In many traditions of Paganism, banishing is done to get rid of negative or unwanted energy, or even people who may be causing problems in our lives. While some traditions frown upon banishing as manipulative magic, on the theory that it impacts the free will of another, if your tradition has no prohibitions against such things, then there’s no reason you can’t do a banishing spell.

Daily Good: George Orwell: Why I Write

When George Orwell was sixteen, he discovered the joy of words while reading Paradise Lost. In this essay, Orwell considers his motivations for writing. In general, he believes writers are motivated by four reasons– sheer egoism, aesthetic enthusiasm, historical impulse, and political purpose. It is the age in which a writer lives that provides the reason. By 1936, Orwell was firmly grounded in political purpose: “Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism.” He explains this is not “wholly public-spirited,” but the drive by “some demon” and while he cannot be certain which of the motivations is actually stronger, it is only when his motivation is political that his books are alive and have meaning.

Inner Journey:

COMPASSION

“What I want in my life is compassion, a flow between myself and others based on a mutual giving from the heart.”
— Marshall B. Rosenberg

“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.”
— Thomas Merton

“When we experience the pain of another person, we instinctively want to take away that pain. But by taking away the other person’s pain, we also take away his or her opportunity to grow. To be truly compassionate, we must be able to share another person’s suffering and pain — knowing there is nothing we can do to relieve it and that we are not responsible for it, and yet knowing and understanding what that pain feels like.”
— John Gray

Compassion is a quality of soul.

Self-Realization

“I had become a new person; and those who knew the old person laughed at me. The only man who behaved sensibly was my tailor: he took my measure anew every time he saw me, whilst all the rest went in with their old measurements and expected them to fit me.”

-George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) Man and Superman, 1903

Every day we are growing and learning and changing. Physically, our bodies create new cells all the time, renewing each part of us. Mentally, we learn and understand more with every experience we encounter. Emotionally, we grow and mature through our relationships, which come and go and teach us, too. And since we are actively pursuing our spiritual growth, we can see the changes in ourselves spiritually – we are aware of the changes we create in our lives. So, we are new every day – and we can start fresh from right where we are. Since we know that about ourselves, we can also know that for others – we can let go of grievances and allow for the possibilities.

Inner Journey:

VALUE THE PROCESS

“If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear … as it is, infinite.”
— William Blake

When we stop and pay attention to ourselves, we begin to see clearly the habits and patterns that have kept us asleep and confused and misled for so long. With awareness, we can choose to shift from the selfish and narrow outlook of our personality to the all-embracing generosity of our soul, simply by changing our perspective.

Change your mind and you’ll change your world.

“You watch your mind to see who you are not. I watch my mind to gain a sense of its content, which has always been my pain. As I watch it, I get a sense of its impermanence. Thoughts come and go as part of a process. I see how content dissolves into process and begin to see the patterns in the process. Realizing it isn’t MY suffering, MY pain, it becomes THE pain. I’ve gone from the tiny, the small, and the individual to the universal. I feel OUR pain. When we do, we go from fear to compassion. Fear is MY pain, compassion is THE pain.”
— Stephen Levine

Present
“No mind is much employed upon the present: recollection and anticipation fill up almost all our moments.”

-Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

Most of the time, the way our minds work, we’re either thinking about something that happened in the past, or thinking about something that is going to happen in the future. Meanwhile, we’re missing the present moment, the here and now. We’re taking away from the juy that exists only in present moment awareness. It’s almost like we need a little alarm to keep us awake. SMART QUESTIONS TO KEEP HANDY

“Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.”
— Anthony Robbins

Last time, we talked about questions to avoid. Today, let’s consider some that are truly empowering:
• Is there a message for me in this experience?
• What’s the gift in this situation?
• What can I learn from this?
• What’s the most loving thing I could do now?
• What’s the most important thing for me to focus on now?
• What would I do if I knew I could not fail?
• What would I do if there were nothing to fear?

A Note from the Universe

Dreams come true, that’s what they do. The only variable is when.

For the slow approach: Resist. Attach. Insist. Deny. Stop. Second guess. Whine. Argue. Defend. Protest. Cry. Struggle. And ask others, when you know the answer yourself.

For the quick approach: Visualize. Pretend. Prepare. Dodge. Roll. Serpentine. Do not waver over intentions, but over methods. Show up, even when nothing happens. And give thanks in advance.
You knew that,

Body

“We should conduct ourselves not as if we ought to live for the body, but as if we could not live without it.”

-Seneca the Younger (5? BC – AD 65)

There is a kind of mindfulness that we need to observe when taking care of the body. We need to exercise, but not overdo. We need to eat properly, but not too much. This is a precious package that is ours to take care of. And when we take care of the body, it takes care of us. We all have this in common. We may look so different on the outside – different shapes, sizes, colors, ages, whatever. But on the inside- it’s all the same basic equipment. What makes us “tick” is all the same “stuff.”

Be aware that any label puts limits on you. Today, experience how it feels to let go of the labels to rest in ‘I am.’ Feel the freedom, the spaciousness, the infinite potential of simply being.

Understanding
“Those who understand only what can be explained understand very little.”

-Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916)

There is so much more to this world that what we can actually see and hear and feel. There is so much that is without explanation, but that is beyond explanation. There are unlimited possibilities all around us, at all times – how could we even venture to guess what they all could be? When we realize that our lives can open up to these possibilities, we allow understanding to pour in and nourish us.

The Greek goddess Hestia watches over domesticity and the family, and was traditionally honored with the first offering at any sacrifice made in the home. Inner Journey:

THE EYES OF THE SOUL
Today, we want to share a passage from Martia Nelson’s book, ‘Coming Home’:
“My greatest teacher was the experience of living in split realities: personality and true self. Personality is our daily companion, our conscious self that sees the world through the eyes of limitation and dutifully keeps us informed about what we can and cannot do. True self, on the other hand, patiently stands by, offering the unwavering knowledge that a state of vibrant well- being and unlimited possibility is our true nature, a birthright that can be lived if we choose to do so. … True self simply refers to the aspect of our being that is completely aware of its expanded nature no matter what we may be experiencing at the time.”

Whenever we feel constrained, fearful, unworthy, inadequate or anything we deem to be negative, we have identified with our personality. We can always choose to view the same situation from the perspective of our soul.

“As a Witness, you begin to discover that you are not that which you have been observing; you are not those things that you have been noticing about your body. Instead, you are the noticer.”
— Wayne Dyer

Lore for April

April, the fourth month of the current Gregorian calendar and the second month of Spring’s rule, derives its name from Aprillis, the Latin name for the ancient Roman love goddess Aphrodite. Other reference sources give aperite, the Latin word meaning “to open,” as the origination of the month’s name.
The traditional birthstone amulet of April is the diamond, and the daisy and the sweet pea are the month’s traditional flowers.

April is shared by the astrological signs of Aries the Ram and Taurus the Bull, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities:
Aphrodite, Artemis, Astarte, Erzulie, Terra, Venus, and Ying-Hua.

Transformation

“The sacred call is transformative. It is an invitation to our souls, a mysterious voice reverberating within, a tug on our hearts that can neither be ignored nor denied. It contains, by definition, the purest message and promise of essential freedom. It touches us at the center of our awareness. When such a call occurs and we hear it – really hear it – our shift to higher consciousness is assured.”

-David A. Cooper, 1994

In this passage, David Cooper writes about the shofar, the ram’s horn sounded in synagogue services during the Ten Days of Penitence. But there are a lot of different ways that ‘the sacred call’ may be expressed. The fact that we are pursuing our spiritual growth, that we are allowing ourselves to be more of who we really are, shows that we have heard that call! We know that life has meaning, and we are transforming our own lives to reflect that.

Daily Good: Mary Oliver: Poet of Awe

Mary Oliver was in a class by herself. Distinguished with a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award, she was viewed with suspicion by literary critics for her status as a kind of rock star poet. For those of us who read her like a daily liturgy, her name is synonymous with other such essential words: mystery, wild, awe, terror, devotion, gratitude, grace. All of them come alive in her simple poems, that seem to rise from the crossroad of nature and spirituality, brimming with good questions. Fabiana Fondevila begins her process of saying goodbye in this essay full of beautiful snippets from the poet who helped so many of us find our way home to devotion and prayer through wonder and awe.

MNN: Young hosta shoots are edible. Who knew?

Add hostas to the list of plants you may have your yard that serve double duty as both edible and ornamental. The entire plant can be eaten — from the young shoots that emerge from the ground in early spring to the flowers that bloom in mid-late summer — but it’s most common to eat the shoots. The shoots can be sliced up and eaten raw in salads, or they can be cooked and prepared in a number of ways.

EarthSky News: Is Sirius the most luminous star?

Tonight – March 24, 2019 – look outside, and you can’t miss Sirius, the brightest star in the nighttime sky. Is Sirius the most luminous star? No. To astronomers, the word luminous refers to a star’s intrinsic brightness.

Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major (the Greater Dog), looks extraordinarily bright in Earth’s sky. It’s our sky’s brightest star. But its brightness stems primarily from the fact that it’s only 8.6 light-years away.

Patheos-Pagan: Exploring Daily Practice

A few years ago I started going to the gym on a regular basis. I would listen to music on my headphones (earbuds, whatever) and walk on the treadmill while my daughter was in karate class. I’ve never been an athletic person and running only happens if I’m being chased, but there was an unexpected side effect from my little workout routine.

Inner Journey:

DO YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF?

“We cannot rise higher than our thought of ourselves.”
— Orison Swett Marden

What do you believe about yourself?

If you are experiencing a lack of something in your life, chances are that you hold a belief in your subconscious that says you aren’t worthy of having that quality. Write in your journal the answer to these questions for yourself:
• Where are you not good enough, not worthy enough?
• How willing are you to receive?

“We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”
— e. e. cummings

Daily Good: A Moment with Mr. Rogers

“I interviewed Fred Rogers, creator and host of television’s Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, by telephone a few years before he died. The occasion was the publication of his new book. Mister Rogers arrived on television after I grew up but I’d watched his show with our young daughter. She and I both preferred the often frantic Sesame Street, finding the Neighborhood a bit slow, sometimes a bit boring. Yet we kept watching it because we sensed something real and true behind the words and deeds of Fred Rogers and his friends and puppets on the show.” Jeff Zaleski shares more in this engaging piece about his interaction with a beloved national hero.

EarthSky News: Moon, star Regulus on March 18 and 19

On March 18 and 19, 2019 – the moon is moving through the constellation Leo the Lion, past Regulus, the brightest star in Leo, representing the Lion’s Heart. On these nights, the glare of the bright waxing gibbous moon might make it difficult to see all the Lion’s stars. But you’ll probably see Regulus, which is a 1st-magnitude star, that is, one of our sky’s brightest stars. And you might also glimpse the pattern of stars of which Regulus is a part. This backwards question mark pattern is a famous asterism within Leo, called The Sickle.

Inner Journey:

CHOOSE DIFFERENTLY TODAY

“It is always your next move.”
— Napoleon Hill

The great benefit of heightened awareness is that we have more choice in how we live our lives. At any moment, we can purposefully choose a new experience for ourselves. We can choose to pay attention, breathe more deeply, laugh, rest, play, appreciate, do something different – the possibilities are endless.

Whenever you remember, TAKE YOURSELF OFF AUTO-PILOT and really examine your situation. Take charge and make a choice that will enrich your experience. At the end of the day, reflect on what happened and how you felt when you chose a new line of thought, feeling or action.

“We cannot tell what may happen to us in the strange medley of life. But we can decide what happens in us — how we can take it, what we do with it — and that is what really counts in the end.”
— Joseph Fort Newton

“When a defining moment comes along, you can do one of two things. Define the moment, or let the moment define you.”
— Tin Cup (the movie)

And remember: “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”
— Neil Peart

Compassion

“What value has compassion that does not take its object in its arms?”

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944)

Compassion at its best is active. We can feel someone’s pain, and then we can actually do something to alleviate that pain. When we come together with compassion, our hearts join, and we feel our connection with Spirit and each other.
