Elephant Journal: The Power of Female Friendships: how we can Support Instead of Tear each other Down

Eight of us go down to the beach, blankets and yoga mats in hand.
We cross under street lamps and a bridge occupied by a dozen tabby cats.
Arriving to a foggy pier, we lay out our mats in a circle. We adorn the center with tea lights, sage, a tarot deck, and crystals. Fifty feet away from our circle, a green light illuminates the area. The largest full moon of the year is somewhere in these clouds, but for now we only have this blinking green light at the end of the pier.

EarthSky News: Moon passes Mars, Pleaides, Aldebaran March 10-12

On March 10, 11 and 12, 2019, watch for the waxing crescent moon sweeping to the south of the red planet Mars, and then on to encounter a red star, Aldebaran, and the famous Pleiades star cluster.
On the evening of March 10, as seen from around the world, the moon will be shining beneath Mars in the west after sunset. One day later – March 11 – the moon will have moved in its orbit; notice it’s closer to Mars. Then the moon moves on in orbit around Earth. By March 12, it is near the Pleiades and Aldebaran, both of which are important sky signposts in the constellation Taurus the Bull.

-William Blake (1757-1827)
Think about the energy of the sun. It provides light and heat and even solar power. It is there for us all day; we can count on it. Daily Good: Reconnecting to the Soil, to Heal Ourselves and the Planet

“For thousands of years Black people have had a sacred relationship with soil that far surpasses our 246 years of enslavement and 75 years of sharecropping in the United States. For many, this period of land-based terror has devastated that connection. We have confused the subjugation our ancestors experienced on land with the land herself, naming her the oppressor and running toward paved streets without looking back. We do not stoop, sweat, harvest, or even get dirty because we imagine that would revert us to bondage.” More in this thought-provoking piece.

Part of the work of healing our relationship with soil is unearthing and relearning the lessons of soil reverence from the past

WHAT IS YOUR DESTINY?

“The significant business of your life is alive and well, awaiting discovery, within your very soul. You and I were born to come into ourselves as complete and distinctive persons. Accepting this, we build a valuablelife.”
— Marsha Sinetar

What is the significant business of your life? What is your purpose? Andrew Schneider says that purpose “is more than just having a direction. It is about one’s place in the universe. It is the journey of finding that place and being there and living fullywhatever that place is. It is your own unique place that nobody else has, had, or will have.”

How would you describe your place in the universe?

“We become powerful in the face of our fears when we have a sense that we make a difference in this world. Affirmations of purpose communicate the truth that we are all meaningful participants in this Universe and thatwe are worthy of giving and receiving love. Some affirmations of purpose are:

– I know that I count and I act as though I do.
– I spread warmth and love everywhere I go.
– I am a healing force in the Universe.”

Herbal Muse: Turmeric Generates New Brain Cells

More than one million adults in the U.S. are diagnosed with a chronic brain disease or disorder each year. This includes Alzheimer’s, stroke and Parkinson’s, which affect aging adults the most. Adhering to a healthy lifestyle and a diet abundant in “brain foods” like flavonoid-rich berries and antioxidants from herbs and green tea, can go a long way to keep your grey matter in good working order. Score big for engaging in mental exercises, like reading and crossword puzzles, too. But scientists now believe that an aromatic compound in turmeric root may hold the key to the recovery of brain function through the generation of new stem cells.

The herbs in this formula have been used to induce relaxation and promote sleep for centuries and modern research validates their efficacy. Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), for example, a member of the mint family that grows in the moist woodlands of northeastern North America, contains several flavonoid compounds (i.e., apigenin, baicalin and wogonin) with demonstrated anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. The calming properties of passionflower and lavender are also well documented. In the latter, the mild sedative effects are produced by aromatic organic compounds called ketones. Patheos-Pagan: Acknowledging Our Magical Origin Stories Makes Us Stronger

Inner Journey:

HEAL THE PAST

“What you bring forth out of yourself from the inside will save you. What you do not bring forth out of yourself from the inside will destroy you.”
— Gospel of Thomas

We can transform painful memories by re-imagining them from the soul’s perspective of love and meaning.

Andrew Schneider says that all experiences have the purpose of serving the soul. An experience in the past blocked us because our fear at the time distorted our perception of what happened. To transform this limiting experience, we must bring what was then unconscious into the soul’s realm through consciousness.

We can do this by following these steps:
1. RECALL the past experience that might inhibit us.
2. OWN the experience (no judgment, blame, etc.).
3. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for it and the consequences (i.e., the experience was determined by my subjective perception of what occurred, dictated by my lack of wholeness — specifically my fears).
4. GIVE IT MEANING (the soul was attempting to gain some kind of mastery or skill, but we didn’t know that at the time).
5. RE-IMAGINE it from the perspective of soul consciousness (showing its higher purpose).

“Letting go of our suffering is the hardest work we will ever do. It is also the most fruitful. To heal means to meet ourselves in a new way — in the newness of each moment where all is possible and nothing is limited to the old.”
— Stephen Levine

Spirituality

“The spiritual quest begins, for most people, as a search for meaning.”

-Marilyn Ferguson, The Aquarian Conspiracy, 1980
We talk a lot about spiritual growth, but lets look a little deeper into what that really means to us. I think it’s true that most of us found ourselves on a spiritual path because we were looking for “more,” because we instinctively knew that there was something beyond the material world that could sustain us, nourish us, and fill our hearts. And perhaps all of our questions aren’t answered, but we catch glimpses of profound peace, and joy, and that keeps us going. Each day is new, each day we learn and grow and bask in the glow of spirit.

Inner Journey:

PRACTICE DETACHMENT

As our consciousness rises, our perspective becomes more and more impersonal. What does this mean?

It means we are increasingly able to view our lives and the rest of the world with detachment. This does not mean we are cold and uncaring. Rather, we are self- contained. We have well-defined boundaries and we are able to think and act objectively, clearly and responsibly.

When we have learned detachment, we do not get hooked into the thoughts and feelings of others. We are not easily upset or manipulated. We may feel compassion for others but this does not cloud our ability to choose how we think, feel and behave. We also do not need others to behave in any particular way.

“Until we take how we see ourselves (and how we see others) into account, we will be unable to understand how others see and feel about themselves and their world. Unaware, we will project our intentions on their behavior and call ourselves objective.”
— Stephen Covey

THE KEY TO CREATIVITY

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge islimited. Imagination encircles the world.”
— Albert Einstein

Do you know the key to creativity?

It rhymes with weed. It produces the oak tree. We often eat it or grind it up for flour. It can mean cause or origination. You guessed it. It is SEED.

Our minds love to associate one thing to another. But as we get stuck in very fixed patterns of thinking, we think of fewer and fewer connections. We are ruled by habits, associations and automatic responses. So we must stimulate our thinking with lots of different seeds to chart new paths in our brains.

“Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive.”
— Napoleon Hill

Commitment
“If you don’t make a total commitment to whatever you’re doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. It’s tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stand up and starts putting his life jacket on.”

-Lou Holtz
Lou Holtz is the well-known football coach, and he’s talking about teamwork, and the importance of commitment to the team. The analogy he uses is great because it’s so visual – and you can see how one person’s lack of commitment affects those around him.

I was thinking about the commitment our ancestors made when coming to this country. Can you imagine the courage it took to leave home for somewhere, something unknown – the possibility of something better? Once they set out in that “boat” there was no turning back. If we could only have that courage, that commitment, in our own lives to just “go for it!” Yes, there are risks – that comes with the territory, but like another saying goes: “no risks, no rewards!”

REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM

“We focus on the negatives, losing ourselves in the ‘problem.’ We point to our unhappy circumstances to rationalize our negative feelings. This is the easy way out. It takes, after all, very little effort to feel victimized.”
— Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

Nothing and no one can make us a victim. We do it to ourselves when we allow external circumstances to hold power over us.

Although we have no control over what happens to us, we ALWAYS have a choice in how we respond. We hold our power when we accept complete responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and actions.

Truth

“This is the character of truth: it is of all time, it is for all men, it has only to show itself to be recognized, and one cannot argue against it”

-Voltaire (1694-1778)
Truth is the great clarifier. I think of Jack Nicholson in “A Few Good Men” being grilled on the witness stand by Tom Cruise – it’s obvious that Jack’s covering something because the pieces aren’t falling into place. And he gets frustrated and yells at Tom: “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!” It’s one of those great moments in film where you get that “ah-ha!” and then the truth comes out. The truth might not always be pretty – but it is what it is, and it wants to be discovered.

Elephant Journal: The Bravery of Allowing Ourselves to be where we Bloom.
It’s okay to acknowledge that some environments simply do not facilitate our highest growth.
If you plant a plumeria tree in the alps, no one blames the seed when it doesn’t bloom. It’s so clear to us that the environment was not supportive to that particular seed.

EarthSky News: How to locate planet Uranus

Tonight – January 14, 2019 – the waxing gibbous moon is roughly one day past first quarter phase and shines rather close to the 7th planet, Uranus, on the sky’s dome. Uranus is located in the the constellation Pisces the Fishes, though very close to the border of the constellation Aries the Ram. This faint planet – barely bright enough to be glimpsed with the eye alone on a moonless night – will cross over into the constellation Aries in February 2019, but the moon will leave this section of the starry sky after a day or two.

Inner Journey:

DEFINE ‘RICH

“It ain’t so much trouble to get rich as it is to tell when we have got rich.”
— Josh Billings

How do you define ‘rich’?

If you want greater wealth, what does that mean for you? A large annual income? If so, how large? A beautiful home? Health? Security? Happiness? To be in service?

Get really specific about what would bring you a rich life. There are no right and wrong answers here. Don’t judge your desires. Just dig deep to discover what it is that you really want. If you want things, explore what qualities of life those things represent to you.

“No one can tell whether they are richer or poor by turning to their ledger. It is the heart that makes a person rich. One is rich according to what one is, not according to what one has.”
— Henry Ward Beecher

“If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free. If our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed.”
— Edmund Burke

One of the things I’ve learned from witnessing civilization after civilization after civilization is that one should never underestimate the profound resiliency of the human spirit, nor how swiftly things can change for the better, often overnight.

Moments

“Each moment we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that never was before and never will be again.”

-Pablo Casals
I was given this quote when I was sixteen, and I have it displayed in my office today. Being “in the moment” is one of those things that is so easy to say, yet sometimes so hard to do. The moments seem to pass by us so quickly. We find ourselves saying: “Where did the time go?” So it’s important to stay present, and to recognize the value of those moments. In spirit, there is no time or place… but we’re here, in this physical body, on this earth, for a reason. Here there is time, here there are moments – moments we can hold and treasure, moments where we can learn and grow.

Daily Good: Abused Wolves and Troubled Teens Find Solace in Each Other

“A strong gust of wind is answered by a chorus of wolf howls in Southern California’s high desert. Wearing hoodies and well-worn sneakers, city kids make their way up a mountain. Navigating the high desert terrain can be a challenge for some, and a few lag behind. Leading the way is a wolf named Malo. For many of the teens who find their way here, Wolf Connection’s Youth Empowerment Program is their last chance; they have been kicked out of school, or have been in gangs or in and out of foster homes

MNN: 9 mythical places you can visit in real life

Where myth and reality meet

We all grew up hearing stories based on myths. Thanks to these tales — and the books, artwork, movies and cartoons they inspired — most of us have developed images of these mythical places in our minds. But not all of these images have to stay locked in the realm of imagination. Many famous legends are set in or inspired by real places.

EarthSky News: Go young moon hunting

Tonight – January 7, 2019 – given clear skies, many of us around the world may be able to spot the slender young moon in the western sky at evening twilight. But don’t tarry because the moon will set before nightfall. An unobstructed horizon in the direction of sunset and a pair of binoculars will assist you on your young moon quest. If you miss the moon at dusk on January 7, try again after on January 8

Inner Journey:

PURPOSE BRINGS JOY

“Our purpose is hidden in our joy, our inspiration, our excitement. As we act on what shows up in our life our purpose shows up.”
— James King

For many of us, our joy is truly activated when we get a bigger picture of who we are and why we are here.

Most of us need to enlarge our self-concept. We may see ourselves as a bag of bones but, in truth, we are eternal, multi-faceted and multi-dimensional spiritual beings having a human experience. It’s time to think of ourselves as much larger and granderthan just a physical and emotional being confined in a body.

“There is no more important step you can take than to define your life’s purpose. It develops your sense of belonging to our universe.”
— Arnold Patent

Wisdom

“Wise men hear and see
As little children do.”

-Lao-Tzu (6th cent. B.C.)
Children see things with an open mind and an open heart. Wisdom is not being childish, but rather it is being child-like in our curiosity and wonder. It allowing possibilities to present themselves in front of us. It is marveling at the grandeur of life.
