Thought For The Day: Oct. 26, 2020 “Me, Myself & I”

Happy Monday,

You are complete without anyone else. While it’s good to have relationships and friends it’s more important to have a stand alone relationship with yourself. It boosts your confidence and self esteem. This doesn’t mean that you need to be lonely. It simply means that you know your wants and needs are important and you can take care of yourself. Today is a reminder to always honor your own truth and be your own person.

EarthSky News: Watch Capella flashing red and green

This evening, check out one of the flashiest stars in the sky. It’s so bright that every year in northern autumn, we get questions from people in the Northern Hemisphere who see a bright star twinkling with red and green flashes. “My soul is the bridge between spirit and body and, as such, is a uniter of opposites. …Without soul at center, I would either transcend into spirit or become mired in matter.”
— Marion Woodman

Ram Dass talks of how his first spiritual goal was to be rid of his physical existence. He came to understand, though, that our spirituality lies in bringing higher consciousness to our world of form. When we can do so, we can delight in all aspects of creation.

Soul exists in the balance of spirit and matter. For a soulful life, we pay attention to both, seeing spiritual qualities in material forms. As our awareness grows, we begin to use consciousness to influence and create form. It’s through form that our spirit expresses.

Films
“When you’re making a movie, you can’t think anybody will ever see it. You’ve just got to make a movie for the values it has. The greatest films were made because someone really wanted to make them. And, hopefully, the audience will show up, too.”

-Clint Eastwood

I am a huge movie fan! I go to see lots of different types of movies, not just the big blockbusters. It is really an incredible art form, to tell a story with words and pictures, to evoke emotion, to entertain. There is a movie that is now on DVD called “What the Bleep Do We Know?” This is definitely not your standard action-adventure flick, though it is filled with lots of action and adventure. It’s about Life! It’s about Consciousness. What got me is that so many of the concepts in the film are really big concepts, and somehow the filmmakers managed to present them in such a way that the audience is just riveted. It’s part documentary, part story, part animation, and totally worthwhile. It’s clear that the filmmakers felt that this was an important movie to make, and that’s why they did it. Not to sell tickets, or get this huge box-office, but to express what they felt were important things for people to talk about. This is a great way to live our lives, to be in our “dharma” – do what you need to do, what you feel is important to do, not for the applause, or the critics, or the money, and see what happens.

“We know too much and feel too little. At least, we feel too little of those creative emotions from which a good life springs.”
— Bertrand Russell

Many of the qualities that bring fulfilment in life are feelings, like love, joy, freedom and gratitude.

In our overly rational world, we tend to think about how we feel, which, of course, is not feeling at all — it’s thinking.

Honour your feelings and be willing to experience them. They give us valuable feedback about what is and what is not working in our lives. They are the signposts to meaningful inner work.

“With just a little education and practice on how to manage your emotions, you can move into a new experience of life so rewarding that you will be motivated to keep on managing your emotional nature in order to sustain it. The payoff is delicious in terms of improved quality of life.”

“Good movies make you care, make you believe in possibilities again.”

-Pauline Kael, 1968

Some movies are so big, so fabulous, so rich with story and action and setting and wardrobe. “Gone With the Wind” is like that. Wow. It’s absolutely breathtaking, and a true classic. And some movies are smaller, just a more personal story, that doesn’t need much more than the people involved to get the point across. “Rain Man” is that kind of a movie. In the film, Tom Cruise’s character discovers that he has an autistic brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. The journey, how these two get to know each other, and get to understand themselves, and what is important in life, is just beautiful. It strikes a chord because we all have relationships in our lives from which we can learn about ourselves and our connection to the world.

“It is permissible to take life’s blessings with both hands provided thou dost know thyself prepared in the opposite event to take them just as gladly. This applies to food and friends and kindred, to anything God givesand takes away… As long as God is satisfied do thou rest content. If he is pleased to want something else of thee, still rest content.”

Our life begins to change in magical ways when we open to the experience of life AS IT IS. With acceptance, we stop fighting what is happening. And this creates space, an opening for new relationships to unfold.

Explore unconditionally saying yes to the facts of life. Accept your past and where you are now. Unconditional acceptance is unconditional love and this is healing.

“Sometimes what seems like surrender isn’t surrender at all. It’s about what’s going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain ofnot being true to it is far, far greater.”

Every so often it’s necessary to take stock of where we are on our path. I call this a “self-check”. Ask yourself these questions:

*Am I happy in the direction my life is taking me?

*Am I doing things that I love or am I just going through the motions.

*Am I doing things for ME or am I doing things to make others happy?

Remember that your life is yours to create and that your wants and needs are important. if something isn’t working for you then take action and change it. You are the only one who can!

Elephant Journal: From Wind to Wind. {Poem}

There’s something about the change of seasons that creates a shift in the way I feel within my body.

Particularly in transitional seasons, like autumn and spring. Something they both have in common is that subtle wind of change that reminds us to let go and not remain static. The wind reminds us to move—it reminds us to breathe.

Inner Journey: USE DOWN TIMES TO GOOD ADVANTAGE

“The affairs of the world will go on forever. Do not delay the practice of meditation.”
— Milarepa

In our busy schedules, we can often complain that we don’t have time to meditate. But if we are sincere in our desire to go inside, we can create our own moments of stillness in the midst of our activity.

Stopped at a traffic light? Do some deep breathing. Waiting in line at the bank or grocery store? Repeat an uplifting word such as ‘love’ or ‘peace.’ Riding the bus to and from work? Value these times as an opportunity to close your eyes and go within or to say a little prayer.

“Wherever you go in the midst of movement and activity, carry your stillness within you. Then the chaotic movement around you will never overshadow your access to the reservoir of creativity, the field of pure potentiality.”
— Deepak Chopra

Heck, I’d think it was hard, too, if I forgot there was magic, didn’t believe in miracles, and thought I evolved from the ocean as an amoeba.

“Perhaps making movies is a step toward being able to move backward and forward and in and out of linear time.”

-Eleanor Coppola, 1979

There’s a quote that Yoda says in one of the Star Wars films that I use on my boys all the time: “Do or do not, there is no try.” They even gave me a Yoda action figure one year as a present because they said I love Yoda so much! It’s funny because it doesn’t matter where or when a story takes place, there are certain basic truths that resonate, certain experiences that are universal. Sometimes a movie can act as a mirror for us, and show us what our options are

Thought For The Day: Oct 21, 2020 “The Way It Works”

Happy Tuesday,

In order to reach our dreams and goals we have to make sacrifices. Some are small and easy to make but others….. well, not so much. The point is that in order to create the life we want we must be be willing to make sacrifices to make it happen. Take a look at the things you have accomplished and you will see that you did indeed let some things go to move forward.. Maybe it didn’t happen right away but a little way down the road you sacrificed something in payment. Just something to think about…..

Inner Journey: PURPOSE BRINGS JOY

“Our purpose is hidden in our joy, our inspiration, our excitement. As we act on what shows up in our life our purpose shows up.”
— James King

For many of us, our joy is truly activated when we get a bigger picture of who we are and why we are here.

Most of us need to enlarge our self-concept. We may see ourselves as a bag of bones but, in truth, we are eternal, multi-faceted and multi-dimensional spiritual beings having a human experience. It’s time to think of ourselves as much larger and grander than just a physical and emotional being confined in a body.

“There is no more important step you can take than to define your life’s purpose. It develops your sense of belonging to our universe.”

“Other than life experience, nothing left a deeper imprint on my formative self than the movies.”

-Letty Cottin Pogrebin, 1991

Some movies just stick with us. There are certain phrases, certain scenes, we always remember. And we can learn from the effect that the movies have on us. Remember how Dorothy, in “The Wizard of Oz,” just wanted to go home? And she was really there all the time. What a powerful message. And the Tin-Man wanted a heart so badly, and yet, it was there all along, he just didn’t recognize it. We can relate to these characters on their journey as we follow our own yellow-brick road.
