Daily Good: A Message About Messages

The complex meanings of a serious story or novel can be understood only by participation in the language of the story itself. To translate them into a message or reduce them to a sermon distorts, betrays, and destroys them. This is because a work of art is understood not by the mind only, but by the emotions and by the body itself. { read more }

WHAT’S OFF BALANCE?

“To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious.”
— Samuel Butler

Spirit requires a balance of female and male energy, yin and yang, receptiveness and expression. Are you sensitive to intuition and inner guidance? Are you able to act on the guidance you receive? Seek to find a balance in being and doing in all areas of your life.

“The balanced energy is the birthing energy. I used to say that the birthing energy was all feminine — it’s not. You have to push and you have to be. It’s such a potent example of the dance of the feminine and masculine together, the dance that is the creative energy of life!”

Daily Good: The Understory: Life Beneath the Forest Floor

“The first time I heard anyone speak of the “wood wide web,” more than a decade ago now, I was trying not to cry. A beloved friend was dying too young and too quickly. I had gone to see him for what I took to be the last time. He was tired by pain and drugs. We sat together, talked. My friend was a woodsman. Trees grew through his life and thought. His grandfather’s surname was Wood, he lived in a timber-framed house that he had built himself, and he had planted thousands of trees by hand over the years. “I have sap in my veins,” he wrote once.” Excerpted from his recently published book, Underland: A Deep Time Journey, “The Understory” is an examination of the life beneath the forest floor. WHAT’S ON YOUR HOT LIST?

“The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want.”
— Ben Stein

A Hot List is basically a to-do list with one key difference: it only includes topics or tasks that really matter to you, those that genuinely affect your quality of life. You know — the ones you never get around to! The ones that will make your life your own!

Keep a prioritized Hot List handy to remind you to claim 5 to 15 minutes to focus on and write about what counts in your life. Even 5 minutes is better than nothing. Start small and the momentum will build.

“You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage — pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically — to say ‘no’ to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger ‘yes’ burning inside.”

Persistence

“When you get in a tight place and everything goes against you till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the time and the place the tide will turn.”

-Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1847

I remember hearing an interview that Jay Leno did once. He was asked what he attributed his success to, and he didn’t even have to think about the answer for a second. “I didn’t go away!” he said. He explained that there were many comedians who he felt were as good, or better than he was, and they all worked the same clubs, the same circuits, so they got to be friendly. But he said the difference between him and these other guys was that he never gave up. Many of the other guys got worn out, or burnt out, or just plain tired and quit. But Jay loved what he was doing so much that he couldn’t quit. He kept going after his dream, even through some pretty bleak times. And now look at him! He could quit anytime he wanted to, because he has so much success that he doesn’t need the money. But he keeps going, because he loves it. And that makes all the difference.

When we first started out, there were just a few of us involved, and we basically started the list with our family and friends’ addresses. Patheos-Pagan: Samhain: When the Veil is Thin

Samhain was originally an ancient Irish-Celtic holiday, but we know very little about how it was celebrated thousands of years ago. What we do know is that how it is celebrated today is radically different. Long ago, there were no glowing vegetables, trick-or-treating, Witches, or visits from the dead. Most of the trappings we associate with Samhain date only from the Christian era, though that doesn’t make any of them less real or witchy.

THEN AND NOW

“Time is not a line, but a series of now points.”
— Taisen Deshimaru

We understand time as a continuum. Our memories link the moments of the past and our imaginations draw on the patterns of our memories to project the future.

If we leave the movies of the mind behind, time can only be experienced now — moment by precious moment. Open in awareness to what is happening right now. Appreciate all that is. Immerse yourself in the joy and wonder of every now and life will be a gift.

“The responsibility for both present and future is in our own hands. If we live right today, then tomorrow has to be right.”

Persistence

“Diamonds are only chunks of coal,
That stuck to their jobs, you see.”

-Minnie Richard Smith, 1947

I love this because it applies in so many ways. Writers go about submitting their work and it gets rejected so many times, that they end up feeling like a chunk of coal! Or that their work, which they poured so much of their heart into, is just a chunk of coal. But, ah, when they stick to the job, keep writing, keep submitting – someone recognizes the beauty. The diamond comes shining through! We just can’t give up, no matter what business we’re in, or what we are going for. Our persistence pays off.

COMPASSION

“What I want in my life is compassion, a flow between myself and others based on a mutual giving from the heart.”
— Marshall B. Rosenberg

“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.”
— Thomas Merton

“When we experience the pain of another person, we instinctively want to take away that pain. But by taking away the other person’s pain, we also take away his or her opportunity to grow. To be truly compassionate, we must be able to share another person’s suffering and pain — knowing there is nothing we can do to relieve it and that we are not responsible for it, and yet knowing and understanding what that pain feels like.”

Persistence

“Rome was not built in a day.”

-John Clarke (1596-1658)

I’ve always heard this quote, and never knew who said it, so I was happy to come across it this time around. How appropriate! In this fast-paced society we tend to expect instant gratification. How often do you hear people complain about how slow their computers are, or their dial-up, or the pizza guy? And all that spills over into our expectations for ourselves. We want that great job NOW, that dream relationship NOW, enlightenment NOW! But we have to remember that there is always divine timing involved. The seed needs time to sprout, the sprout needs time to grow. We are like that sprout that needs to keep pushing up the dirt, keep reaching toward the sun. We’re growing every day.

Community

“Snowflakes, leaves, humans, plants, raindrops, stars, molecules, microscopic entities all come in communities. The singular cannot in reality exist.”

-Paula Gunn Allen, Grandmothers of the Light, 1991

When we think of the whole grand concept of “we are all one” – it’s kind of a stepping stone to think first of our own communities. We belong to lots of little groups – our families, our neighborhoods, our clubs and organizations. And these communities all function because of the people involved with them! They become an entity unto themselves. They have a life of their own. And these smaller communities are all part of larger communities, too – which in turn interact and grow with others. It all starts with each of us as individuals, and expands to include the entire planet.

Daily Good: Wild Mind: Reclaiming Our Original Wholeness

Our human psyches possess, as capacities, a variety of astonishing resources about which mainstream Western psychology has little to say. By uncovering and reclaiming these innate resources, shared by all of us by simple virtue of our human nature, we can more easily understand and resolve our intrapsychic and interpersonal difficulties as they arise. These resources, the four facets of the Self, or the four dimensions of our human wholeness, wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them, cultivate their powers, and integrate them into our everyday lives. There’s a facet of the Self associated with each of the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Describing the Self in this way is in keeping with traditions around the world that have mapped human nature onto the template of the four directions (and the closely related templates of the four seasons and the four times of day: sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight). { read more }

We can easily get into trouble in relationships when we assume that we know what someone else is thinking or feeling. Parents, in particular, can be quick to judge what’s going on in their children.

Rather than assuming we know someone else’s experience, we could shift our perceptions into questions. Instead of saying, ‘I know you’re hurting,’ we could ask, ‘Are you feeling hurt?’ This allows us to connect with the other with no risk of misunderstandings.

“It’s always wise to raise questions about the most obvious and simple assumptions.”
— C. West Churchman

“To assume is to be deceived.”
— Yiddish proverb

Community

“Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest.”

-Lady Bird Johnson

While computers may be filled with information, and even provide online interactions with people around the globe, there’s still no substitute for the local library. This is where we find knowledge, wisdom, comfort, and community. As much as things change, and become more high-tech, I hope that our books, and our libraries, will always be preserved. They offer a great service and easy accessibility for everyone. If you haven’t been in a while, you might want to visit the library, explore, and see what surprises you can find.

Daily Tarot: The Magician

It may be hard to be serious and stick to those dull but crucial tasks that keep the day running smoothly. Be systematic, cheerful, and don’t let it show if you feel undervalued or underappreciated. Save your sharp wit and cleverness for another time and place. Time spent with younger people or children can lift your spirits and keep things in perspective for you.

Pagan Library: Besom Chant

Anon

Besom, besom long and lithe
Made from ash and willow withe
Tied with thongs of willow bark
In running stream at moonset dark.
With a pentagram indighted
As the ritual fire is lighted;
Sweep ye circle, deosil,
Sweep out evil, sweep out ill,
Make the round of the ground
Where we do the Lady’s will.

Besom, besom, Lady’s broom
Sweep out darkness, sweep out doom
Rid ye Lady’s hallowed ground
Of demons, imps and Hell’s red hound;
Then set ye down on Her green earth
By running stream or Mistress’ hearth,
‘Till called once more on Sabbath night
To cleans once more the dancing site.

Daily Good: Wild Mind: Reclaiming Our Original Wholeness

Our human psyches possess, as capacities, a variety of astonishing resources about which mainstream Western psychology has little to say. By uncovering and reclaiming these innate resources, shared by all of us by simple virtue of our human nature, we can more easily understand and resolve our intrapsychic and interpersonal difficulties as they arise. These resources, the four facets of the Self, or the four dimensions of our human wholeness, wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them, cultivate their powers, and integrate them into our everyday lives. There’s a facet of the Self associated with each of the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Describing the Self in this way is in keeping with traditions around the world that have mapped human nature onto the template of the four directions (and the closely related templates of the four seasons and the four times of day: sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight). { read more }

Be The Change

Consider which of the four facets of Self calls for cultivation in your life. Do one thing this week to support and nurture this side of your universal soul.

MNN: In the U.K, less mowing means more flowers
Wildflowers will flourish along roadsides, and that’s good for wildlife.

In the United Kingdom, those grassy strips next to the road or the sidewalk are usually mowed four or more times a year for aesthetic reasons, but new guidelines call for a fresh approach: cutting them only twice a year, saving time, money and most importantly, the wildflowers and habitat they provide for wildlife.

EarthSky News: Seek for a young moon after sunset

For a number of intrepid sky watchers, the hunt for the young moon counts as great sport. Seeking out a young moon that might – or might not – fleetingly show itself as a pale, skinny crescent in the western evening twilight demands fortitude and patience.

Patheos-Pagan: Four Salutations of the Day, Reformed

Once upon a time, among the Reformed Druids of North America (RDNA), there was a practice called the Four Salutations of the Day. You can find this practice still today at http://rdna.info/FourDay.doc. This devotional required the use of a staff and was done at for times a day: dawn, noon, dusk, and midnight, or what they called “stars”. I always loved the idea of this practice, but it wasn’t something I ever undertook

Community

“People had changed – or rather fridges had changed them. Mrs. Munde felt that being able to store food for longer periods had broken down the community spirit. There was no need to share now, no need to meet every day, gathering your veg or killing a few rabbits.”

-Jeannette Winterson, Boating for Beginners, 1985

Communities can form out of necessity, but also out of common interests or goals. Now we just seem to have more choices. We may not need community for our physical survival, but we do need it for our well-being. We gravitate toward each other, and to communities where we can help and support each other in various ways.
