Spirituality & Health: Pilgrimage as Presence

BY ANTONIA MALCHIK

The physical act of walking brings us more fully back into the present. Author Antonia Malchik shares, “Walking is what we turn to when we wish to show our devotion to our gods, and how we move when the precariousness of our precious human existence is laid bare.”

Daily Tarot: The Moon

You may be dwelling on your weakness or discomfort, and those things may be real enough, but take heart and know that these things are also temporary and are not going to last much longer. You underestimate or overlook your great powers of recovery and self-healing. You have too much love of life to be kept down for long. Give yourself a break and relax a bit.

Daily Good: Humanity’s Path to a Flourishing Future

“I discovered that what makes humans unique is that we–to a greater extent than any other species–have what I call a ‘patterning instinct:’ we are driven to pattern meaning into our world. That drive is what led humans to develop language, myth, and culture. It enabled us to invent tools and develop science, giving us tremendous benefits but also putting us on a collision course with the natural world.” Jeremy Lent, author of “The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity’s Search for Meaning” shares more

Elephant Journal: Why I’m Celebrating Life & Friendship by the Light of May’s Full Flower Moon.

Throughout history, the naming of full moons has been an honored tradition, often signifying the connection of the moon to the seasons.
As we know, April showers bring May flowers, so it is no wonder that the May full moon is aptly called a “Full Flower Moon.” The Full Flower Moon was seen as a symbol of increased fertility signifying to the ancient tribes that now was a safe time to bear children and plant crops as the weather was warming.

Away With The Witch: Never not broken? There’s a goddess for that.

I struggle with the illusion of completeness.
It gives false expectations and sets you up to fail because life is a constant ebb and flow. We never truly ‘have it all’ because we’re all broken.
And there’s a Goddess for that: the Hindu goddess Akhilandeshvari is the Goddess of Never Not Broken. I’ll come to her in a moment.

Sun phases for magic
Just like the moon, the sun has phases which can be used to tie in with your magical workings to add an extra boost of power. The sun measures time, where it sits in the sky denotes what time of the day it is, and a sun dial would be quite useless without the sun to cast a shadow! I also think that point between night and day and vice versa, that moment of hand over is quite special.

Inner Journey:

THE FIRST STEP TO FORGIVENESS

“To get to forgiveness, we first have to work through the painful experiences that require it.”
— Christiane Northrup

To forgive, we do not have to say that whatever happened was okay. In fact, before we can forgive, we need to allow ourselves to really feel the pain of the experience. If we don’t fully acknowledge our hurts, we will continue to carry them subconsciously and they will drain our energy.

To forgive, we need to decide that we won’t allow the memories of the event to poison us any longer. We’re ready to heal this wound from the past and open to a fresh new beginning.

The blessing is that when we’re really ready to experience our pain and we open to it, it usually fades away. By honouring our pain, we release it.

“We must let ourselves feel all the painful destruction we want to forgive rather than swallow it in denial. If we do not face it, we cannot choose to forgive it.”
— Kenneth McNoll

She is depicted as a beautiful golden goddess, with wings (for flight), sandals, a staff, and a tunic. There is often much art, such as vases and murals, shown of her because she is worshiped and very beautiful. She was also seen briefly in Homer’s Legacies.

Inner Journey:

FORGIVE THE HURTS

“Forgiveness will never fail to free you.”
— Jerrold Mundis

How do we forgive when we’re angry and hurt?

As a first step, we can be willing to truly feel our anger and hurt. Honouring our feelings by being fully present with them helps to release the feelings themselves.

And it helps to remember that people only hurt others when they themselves are in pain. When we can recognize the other person’s suffering, our heart can open in compassion. We can also remember that at some time or another, we too have hurt someone through our own unskilful action.

Only love can heal the rifts caused by a hurtful deed. Forgiveness holds immense power because it mends separation. It moves us towards the unity and love that lie at the core of our being. It is a fundamental part of the healing process.

“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.”

Effort

“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor.”

-Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

Yes! This is totally encouraging! In the choices that we make, we have the ability to change, and improve our lives! Where are we choosing to put our efforts? What endeavors have we chosen to pursue? I found another quote said: “Rowing harder doesn’t help if the boat is headed in the wrong direction.” (Kenichi Ohmae, 1989) If we happen to re-evaluate and decide that this particular endeavor has not rewarded our efforts in some way, we can choose again, change direction! And we take with us our experiences and newfound knowledge.

ACCEPT CHANGE

“We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning; for what in the morning was true will in evening become a lie.”
— C.G. Jung

Life continually evolves. We’re always moving into new experiences, new possibilities. This constant change unsettles the personality, which finds security in stability. But with life always in flux, that security is an illusion. We experience pain by trying to hold on to things that are not solid.

Life becomes joyful when we can open to the constant flow and ride freely with it. This requires us to let go of the need to control. We need to learn to trust.

“Can it then be that what we call the ‘self’ is fluid and elastic? It evolves, strikes a different balance with every new breath.”
— Wayne Muller

THE FACE IN THE MIRROR

“Our inability to see beauty doesn’t suggest in the slightest that beauty is not there. Rather, it suggests that we are not looking carefully enough or with broad enough perspective to see the beauty.”

Who are you? You can gaze at your reflection in a mirror but you’re not likely to see your true likeness. You are beautiful, unique, perfect. Do you see that?

Think of the odds, think of what it took to get us here, in this particular body, at this particular time. So many events had to occur exactly the way that they did for us to exist right now. What if your mother hadn’t met your father? The “what ifs” are endless! But somehow everything fell into place miraculously to create this life that you’re living. Honey bees have been around for millions of years, and contribute to about one third of the food we eat worldwide. But they are facing enormous challenges, just like the rest of us on the rapidly changing planet we call home. In 2017, bee keepers in the United States lost 40% of their colonies. However, backyard beekeeping is something simple anyone can do. In the Sufi tradition, we begin community gatherings with the Invocation.
Standing hand in hand, speaking into the space in unison brings us together and reminds us why we gather. In the second line of the Invocation, we invoke the qualities of love, harmony, and beauty. I feel a tingle up my spine and a resonance within my heart hearing the power behind the words as the group speaks as one.

EarthSky News: Wayward moon receding from Earth

From 1969 to 1972, Apollo astronauts left laser reflectors on the moon’s surface, enabling astronomers to measure the moon’s distance from Earth with great accuracy. Although the moon’s distance from Earth varies each month because of its eccentric orbit, the moon’s mean distance from Earth is nonetheless increasing at the rate of about 3.8 centimeters (1.5 inches) per year. That’s about the rate that fingernails grow

Patheos-Pagan: Welcoming The Witches’ New Year With The Moon

There’s lots of talk about Samhain being the Witches’ New Year, but little is known about the origins of this association. The evidence that annual rents were paid on this day shows us that there was some acknowledgement that this was the beginning of a new year, but that is a terribly weak connection to anything witchy.

Inner Journey:

OPEN TO TRUST

“When I grip the wheel too tight, I find I lose control.”
— Steve Rapson

WE SEEK TO CONTROL OUR LIVES WHEN WE DO NOT TRUST, WHEN WE DO NOT LOVE. Our ego, perceiving itself to be vulnerable and insecure, uses control in an effort to protect itself.

At the root of our need to control, we find FEAR. It may be fear of the unknown. Fear of not coping. Fear of loss. Or possibly even fear of looking stupid. And as our efforts to control other people and events invariably fail, our fear increases.

Trust, on the other hand, is a quality of the soul. While control is a tool of the mind, TRUST AND FAITH ARE ASPECTS OF THE HEART. Trust comes with the deep knowing that we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. When we trust enough in life to give upour need to control, we can relax and open to the flow of energy in our lives. This brings peace of mind.

“The only real security in life lies in relishing life’s insecurity.”
— M. Scott Peck

“Do not abandon trust when your ego thinks things should be different than they are.”
— Wayne Dyer

Forgiveness

“To err is human; to forgive, divine.” -Alexander Pope

I’ve heard this quote dozens of times, but I never knew who said it! We are spiritual beings living in human form. We are capable of all things divine – and prone to all things human. We make mistakes. We mess up, we blow it – and sometimes stupidly, too. But the divine in us knows that this is all a part of the process, that we are growing and learning and finding our way every day. When we forgive ourselves, and others, we are tapping into that pure potential of divinity within each one of us.

REMEMBER YOUR SPIRITUAL SIDE

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”
— Soren Kierkegaard

Reminding ourselves often of our spiritual natures truly changes the quality of our lives. It helps us relax, slow down, lighten up, and generally find more space and joy in life.

When we get down on ourselves or life, we can pull back and ask, “How might my soul regard this situation? What am I being invited to experience?”

This shift in perspective helps us let go of the resistance that always comes with negativity. As energy once again begins to flow, our outlook brightens.

“Spirituality is the sacred center out of which all life comes, including Mondays and Tuesdays and rainy Saturday afternoons in all their mundane and glorious detail. … The spiritual journey is the soul’s life comminglingwith ordinary life.”
— Christina Baldwin

We’re in the midst of a movement against “overapologizing”—especially for women, who tend to apologize more often than men because they have a lower threshold for what counts as offensive behavior. To be clear, caring about how your actions affect others is rarely a bad thing. But the deeper problem seems to stem from the lack of understanding around why we apologize. Sometimes it’s just a reflex. And sometimes, it’s not coming from a place of concern at all.

Daily Good: The Monk, the Butcher & the Origins of Deep Counting

Our lives are based on what we count and how we count it. Somik Raha asks what would be different in our lives if we changed how we engage with counting. Raha takes us through stories of what is meritorious, which leads us into deep counting– counting which facilitates meaningful experiences. He then brings us into the understanding of how making distinctions is an act of creation and is juxtaposed against perceiving ourselves as nothing. This is the transcendent loop of infinity and seen in the scientific dance of making finer distinctions within a community, which has revealed a picture of larger, more meaningful truth. This truth is shared through stories that lead us to reflect on what counts and helps us transcend division and touch the reality of integration

CO-CREATION

“[Manifestation is] the art of fashioning a co- creative, synchronistic, and mutually supportive relationship between the inner creative energies of a person’s own mind and spirit and their counterpart within the larger world in order to bring a new and desirable situation into being.”
— David Spangler

I have always understood that Spirit works through us. Only recently have I really come to appreciate how Spirit works WITH us. The divine life force partners with our unique perspective, our passion and our skills to create new life situations.

We are not passive vessels for God’s will. To realize our highest potential, we must co-create with the divine.

“We must see ourselves as co-manifestors — partners in manifestation — all engaged in the primal act of unfoldment and emergence. Each act of manifestation may be directed toward a specific outcome, but it also contributes to the greater manifestation of the wholeness, love, compassion, and creativity of the primal source from which we all come.” — David Spangler

Forgiveness

“To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.”

-Robert Muller

Think of this from a purely economical point of view. When you invest in blame, judgement, criticism and victimization, what do you receive in return? Does an attempt at making someone else feel bad bring any real benefit to you personally? Or could it actually cause you harm? Now, knowing that we are each responsible for our own choices and responses, think about this: When you invest in forgiveness, acceptance, understanding and harmony, what do you receive in return? Here there are many rewards! Among them: peace of mind, coherence, stability and love.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR TODAY?

“Most people are so busy knocking themselves out trying to do everything they think they should do, they never get around to do what they want to do.”
— Kathleen Winsor

When we clearly set an intention, our conscious and subconscious minds mobilize to help us meet that intention. At the start of each day, thoroughly review what commitments you have made to others for the day, and decide what commitment(s) you will make for yourself.

What can you do today that will move you one step closer to your personal goals? Own your power to choose to meet your own needs. After all, we are much better able to help others when our own needs are met. And at the end of the day, when you’ve honoured your commitment to yourself, acknowledge your success.

MBG: Mushroom extract may help save bees

Over the past decade, beekeepers have experienced dramatic colony losses, with average bee losses of more than 30 percent. Causes range from pollution to habitat loss to viruses transmitted by parasites.

It’s on the last of those causes that research may have found a sliver of hope. Scientists may have discovered a way to combat the viruses, and all it took was some mushrooms and the dreams of a one-time long-haired hippie.

Daily Good: The Dinner Party

Loss is part of life for all of us, but the tendency in our time is to carry that burden alone. Lennon Flowers had lost her own mother to cancer and was carrying that burden alone when her friend and colleague Carla Hernandez reached out to her. Carla invited Lennon over to share dinner with other friends who’d lost a loved one, and the Dinner Party was born. Today, there are thousands of Dinner Partiers active at over 200 tables in over 90 cities and towns worldwide.

Vulnerability.
Such a scary word.
It’s defined as the state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.

For me, vulnerability means trusting a person with the rawest places of yourself—and not knowing how they will handle those places. It’s sharing your story without knowing the outcome.

EarthSky News: Watch for false dawn or dusk

The September equinox came on September 23, 2018 (or September 22 for us in the Americas), and the moon is new on October 9. That combination makes these next few weeks ideal for seeing the zodiacal light, also known as the false dawn. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, look east, about an hour before the light of true dawn.

Patheos-Pagan: Magical herbs, plants and foods for protection

I was recently asked about the best herbs to use for protection. My answer to any question along the lines of ‘what herbs are best to use’ is to go with your intuition. Trust it. What works for some might not work so well for others. There are of course some ‘standard’ (for want of a better word) herbs that can be used for the magical purpose of protection but I wholeheartedly believe that it will work better if you choose it based on your own gut instinct.

Inner Journey:

DAILY FORGIVENESS

“As long as you don’t forgive, who and whatever it is will occupy rent-free space in your mind.”
— Isabelle Holland

We cannot avoid daily resentment and thoughts of guilt. They are a part of human nature. What we can do is release their grip on us. We can forgive others and ourselves daily.

Forgiveness requires nothing in return. There are no conditions. It gets rid of old baggage and clears up unfinished business. It leads us to a life of authenticity, lightness and directness. Forgiveness is the highest form of letting go of resentment and ego.

True forgiveness is more than an apology, understanding and acceptance. There is an element of recreating and re-imagining. There is a need to envision ourselves as more loving, interdependent, courageous and compassionate. Forgiveness requires honouring the sacred journey of learning about life – our life and others’.

“Whatever we have done, we can always make amends for it without ever looking back in guilt or sorrow.”
— Eknath Easwaran

A Note from the Universe

The main thing those who’ve “passed” would like to tell those who’ve not “passed,”  is that once you get over the shock of having safely arrived—completely intact, cool as ever, and bathed in love—what you’ll miss most about Earth, after ice cream, is the beguiling romance of uncertainty.

Oh yes you will.

You really do have it made,

Prayer

“Time spent on the knees in prayer will do more to remedy heart strain and nerve worry than anything else.”

-George David Stewart

Long before Prozac, there was prayer. Can you see the prescription now? “Pray two prayers, twice a day until symptoms subside. Then continue the treatment over the course of a lifetime to prevent symptoms from recurring.” Prayer is a remedy. We can turn our burdens over to God and feel the weight drop from our shoulders. Why do we feel the need to carry around all that heaviness? Pray. And then pray some more. And then keep praying. And feel the lightness return.

MBG: A Ritual For Boosting Your Self-Esteem As Soon As You Get Out Of Bed

Most of us start the day by looking in the mirror and judging (negatively) our appearance. This literally means our first interaction with anything or anyone is negative. Rather than starting our days by undermining ourselves, we should spend our first moments affirming our worth. In this short video, Kathryn Budig guides us through an easy trick for getting inspired and energized in the first five minutes of your morning.

Daily Good: Awakening Through Writing

Albert Flynn DeSilver’s latest book is out, Writing as a Path to Awakening: A Year to Becoming an Excellent Writer and Living an Awakened Life. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon interviews the author, poet, and leader of writing workshops about the difference between writing as a creative endeavor and writing as a gateway to spiritual inquiry. They also discuss how to explore difficult subjects such as failure and death, and how such deep inquiries can help open us to the present moment.

A large part of this book is concentrated on spells for children and young folk. There are spells here for general fears, anti-bullying, and also nightmares, things that can plague folks of any age, but are particularly troubling for youth. There are also simple ways to both ground and center yourself which can be helpful for anyone. Inner Journey: THE FIRST STEP TO FORGIVENESS

“To get to forgiveness, we first have to work through the painful experiences that require it.”
— Christiane Northrup

To forgive, we do not have to say that whatever happened was okay. In fact, before we can forgive, we need to allow ourselves to really feel the pain of the experience. If we don’t fully acknowledge our hurts, we will continue to carry them subconsciouslyand they will drain our energy.

A Note from the Universe

I just met with someone very, very fond of you.

Actually everyone here is very, very fond of you.

Anyway, this friend said to tell you that just because most people are looking for what they think they don’t have, doesn’t mean they don’t have it.

She also said you still look fab in black.

Weird, huh? (I mean the first part…)

Today’s Recipe: Grain-Free Cheesy Jalapeno Bread

I made these bread for a friend who is on a strict keto diet that’s to help with a certain ailment. The flour that you’d usually find in this bread has been replaced with Parmesan cheese, and you’d almost never know it. For only having 4 ingredients, this bread is chewy, moist, and crazy delicious! You can up the heat factor by adding more jalapeno, but I kept it on a medium-heat level here.

Solitude

“The secret of solitude is that there is no solitude.”

-Joseph Cook, Conscience (1880)

So the secret is out! When we understand that we can never be “alone” because God is always with us, then we will never be lonely. We will cherish our solitude, and consider it time alone with God.
