Daily Good: What It Means to Hold Space & 8 Tips to Do it Well

“To truly support people in their own growth, transformation, grief, etc., we can’t do it by taking their power away (ie. trying to fix their problems), shaming them (ie. implying that they should know more than they do), or overwhelming them (ie. giving them more information than they’re ready for). We have to be prepared to step to the side so that they can make their own choices, offer them unconditional love and support, give gentle guidance when it’s needed, and make them feel safe even when they make mistakes.” In this piece, author Heather Plett shares eight concise, clear, and readily-applicable tips she learned from others who have held space for her during tough times. { read more }

Inner Journey:

BELIEVE IN YOUR UNLIMITED POTENTIAL

“You cannot see anything that you do not first contemplate as a reality.”
— Ramtha

How do you typically define yourself? Do you tell yourself and others that you are slow and methodical, that you have two left feet, that you are lazy, or unimaginative or that you can’t hang on to money?

In our unconscious self talk, most of us rarely say positive things about ourselves. List the positive and the negative ways you describe yourself. Then look over your list and contemplate how those definitions limit your ability to be cosmic in your outlook and performance.

CoffeyTalk: Tuning In

Our body is an instrument that sends us signals all the time. This body is our friend, and it’s trying to help us. When we pay attention to its little messages things go easier for us. These messages are subtle, so we need to tune in to pick up on them. The vibrations are there.

We know a kitten is happy because we can feel it purr. And then we know something has startled her when the purring stops and her ears flick. When we’re happy, our body is relaxed and we feel good. But when we get stressed, we tense up, our stomach might ache or our head might hurt.

We can use these signs to gauge the situations around us and make better decisions. Tune into the vibrations and see what happens.

Today we have many tools to help us tune in to the body. Wearable devices measure pulse, breathing, steps taken and more! Make use of this technology to get more information about the body and help it to get what it needs.

USE YOUR BREATH TO RELAX YOUR BODY

“Breath is the link between the inner and outer worlds.”
— Alice Christensen

We live in very demanding times, and our health depends on our being able to relieve our bodies and minds from constant stress. Breathing with awareness can focus and concentrate our attention inside. This slows down our pace and eases the pressure, anxiety, anticipation and excitement that are common stress reactions.

At any time, you can consciously experience your breathing to help you concentrate your mind and relax your body. Compare how you feel after your session with how you felt before. Write about your experience in your journal.

“Controlled deep breathing helps the body to transform the air we breathe into energy. The stream of energized air produced by properly executed and controlled deep breathing produces a current of inner energy which radiates throughout the entire body and can be channeled to the body areas that need it the most, on demand.”

MBG: Overwhelmed By World News? There’s A Spiritual Practice For That

At their root, most spiritual practices are meant to help you keep your heart open and your mind calm—no matter what life brings. But Western culture oftentimes takes this one step further and equates the use of spiritual practice with feeling “good.” Meditating will make you happier. You’re only anxious because you’re not trusting a source larger than yourself. Visualizing a positive outcome will ensure your success. You’ll just feel better if you lean into your true nature.

Those ideas have their merits in some situations, but in times of real human emergency, leaning on spiritual ideals or beliefs in this way can have the opposite effect:

Patheos-Pagan: Discernment – The Most Powerful Tool

I wrote an article about keeping silent with magickal workings and I’ve received some interesting responses. I still maintain that keeping silent about spellcraft is important, however, Witchcraft is not a ‘one size fits all’ system. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa. What I love about magick is the Law of Paradox; two things in opposition to each other can both be true. This concept is why discernment is the most powerful tool a witch possesses.

Inner Journey:

BEING GENUINE

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

When we don’t know who we are — or if we are afraid to be who we are — we betray ourselves. We pretend to be who we think we are. Our self image is made up of our experiences, desires and other people’s ideas and expectations of us.

Maintaining this false self is a betrayal of ourselves. In all deep spiritual journeys, there is the experience of betrayal. Betrayal always tells us to adjust our life to be more authentic. What we identify with is all important.

There are large betrayals (e.g., your partner leaving you) and small betrayals (e.g., disappointments). They are all experiences of being wounded for the purpose of breaking down the defenses of the personality. When we allow the wounding and accept the betrayals as divine gifts, we greatly benefit.

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
— Dr. Seuss (via Elena)

“What you must dare is to be yourself.”

Inner Journey:

FEEL YOUR EMOTIONS

“The key is to not resist or rebel against emotions or to try to get around them by devising all sorts of tricks; but to accept them directly, as they are.”
— Takahisa Kora

Emotions are energy in motion. They bring us information if we are willing to experience them. Unfortunately, many of us are afraid of the energy of emotions and so we automatically resist them. And when we refuse to experience our emotions, we block them up. They become trapped and that entrapment drains our energy and brings continuing discomfort.

Don’t let emotions push you into action or reaction. Just STOP and PAY ATTENTION. Allow them to be and to speak to you. Oncem they are acknowledged, their energy is released.

“Instead of resisting any emotion, the best way to dispel it is to enter it fully, embrace it and see through your resistance.”
— Deepak Chopra

“We have to become more conscious of our feeling-world. By learning to identify the ‘emotional baggage’ and manage our feeling-world reactions, we can view life based on current information instead of being held captive by our past.”
— Doc Childre

“Our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge.”

Enthusiasm

“The measure of an enthusiasm must be taken between interesting events. It is between bites that the lukewarm angler loses heart.”

-Edwin Way Teale

Can’t you just picture this scenario? A fisherman who LOVES to fish doesn’t just love those moments when he actually lands one – he loves the whole process. Similarly, an actor with an enthusiasm for his craft is just as happy doing a part in a community theatre play as he would be starring in a feature film. What makes for an “interesting event?” What compels us to hang in there? It’s the whole process that generates enthusiasm when we truly love to do what we do.

Daily Good: Little Panic: What It Takes to Break Free from Anxiety

When anxiety takes hold of us, it distorts our experience of the world and causes turbulence in our minds, wreaking havoc on our thoughts and emotions. For someone with severe panic disorder, this can shake them to their very core. Amanda Stern poignantly expresses her experience with anxiety in her book “Little Panic: Dispatches from an Anxious Life,” which Maria Popova expertly introduces in Brainpickings. It was a sinking feeling that her experience of life is not what others experience. The difficulty in putting that into words. The realization that in some way this is what all of us experience. The relief at a diagnosis, and what it takes to break free

RESPONSIBILITY BRINGS POWER

“To be tested is good. The challenged life may be the best therapist.”
— Gail Sheehy

What holds you back from being all that you are?

In your journal, list at least 5 things that hold you back.

Now review your answers. Have you blamed people or factors outside of yourself?

It’s important to understand that ALL obstructions are rooted in our internal blocks. Even the problems that appear to be outside of us are only reflecting back to us problems we have inside. Once we address our inner issues, the outer problems disappear.

Be personally accountable for everything in your life and watch your perspectives shift. We claim our power when we accept responsibility for our lives.

A Note from the Universe

Have you heard about the “Bewitching Hour”?

Actually, it’s top secret, so I’ll whisper.

Every single morning, ever since time began, before the sun even rises, the drums start beating, the choirs start singing, the energy starts rising, and every single soul who has ever lived scurries around the plane of manifestation as a chanting begins… and gets louder and louder… and goes faster and faster until… a feverish pitch is reached and the celestial skies part with a clap of thunder, revealing billions upon billions of the most beautiful angels you have ever seen. Flying down from the heavens, some with wings outstretched, others with wings pointed back. Darting, diving, banking, and rolling – some so fast they’re only a blur – while others seem to float by as if catching what remained of a midsummer night’s breeze. Every one of them a reflection of the greatest, the loveliest, and the highest I’ve ever imagined. Every one of them a messenger of hope, and peace, and joy; healers and teachers, comforters and creators. And every one of them about to greet a brand-new day in time and space with a morning yawn, sleepy eyes, and the power to ROCK THE WORLD.

This is the “Bewitching Hour.” Shhhh…

And if you listen real hard, you can you still hear the drums.

Hosanna in the highest,

The Universe

Music

“Nothing recalls the past like music.” -Madame de Stael, Corinne (1807)

We’ve all had that experience of driving around in the car, flipping around the radio stations, when a certain song comes on that takes us back to our junior year in high school, the dance, the gym, our “crush” at the time. Music has a way of doing that. It creeps into our memory and imprints itself onto our psyche. When we hear a familiar song again, we can repeat the lyrics, even if has been years since we last heard it play. That’s one reason why couples have “their song” – to remember the romance and take themselves back to the time when they were falling in love.

Thoughts

“When you rule your mind you rule your world. When you choose your thoughts you choose results.” -Imelda Shanklin

Our minds are so constantly busy that we often forget that we actually have a choice in the matter. We can choose our thoughts! And by choosing our thoughts, we are choosing our experiences and creating our futures. And we need to remember that our reactions are thoughts, also. Instead of letting our emotions ride on auto-pilot, we can choose to take a breath and take inventory rather than giving in to an impulsive reaction. In this way, our thoughts can lead us in a much more productive direction, one that creates solutions rather than problems.

Breathwork has been construed as the link between consciousness and the spirit realm. Some maintain that it’s a shortcut to meditation. Whether you practice breathwork in a yoga class or as part of a PTSD healing protocol, engaging in controlled purposeful breathing patterns can actually help control the inner workings of your body, from heart rate variability to calming anxiety.

Elephant Journal: Suicide doesn’t Discriminate: 6 Warning Signs that could save someone you Love

Last Tuesday morning, we woke to news that designer Kate Spade had hung herself—with a scarf.
By Friday morning, the news was covering Anthony Bourdain’s suicide by hanging. As I combed the articles and updates for suicide resources, I found most of them lacking. In many cases, the juicy, morbid details took center stage over the more important topic of discussion—where to get help.

The Netherlands’ fifth largest city, Eindhoven, is best known as the birthplace of electronics giant Philips, for its top-notch technical institute and for being an all-around hotbed of design, innovation and charged-up Dutch geek culture. Its most iconic building is an amorphous, 82-foot-tall glass and steel structure dubbed “De Blob” that serves as a portal to a massive underground bicycle garage

Inner Journey

DON’T AVOID THE VOID

“When we feel stuck, going nowhere — even starting to slip backward — we may actually be backing up to get a running start.”
— Dan Millman

To change, we must go through a transition zone. It’s not easy being in transition. Thoughts, beliefs and habits are all in flux. It can create a sense of groundlessness, of being in a void that can be quite uncomfortable.

When we’re in the void, our first impulse will be to revert to old habits because they feel comfortable. Our goal is to hang in there until the change is complete. Knowing that TRANSITIONS ARE PART OF THE CHANGE PROCESS helps us muster the courage to put up with the discomfort, the uneasiness, the void.

Change requires a letting go of what we’ve always known and done to allow in something new. We need to trust ourselves and higher forces to unfold a new reality for us.

“Every positive change – every jump to a higher level of energy and awareness – involves a rite of passage. Each time to ascend to a higher rung on the ladder of personal evolution, we must go through a period of discomfort, of initiation. I have never found an exception.”
— Dan Millman

Humor

“Sexiness wears thin after a while and beauty fades, but to be married to a man who makes you laugh every day, ah, now that’s a real treat!” -Joanne Woodward

Sure, Joanne Woodward can talk – she’s married to Paul Newman! But look what she really values in her husband: his sense of humor. Our sense of humor will take us far in this life. Laughter is like medicine – it keeps us healthy and feeling good. It’s a way of experiencing joy, and a joyful life is a spiritual life, recognizing and appreciating our connection with the Divine.

MNN: 13 inspiring quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.

King’s famous words are a reminder of how to live in any era.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s name is synonymous with the civil rights movement that swept the nation in the ’60s. He fought for equal rights for African-Americans at a time when segregation was prevalent. From his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington in 1963 to his famous Alabama march from Selma to Montgomery, King was a beacon of hope during a dark time in American history. He advocated for non-violence, preaching love, acceptance and equality while pushing for change.

Movies allow us to experience our grandest dreams. They inspire us, take us on journeys, and offer new perspectives.

They plant ideas and give us the visual language to describe and understand them. Full of symbolism and metaphor, quotes and history, and the possibilities of tomorrow, they share the dreams of others that have become realized, and help us to experience our own.

As a yoga teacher, wellness blogger at Om & the City, and proud dog mama living in New York City, my home is my sanctuary. Whether I’m trying to drown out Manhattan traffic to tune in to my meditation practice, streaming my favorite soul 1970s tunes to test a yoga flow, or asking Alexa to turn on a podcast while I’m cooking, Sonos helps me take control of the big city noise and fill my home with the sounds that enhance my life. Patheos-Pagan: Why We Believe in Untrue Things

I got through most of the Ostara/Easter season without seeing the dreaded “This is Ishtar: Pronounced Easter” meme. (For those of you not in the know, Ishtar/Easter is an inaccurate meme often passed around by Pagans and atheists near Easter. Ishtar was never pronounced “Easter” and the holiday we call “Easter” in English wasn’t called that for several hundred years. In other words, the entire theory is silly.) But things turned around on Easter Sunday with the Ishtar/Easter meme coming back to life on social media. (Sort of like Zombie-Jesus, but I digress.)

Inner Journey: Nothing Needs To Be Fixed

“If you are ready to accept all which you find in yourself, you will be able to move through everything with deep sensitivity, awareness, love and understanding.”
— Gerd Ziegler

As we understand it, the spiritual journey is not about becoming perfect. It’s about acceptance, releasing judgment, and embracing everything in wholeness.

This is a great challenge for our personality. We’ve grown up comparing ourselves to others, always judging how we’re better and worse than those around us. And many of us are very good at finding fault with ourselves.

If we release judgment, then nothing needs to be fixed — including you. Explore inviting your soul to help you accept all that is and experience a whole new way of living.

“Wherever you are is always the right place. There is never a need to fix anything, to hitch up the bootstraps of the soul and start at some higher place. Start right where you are.”
— Julia Cameron

A Note from the Universe

For simply giving thanks when you lie down to sleep each night or from time to time, for no reason or rhyme, you’ll begin to move with life instead of against it.

You’ll be shown that life could not possibly be more beautiful than it already is. You’ll see that you are the fountainhead of your experience. You’ll remember that you transcend all things time and space, and thus are their very master. And you’ll find that you live in a paradise where the only thing that truly seems impossible is how powerful you really are and how much you are loved.

What else would you think about, anyway?

Phew!

Peace

“I have found that life persists in the midst of destruction and therefore must be a higher law than that of destruction. Only under that law would a well-ordered society be intelligible and life worth living.”  ~-Mahatma Gandhi

With everything we’ve been through these past few months, these words ring true, loud and clear. Peace is a process, an ongoing movement that doesn’t stand still. We are all a part of this process, and our contributions to a peaceful society make a difference.

MNN: Act like a Swede and take a ‘fika’ break today

The American concept of a coffee break sometimes feels like something of a misnomer in that the “break” aspect means little more than heading to a coffee shop or cart, getting a tall/venti/whatever size to-go cup of coffee and returning to your desk.

The hustle-and-bustle expectation of the American workday isn’t really built for an actual break, but the Swedish workday is constructed with such breaks in mind, and there’s even a word for it: fika.
