Inner Journey:

PERCEPTION DEFINES OUR REALITY

“The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.”
— Henri Bergson

Our entire universe is energy — vibrating waves of pure potential. The electromagnetic vibrations of our consciousness interact with the energetic potential that exists everywhere as the life force to ‘collapse’ the waves and create matter. So the patterns of our minds create the form of our world.

By simply observing a form, we influence it. We in turn are influenced by others. This challenges us to be more aware of the quality of our being and the vibrations we transmit.

“There is no reality in the absence of observation.”
— The Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Wonder

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder… he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”

-Rachel Carson, 1965

Children have this wide-eyed sense of wonder, everything is new to them, everything is a surprise. If we could just see through their eyes again for a day… look at a line of ants as a parade rather than a nuisance, see the clouds as dancing rather than threatening rain… how might this change our perspective? Wonder brings with it a sense of contentment, the world looks good and we feel good in it! We can learn a lot from our kids.

THEN AND NOW

“Time is not a line, but a series of now points.”

We understand time as a continuum. Our memories link the moments of the past and our imaginations draw on the patterns of our memories to project the future.

If we leave the movies of the mind behind, time can only be experienced now — moment by precious moment. Open in awareness to what is happening right now. Appreciate all that is. Immerse yourself in the joy and wonder of every now and life will be a gift.

Persistence

“Diamonds are only chunks of coal,
That stuck to their jobs, you see.”

-Minnie Richard Smith, 1947

I love this because it applies in so many ways. Writers go about submitting their work and it gets rejected so many times, that they end up feeling like a chunk of coal! Or that their work, which they poured so much of their heart into, is just a chunk of coal. But, ah, when they stick to the job, keep writing, keep submitting – someone recognizes the beauty. The diamond comes shining through! We just can’t give up, no matter what business we’re in, or what we are going for. Our persistence pays off.

SPEAK FOR YOURSELF

“An open ear is the only believable sign of an open heart.”
— David Augsburger

We can easily get into trouble in relationships when we assume that we know what someone else is thinking or feeling. Parents, in particular, can be quick to judge what’s going on in their children.

Rather than assuming we know someone else’s experience, we could shift our perceptions into questions. Instead of saying, ‘I know you’re hurting,’ we could ask, ‘Are you feeling hurt?’ This allows us to connect with the other with no risk of misunderstandings.

Like most of us, you’ve probably been asked for directions at least once in your life. While men are notorious for failing to admit when they’re lost and women less so, little research has been done on how directions are imparted and the characterization of the individual giving them. “Giving directions is a form of storytelling,” says Akiko Busch. “When people advise you to take the longest, most complicated route, it is their way of prolonging the pleasure of the journey.” In this Travel and Leisure article, Busch elaborates on how this simple act is often far more intimate than we realize, relying not only on our memory, but on our internal map of the places we hold most dear. { read more }

More than a thousand years ago, Viking armies knew a thing or two about instilling dread in those who would stand in their way.

Many of their victims lived in monasteries in the British Isles, a favorite source of slaves and plunder for raiding parties.

EarthSky News: Meet Fomalhaut, the loneliest star

Tonight, look for the loneliest star. Which one is that? Many people would say the answer is Fomalhaut, a bright star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus the Southern Fish. Fomalhaut is a bright star – visible from all but far-northern latitudes – located in a region of the sky that contains only very faint stars. So it appears solitary in the night sky

Patheos-Pagan: The Witch Reborn in Autumn: Spiritual Death and the Dance of Bones

Do you hear their call? The night wandering spirits of the Witch Mother’s horde beckon me this time of year, as does she, calling me to dance with them. The spirits of the land join with the fallen leaves, celebrating the season of letting go. As the leaves release the tree, so do I cast off what binds. Finding freedom in shedding a form that no longer serves us. The Dance of Bones, where all is reduced to the soul and the entrapments of the material world removed is nigh.

Inner Journey:

WHY? WHY? WHY?

“As long as one keeps searching, the answers come.”
— Joan Baez

Asking ourselves ‘why?’ helps us delve deeply into our main motives — why we do what we do. This process helps us go deeper into our reasoning, habits and unconscious beliefs. Once we become aware of our underlying motives, we can choose to change them, if we wish.

Regularly ask yourself, ‘Why am I…?’ Listen closely for the answer that surfaces in your mind, and write it down. Now look at your answer and ask why again. Continue with this process to reach the true source of your motivation.

“Men are more accountable for their motives, than for anything else….”

A Note from the Universe

The Learning Game:

When there is ease and simplicity in your life, it’s because earlier you learned a lot.

When there is resistance and obstacles in your life, it’s because there’s even more to learn.

And learning even more, is pretty much the main reason you’re there.

Conscience

“Let me consider this as a resolution by which I pledge myself to act in all variety of circumstances and to which I must recur often in times of carelessness and temptation – to measure my conduct by the rule of conscience.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Just as conscience is a compass, it is also a measurement devise, according to Emerson. We really know how well we are doing, we don’t need anyone’s judgment or opinion of our behavior – we have our own conscience to mark our progress. There is nothing as freeing as a clear conscience.

The Tetraktys: Witchy DIY – Sun & Moon Water Jar Tutorial

Hi witches! In this video, I am decorating two jars to collect and store Sun and Moon water. Sun water is water that has been charged with the energy of the sun while moon water contains the energy of the moon. In witchcraft, sun water represents power, masculinity, strenght, protection and charisma, and it is associated with the Horned God. Moon water is associated with the Triple Goddess, and it represents femininity, healing, love, emotions and psychic awareness.

Inner Journey: OPEN TO AWARENESS

“Mindfulness means moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness. It is cultivated by refining our capacity to pay attention, intentionally, in the present moment, and then sustaining that attention over time as best we can. In the process, we become more in touch with our life as it is unfolding.”
— Myla & Jon Kabat-Zinn

Why do we want to become more aware?

If we remain unaware, we:
• repeat the past,
• remain stuck in relationships,
• live superficial, literal and one dimensional lives,
• lack experiences of love and beauty, and
• have limited connection to others and the universe.

With awareness, we are fully involved with life. Awareness is sensing deeply and sensitively for what really is. To do this, we need to approach the present as totally new. When we can be open and attentive in each moment, we begin to free ourselves from the conditioning of the past and the suffering that it so often brings.

“If moment by moment you can keep your mind clear then nothing will confuse you.”
— Sheng Yen

Language

“There have been periods in the history of the various cultures, when the language of spirituality was clear, accurate and exhaustive. At the present time it is muddled, inadequate to the fact and dangerously equivocal. Lacking a proper vocabulary, people find it hard, not only to think about the most important issues of life, but even to realize that these issues exist.”

-Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

This is really interesting to think about. Is our language of spirituality clear, accurate and exhaustive? So many times, when asked about our beliefs, it seems it’s hard to put into words. It’s difficult to define any big concept like that because the meanings of words can vary based upon the experience of each person. But we have to start somewhere. It might be a good exercise to write up some of our own definitions just to see what kind of language we come up with to express ourselves. We might just discover something about ourselves long the way, too. Start with these: love, joy, peace, faith.

Daily Good: Inner Preacher vs Inner Teacher

Between message and meaning, “Art is co-created by artist and audience, by writer and reader.” In this Ursula K. Le Guin essay, Maria Popova explores the questions of where to find strength and hope, what is a writer’s calling in this time and place, what work will make a difference, and how we might create a community of purpose. To each, Le Guin’s answer is in trying to write well. Writing is not the “vehicle of a message.” It is lines of words that try to express things that are true and important. Truths are not put there but revealed “out of the corner of (the reader’s) eye.” It is not preached, but taught in the “area of silence, that empty space, in which other and further truths and perceptions can form in other minds.” { read more } http://www.dailygood.org/story/2383/inner-preacher-vs-inner-teacher-maria-popova/

As creators, we are not limited to evolving through tiny, incremental steps. With our potent imaginations, we can design and manifest dramatic, profound change. How remarkable! What an awesome responsibility. What fun!

Our challenge is to break free of our present concept of reality to create brand new dreams that will bring the ideal to life.

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”

We each are here for a reason. Sometimes we know the reason, sometimes we don’t, it is up to each one of us to find that reason for ourselves. Sometimes we just have to go along, doing our stuff, knowing that when we follow our hearts it leads us to where we need to be. TIME FOR STILLNESS

“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget that the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it’s all about.”
— Joseph Campbell

The sages all say that the path to liberation is found in entering the stillness within. To experience that stillness, we need to be willing to regularly stop the activity for a while.

How do we do this in a busy life? We set our priorities. Perhaps it means giving up a TV program or using a coffee break to grab a few moments of solitude. Perhaps we have to ask our partner, relative or neighbour to give us 30 minutes of time away from the kids. If we really want something, we can make it happen.

Teachers

“The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach.”

-Paulo Freire (1921-1997)

It is true that one of the best ways to learn is to teach. It gives us a better understanding of the material from the ground up. If we can take something complicated and distill it down so that someone else can learn it, we are mastering the concept ourselves. In addition, in the role of teacher, we are asked questions – questions we might never have thought of on our own. In finding the answers, we learn more about the concept, and about ourselves. So the students become the teachers as well. We are all teachers, just as we are all students.

The Secrets of the Pineal Gland

The pineal gland, which was once called the ‘third eye,’ is a little organ found somewhere down in the focal point of the cerebrum. Named for its pinecone shape, this organ secretes melatonin, which assumes a job in the body’s inner clock.

Daily Good: Chitrakoot’s Tree Man: 11 Years, 40,000 Trees

The tragic death of his wife and three children led Bhaiyyaram to vow to live only for others. He began to plant trees on fallow land near his village. No water near, so four times each day he hauled two 20-kilo boxes with a rope slung over his shoulders. Living in a hut he built nearby to guard the trees from thieves, his eleven years of work has produced a plantation of 40,000 trees. { read more } http://www.dailygood.org/story/2374/chitrakoot-s-tree-man-11-years-40-000-trees-khabar-lahariya/

Elephant Journal: 3 Reminders that the Ocean is a Home to be Taken Cared Of.

What are the problems, and where are the solutions, to help us better protect our most precious resource?
With microbeads now being considered a toxic substance in Canada we thought we’d share this photo of us hunting for plastic in the middle of what’s been dubbed “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” a massive collection of plastic waste congregated together by swirling ocean currents known as gyres.

Herbal Muse: Elegant Lady: Queen Anne’s Lace

Queen Anne’s lace (Daucus carota) is a member of the Apiaceae (formerly Umbelliferae) family, which includes celery, angelica, dill, parsley, carrot and many other flowering plants known for their umbrella-like flowerheads and feathery foliage. It is known as Queen Anne’s lace primarily in North America and by several other common names elsewhere, such as bird’s nest, bishop’s lace and wild carrot. Its royal moniker reputedly arose when the 18th century monarch, Queen Anne of England, pricked her finger and spilled a drop of blood onto the white lace she was darning, representing the tiny, solo reddish-purple flower visible at the center of the umbrel.

Inner Journey:

TIME TO CHANGE DIRECTION?

“Employ the power of positive quitting. Most of us view quitting as something negative, but it’s not. ‘Winners never quit,’ we’re told, when, in reality, winners quit all the time: choosing to stop doing things that aren’t creating the results they desire. When you quit all the things that aren’t working for you, when you quit tolerating all the negative things that hold you back, you’ll create a positive ‘charge’ in your life as well as create the space in your life for more positive experiences.”
— Jim Allen

“I like thinking of possibilities. At any time, an entirely new possibility is liable to come along and spin you off in an entirely new direction. The trick, I’ve learned, is to be awake to the moment.”
— Doug Hall

“Persons and societies do not submit passively to surroundings and events. They make choices as to the places where they live and the activities in which they engage — choices based on what they want to be, to do and to become. Furthermore, persons and societies often change their goals and ways; they can even retrace their steps and start in a new direction if they believe they are on a wrong course. Thus, whereas animal life is prisoner of biological evolution which is essentially irreversible, human life has the wonderful freedom of social evolution which is rapidly reversible and creative. Wherever human beings are concerned, trend is not destiny.”

Did you know that if you get happy enough, you can actually hear colors and see music?

Paint without numbers? Eat desserts and lose weight? Spend money and have more?

Heal the sick? Feed the poor? Love unconditionally? And live forever?

If, you get happy enough.

Leisure

“Leisure is the mother of Philosophy.”

-Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679)

Remember the “Leisure Suits” that were so popular in the 70’s? As if we needed the appropriate attire to lounge around in… It seems funny now, but it was so stylin’ then! But maybe the real point was that we didn’t necessarily need the suits, but we did, and do, need the leisure. In some strange way, that was brought to our attention. It might benefit us psychologically to “suit up” – whether it’s in our yoga pants or in our pajamas, to spend some time down time, some time to clear our minds so that we can open our minds to deep thought.

A candle wax reading is similar to reading tea leaves, but instead of reading symbols and messages formed by wet tea leaves inside your teacup, it’s the candle drippings formed in water that we interpret. With all the conflict, suffering, and healing work that needs to be done in the world today, it’s tempting to undervalue joy. Today’s Deity: Greek Goddess Bia

Bia was a Titan goddess in Greek mythology, daughter of the Titans Pallas and Styx, and had three siblings; Nike, Kratos, and Zelus. Bia was the personification of force. During the Titanomachy, the war between the Titans and the Olympians out of which the latter emerged victorious, Bia and her siblings sided with Zeus, along with Styx. To honour them, Zeus made the four siblings his constant companions.

Patheos-Pagan: The Forgetting of Our Magick

Yesterday, I attended a council meeting of our local Goddess temple. I know, how lucky am I to live in a place that has a Goddess temple?! Towards the end of the meeting, we discussed the state of the world at large and how helpless we can feel at times. One person remembered a hopeless time in their lives when all was bleak and then she remembered who she was and what she could do.

Inner Journey:

NEED HELP?

“Asking for help doesn’t mean that we are weak or incompetent. It usually indicates an advanced level of honesty and intelligence.”
— Anne Wilson Schaef

The path of healing begins with awareness that things can be different. We must be willing to open to the potential, the possibility for change.

We also need to acknowledge that we are not in this experience alone, without support. The divine power of love is here for us if we are willing to open to receive it. Sincerely ask for help and loving support will manifest in both mundane and magical ways.

“The healthy, the strong individual, is the one who asks for help when he needs it. Whether he has an abscess on his knee or in his soul.”
— Rona Barrett

Paradoxes

“All cases are unique, and very similar to others.”

-T.S. Eliot (1888-1965)

I find this to be true every day of my life. We’re each living our individual lives, going about our business, and our families- and when we take time to connect with each other, we find out that so often we’re going through the same things! We can relate to each other, because in a way we’re living out the same scenarios. It helps to share our experiences, rather than to feel that we’re in it alone.

Daily Tarot: Temerance

Pace yourself today and get more done than you might imagine as the day begins. It’s all right to be tired from time to time. It doesn’t have to cripple all your plans for the day. Maintain a sensible balance, remember to eat healthy, take a short break once and a while, and don’t aim too high. There’s plenty of work to be done that you can handle with ease.
