Inner Journey: INTUIT AND DO IT

“If doubt is challenging you and you do not act, doubts will grow. Challenge the doubts with action and you will grow. Doubt and action are incompatible.”
— John Kanary

To reap the greatest benefits from intuition, we need ACTION. Be in motion. Act as if your highest expectations have already happened. Be in front of more opportunities and people. Let go of any blocks or attachments. Create mental space and physical space. Plan your work and work your plan.

Miracles rarely happen by doing nothing. Most miracles happen through other people.

What actions can you take that will move you towards your goals?

“Never forget that life can only be nobly inspired and rightly lived if you take it bravely and gallantly, as a splendid adventure in which you are setting out into an unknown country, to meet many a joy, to find many a comrade, to win and lose many a battle.”
— Annie Besant

Love you madly

“Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

This is actually a very spiritual concept. Courtesy is more than just manners – it’s kindness. It’s showing both respect and appreciation for our fellow human beings. The way the world is today, being courteous can be a challenge at times. We get impatient, and frustrated, and short-tempered. But that’s when it’s time to take a breath and remember the wise words of Emerson, there is always time enough for courtesy.

Kindness will take you very far today. It’s not a show of weakness or inferiority to engage in that random act of kindness. Think of it as acting out of generosity of spirit. The bigger your heart today, the more respect and cooperation will come your way. Make sure your kindness is genuine and from a genuine place. Then you’re virtually unassailable.

Inner Journey: CALM THE MIND

“All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.”
— Blaise Pascal

Meditation calms our minds and makes it easier for us to pay attention to the reality around and within us. Meditation breaks through the masks that have built up as our identity. It helps us see through our defences and connect with unacknowledged and unloved aspects of ourselves. It opens us to higher mind and the voice of intuition.

We can consciously choose meditation as a way to become more aware of who we truly are. If we don’t take the initiative to open to our authentic selves, we can be certain that deep challenge and pain from life experience will push us to awaken.

“Meditation helps me feel the shape, the texture of my inner life. Here, in the quiet, I can begin to taste what Buddhists would call my true nature, what Jews call the still, small voice, what Christians call the holy spirit.”
— Wayne Muller

“In a world filled with noise, we need to quiet ourselves to hear God’s voice.”

Inner Journey: FREE TO CHOOSE

“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”
— Sigmund Freud

In his book Nobody’s Victim, Christopher J. McCullough explains, “In order to live your freedom, you must first accept reality. ‘These are the choices, and given those choices, which do I choose?’ Whether the option you select is pleasant or painful does not alter the fact that, given reality, this is your preference.

“To live your freedom, it is helpful to stop and ask yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and then notice whether, given the options, you are choosing what you really want, or whether you want to choose something else…. Sometimes the exercise of freedom involves naming your poison — all choices may lead to outcomes that are in some way painful. But the real pain is that of feeling powerless — denying your freedom.”

“Freedom is man’s capacity to take a hand in his own development. It is our capacity to mold ourselves.”

A citizen of the world. Yes! We are all in this together – no boundaries, no territories. We owe it to each other to show courtesy. In this way we are recognizing our heart connection. And our courtesy needs to extend to our friends and family, as well as strangers. Sometimes we take for granted that our family sits at the table with us and we don’t think about our behavior. But it is so important to be kind and gracious both outside our homes and inside our homes.

Inner Journey: WHAT ARE YOU FEELING?

“We know too much and feel too little. At least, we feel too little of those creative emotions from which a good life springs.”
— Bertrand Russell

Many of the qualities that bring fulfilment in life are feelings, like love, joy, freedom and gratitude.

In our overly rational world, we tend to think about how we feel, which, of course, is not feeling at all — it’s thinking.

Honour your feelings and be willing to experience them. They give us valuable feedback about what is and what is not working in our lives. They are the signposts to meaningful inner work.

“With just a little education and practice on how to manage your emotions, you can move into a new experience of life so rewarding that you will be motivated to keep on managing your emotional nature in order to sustain it. The payoff is delicious in terms of improved quality of life.”

-Pauline Kael, 1968

Some movies are so big, so fabulous, so rich with story and action and setting and wardrobe. “Gone With the Wind” is like that. Wow. It’s absolutely breathtaking, and a true classic. And some movies are smaller, just a more personal story, that doesn’t need much more than the people involved to get the point across. “Rain Man” is that kind of a movie. In the film, Tom Cruise’s character discovers that he has an autistic brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. The journey, how these two get to know each other, and get to understand themselves, and what is important in life, is just beautiful. It strikes a chord because we all have relationships in our lives from which we can learn about ourselves and our connection to the world.

Daily Tarot: The Pope

Today can be easy if you don’t try to swim upstream. Do what’s expected of you (and what you need to do, anyway) and don’t rebel, at least not outwardly. You’re given plenty of authority to convince people to help you if necessary, and there should be few if any arguments. Be calm, respect authority, and you’ll automatically be given the respect you deserve, plus more. Get a lot done!

Inner Journey: THE POWER OF ACCEPTANCE

“It is permissible to take life’s blessings with both hands provided thou dost know thyself prepared in the opposite event to take them just as gladly. This applies to food and friends and kindred, to anything God givesand takes away… As long as God is satisfied do thou rest content. If he is pleased to want something else of thee, still rest content.”
— Meister Eckhart

Our life begins to change in magical ways when we open to the experience of life AS IT IS. With acceptance, we stop fighting what is happening. And this creates space, an opening for new relationships to unfold.

Explore unconditionally saying yes to the facts of life. Accept your past and where you are now. Unconditional acceptance is unconditional love and this is healing.

“Sometimes what seems like surrender isn’t surrender at all. It’s about what’s going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain ofnot being true to it is far, far greater.”

I quote Gandhi quite a bit in WisdomNews. We can learn a lot from what this very wise man had to say. And we can also learn from how he lived his life. Fortunately, there is a beautiful movie, called “Gandhi,” which gives us some insight into his character. It’s amazing that in basically 3 hours we can see the kinds of things that Gandhi experienced. It gives us insight into our own nature, and our own potential for growth.

“Our purpose is hidden in our joy, our inspiration, our excitement. As we act on what shows up in our life our purpose shows up.”

For many of us, our joy is truly activated when we get a bigger picture of who we are and why we are here.

Most of us need to enlarge our self-concept. We may see ourselves as a bag of bones but, in truth, we are eternal, multi-faceted and multi-dimensional spiritual beings having a human experience. It’s time to think of ourselves as much larger and grander than just a physical and emotional being confined in a body.

Study
“The great business of study is for a mind adapted and adequate to all times and all occasions; to which all nature is then laid open, and which may be said to possess the key of her inexhaustible riches.”

-Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792)

Study is exercise for the mind. And what happens, is that just like when we exercise our body and we discover how strong we are, when we exercise our mind we discover how wise we are! The muscles were there all the time, but when we work them, and pay attention to their development, they serve us by being able to lift weights, or hike a mountain, or run a marathon. And our mind is there for us to use the same way. We can be creative, we can be problem-solvers, we can be wise. Our strength, both in body and mind, comes from within.

Inner Journey: RAISING YOUR SIGHTS

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
— Albert Einstein

To grow in consciousness, we expand our perspectives on life. So how do we do that? The more we work with the universal — the concept of unity and wholeness, the more everything makes sense. Parts have meaning when they are understood to be parts of a bigger picture.

Consciousness is all about relationships — especially how the lower relates to the higher and how the darkness can exist within the light. Hold and experience contradictions like anger with love. Let opposites coexist in you without choosing one over the other.

“Higher consciousness, enLIGHTenment, comes from meaningful experiences and lessons passed with the understanding that there truly is only one law – the Law of Love. When one leads a life expressing this belief, the mind and heart begin to open to new realities, and other dimensional truths become known.”
— Dr. Norma Milanovich & Dr. Shirley McCune

Poetry
“Poetry is above all a concentration of the power of language, which is the power of our ultimate relationship to everything in the universe.”

-Adrienne Rich

Poetry is just one way to express our connection with the universe. Music does it with sound, art does it with color and texture, and poetry does it with language. While the description is elusive to us in prose, poetry allows us to go beyond mere description, to abandon the confines of “structure” and convey our feelings untethered.

Inner Journey: PRACTICE DETACHMENT

As our consciousness rises, our perspective becomes more and more impersonal. What does this mean?

It means we are increasingly able to view our lives and the rest of the world with detachment. This does not mean we are cold and uncaring. Rather, we are self- contained. We have well-defined boundaries and we are able to think and act objectively, clearlyand responsibly.

When we have learned detachment, we do not get hooked into the thoughts and feelings of others. We are not easily upset or manipulated. We may feel compassion for others but this does not cloud our ability to choose how we think, feel and behave. We alsodo not need others to behave in any particular way.

“Until we take how we see ourselves (and how we see others) into account, we will be unable to understand how others see and feel about themselves and their world. Unaware, we will project our intentions on their behaviorand call ourselves objective.”
— Stephen Covey

Poetry
“Poetry begins when we look from the center outward.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Poetry is personal. Whether or not we write the poem ourselves, a poem becomes “ours” by the effect that is has on us. We take it to heart, and bring it forward into our lives. Lyrics to a song work the same way. We remember them, and carry them around with us. The meaning can change from person to person depending upon the interpretation.

Daily Tarot: The Tower

The biggest danger you face today is being aloof and thus fail to see an approaching problem. This can cost you the chance to intercept the difficulty and minimize it, if not avoid it all together. Pay attention without getting paranoid, and take nothing and no one for granted. Danger may not lurk within every single shadow, but a small misstep can sometimes cause problems that are way out of proportion to the cause.

Daily Good: Trail of Light

This beautifully moving film features Aralyn Doiron, a delightful woman who has trained to be a Death Walker, someone who values a relationship with death and someone who values life. She suggests that it is only when we acknowledge that we are going to die one day, that we can truly start to live. The fact that many of us are separated from death is a disconnect from our humanity. She encourages having normal conversations about death, something we don’t usually talk about, bringing death more into our lives in an enlivening way. Death teaches us about impermanence and about valuing what we have in the moment. { read more }

Inner Journey: STEP INTO SELF-AWARENESS

“Getting in touch with your true self must be your first priority.”
— Tom Hopkins

Here are some different aspects of self-awareness:
•Know yourself – Explore who you are: your defences, your blocks, your talents, your aspirations, etc.
•Accept yourself – We are at war with ourselves when we resist or deny certain aspects of who we are. Acknowledge the truth of who you are right now – the positives and the negatives. Only when we own our present reality can we change.
•Control yourself – Set clear, conscious intentions and discipline yourself to meet them.
•Express yourself – Go to your heart to identify what has meaning and purpose for you. Live your truth. Identify ways you can give back to life and be in service.

We work on each of these aspects all the time. But as our lives go through cycles, we predominantly work on one of them more than the others. Which aspect are you more conscious of lately?

“Our lives improve only when we take chances … and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves.”
— Walter Anderson

“Adventure can be an end in itself. Self-discovery is the secret ingredient that fuels daring.”
— Grace Lichtenstein

A Note from the Universe

Do you know what’s already happened this month? A million Beethovens were born. A million Oprahs. A million Einsteins. A million Florence Nightingales. A million Martin Luther Kings. And a million Madame Curies, to name just a few. Each as capable of moving mountains, touching lives, and leaving the world far better than they found it.

And so you can just imagine how all of us “here” watch in anticipation to see which ones will have the courage to do whatever little they can each day, with what little they’ve got, from where they are, before their baby steps turn into giant leaps for the legions who will follow them.

It’s so in you,

Poetry
“Poetry is that art which selects and arranges the symbols of thought in such a manner as to excite the imagination the most powerfully and delightfully.”

-William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878)

Poetry seems to be a lost art sometimes, I don’t think we appreciate it enough. I like that with just a few words a poem can illustrate a concept that seems too difficult to explain. It’s because we feel the poetry in our heart first, and then think about its meaning and how it applies to our own lives. I like to read a poem out loud every night before I go to sleep. It puts me into that state where I am ready to dream.
