Elephant Journal: The Good & the Bad will Happen: How Mindfulness can help us decide what Matters

Shortly after returning to work following the birth of my eldest son, I awoke to the sound of rain.
I could hear it pattering against the windowpanes and splashing on the roof of the girls’ dormitory where I lived and worked as a school counselor. My mood soured immediately. Returning to work meant leaving my three-month-old son in the campus day care center—a painfully ambivalent experience to begin with

Patheos-Pagan: The Sacred Pause of Winter

The past four years or so have been busy. I’d like to tell you they have been productive-busy years but in truth, they have been exhausting. By the end of last year, I’d had enough. Inner Journey:

BELIEVE YOU ARE A CREATOR

“Every moment of your life is infinitely creative and the universe is endlessly bountiful. Just put forth a clear enough request, and everything your heart desires must come to you.”
— Shakti Gawain

We hold the power to create whatever we desire. Our ability to manifest the changes we desire depends on the depth and passion of our beliefs and on the focus of our attention.

With this understanding, we, as individuals and as society, can design a whole new future for ourselves. Our challenge is to break free of society’s world view, to truly empower our imaginations to create brand new realities. It brings a whole new meaning to ‘vision.’

What do you passionately desire for your own life? For the planet?

“By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The non-existent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired.”

Moments

“Let me tell thee, time is a very precious gift of God, so precious that it’s only given to us moment by moment.”

-Amelia Barr

Have you ever watched a television game show? In most of the games, there is an element of time involved. You’re up against the clock. You have 2 minutes to race through a grocery story, or 30 seconds to come up with the right answer. If you happen to be the person playing that game, you realize just how precious each one of those moments are! You focus your attention, and use the time wisely to win the game. Well, we’re lucky that life is not a game show! We have all the time we need to learn and grow and accomplish what we need to in this life. And we can start anytime, so why not start now? The prizes are all around us, just waiting to be won.

BE AWARE OF YOUR MOTIVES

“Ordinarily, everything we do is in our self-interest. Everything.”
— Anthony de Mello

“Remember, most of the things you think you need are ego trips designed to bolster your image and your perception of security…. You’ll waste a lot of energy satisfying your ego only to find that, as soon as it’s got what it wants, it ignores all your efforts and promptly nails another list of demands to your forehead. The ego will always try to force you to slave for its vision. I wouldn’t stand for that BS if I were you.”

Wisdom

“The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
Since this newsletter is called WisdomNews I thought we’d start off the new year talking about wisdom. Wisdom goes beyond knowledge. We often hear wisdom associated with sages, people who seem to know and understand those things that sometimes have no explanation. Maybe it is recognizing that connection between all things that makes everything miraculous. Wisdom is attainable, all the wisdom of the universe is at hand right now.

Inner Journey:

SPIRITUAL PATHWAYS

“In any way that men love me in that same way they find my love: for many are the paths of men, but they all in the end come to me.”
— Song of God, Bhagavad Gita

Spirit – the life force – exists in everything. It follows, then, that ANY path, any encounter is spiritual if we have the awareness to see it as such. Going deeper, going higher, emptying, connecting, believing or disbelieving, bouncing off the bottom, experiencing the heights, in pain, in ecstasy ….

Too often, we search afar for our own purpose when it is in our lives all the time, waiting for us to express it more openly. Bring greater awareness to each encounter and situation in life. Tune in to what you are inspired to do, who you are inspired to be. Your answers are waiting for you to pay attention – every moment!

“…focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”

Authenticity

“To be nobody-but-yourself – in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else – means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.”

-e.e. cummings
When you think about all the advertisements and magazines and commercials that encourage us to buy and be made-over and to do this and that to improve ourselves, it’s a wonder there’s any individuality left at all! We tend to want this actor’s hairstyle and that model’s figure – or that politician’s power and this athlete’s paycheck. All of these “things” are held up to us as the ideal. And yet, we know, deep inside, that what is REAL is so much more than that. Though we’re inundated by the mega-media machine, we must keep reminding ourselves that what we have to hold onto is who we are, and that is invaluable.

Daily Good: Okagesama

Okagesama is the awareness that what is inside the walls of your house or under the skin of your body or any aspect of your life and experience are elements that cannot be seen. They are in the shadows and in order to see them, we have to look very deeply. Gregg Krech writes that we have to see with more than our eyes. There are unseen forces in our lives that make them possible. When we reflect on this and try to identify all the unseen forces that make a thing or an experience possible, we discover that it is endless. We discover that what is in the shadows doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, but that once we bring the light of awareness to it, we often find that it is love.

Inner Journey:

WHAT’S IMPORTANT?

“Where you are headed is more important than how fast you are going. Rather than always focusing on what’s urgent, learn to focus on what is really important.”
— Stephen Covey

Time management is all about making decisions. At each step of the way, we want to choose activities that best support what we want to do with our lives. To do this, we need to be clear about our short and long-term goals.

Here’s a general question to ask yourself often: “Is this the best use of my time in terms of meeting my goals?” Sometimes, of course, we don’t have any choice. But ask yourself honestly, “Could I take more control if I really wanted to?” Often, we play the victim because we don’t want to make the effort to change our behaviour.

“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.'”

I love New Years. Something about new beginnings and chances to improve always gives me a feeling of hope and excitement. Plus, I just love champagne. It’s almost as invigorating as the idea of letting go of “the old” things you want to forget or habits you want to change. Like running like an Olympian to catch the kids’ bus every day. Or drinking that second (okay fourth) cup of coffee before three.

Spirituality & Healing: CBD Oil for Insomnia
If you toss at night, glowering at the clock in frustration, you’re not alone. About 60 percent of Americans have insomnia a few nights per week, if not more often. This can be caused by stress, illness, medicines or other factors, and is more likely to affect females and those aged 65 and older. While there are many ways to treat insomnia, some people are turning to CBD oil for relief. You may have wondered if it’s worth a try, so let’s take a look at CBD for insomnia

Daily Good: Consider Your Wake

Many of us like to consider the impact we make as a “footprint” we leave behind. But what if instead of a footprint, we imagined our actions leaving a wake? In this article, Andy Smallman explores how the metaphor of a boat in the water can be applied to our daily decisions and interpersonal exchanges. Just as a boat creates waves that affect the vessels around it, so too do our words and actions influence the unfolding of our days and the relationships with those whom we encounter. “Among the things I like about the wake image is that a wake is strongest when it’s new and close, and it comes in contact with lots of things as time passes,” Smallman writes. “In this way it is significant both right away AND in the future, the form of significance just being different.”

EarthSky News: Longest days accompany December solstice

When we say the longest days of the year come each year around the December solstice, we’re talking about the day not as a period of daylight, but as the interval from one solar noon or midday to the next. In December, a day – one rotation of Earth relative to the noonday sun – is about one-half minute longer than the average 24 hours.

Patheos-Pagan: What You Can’t See Can Hurt You

The Calvinist idea that success is a sign of divine favor is dead wrong. It’s bad theology and it doesn’t hold up to even a casual examination of how the world actually works. I’m pretty sure most Pagans agree with me here.

THE FACE IN THE MIRROR

“Our inability to see beauty doesn’t suggest in the slightest that beauty is not there. Rather, it suggests that we are not looking carefully enough or with broad enough perspective to see the beauty.”
— Rabbi Harold Kushner

Who are you? You can gaze at your reflection in a mirror but you’re not likely to see your true likeness. You are beautiful, unique, perfect. Do you see that?

The world needs you to see how whole and complete you are — now. Can you begin to own your divinity? The world needs you to know who you really are so you can be the mirror for others.

“The sun shines not on us but in us. The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, making them glide and sing.”

Today’s Recipe: Instant Pot Cranberry Orange Marmalade

I was craving my mum’s homemade orange marmalade the other morning but had ran out of it. She uses lots of orange zest in hers, which I love, so I thought I’d try to remake it with a bit of a twist in my Instant Pot… because I wanted it in an instant! I added fresh cranberries to it since we have so many around for the holidays. What a tangy delight! I’ll be making plenty of jars to give out for the holidays.

What started as an entrepreneurship project of two college students, Zachary Quinn and Brian Keller, grew into something much greater. For every hat sold, one hat is donated to a child with cancer, helping to alleviate the shame and embarrassment that often accompanies the hair loss resulting from chemotherapy. Service

“Serve self you serve society
Serve society serve yourself.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Besides helping other people, service has the added benefit of helping the person doing the serving! How could this be? Because service makes us feel good, it helps us to grow spiritually, it helps us to gain compassion. Service helps to make our society a better place, and it’s a place we all share! Because we are all one, what we do for others, we do for ourselves.

“By a shower of gifts and a heavy rain of lessons,” a good mother loves her children. This is how author and botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer came to the awakening of true happiness as she realized that the time spent and lost in her garden were the happiest moments of her days. Like her children lost in the wonder of digging in the soil, Kimmerer saw what was most important in her life as she was picking beans from within the “spiraling vines of her tepee trellis.” Kimmerer awakened to the beauty of being on this earth as part of a loving relationship with the Otherwith Mother Earth and all she nurtures. Read and listen to more of Kimmerer’s thoughts on nature.

If you follow global conservation and don’t already know the name Hansjörg Wyss, there’s a good chance you soon will.
Born in Bern, Switzerland, the 83-year-old entrepreneur and businessman first made his fortune in the Belgian steel industry before establishing the U.S. division of Synthes, a multinational medical device manufacturer best known for producing internal screws and plates used to help mend fractured bones. EarthSky News: Moon near Uranus on November 20

Tonight – November 20, 2018 – as the moon travels in front of the constellations of the zodiac, it’ll appear in the general direction of the planet Uranus. Both the moon and Uranus are near the border of the constellations Pisces and Aries tonight. Although the bright moon will drown out Uranus from view tonight, the moon will mark the approximate position of Uranus in the starry sky.

Patheos-Pagan: Kitchen Witchcraft: Garden Magic

It doesn’t matter if you only have a window sill with a pot plant on it, a small city terrace, a playing field or several acres, you can always work with the magic in your garden. The kitchen extends into the garden anyway and a Kitchen Witch will often be found pottering around in amongst the plants.

Inner Journey:

HONOUR YOURSELF

“I’d gone through life believing in the strength and competence of others; never in my own. Now, dazzled, I discovered that my capacities were real. It was like finding a fortune in the lining of an old coat.”
— Joan Mills
Take a moment to stop and think about what you give to the people and life around you. Don’t think about what you’re not doing right. Look instead at all you do that is a blessing. Many of us continually beat ourselves up for not doing or being enough. Butimagine for a moment that you are great just as you are. Feel the relief this brings! Now open to the possibility that this is not a daydream. It’s true! Believe it!
“People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.”
— Norman Vincent Peale

“We cannot rise higher than our thought of ourselves.”
— Orison Swett Marden

Passion

“It is the soul’s duty to be loyal to its own desires. It must abandon itself to its master passion.”

-Rebecca West (1985)

Something within us helps us to find our passions. It’s not like a conscious choice, like looking through a catalog and picking a hobby or something. We are drawn to things that we feel passionate about. We can’t help but move towards things that give us that drive, that energy, that life force that is so all-encompassing. We have the desires, and the passions that we have for a reason. And pursuing our passions is one of the most important things we can do while we’re living our lives.

Beliefnet: How Does Responsibility Relate To Peace?

Responsibility is a companion of freedom. When we take responsibility for our actions, we are free to act. We are free to act when we know that we can accept the consequences. When the consequences are unfavorable, we accept the challenge to take action toward a favorable direction.

Daily Good: Proust On Memory and Madeleines

“But when from a long-distant past nothing subsists, after the people are dead, after the things are broken and scattered, taste and smell alone, more fragile but more enduring, more immaterial, more persistent, more faithful, remain poised a long time, like souls, remembering, waiting, hoping, amid the ruins of all the rest; and bear unflinchingly, in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of recollection.” In this celebrated literary exploration of our evocative, mysterious relationship to memory, Marcel Proust vividly describes the torrent of experience unleashed by one ‘memorable’ bite of a madeleine, and his attempt at decoding the process

Did You Know?
The Pilgrim’s thanksgiving feast in 1621 occurred sometime between September 21 and November 1. It lasted three days and included 50 surviving pilgrims and approximately 90 Wampanoag Indians, including Chief Massasoit. Their menu differed from modern Thanksgiving dinners and included berries, shellfish, boiled pumpkin, and deer.

Elephant Journal: A Manifesto for Real Men.

We are men faced with a challenging moment in time, but men have always faced challenging moments throughout time—with courage, with clarity, and with conviction.
Now is no different.
We are men of the moment.

I am not concerned with the colour of your skin, with your politics, or your religion. I am not concerned with your nationality, your preferences, or your sexuality.
My concern is that you are a good man, a real man. My concern is for my brother.

MNN: Can pets get seasonal affective disorder?

During the shorter, darker days of winter many of us turn lethargic and gloomy. But seasonal affective disorder (SAD) isn’t just a human affliction. The animals we share our lives with may also suffer from something akin to the “winter blues.”
Here’s what experts know about SAD in pets and what you can do to alleviate it. (Hint: Some of the same things that counteract seasonal depression in people also work for our four-legged companions.)

Patheos-Pagan: The Thread of Commonality

Working in a witch shop (aka “metaphysical book store” as I name it for the fearful ones), I meet so many curious people. They come into the store, if they are not familiar with it, a bit overwhelmed, because they are a bit nervous, a bit thrilled, and enter with a whole lot of questions.

Inner Journey:

BE AWARE OF YOUR THINKING

“There is a thought in your mind right now. The longer you hold on to it, the more you dwell upon it, the more life you give to that thought. Give it enough life, and it will become real. So make sure the thought is indeed a great one.”
— Ralph Marston

Most of our self-talk comes unconsciously from our subconscious. Yet every thought that exists in our subconscious got there through a conscious decision to accept that thought.

We need to become conscious of our self-talk so we can at will choose to replace negative beliefs with positive ones. We have the power to choose an identity we love, but we need to do the work. The process of changing our subconscious beliefs requires awareness, diligence, consistency and repetition.

“Man is made or unmade by himself. In the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace.”
— James Allen

Laughter

“Man is the only creature endowed with the power of laughter; is he not also the only one that deserves to be laughed at?”

-Lord Greville

And why does man deserve to be laughed at? Because we take ourselves entirely too seriously! Think about it – we’re running around with our ear glued to a cell phone, dashing through parking lots, stressing about deadlines. All the while missing what’s really important in and all around us. And we do this daily. We can’t help it, we’re creatures of habit! Well, it’s time to get into some new habits, and we can start by realizing just how silly we really are!

Beliefnet: 4 Things You Should Be Doing to Boost Your Brain

Most people want to be smart. They want to be able to state with honesty that they are intelligent. They also want to be able to do the things that intelligent people can do. They want to be able to remember things rather than rely on sticky notes and reminders on their phone. They want to be able to solve problems on their own without assistance from other people. They want, in short, to be able to make the best use possible of their brains.
