The Celtic Tree Month of Holly (Tinne) July 8th until August 4th.
HOLLY LORE
Holly has long been associated with death and rebirth in both Pagan and Christian lore and plays an important part of the Winter Solstice. In one Arthurian tale Gawain (representing the Oak King battles with the Green Knight who is armed with a holly club that is the symbol of winter. Both the Holly and the Oak are important during the Summer Solstice. During this time the Sacred White Horse of Oak transforms into the Unicorn of Holly. In ancient Rome, holly was thought to ward against lightning strikes and keep witches away. It was also a popular gift to give friends during the Saturnalia, which was celebrated during the Winter Solstice.
PLANT INFORMATIONHolly is an evergreen shrubby tree, easily recognized by it’s shiny dark green toothed leaves and blood-red berries. This plant is considered POISONOUS and should not be ingested!! Holly was used for the crafting of wheel shafts for chariots and spear shafts as well. The wood of the holly is white and particularly fine-grained and closely resembles ivory. The berries can also be used to make dye.
HOLLY IN MAGICK
Holly can be used for spells rest, sleep, and to ease the passage of death. Holly should also be used when attracting a familiar. It is said that a man who carries a bag of holly leaves and berries will attract women. It is also said that the ancient Druids advised people to take holly boughs into their homes during the cold season as a shelter for the fairies and other little people.
HOLLY PEOPLE Those born during this month are strongly connected to the earth and can have amazing physical strength. Their matter of fact solidness and generous spirit is admired and respected by others. Holly people also tend to be very religious or spiritual in an advanced way, and they are usually the last to see it. They are honest, hardworking, truthful, and pretty tolerant of most situations. So, it’s always interesting to have a spiritual epiphany. My moment is now, writing out who I am as a Witch and the path that most accurately defines my practice. And while I have devotional relationships with several goddesses, I have come to realize my witchcraft centers around one deity.
Upon first hearing the phrase “moon gardening,” images of gardeners in goddess garb sowing seeds by the light of the moon may come to mind. Which would be really fun, come to think of it, but in fact, moon gardening is much more than that.
Tonight, use the Big Dipper in the constellation Ursa Major the Great Bear to find the sky’s northern pole star, Polaris. This is the star around which the whole northern celestial sphere appears to turn throughout the night. That’s because this star is located nearly above Earth’s northern axis. In times past, wanderers on the northern face of Earth used Polaris to stay on course.

It seems like we don’t hear that word used as often lately. When we were younger, it was a really big deal to make a promise. And we knew that a promise meant something we could count on. Today there’s more hedging… we’re reluctant to “promise” results, or overextend ourselves, so we tend to hear: “Well, I can’t promise, but I’ll do my best.” We give ourselves that little “out” so we don’t look bad if we don’t follow-through. Or we get a “guarantee” that comes with an expiration date or a lot of fine print. But promises, real promises, don’t work like that. It’s a way of saying: “I mean it” or “I’ll do what I say I am going to do.”

76: Maintaining our balance is one of the essential keys to navigating our path. Today we are being asked to perform a balance check today in two areas: giving / receiving and spiritual / material. There are times when we get so preoccupied in either (or both) areas and we become distracted. The balance between giving and receiving requires that we allow ourselves to receive and at the same time acknowledge the blessings that come to us. The balance between spiritual and material is equally important. By acknowledging the richness of our own spiritual nature material “things” lose their importance. They become nice to have but they no longer rule our lives. Achieving and maintaining balance in these areas is one of the keys to good spiritual health and overall happiness. Remember, that if our scales are tipped one way or the other it zaps our energy levels and our ability to focus. The Angels are reminding us today that “When things are balanced your journey and the flow of life is easier. It allows you to be grounded and more at peace.”

We all worry, it’s just human nature. On Friday we talked about time and how we often waste it on things we shouldn’t. Worry is one of those things. It’s a good thing to acknowledge the fears and concerns that cause us to worry. But it’s not a good thing to get stuck in them. I like to equate worry to a whirlpool because it’s easy to get sucked in and quite often hard to get out of. Remember that the things we worry about often work themselves out if we simply set them aside. Have faith in yourself and in your abilities to make things work out.

75: Yesterday we talked about making choices that can have an impact on our life path. Today we are being reminded that success comes when we follow our own lead instead of being led by others. Remember that our Sacred Tool of intuition is a divine gift and that by using the information you receive you will increase your self-reliance. Choices also equal change. These changes can be small and simple or big and potentially life-altering. Remember that the Universe is always working behind the scenes to make things happen. Our job is to stay focused and be willing to make the choices that will best help us on our path. Our paths never come to a dead-end and if it feels that way then it’s time to grab your faith and confidence and choose a new direction or grab your courage and blaze a new trail. By building your path as you go you are setting the groundwork for success!
