflecting your beliefs back to you, today?

“There are no limitations to the self except those you believe in.”

Past

“Let the past as nothing be.”

-Abraham Lincoln (1809 – 1865)

There is a wonderful saying that “The past is history, the future is a mystery, but this moment is a gift, and that is why it is called the present.” I don’t know who said that, but I smile every time I hear it. We can’t change the past – it’s water under the bridge, water over the dam, and whatever other old saying you want to apply to it! It doesn’t do us any good to dwell on our past misfortunes or mistakes, or beat ourselves up for our shortcomings. And it doesn’t serve us to live in an idyllic past, wishing for days gone by. We can’t go back. But we can go forward. We can learn from the past and make better choices for ourselves in the present, which will create a more promising future.

Inner Journey:

EXPLORE WITH QUESTIONS

“The word ‘question’ is derived from the Latin ‘quarrier’ (to seek) which is also the root of ‘quest.’ A creative life is a continued quest, and good questions can be very useful guides. Most useful are open-ended questions; they allow for fresh unanticipated answers to reveal themselves.”
— Source Unknown

Questions hold the power to draw out answers that surprise us. If we are on an inner journey to greater self-knowledge, we must seek to understand unfamiliar parts of ourselves. The most enlightening answers are released by our subconscious minds or by our intuition. Use questions frequently to go exploring.

Try these out:
•What qualities do you find most attractive in others? How do you exhibit those same qualities?
•What is your greatest fear? Why do you fear that?
•What message is your body trying to get through to you?

“If we would have new knowledge, we must get a whole world of new questions.”

“Silence is one of the great arts of conversation.”

-Hannah More (1777)

One way we can tell that we are really close to someone, really comfortable with that person, is if we can just sit in silence together. So often we feel the need to fill those “awkward pauses” with idle chatter. But with some people, we’re completely comfortable just sitting in silence. Sometimes more can be said in silence than can ever be said with words.

Conversation is active. It’s lively, it stretches our minds and imaginations! We are on this planet to learn from one another, and we do that by talking to each other, by conversing with each other! What good is reading books by the great philosophers, if you keep all this newfound wisdom and insight to yourself? It is meant to be shared, and discussed, and passed around the table for others to partake and add to the mix.

Coffey Talk: Abracadabra!

Abracadabra is an ancient word used by magicians when they are ready to make something magical happen. It’s often accompanied by a swirl of the magic wand and followed by the wave of a scarf to reveal the magic trick. The origin of this word “abracadabra” is thought to be from the Aramaic language. Abra means “to create” and “cadabra” means “as I say.” So the parts put together translates to “I create as I say.”
Back in the Roman times doctors treated malaria sufferers with an amulet inscribed with the word “abracadabra” written in the form of a triangle. This was said to diminish the hold that the disease had over the patient. Over the years this magical word has had various uses, as it can be found on amulets in various cultures. Today the word is commonly used as an incantation by stage magicians.
In the “Harry Potter” series the expression “Avada Kedavra” is used as a spell known as the “Killing Curse.” Author J.K. Rowling said of the Curse’s etymology: “It is an ancient spell in Aramaic, and it is the original abracadabra, which means “let the thing be destroyed.” Originally, it was used to cure illness…”
Magic is all around us, whether we use the words or not. But sometimes using these “magic words” helps to remind us of the power we have, and how we can harness it. Think about how you can create as you say. Set your intention, put in the effort, and watch magic happen!

APPRECIATION

“You can never get to peace and inner security without first acknowledging all of the good things in your life. If you’re forever wanting and longing for more without first appreciating things the way they are, you’llstay in discord.”
— Doc Childre and Howard Martin

Develop an attitude of gratitude. We discover a sense of wholeness as we appreciate both the small and big things in our lives. And it really helps to remember to appreciate ourselves. Appreciation is more than just acceptance — it’s respect and admiration. Let go of criticism and self-abuse.

“Generally, appreciation means some blend of thankfulness, admiration, approval, and gratitude. In the financial world, something that ‘appreciates’ grows in value. With the power tool of appreciation, you get the benefit of both perspectives: as you learn to be consistently thankful and approving, your life will grow in value.”

Conversation

“Must we always talk for victory, and never once for truth, for comfort, and joy?”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Conversation is a way for us to connect with people. And yet, how often do we feel like we need to impress someone, or demonstrate somehow that we have important opinions? If we could just drop that, and think more about connecting through Truth, about sharing ourselves rather than our “stuff” – then some meaningful conversation can take place. And we can experience that comfort and joy that leads to real friendship.

Daily Tarot: The High Priestess

Let intuition be your guide today and you won’t go too far wrong. If something doesn’t need to be done or delivered instantly, take your time and let events, situations, and people claim the time and attention they seem to want. Things want to sort themselves out for you, in the best ways. Don’t introduce complications. Be decisive when necessary but otherwise step up, too, and be pleasantly surprised.

EarthSky News: Come to know the Pleiades, or 7 Sisters

Tonight, look for the tiny, misty dipper of stars known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. November is the month of the Pleiades star cluster. On these November nights, the Pleiades cluster shines from nightfall until dawn. It’s low in the east at nightfall, high overhead around midnight and low in the west before dawn. Locate it by the bright star Aldebaran this evening, or any evening soon.

Inner Journey:

A HOT TUB FOR THE MIND

“Imagine a hot tub for the mind. That is what meditation is; it can bathe your mind in relaxing thoughts.”
— Eknath Easwaran

With today’s fast pace of life, too many of us don’t have any sense of how it feels to be free of stress. It’s difficult to relax if we have physical pain or irritation, strong negative emotions or scattered, worrisome thoughts.

The practice of meditation helps us find the peace within that is so elusive in our outer world.

“Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths, or the turning inwards in prayer for five short minutes.”
— Etty Hillesum

Daily Tarot: Temperance

Instinct and impulsive action will cause more trouble than they can solve today, so spend more time reasoning things out and being careful about what you say and do. Asking questions is a good idea. It will get you information you need, and show how thorough, bright, and capable you are. It might take a bit longer, but it will save time and effort in the end.
