Daily Good: The Mindfulness Skill That is Crucial for Stress

Mindfulness is known to have many advantages, including reducing stress, increasing awareness, improving physical health, and more. However, when it comes to lowering stress levels, without also practicing acceptance, we might not see the results we hope for. “Mindfulness practices that specifically emphasize acceptance teach us a nonjudgmental attitude toward our experiences — meaning, learning not to label our thoughts, feelings, or experiences as good or bad, and trying not to change or resist them in any way.” By learning to accept our difficult experiences, we can allow them to run their course and naturally dissipate, this is not the same thing as being passive. Inner Journey:

VALUING ALL WORK

“We honor life when we work. The type of work is not important: the fact of work is. All work feeds the soul if it is honest and done to the best of our abilities and if it brings joy to others.”
— Matthew Fox

What value do we unconsciously (or consciously) place on different kinds of work? How do we rank the status of different jobs? How much more do we value the big- paying jobs over others?

Just as we need to honour ourselves for doing what needs to be done, we can equally honour all others who look after life through their efforts, no matter what they may be. We can release judgment that assigns more importance to some occupations than others.

“Now in order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it: they must not do too much of it: and they must have a sense of success in it — not a doubtful sense, such as needs some testimony of others for its confirmation, but a sure sense, or rather knowledge, that so much work has been done well, and fruitfully done, whatever the world may say or think about it.”

Travel

“Why do you wonder that globe-trotting does not help you, seeing that you always take yourself with you? The reason which set you wandering is ever at your heels.”

-Socrates (470? – 399 B.C.)

Even Socrates was saying, way back when, that we can’t run away from our problems, we can’t run away from ourselves! We may end up in totally different surroundings, but we don’t change just because the scenery has changed. Travel doesn’t change us, we change ourselves because we choose to do so, by facing our issues and dealing with them. Travel can help us to learn and grow, and we can choose to take that “new and improved” version of ourselves with us.

Tended by the loving touch and care of five generations of the Yamaki family, the tree and the family survived the devastation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. In 1976 it was gifted to the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. where it remains as a symbol of the merger of lives, forests, and the human family. { read more }

Vision

“Visions are like dreams, only they occur in the waking state.”

-Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)

Are we awake? Are we thinking clearly? Are we seeing clearly? When we can answer these questions affirmatively and have a vision that has caught our attention, we need to do something about it. There’s a reason why certain visions come to us at certain times in our lives. And there’s a reason why certain visions come to certain people and not others. It doesn’t matter where this vision comes from, once we have it, it is ours. And it is up to us to act on it, to do what we can to make this world a better place.

SPACE TO EXPLORE

“No one can find his work, what he really wants to put all of himself into, when everything he does he is made to do by others. This kind of searching must be done freely or not at all.”

“As long as one keeps searching, the answers come.”
— Joan Baez

Asking ourselves ‘why?’ helps us delve deeply into our main motives — why we do what we do. This process helps us go deeper into our reasoning, habits and unconscious beliefs. Once we become aware of our underlying motives, we can choose to change them,if we wish.

Regularly ask yourself, ‘Why am I…?’ Listen closely for the answer that surfaces in your mind, and write it down. Now look at your answer and ask why again. Continue with this process to reach the true source of your motivation.

“Men are more accountable for their motives, than for anything else….”

Persistence

“Rome was not built in a day.”

-John Clarke (1596-1658)

I’ve always heard this quote, and never knew who said it, so I was happy to come across it this time around. How appropriate! In this fast-paced society we tend to expect instant gratification. How often do you hear people complain about how slow their computers are, or their dial-up, or the pizza guy? And all that spills over into our expectations for ourselves. We want that great job NOW, that dream relationship NOW, enlightenment NOW! But we have to remember that there is always divine timing involved. The seed needs time to sprout, the sprout needs time to grow. We are like that sprout that needs to keep pushing up the dirt, keep reaching toward the sun. We’re growing every day.

Remember, harm comes in more forms than just what is physical. If you need to blow off steam and exert your power, maybe take it to the gym.

Daily Good: Wild Mind: Reclaiming Our Original Wholeness

Our human psyches possess, as capacities, a variety of astonishing resources about which mainstream Western psychology has little to say. By uncovering and reclaiming these innate resources, shared by all of us by simple virtue of our human nature, we can more easily understand and resolve our intrapsychic and interpersonal difficulties as they arise. These resources, the four facets of the Self, or the four dimensions of our human wholeness, wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them, cultivate their powers, and integrate them into our everyday lives. There’s a facet of the Self associated with each of the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Describing the Self in this way is in keeping with traditions around the world that have mapped human nature onto the template of the four directions (and the closely related templates of the four seasons and the four times of day: sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight). { read more }

Pagan Library: Strings On The Winds by Taliesyn map Avaon

And it came to pass that into this time of great turmoil, there came a man clad simply and carrying unto himself little else than a harp, the likes of which I have yet to see. His name was Ahrian and he made known that he was Bard. He went unto the house of a village elder, asked lodging, and was granted it. There he stayed and he sang from the green and played the songs which drifted into the air as if they were the air itself.

Inner Journey:

FORGIVENESS BRINGS JOY

“The greatest evil that can befall man is that he should come to think ill of himself.”
— Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Do you feel worthy of having joy? Do you feel you deserve it?

The first step to activating our inner joy is to eliminate the blocks to it. We can start by truly forgiving ourselves and all others. Forgiveness calls for a shift in our perception. It is easier to forgive ourselves and others when we really understand that each of us has always done the very best we knew to do at that time.

“If we don’t forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us, we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt, because guilt is isolating, while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves, to other people, and to a larger whole.”

ORDINARY CAN BE AWESOME

“Everything in life can be nourishing. Everything can bless us, but we’ve got to be there for the blessing to occur. Being present with quality is a decision we are invited to make each day.”
— MacRina Wiederkehr

Spirit is not only found in holy places, prayer and meditation, yoga and retreats. It is everywhere — in your relationships, your work, your daily chores, in nature … if you are willing to connect deeply with your environment.

Open to connect with something and you open to its essence, its purpose and meaning. There are other dimensions of reality below what we normally see and hear. Open to the mystery.

“We live in a world of theophanies. Holiness comes wrapped in the ordinary. There are burning bushes all around you. Every tree is full of angels. Hidden beauty is waiting in every crumb. Life wants to lead you from crumbs to angels, but this can happen only if you are willing to unwrap the ordinary by staying with it long enough to harvest its treasure.”

“Language is power… Language can be used as a means of changing reality.”

The words we say carry weight, carry meaning. And it’s not only which words we say but the way that we say them, too. Look at the “spin” that can be put on things in advertisements and in political speeches. There are ways that we can make this concept work for us in our spiritual growth. Affirmations, for example. We use words and language to change our thinking, and we can change our lives. We create our own reality.

There’s a stretch of Wisconsin State Highway 66 right around where it crosses the Plover River that has a reputation as a danger zone for wildlife. When animals try to cross the road, many of them don’t make it. In 2015 alone, 66 turtles were killed trying to cross the busy highway.

EarthSky News: Sunset and the legendary green flash

It’s not hard to see a green flash with the eye alone, when sky conditions are right, and when you’re looking toward a very clear and very distant horizon. That’s why those who live near an ocean tend to report green flashes most often. A sea horizon is the best place to see them.

Patheos-Pagan: How To Use Leaf Magic This Fall

Heathens, Pagans, and Witches; we’ll make magic out of just about anything. Especially when it comes to the natural world. I’ve read blog posts on sun magic, moon magic, bone magic. I own an entire book on Water Witchcraft. But I haven’t heard much about my favorite autumn practice, leaf magic.

Inner Journey: GO FOR WHAT YOU LOVE

“Follow your bliss.”
— Joseph Campbell

It’s hard for some of us to believe that the world is served when we seek our own happiness. We’ve been taught that this is selfish.

If we stop to reflect on how we are in the world when we are happy, we can see how this serves. We have more vitality. We’re more loving and generous to others when our own needs are met.

What activities bring you the greatest joy? Your unique gift to the world will be found in those pastimes you love the most.

How can you live your joy each day?

“Spiritual growth is not made in reaction against, for all striving against imposed restrictions is imaginary. Spiritual growth is accomplished by inclination toward. We grow like the sunflower, following the light.”
— Joy Houghton

Today’s Recipe:  Cheesy Chorizo and Apple Scramble

I made this up today when I realized I had next to nothing in the kitchen. Last week, the grocery store was giving away free tubes of chorizo. I rarely say no to free things, even when it’s something I don’t utilize too much. I always find chorizo to be a bit overpowering in spice and saltiness, so I thought evening it out with some chopped apple would aid it. It was perfect! The sweetness of the apple was a great balance for this breakfast treat. I added little squares of the last tortilla I had in the fridge to make it come together like a taco. It was so very good!

Destiny

“I am not afraid… I was born to do this.”

-Joan of Arc (1429)

“All I was doing was trying to get home from work.”

-Rosa Parks, on refusing to move to the back of the bus, televised interview (1985)

I had to put these two quotes together because both of these two women showed such courage. They both saw the “big picture” and understood their role in it. Although these events happened centuries apart, one could say that they were destined. Things could not have continued the way that they were going, and each of these women had a part in changing things. They could have backed down or shied away from it – but instead they chose to step up and be where they were, where they felt they were “supposed” to be.

Daily Tarot: The Empress

Be ambitious today, in a subtle way, and meet with a lot of cooperation and good will. Your ambition does not have to be grandiose. Concentrate on small projects and sweep away a lot of loose ends and complete things that have been long lingering. Act and speak with authority, and be fully respected. Do as much as you can today, and don’t look back.

EarthSky News: Young moon, stars, a planet September 3-5

As darkness falls on September 3 and 4, 2019, watch for the waxing crescent moon to travel in front of the constellation Libra the Scales, past Libra’s alpha star Zubenelgenubi and famous green star Zubeneschamali. Then, as the moon continues going eastward in its orbit around Earth, it’ll sweep up toward the star Antares – the Heart of the Scorpion in Scorpius and a red supergiant star – and the very bright planet Jupiter.

Patheos-Pagan: Self Love: Filling My Cup Through Routine

Self-love. What does this look like? For me, creating a routine has helped me understand its meaning. Here’s what it looks like.
Every day when I wake up, I go to my kitchen window to light a candle to honor Frigga. My next task, is to light a candle to Brighid on the main altar.

Inner Journey:

BALANCE MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL

“What is [the role of money] in the search for meaning? Is our relationship to it one of the chief factors that keeps us in our prison, or could it also be a tool for breaking out, for awakening to a life filled with intensity of purpose?”
— Jacob Needleman

Our personality has a need for security. As a human in a material world, we need money to survive. If we don’t have enough for basics, our lives cannot function. At the same time, with too much emphasis on the material, we lose the spiritual awareness that brings meaning and fulfillment. The key lies in the balance.

What draws most of your attention, time and energy: spiritual growth or money? Reflect on (or better yet, journal on) the balance or lack of balance of these two in your life.

“Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul.”
— Henry David Thoreau

“View money and things not as something you create to fill a lack, but as tools to help you more fully express yourself and realize your potential.”
— Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

A Note from the Universe

Have you ever considered that having aced time and space again and again and again, you’re here this time simply for the love of the game? Just to smell the dirt? To lend a hand? Give comfort? And maybe for old times’ sake, to manifest a thriving business and a steady income like it was a morning cup of coffee, even though you’re way past having to prove anything?

Remember?

I do,

The Universe

Teachers

“When the National Science Foundation asked the “breakthrough” scientists what they felt was the most favorable factor in their education, the answer was almost uniformly, “Intimate association with a great, inspiring teacher.””

-R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983)

I think we all need some sort of a mentor, or a role model, or an inspiring teacher in our lives. We may have one, or we may be fortunate enough to have several. Great teachers can give us more than we can get from books or history lessons. When we form a personal connection with a teacher, we also learn from that teacher’s life experiences. It is meaningful to us because we understand that the teacher is invested in our learning, he or she cares. That inspires us.
