Tetraktys: Communing With Nature – A Guide For Modern Pagans

Modern paganism often comes with an appreciation of nature. Indeed, if you identify as being part of any Neopagan religion, there is a good chance that it’s one in which the core tenets have everything to do with nature and that you consider nature as divine in one way or another. If that’s the case, then communing with nature should be part of your spiritual practices, as you would be essentially communing with the divine itself in the process. This article will give you a few tips and a few of my thoughts about it

Inner Journey:

THE PAST IN THE PRESENT

“If you accept a limiting belief, then it will become a truth for you.”
— Louise Hay

Pick one aspect of your life, e.g. your health, your competence, your prosperity or relationships, and think back to when you were a child. What messages about this subject did you hear from adults at that time that are still playing on your subconscioustape recorder? Messages like: “Men can’t be trusted.” “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” “You’re not smart enough to succeed in business.”

How is your world reflecting your beliefs back to you, today?

Service

“In the time we have it is surely our duty to do all the good we can to all the people we can in all the ways we can.”

-William Barclay
I believe that it is our duty to serve. I also believe that it is our nature to serve. We are here for each other, we are here to help each other. Many times, I think it is easier for us to help someone else than to ask for help for ourselves. But when we need help, we absolutely should reach out for it. When we need help, we are providing another person with the opportunity to serve, and this is truly a blessing.

MBG: This Common Strategy For Handling Anxiety Actually Makes It Worse

Anxiety is primarily a mental state, meaning that when we’re in anxiety, we’re cut off from our bodies. Inner Journey:

ONE STEP AT A TIME

“What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.”
— Antoine De Saint-Exupery

Does the prospect of changing and growing seem monumental to you? Just too much to tackle?

Then consider this approach. Take a simple step of affirming your openness to experience more or something new. Or a different first step might be to let go of judgment by embracing the neutral. Begin to see the people, activities and things around you asneither good nor bad.

A journey is made of many small steps. Don’t focus on a far-off destination if you’re not clear how to get there. Build a foundation that is solid for you. We get to new places one step at a time.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

There is so much truth in this… I’ve been getting Christmas catalogs in the mail since August! Our society has gotten so retail oriented, so marketing savvy, that we’re always months ahead of ourselves. Whether it’s holiday sales, or movie previews, or upcoming specials, we’ve been trained to think ahead or be left behind. So we can’t really enjoy the moment we’re in because we’re too busy planning for the time that’s yet to come. How sad. But we can do something about it! Resolve to live in the now. MBG: A Ritual For Boosting Your Self-Esteem As Soon As You Get Out Of Bed

Most of us start the day by looking in the mirror and judging (negatively) our appearance. This literally means our first interaction with anything or anyone is negative. Rather than starting our days by undermining ourselves, we should spend our first moments affirming our worth. In this short video, Kathryn Budig guides us through an easy trick for getting inspired and energized in the first five minutes of your morning.

Inner Journey: THE FIRST STEP TO FORGIVENESS

“To get to forgiveness, we first have to work through the painful experiences that require it.”
— Christiane Northrup

To forgive, we do not have to say that whatever happened was okay. In fact, before we can forgive, we need to allow ourselves to really feel the pain of the experience. If we don’t fully acknowledge our hurts, we will continue to carry them subconsciouslyand they will drain our energy.

To forgive, we need to decide that we won’t allow the memories of the event to poison us any longer. We’re ready to heal this wound from the past and open to a fresh new beginning.

The blessing is that when we’re really ready to experience our pain and we open to it, it usually fades away. By honouring our pain, we release it.

“We must let ourselves feel all the painful destruction we want to forgive rather than swallow it in denial. If we do not face it, we cannot choose to forgive it.”
— Kenneth McNoll

I made these bread for a friend who is on a strict keto diet that’s to help with a certain ailment. The flour that you’d usually find in this bread has been replaced with Parmesan cheese, and you’d almost never know it. For only having 4 ingredients, this bread is chewy, moist, and crazy delicious! You can up the heat factor by adding more jalapeno, but I kept it on a medium-heat level here.

Daily Good: To Keep Company With Oneself

Philosophy student Jennifer Stitt writes a thoughtful essay asking whether we would become lonely in solitude or find new depths? Philosophers have long distinguished between solitude and loneliness. Emerson celebrated the former, in which “nature may speak to the imagination, as she never does in company.” Socrates celebrated the soundless dialogue “which the soul holds with herself.” And in the 20th century, Hannah Arendt muses, “Thinking, existentially speaking, is a solitary but not a lonely business,” reminding us that the self “is the only one from whom you can never get away – except by ceasing to think.” { read more }

FEARS OF MONEY

“We are all powerless as children, and money looms so powerfully … we don’t grow up to claim our financial power until we look money directly in the eye, face our fears, and claim that power back.”
— Suze Orman

How does money scare you?

In your journal, write down your greatest fears around money, and see what comes up. If emotions surface, as they undoubtedly will, let them come. Really feel your feelings, without judgment. They’ll give you valuable information.

“In all realms of life it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power, and fulfill your potential; it’s no different in the financial realm. In a buy-now, consume-now culture like ours, it takes courage to make the decisions today that may make us rich tomorrow. It takes courage to face up to the facts of old age and mortality and to prepare for them. It also takes courage to live generously, regardless of your financial state of affairs. …It takes courage to ask for what you want. And it takes courage to live honestly, wisely, true to yourself …and true to your desire for more.”

Awareness

“I break up through the skin of awareness a thousand times a day, as dolphins burst through seas, and dive again, and rise, and dive.”

-Annie Dillard, An American Childhood (1987)

How many of our waking hours do we spend actually “aware?” This is a beautiful analogy, I can just picture the dolphins playing, experiencing the freedom and joy that is theirs with every magnificent dive into the beautiful ocean. TWO VIEWS

“… no matter what our difficulties may be, we recognize that there is a deep untroubled stream flowing below all surface troubles and that we are of one substance with that stream. The soul knows no difficulties.”
— James Thornton

Masters teach that we can experience two completely different states of reality at the same time — from the personality and from the soul.

Author Pema Chödron talks about being hungry, cold and tired but at that same time deeply content. Ram Dass speaks of how the emotional heart can be breaking while we recognize that all is unfolding perfectly.

Allowing our soul to be present with the discomforts of the personality shifts our experience of the discomforts.

“True self simply refers to the aspect of our being that is completely aware of its expanded nature no matter what we may be experiencing in our lives.”

Reality

“Reality has changed chameleon-like before my eyes so many times that I have learned, or am learning, to trust almost anything except what appears to be so.”

-Maya Angelou

Appearances change. Nothing in this exterior world stays the same. Have you ever gone to visit a place, only to return several years later and not even recognize it? Buildings go up and down, tenants move in and out, trees grow, signs change. People change, too. We all start out as babies, and our features mature as we age. Our hairstyles and clothes change with the trends. But what stays the same? Spirit. We can trust that love never goes out of style, and never moves away.

Inner Journey:

THREE LEVELS OF PROSPERITY

“Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.”
— Woody Allen

To become more prosperous, we need to change on at least two levels. First, we must ensure our financial affairs are in order. We need an income that at least covers our expenses. And we need a foundation of habits, tools and skills so we achieve some financial stability in our day-to-day experience.

Second, we must become aware of the beliefs we hold around money and prosperity. If we unconsciously believe we are lacking in some way, then no matter what we do, we will unconsciously sabotage our own efforts to improve our finances.

And third, it’s helpful to understand the spiritual principles that govern our level of abundance. Once we know those principles, we can work effectively within them to attract abundance to us.

“If you’re prosperous in soul, you’ll be prosperous in whole.”

“Patience is not passive: on the contrary it is active; it is concentrated strength.”

-Edward George Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873) English novelist

Look at people who are patient. Along with patience comes a kind of calm, a deep faith, a beautiful presence. Compared with people who are impatient – who seem stressed out, angry, and hurried. Who has more strength? The patient person can do anything because that person recognizes his or her connection with the Universe. Patience can move mountains!

Beliefnet: 10 Reasons to Make Gratitude Lists
Read about reasons why it’s important to remember and acknowledge the blessings in your life.

One of my spiritual practices is to make regular gratitude lists. I aim for every day. Lately I’ve gotten a couple of notes, both from strangers and friends, saying this jotting down of thanks helps them. It’s certainly not news–people have been counting their blessings since the first breath, I imagine. But here are some reasons you might want to add it to your handful of spiritual supplements.

EarthSky News: Moon near Jupiter, plus a Venus milestone

On August 17, 2018, a glance up into the evening sky will show you a bright planet near the moon. That planet is Jupiter, biggest world in our solar system by far (more massive than all the other planets combined). The moon is now in the process of passing all four planets in the evening sky, starting with Venus earlier this week.

Patheos-Pagan: Toxic Positivity Culture: Why Pagans, Polytheists, & Occultists Should Guard Against It

“You attract what you are.”
“Everything happens for a reason.”
I’ve seen a variety of these sorts of phrases. They’re typically found in the New Age and LoA (Law of Attraction) communities, but it’s not unusual for pagans, polytheists, and occultists to fall under the trap of this type of thinking. A lot of this tends to stem from the notion that intent is everything (or at the very least the main thing) which you need in magic, therefore if you “just think positively” your magic won’t fail.

Inner Journey:

HEAL THE PAST

“What you bring forth out of yourself from the inside will save you. What you do not bring forth out of yourself from the inside will destroy you.”
— Gospel of Thomas

We can transform painful memories by re-imagining them from the soul’s perspective of love and meaning.

Andrew Schneider says that all experiences have the purpose of serving the soul. An experience in the past blocked us because our fear at the time distorted our perception of what happened. To transform this limiting experience, we must bring what was thenunconscious into the soul’s realm through consciousness.

We can do this by following these steps:
1.RECALL the past experience that might inhibit us.
2.OWN the experience (no judgment, blame, etc.).
3.TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for it and the consequences (i.e., the experience was determined by my subjective perception of what occurred, dictated by my lack of wholeness — specifically my fears).
4.GIVE IT MEANING (the soul was attempting to gain some kind of mastery or skill, but we didn’t know that at the time).
5.RE-IMAGINE it from the perspective of soul consciousness (showing its higher purpose).

“Letting go of our suffering is the hardest work we will ever do. It is also the most fruitful. To heal means to meet ourselves in a new way — in the newness of each moment where all is possible and nothing is limitedto the old.”
— Stephen Levine

A Note from the Universe

An earth changing idea, the clutch comeback, or the deal of a lifetime. Finding the frog before he turns into a prince, Cinderella only days before the ball, or getting in on a ground floor opportunity, at the ground floor.

These are the result of:

A. Astute observations, keen intellects, and lengthy preparations?

OR

B. Someone starting an adventure with a desired-end clearly in mind, enabling me to work “backwards” from the vision impressed upon the unseen, to the facts and circumstances of their life today; pushing and squeezing, nipping and tucking, deducing and maneuvering all of their evolving circumstances so that everything is tied together in a series of accidents, coincidences, and surprises that appear so uncanny, people everywhere are utterly stupefied by their luck?

(Wink. Wink. Rhymes with “me”).

Daily Good: Eager: The Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter

A beaver is a change agent. They build a dam, create a pond, then over the course of years, the pond fills in, becomes a wetland, wet meadow and the cycle starts again. Humans like things static, which is one reason beavers and humans have not gotten along. We have fundamentally different visions of how the landscape is supposed to work. The consequences have been the decimation of the beaver population resulting in a profound loss of habitat. In his book, Eager, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb explores the deleterious effects removing these essential animals has had and how bringing them back can help us solve all sorts of problems. His book not only opens the reader to seeing beavers as industrious, brilliant engineers worthy of endless observation, but is a gateway into a love, devotion and connection with nature. { read more }

Patheos-Pagan: Making Magick with Resistance

I was in a funk last week. I don’t remember why. Maybe I’d read too many articles about climate change. Maybe I’d heard “45” talk too much that day. Maybe I’d simply spent too much time on Facebook. I’m part of the Resistance–I think? Are we even still calling it that? I was feeling much more hopeless than #resist-full. I thought if I ran errands I’d feel accomplished and therefore, better.

Inner Journey:

FORGIVE THE HURTS

“Forgiveness will never fail to free you.”
— Jerrold Mundis

How do we forgive when we’re angry and hurt?

As a first step, we can be willing to truly feel our anger and hurt. Honouring our feelings by being fully present with them helps to release the feelings themselves.

And it helps to remember that people only hurt others when they themselves are in pain. When we can recognize the other person’s suffering, our heart can open in compassion. We can also remember that at some time or another, we too have hurt someone throughour own unskilful action.

Only love can heal the rifts caused by a hurtful deed. Forgiveness holds immense power because it mends separation. It moves us towards the unity and love that lie at the core of our being. It is a fundamental part of the healing process.

“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.”
— Paul Boese

“God has a big eraser.”

Today’s Recipe: Blooming French Strawberry Tart

Many of my family members live in France. One thing I look forward to having every time I visit is the classic French fruit tart. It’s got a delicate crust topped with a custardy pastry cream (crème pâtissière), with fruit arranged beautifully on top to resemble a blooming flower. I finally learned how to make it myself so I don’t have to long for it between visits. It’s worth the effort, and I hope you give it a try!

Success

“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

-John Wooden

With this definition, it doesn’t matter what industry you work in, or how much money you make. It doesn’t matter where you grew up or who you know. This says that success is all a matter of our own efforts, and how we see how we are doing. And it leaves room to say that we are “becoming” – which is great, because we are all changing, and growing, and succeeding every day, every minute!
