ThoughtCo: The Green Man, Spirit of the Forest

For our ancient ancestors, many spirits and deities were associated with nature, wildlife, and plant growth. After all, if you had just spent the winter starving and freezing, when spring arrived it was certainly time to give thanks to whatever spirits watched over your tribe. The spring season, particularly around Beltane, is typically tied to a number of pre-Christian nature spirits. Many of these are similar in origin and characteristics, but tend to vary based on region and language. In English folklore, few characters stand out as much–or are as recognizable–as the Green Man

When we don’t notice the green all around us, it’s bad for the planet.

Imagine taking a walk in the woods and seeing a deer or a rabbit. You’ll no doubt remember the encounter — it might even be the highlight of your outdoor adventure.
But what about all the plants, trees and flowers you passed while hiking? There’s a good chance you paid little attention to the greenery on your path

EarthSky News: Young moon, Mars after sunset May 6-8

These next several evenings – May 6, 7 and 8, 2019 – find an unobstructed horizon in the direction of sunset, and watch for the young moon and the planet Mars to pop out in your western sky as evening twilight gives way to darkness. Be sure to look for the moon rather soon after sunset on May 6 because the lunar crescent will be quite thin and may set before nightfall (depending on where you live worldwide).

Patheos-Pagan: Awesome Moments are Magick

The definition of magick is a tricky one. It is slippery and misty. It is something that is elusive and undulating. Trying to define it is like trying to hold a fistful of sand. You almost get it, but it tends to slip right through your fingers. One of my favorite definitions of magick comes from Dion Fortune said: “magic is the art of changing consciousness at will”.

Learning

“What we learn to do, we learn by doing.”

-Aristotle (384-322 B.C.)

There’s a difference between theory and practice. We may know how to meditate – all the technical points and benefits of meditation that we hear so much about. But until we actually meditate ourselves, we haven’t really learned anything about it! On a recent episode of the TV comedy “Frasier,” Frasier and his brother were trying to learn how to ride a bike by reading a book. Now we know how silly that is! And yet, that’s the same kind of thing we often do in our spiritual practices. We read about prayer, and chanting, and mantras – but to really “get it” we’ve got to do it!

Inner Journey:

FIND PEACE INSIDE

“All spiritual disciplines are done with a view to still the mind. The perfectly still mind is universal spirit.”
— Swami Ramdas

Getting into the habit of meditating, praying and/or resting daily helps us pull back from our preoccupation with the material world. In silence and solitude, we have an opportunity to pay attention to what’s happening inside rather than outside.

When we do this consistently, we learn to relax and to quiet and detach from our mental chatter and our turbulent emotions. As we begin to witness ourselves in personality, we also begin to experience our soul.

“Meditation may require a lifetime to master, but it will have been a lifetime well spent.” If you want to judge your progress, ask yourself these questions: Am I more loving? Is my judgment sounder? Do I have more energy? Can my mind remain calm under provocation? Am I free from the conditioning of anger, fear, and greed? Spiritual awareness reveals itself as eloquently in character development and selfless action as in mystical states.”

Understanding

“Much learning does not teach understanding.”

-Heraclitus (540?- 480?)

Where do we find understanding? It doesn’t just come from education. It isn’t just in books. How easy that would be it if were so! Understanding is not something that is generated in our minds. It starts with our mind, but whatever it is becomes understood when it finds its way into our heart. We understand because we can relate, we can identify, we can see that we are not separate from that which we seek to understand.

The Beltane bonfires were lit as a symbol of the return of the sun for the summer half of the year. Nine sacred woods were used to start the fires and each wood has its own magickal properties. The names of the wood to be used appears in the long versions of the Witches Rede, while the shorter versions contain the first sentence.

“Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow.
Birch wood in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows.
Oak in the forest, towers with might in the fire it brings the God’s insight.
Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower.
Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland.
Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye.
Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning- adds its strength to the bright fire burning.
White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility.
Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine.
Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen.
But – Elder is the Lady’s tree burn it not or cursed you’ll be.”

Marry in May, you’ll rue the day.
It is considered very bad luck to get married in May; perhaps because it is considered by some to be the wedding month of the God and Goddess and it would be very rude to upstage them.
Wash a blanket in May, you’ll wash a dear one away
It is bad luck to wash your blankets in May or to buy a new broom.
According to one superstition, children born this month will be sickly all their lives and cats born this month won’t catch mice, but might bring snakes into the house.

A cold May is kindly and fills the barn finely.

OPEN TO THE NEW

“All the people we call ‘geniuses’ are men and women who somehow escaped having to put that curious, wondering child in themselves to sleep.”
— Barbara Sher

How willing are you to learn something new?
How open are you to new perspectives?

Only when we’re open can we really hear what’s being said or really see what’s happening or really experience the moment.

Openness demands that we be willing to move to places we’ve never been before. It asks us to continually challenge the foundations of our belief systems so we can test out new ideas. And to do that, we need to accept insecurity.

Understanding

“In what we really understand, we reason but little.”

-William Hazlitt (1778-1830)

True understanding is knowingness. We don’t have to be able to put it into words, we just know. In our heart, in our mind, in our very being, some things just ARE, and we understand. It’s kind of like how we can feel when someone loves us. We know it without that person having to say it. We don’t have to think about it and analyze the situation, there is just this understanding that is there. That same understanding, that same knowingness, comes with the presence of Spirit, omnipotent and omnipresent.

TWO VIEWS

“… no matter what our difficulties may be, we recognize that there is a deep untroubled stream flowing below all surface troubles and that we are of one substance with that stream. The soul knows no difficulties.”

Masters teach that we can experience two completely different states of reality at the same time — from the personality and from the soul.

Author Pema Chödron talks about being hungry, cold and tired but at that same time deeply content. Ram Dass speaks of how the emotional heart can be breaking while we recognize that all is unfolding perfectly.

Allowing our soul to be present with the discomforts of the personality shifts our experience of the discomforts.

Understanding

“Sometimes it proves the highest understanding not to understand.”

-Baltasar Gracian (1601-1658)

Some things seem beyond our understanding. Certain algebraic formulas, for example – or the mentality of terrorists. This is a complicated world we live in. And we may not understand all of it. But we can expand our faith to accept what understanding we do have, and to build on that. We can take what we know, and learn and grow from here.

Spirit Library: Claim Your Truth Now

This message is a lovely channel from Archangel Uriel.

It is time to claim your truth, to be in your own light and energy and the truth of your being. This is not an easy task because you have done this before, usually with terrible consequences. Claiming your truth means that you stand in your own light, no matter what others may feel or think about it or how they respond to you. The opposite of your truth is not a lie, it is denial and you must now choose to live in truth or to live in denial, to stand in the bright center of your light or in theits shadowy edges

EarthSky News: Moon and Venus grace eastern morning sky

Late April and early May 2019 present the moon and the planet Venus adorning the eastern sky before sunrise. From most places worldwide, these two brilliant worlds can be viewed at dawn if you’re blessed with clear skies and an unobstructed horizon. After all, the moon and Venus rank as the 2nd-brightest and 3rd-brightest celestial bodies, respectively, after the sun. Unfortunately for far-northern latitudes, like Alaska, viewing the moon and Venus will be extremely difficult because the moon and Venus rise about the same time as the sun at those far northern latitudes

ThoughtCo: The Magic of Crows and Ravens

Although crows and ravens are part of the same family (Corvus), they’re not exactly the same bird. Typically, ravens are quite a bit bigger than crows, and they tend to be a bit shaggier looking. The raven actually has more in common with hawks and other predatory birds than the standard, smaller-sized crow. In addition, although both birds have an impressive repertoire of calls and noises they make, the raven’s call is usually a bit deeper and more guttural sounding than that of the crow.

FORGIVE THE HURTS

“Forgiveness will never fail to free you.”
— Jerrold Mundis

How do we forgive when we’re angry and hurt?

As a first step, we can be willing to truly feel our anger and hurt. Honouring our feelings by being fully present with them helps to release the feelings themselves.

And it helps to remember that people only hurt others when they themselves are in pain. When we can recognize the other person’s suffering, our heart can open in compassion. We can also remember that at some time or another, we too have hurt someone through our own unskilful action.

Only love can heal the rifts caused by a hurtful deed. Forgiveness holds immense power because it mends separation. It moves us towards the unity and love that lie at the core of our being. It is a fundamental part of the healing process.

Effort

“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor.”

-Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

Yes! This is totally encouraging! In the choices that we make, we have the ability to change, and improve our lives! Where are we choosing to put our efforts? What endeavors have we chosen to pursue? I found another quote said: “Rowing harder doesn’t help if the boat is headed in the wrong direction.” (Kenichi Ohmae, 1989) If we happen to re-evaluate and decide that this particular endeavor has not rewarded our efforts in some way, we can choose again, change direction! And we take with us our experiences and newfound knowledge.

One of my very favorite books of all time is “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” by Richard Bach. This book was first published in 1970, and it has held up to the test of time, it is a true classic. If you’ve never experienced this beautiful story, it is a must-have for your home library. If you’ve read it before, read it again.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve read it, and gotten something more out of it each time. I have such an affinity for seagulls because of this wonderful little book! Jonathan is an example for each of us, to follow our dreams, to strive to do better, to be true to ourselves. The book includes amazing photography by Russell Munson.

While working on a talk about this book I discovered that Richard Bach recently found his original last chapter, which was never published! He has now added it to the “Complete Edition” version of the book.

I plunder my cupboards for my magical works so much that my “magical spice rack” has become a cliche. It’s a cliche for a good reason, though. My spice rack and tea cabinet always have the perfect ingredients for my spellwork. Do you need a pinch of heat in your magic? Sprinkle in some cayenne pepper. Need some more comforting aspects in your spell? Grab a lavender tea bag, and rip that baby open.

A Note from the Universe

Of course the most deceptive of all illusions is very likely space.

You know, that thing between “here” and “there” that would have you see yourself alone, instead of as the bridge between them.

That medium between you and the rest of the world that disguises your role in creating it.

You know, that veil through which the physical senses must explore your chiseled secrets.

See? Aliens are the least of your worries…

Effort

“You can’t always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes,
You just might find
You get what you need.”

-Mick Jagger and Keith Richards song, 1969

It usually takes something to motivate us to make that effort. It’s like we begin with the end in mind – that’s our goal, what we are working towards. But along the way, things might change. We certainly change and grow from the experience – and maybe that’s just what we really need. We can find some of the most amazing spiritual messages in our own music. Are we listening?

Associate professor Sara Konrath from Indiana University has been tracking a trend, or a critical shift, whereby younger generations do not feel it’s their responsibility to “see the world from someone else’s perspective.”

THE 4 D’S OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH

“Promise Yourself … to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. …To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.”
— Drawn from the Optimist Creed of the Optimist International Club

Reflect on this pathway for meaningful growth:

DISCIPLINE – To create change in our lives, we need to consistently focus on what we want.

DETACHMENT – Practice the art of detached observation. Let go of automatic defenses and patterns.

DISCERNMENT – Seek to discern the lower from the higher. What is self-serving and what is soul-inspired? Discernment carries no judgment. There are no goods and bads. Remain as a detached witness.

DHARMA “This is an East Indian word meaning “living your unique purpose.” How do you find meaning and fulfillment in ways that are natural to you? How do you best serve and contribute to the world?

“If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears.”

Today’s Recipe: DIY Tea Astringent

Astringents are used to firm and tone the skin. They constrict the pores and create a protective layer of firm tissue to fight against natural elements. However, some astringents can be harsh due to their alcohol content, thus, drying the skin. So why not create your own astringent at home? Today’s recipe uses non-drying ingredients — witch hazel, lemon juice and, don’t be surprised – tea!

“Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory.”

-Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948)

Full effort is mindfulness. It’s being present in the moment, concentrating on the task at hand and not on the results. When we’re in that space where we’re putting in effort, doing our best, we lose track of time and experience the now. That’s a victory!
