ThoughtCo: Ten Ways to Celebrate Mabon

Mabon is the time of the autumn equinox, and the harvest is winding down. The fields are nearly bare, because the crops have been stored for the coming winter. Mabon is a time when we take a few moments to honor the changing seasons, and celebrate the second harvest. On or around September 21 (or June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere),

Daily Good: A Three Year Road Trip Documenting Kindness

Do you see the world as a place of hope and optimism? Understandably, many people don’t as the barrage of bad news hits the news feed every day. Mary Latham is not one of those people though. Instead of withdrawing from the world after the loss of her mother, in 2016 she began a journey to find and create kindness as she traveled across the US. Over the past years, she says she’s found nothing but goodness and kindness in the people who offered her hospitality. Read on to discover the truth in what Mary’s mother told her: “Mary, there are always going to be tragedies in the world, but there will always be more good you just have to look for it.” { read more } https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2019/06/24/this-woman-has-been-three-year-road-trip-documenting-acts-kindness/?noredirect=on

Elephant Journal: How to use Mala Beads as our Spiritual Armor.

What is a mala?
As a jewelry designer who makes mala beads, I get asked this question a lot. And the answer is surprisingly involved.
In a nutshell, a mala is a set (or string) of beads that is traditionally used for prayer or meditation. But I believe it offers so much more that. I like to refer to malas as spiritual armor, because they help protect, heal, and guide us on our journey through life.

Patheos-Pagan: Autumn Equinox: Balance Meets Preparation

I love September. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, Summer changes to Autumn this month. The Autumn Equinox, or “Mabon” as named by Aiden Kelly, is the second harvest of three. This is when we “gather in” what we’ve sown over the Spring and Summer. Doing so reminds us to be thankful for the fruits of our labors both in a literal and metaphorical sense.

Inner Journey:

NOTHING NEEDS TO BE FIXED

“If you are ready to accept all which you find in yourself, you will be able to move through everything with deep sensitivity, awareness, love and understanding.”
— Gerd Ziegler

As we understand it, the spiritual journey is not about becoming perfect. It’s about acceptance, releasing judgment, and embracing everything in wholeness.

This is a great challenge for our personality. We’ve grown up comparing ourselves to others, always judging how we’re better and worse than those around us. And many of us are very good at finding fault with ourselves.

If we release judgment, then nothing needs to be fixed — including you. Explore inviting your soul to help you accept all that is and experience a whole new way of living.

“Wherever you are is always the right place. There is never a need to fix anything, to hitch up the bootstraps of the soul and start at some higher place. Start right where you are.”
— Julia Cameron

Destiny

“Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.”

-William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925)

This is one of the big spiritual discussions of all time – how much of our life is predetermined by destiny versus how much control or how much say we have in what happens to us in this life. No matter what happens outside of us, we still have the choice in how we respond to it. That choice is what allows us to create our own future.

MAKE FRIENDS WITH TIME

“We race to win, but at what price? Driven by the threat of time, we wonder why we feel so empty at the end of action-filled days.”
— Diana Hunt

Do you fly through each day with your eyes always on the clock? In western cultures, we’ve been taught that we need to impose our own order on life. As a result, we think we need to control every aspect of our day.

How might you enter into a new relationship with time? How might you take back the power you’ve given to the clock?

This is the time of your life. How are you spending it?

“When busyness is the measure of time, no matter how much time exists it is never enough.”

Teachers

“An understanding heart is everything in a teacher… One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”
-Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)

We have teachers all throughout our lives. I can remember just a handful of the ones I had while I was in school, and that is because I knew that they cared about me. As an adult, I studied at The Healing Arts Center, and my teacher there was Louise Taylor. I am so grateful to Louise for sharing so much of her knowledge and wisdom with me. And she taught me, and all of her students, by example as much as by her classes. Louise is a wonderful, caring, compassionate mother, friend, and businesswoman. She radiates integrity, creativity and love. Those are qualities of a good teacher!

Daily Good: My Small Moment of Mending Brokenness

“I used to believe that I was a very accepting person. But a few weeks ago, something happened at my workplace that made me recognize my own brokenness — it helped me see the disconnect between my values, and how I respond in certain moments. I work at the front desk of a hotel. On multiple occasions over the past couple of weeks, a sex-worker reserved a room on our property. Sitting at the front desk I’d see her interacting with people in the corridor, I’d see her check-in and check-out. And I would have this incredibly palpable feeling of disgust come up whenever she walked by…But there was another side of me which was like, “Wait a minute! At the end of the day, she’s a human being with a soul and inside of her is the beauty that Mother Earth puts in each and every one of us. So why am I judging her?” What follows is a simple yet profound story of healing. { read more } http://www.dailygood.org/story/2397/a-small-moment-of-mending-brokenness-tejas-doshi/

CONQUER FEAR WITH ACTION

“Your fears are not walls, but hurdles. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the conquering of it.”

How do we conquer fear? With action. Millman says that action is the ONLY way to move through fear.

Fear aims to stop us in our tracks. When we step forward anyway, our anxiety eases. We begin to pay attention to what’s actually going on instead of being trapped in fearful speculation. When we’ve done it once, we can do it again. And again. And again.

“Many of our fears are tissue-paper-thin, and a single courageous step would carry us clear through them.”

Teachers

“No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.”

-Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931)

All of the knowledge and wisdom of the world is available to us at all times. We have only to tap into it to make use of it. The truth is that we don’t need anyone to tell us anything! But… until we can fully make use of our gifts, we could use someone to show us the way. Life is hard enough trying to make it on our own. Thanks goodness that we have teachers to guide us and give us some direction.

Every day when I wake up, I go to my kitchen window to light a candle to honor Frigga. My next task, is to light a candle to Brighid on the main altar.

Inner Journey:

BALANCE MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL

“What is [the role of money] in the search for meaning? Is our relationship to it one of the chief factors that keeps us in our prison, or could it also be a tool for breaking out, for awakening to a life filled with intensity of purpose?”
— Jacob Needleman

Our personality has a need for security. As a human in a material world, we need money to survive. If we don’t have enough for basics, our lives cannot function. At the same time, with too much emphasis on the material, we lose the spiritual awareness that brings meaning and fulfillment. The key lies in the balance.

What draws most of your attention, time and energy: spiritual growth or money? Reflect on (or better yet, journal on) the balance or lack of balance of these two in your life.

“Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul.”
— Henry David Thoreau

“View money and things not as something you create to fill a lack, but as tools to help you more fully express yourself and realize your potential.”
— Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

A Note from the Universe

Have you ever considered that having aced time and space again and again and again, you’re here this time simply for the love of the game? Just to smell the dirt? To lend a hand? Give comfort? And maybe for old times’ sake, to manifest a thriving business and a steady income like it was a morning cup of coffee, even though you’re way past having to prove anything?

Remember?

I do,

Teachers

“When the National Science Foundation asked the “breakthrough” scientists what they felt was the most favorable factor in their education, the answer was almost uniformly, “Intimate association with a great, inspiring teacher.””

-R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983)

I think we all need some sort of a mentor, or a role model, or an inspiring teacher in our lives. We may have one, or we may be fortunate enough to have several. Great teachers can give us more than we can get from books or history lessons. When we form a personal connection with a teacher, we also learn from that teacher’s life experiences. It is meaningful to us because we understand that the teacher is invested in our learning, he or she cares. That inspires us.

One of eastern North America’s most iconic animals vanished forever on Sept. 1, 1914.

The last passenger pigeon on Earth died just more than 100 years ago. And it all happened within a few decades, an early stage of what many scientists now agree is Earth’s sixth mass extinction event.

TIME FOR STILLNESS

“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget that the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it’s all about.”
— Joseph Campbell

The sages all say that the path to liberation is found in entering the stillness within. To experience that stillness, we need to be willing to regularly stop the activity for a while.

How do we do this in a busy life? We set our priorities. Perhaps it means giving up a TV program or using a coffee break to grab a few moments of solitude. Perhaps we have to ask our partner, relative or neighbour to give us 30 minutes of time away from the kids. If we really want something, we can make it happen.

“Learn to pause… or nothing worthwhile will catch up to you.”

Teachers

“The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach.”

-Paulo Freire (1921-1997)

It is true that one of the best ways to learn is to teach. It gives us a better understanding of the material from the ground up. If we can take something complicated and distill it down so that someone else can learn it, we are mastering the concept ourselves. In addition, in the role of teacher, we are asked questions – questions we might never have thought of on our own. In finding the answers, we learn more about the concept, and about ourselves. So the students become the teachers as well. We are all teachers, just as we are all students.

Daily Good: The Friendship Bench

Globally, more than 300 million people suffer from depression, according to the World Health Organization. Depression is the world’s leading cause of disability and it contributes to 800,000 suicides per year, the majority of which occur in developing countries. Yet those suffering from depression have few options due to a dearth of mental health professionals. In brainstorming how to tackle this problem, Dixon Chibanda, director of the African Mental Health Research Initiative, arrived at an unlikely solution. Since 2006, Chibanda and his team have trained over 400 grandmothers in evidence-based talk therapy, which they deliver for free in more than 70 communities in Zimbabwe. The method has been empirically vetted and has been expanded to countries beyond, including the US. { read more } http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20181015-how-one-bench-and-a-team-of-grandmothers-can-beat-depression

Inner Journey:

DID YOU FIND JOY?

“The future, higher evolution will belong to those who live in joy, who share joy, and who spread joy.”
— Torkom Saraydarian

Joy, as the energy of love, is the highest vibration on this planet. Everything in the universe is energy; it can be measured and reduced to vibrational frequencies. It’s a universal law that as we think and feel we vibrate, and as we vibrate we attract. When we are in the high joy vibration, we attract what is for our greater good.

The Ancient Egyptians saw Joy as a sacred responsibility. They believed that upon their death, the God Osiris would ask them two questions: “Did you bring Joy?” and “Did you find Joy?” Those who answered ‘yes’ could continue their journey into the afterlife.

For at least the next week or two, ask yourself these two questions each and every day:
•Did I bring joy?
•Did I find joy?

“Man loves because he is Love. He seeks Joy, for he is Joy. He thirsts for God for he is composed of God and he cannot exist without Him.”
— Sathya Sai Baba

Teachers

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”

-Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

We can all look back and remember some of our most favorite teachers over the years. And chances are, what made them so memorable to us is not the subjects that they taught, as much as the way they taught. I still remember Dr. Herriot in 10th grade math. She knew I was slacking off and she challenged me to do better. I was so surprised that someone actually called me on it, and decided to give it a shot. Dr. Herriot handed the next test back to me with a big smile on her face – I got an A. It felt great for me to see that grade, and that smile! She helped me to understand that when I put my mind and my efforts into something, I can achieve. That’s a good teacher.

Leisure

“Leisure, some degree of it, is necessary to the health of every man’s spirit.”

-Harriet Martineau, Society in America (1837)

A woman said this, so we can assume that she naturally meant every man and woman’s spirit! And this is so true. We care for the health of our body by eating right and exercising. We care for our mental health by learning new things and solving problems. The best way to care for the health of our spirit is to enjoy some time at leisure, doing what we love to do. It’s refreshing and invigorating!

Patheos-Pagan: A Ritual to Remove Curses We Place On Ourselves

In a recent private conversation, a friend mentioned that they once wished something would go away forever – and it did.
That was then – this is now. Now they have a rather different outlook on life (they’re a Pagan and not a Christian) and they regret the absence of something they’d like to have back. They said “I really shouldn’t have cursed myself like that.”

Inner Journey:

CO-CREATION

“[Manifestation is] the art of fashioning a co- creative, synchronistic, and mutually supportive relationship between the inner creative energies of a person’s own mind and spirit and their counterpart within the larger world in order to bring a new and desirable situation into being.”
— David Spangler

I have always understood that Spirit works through us. Only recently have I really come to appreciate how Spirit works WITH us. The divine life force partners with our unique perspective, our passion and our skills to create new life situations.

We are not passive vessels for God’s will. To realize our highest potential, we must co-create with the divine.

“We must see ourselves as co-manifestors — partners in manifestation — all engaged in the primal act of unfoldment and emergence. Each act of manifestation may be directed toward a specific outcome, but it also contributes to the greater manifestation of the wholeness, love, compassion, and creativity of the primal source from which we all come.”

Leisure

“He enjoys true leisure who has time to improve his soul’s estate.”

-Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

Spiritually, we know that there is no such thing as time. And yet, here we are, living this existence, and we have these constraints to deal with. There is only so much time, so many hours in a day, so many vacation days in a year. So, how do we spend our time? And more importantly, how do we spend our precious leisure time? If we take Thoreau’s advice, we spend that time in spiritual pursuits, and then we understand how wonderful leisure can really be.

Herbal Muse: Elegant Lady: Queen Anne’s Lace

Queen Anne’s lace (Daucus carota) is a member of the Apiaceae (formerly Umbelliferae) family, which includes celery, angelica, dill, parsley, carrot and many other flowering plants known for their umbrella-like flowerheads and feathery foliage. It is known as Queen Anne’s lace primarily in North America and by several other common names elsewhere, such as bird’s nest, bishop’s lace and wild carrot. Its royal moniker reputedly arose when the 18th century monarch, Queen Anne of England, pricked her finger and spilled a drop of blood onto the white lace she was darning, representing the tiny, solo reddish-purple flower visible at the center of the umbrel.

Inner Journey:

TIME TO CHANGE DIRECTION?

“Employ the power of positive quitting. Most of us view quitting as something negative, but it’s not. ‘Winners never quit,’ we’re told, when, in reality, winners quit all the time: choosing to stop doing things that aren’t creating the results they desire. When you quit all the things that aren’t working for you, when you quit tolerating all the negative things that hold you back, you’ll create a positive ‘charge’ in your life as well as create the space in your life for more positive experiences.”
— Jim Allen

“I like thinking of possibilities. At any time, an entirely new possibility is liable to come along and spin you off in an entirely new direction. The trick, I’ve learned, is to be awake to the moment.”
— Doug Hall

“Persons and societies do not submit passively to surroundings and events. They make choices as to the places where they live and the activities in which they engage — choices based on what they want to be, to do and to become. Furthermore, persons and societies often change their goals and ways; they can even retrace their steps and start in a new direction if they believe they are on a wrong course. Thus, whereas animal life is prisoner of biological evolution which is essentially irreversible, human life has the wonderful freedom of social evolution which is rapidly reversible and creative. Wherever human beings are concerned, trend is not destiny.”

Leisure

“Leisure is the mother of Philosophy.”

-Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679)

Remember the “Leisure Suits” that were so popular in the 70’s? As if we needed the appropriate attire to lounge around in… It seems funny now, but it was so stylin’ then! But maybe the real point was that we didn’t necessarily need the suits, but we did, and do, need the leisure. In some strange way, that was brought to our attention. It might benefit us psychologically to “suit up” – whether it’s in our yoga pants or in our pajamas, to spend some time down time, some time to clear our minds so that we can open our minds to deep thought.

The sweet, almond-scented blooms of meadowsweet are rich in salicin, a compound with potent natural pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. In the 1800s, chemists began tinkering with extracts of meadowsweet, and the result was the creation of the synthetic drug aspirin.

Together with water-mint and vervain, meadowsweet was one of the three herbs held most sacred by the Druids, and it is among the fifty ingredients in a drink called ‘Save’ mentioned in Chaucer’s Knight’s Tale. The flowers were often steeped in wine and beer, and are still incorporated in many herb beers today. Learn more…  https://www.herbalmusings.com/meadowsweet-profile

Patheos-Pagan: Don’t Call Me Sister: The Double Trouble Of Assumed Familiarity And Believing Only Women Can Be Witches

We are in the midst of an unprecedented transformation in witchcraft, where we have the freedom to claim the title for ourselves and openly discuss our practices. While all of us involved in this personal and societal revolution may have a common bond in calling ourselves witches openly, there are lingering dangers in making assumptions about those with us on this wild broom ride.

Inner Journey:

WHAT DO YOU FEED YOUR MIND?

“I then remembered why I avoid the ‘news,’ if that’s what you want to call it. Our ‘news’ is a misnomer, and it’s more like ‘the ongoing train wreck you can tune in to at any time when you want to divert yourself from your purpose and your happiness… lose your faith in humanity… and go from feeling like things are pretty good to feeling like the world is going to sh*t and why bother going on, I mean really?'”
— Ali Brown

Our beliefs create our reality. If we wish to live happy, healthy lives, it’s vital that we feed our minds healthy, nourishing material. The negative, sensational focus of today’s ‘news’ media hardly serves to enlighten us about the true state of the planet. Let’s open to our limitless potential by keeping our focus firmly on what uplifts us.

“The world is not dying. It’s not falling apart. It’s changing. I personally believe that pessimism is an indulgence, despair an insult to the imagination. There are wonderfully positive things out there.”
— Wade Davis

Leisure

“Nothing excellent can be done without leisure.”

-Andre Gide (1869-1951)

One of my favorite quotes is from Emerson who said: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” There seems to be a magic formula for success and excellence. We need down-time and a good attitude! This leisure time lets us clear our minds and think more efficiently. It helps us keep things in perspective. Haven’t we all had the experience where we’re working so hard, struggling to solve a problem and the answer is just not coming to us? And then, we take some time off and do something else and the answer just pops into our head! There is a purpose to this, and it is divine!
