Inner Journey: WHAT IS LOVE?

“When mystics use the word love, they use it very carefully — in the deeply spiritual sense, where to love is to know; to love is to act. If you really love, from the depths of your Consciousness, that love gives you a native wisdom. You perceive the needs of others intuitively and clearly, with detachment from any personal desires; and you know how to act creatively to meet those needs, dexterously surmounting any obstacle that comes in the way. Such is the immense, driving power of love.”
— Eknath Easwaran

“Therefore, when I say that ‘I love,’ it is not I who love, but in reality Love who acts through me. Love is not so much something I do as something that I am. Love is not a doing but a state of being – a relatedness, a connectedness to another mortal, an identification with her or him that simply flows within me and through me, independent of my intentions or my efforts.”
— Robert A. Johnson

“When you are aware that you are the force that is Life, anything is possible. Miracles happen all the time, because those miracles are performed by the heart. The heart is in direct communion with the human soul, and when the heart speaks, even with the resistance of the head, something inside you changes; your heart opens another heart, and true love is possible.”
— Don Miguel Ruiz

Emotion
“Emotion is the moment when steel meets flint and a spark is struck forth, for emotion is the chief source of consciousness. There is no change from darkness to light or from inertia to movement without emotion.”

-Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)

What would life be like without emotion? I would think it would be rather dull and boring. One way we judge a good movie is if it engages our emotions. Do we care about the characters? Are we caught up in the action? Life is like that, too. We remember moments by the emotions we feel at the time. The joy of holding a newborn baby. The despair over the loss of a loved one. The feeling of accomplishment after running a marathon. These emotions show us that we are alive

Inner Journey: THE PATH TO WHOLENESS

We think that God has blessed us if we don’t have too many troubles. In fact, religions have erroneously taught us that pain is punishment for our sins. We often ask, “What have I done wrong?” when things do not go the way we want.

Yet, to become ourselves in the truest and deepest sense, we must face our own duality, which of course includes facing our darkness. As souls we strive for wholeness, not for perfection.

At first, we really don’t know what is going on. We just find life difficult, challenging and often painful. Eventually, after much experience and reflection, we start to find meaning in it all. Eventually, we gladly accept the means whereby we can do the Soul work we have come for.

As we become conscious as Souls, we walk our journey purposefully, embracing the reality of our earthly nature along with the truth of our divine nature.

“When we are conscious of our personal uniqueness and our universal nature we express ourselves creatively. In this way we fulfill our dreams and our life purpose.”
— Andrew Schneider

_______________

A Note from the Universe

If, when you lay your head upon your pillow tonight, you could choose to slip into a dream dimension where time would literally expand, so much so that you could live out an entire other lifetime within it as a person “designed” by you from head to toe, even choosing your name and who your parents would be.

Where every single day you’d be pushed on to greatness, every single challenge would invite you to become more, and all of your dreams could come true.

Where, no matter how things may ever seem, you’d be bathed in love, surrounded by friends, safe and sound in your very own bed.

And where, upon waking, all that you loved and learned in that lifetime would remain with you forever, and all that scared and threatened you would only have prepared you for happily-ever-after.

Would you choose to go there? On the condition that it felt like your “real life”?

Of course you would. I know you.

Which begs the questions, “How do you know, then, this isn’t that dream? And, who, exactly, is now dreaming they’re you?”

Howling at the moon,

The Universe

Emotion

“It is the emotion which drives the intelligence forward in spite of obstacles.”

-Henri Bergson (1859-1941)

It has been said that necessity is the mother of invention. But what creates the necessity? Some human emotion that cries out for attention. And then to satisfy that need, our intelligence kicks into high gear. When we want something really badly, we somehow figure out a way to get it.

Inner Journey: SPIRITUAL PATHWAYS

“In any way that men love me in that same way they find my love: for many are the paths of men, but they all in the end come to me.”
— Song of God, Bhagavad Gita

Spirit – the life force – exists in everything. It follows, then, that ANY path, any encounter is spiritual if we have the awareness to see it as such. Going deeper, going higher, emptying, connecting, believing or disbelieving, bouncing off the bottom, experiencing the heights, in pain, in ecstasy ….

Too often, we search afar for our own purpose when it is in our lives all the time, waiting for us to express it more openly. Bring greater awareness to each encounter and situation in life. Tune in to what you are inspired to do, who you are inspired tobe. Your answers are waiting for you to pay attention – every moment!

Inner Journey: ACCEPT CHANGE

“We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning; for what in the morning was true will in evening become a lie.”
— C.G. Jung

Life continually evolves. We’re always moving into new experiences, new possibilities. This constant change unsettles the personality, which finds security in stability. But with life always in flux, that security is an illusion. We experience pain by tryingto hold on to things that are not solid.

Life becomes joyful when we can open to the constant flow and ride freely with it. This requires us to let go of the need to control. We need to learn to trust.

“Can it then be that what we call the ‘self’ is fluid and elastic? It evolves, strikes a different balance with every new breath.”
— Wayne Muller

“The knock at the door tells the character of the visitor!”

-T.K.V. Desikachar, (Patanjali’s Yogasutras: An introduction) 1987

Once again, a version of “actions speak louder than words.” Interesting! How do we approach people? What is the first impression we give? I’ve seen a lot of courtesy go flying out the window with some e-mails! People are in a rush, they impulsively hit “send” and the ripples are felt throughout cyberland. Think about that “knock at the door” and how we can let others know that it is okay to let us in.

There may be moment or two when you feel responsible for everything in the world and like it’s your duty to take care of everyone. Relax, let this wash over you, and let it go. It’s not a burden so much as a demonstration of how connected you are to the people and things in your own life, and how much you care. That’s a good thing.

Inner Journey: INTUIT AND DO IT

“If doubt is challenging you and you do not act, doubts will grow. Challenge the doubts with action and you will grow. Doubt and action are incompatible.”
— John Kanary

To reap the greatest benefits from intuition, we need ACTION. Be in motion. Act as if your highest expectations have already happened. Be in front of more opportunities and people. Let go of any blocks or attachments. Create mental space and physical space. Plan your work and work your plan.

Miracles rarely happen by doing nothing. Most miracles happen through other people.

What actions can you take that will move you towards your goals?

“Never forget that life can only be nobly inspired and rightly lived if you take it bravely and gallantly, as a splendid adventure in which you are setting out into an unknown country, to meet many a joy, to find many a comrade, to win and lose many a battle.”
— Annie Besant

“Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

This is actually a very spiritual concept. Courtesy is more than just manners – it’s kindness. It’s showing both respect and appreciation for our fellow human beings. The way the world is today, being courteous can be a challenge at times. We get impatient, and frustrated, and short-tempered. But that’s when it’s time to take a breath and remember the wise words of Emerson, there is always time enough for courtesy.

Inner Journey: CALM THE MIND

“All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.”
— Blaise Pascal

Meditation calms our minds and makes it easier for us to pay attention to the reality around and within us. Meditation breaks through the masks that have built up as our identity. It helps us see through our defences and connect with unacknowledged and unloved aspects of ourselves. It opens us to higher mind and the voice of intuition.

We can consciously choose meditation as a way to become more aware of who we truly are. If we don’t take the initiative to open to our authentic selves, we can be certain that deep challenge and pain from life experience will push us to awaken.

“Meditation helps me feel the shape, the texture of my inner life. Here, in the quiet, I can begin to taste what Buddhists would call my true nature, what Jews call the still, small voice, what Christians call the holy spirit.”
— Wayne Muller

“In a world filled with noise, we need to quiet ourselves to hear God’s voice.”

Inner Journey: FREE TO CHOOSE

“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”
— Sigmund Freud

In his book Nobody’s Victim, Christopher J. McCullough explains, “In order to live your freedom, you must first accept reality. ‘These are the choices, and given those choices, which do I choose?’ Whether the option you select is pleasant or painful does not alter the fact that, given reality, this is your preference.

“To live your freedom, it is helpful to stop and ask yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and then notice whether, given the options, you are choosing what you really want, or whether you want to choose something else…. Sometimes the exercise of freedom involves naming your poison — all choices may lead to outcomes that are in some way painful. But the real pain is that of feeling powerless — denying your freedom.”

“Freedom is man’s capacity to take a hand in his own development. It is our capacity to mold ourselves.”

A citizen of the world. Yes! We are all in this together – no boundaries, no territories. We owe it to each other to show courtesy. In this way we are recognizing our heart connection. And our courtesy needs to extend to our friends and family, as well as strangers. Sometimes we take for granted that our family sits at the table with us and we don’t think about our behavior. Inner Journey: IT’S A MATTER OF BALANCE.

“My soul is the bridge between spirit and body and, as such, is a uniter of opposites. …Without soul at center, I would either transcend into spirit or become mired in matter.”
— Marion Woodman

Ram Dass talks of how his first spiritual goal was to be rid of his physical existence. He came to understand, though, that our spirituality lies in bringing higher consciousness to our world of form. When we can do so, we can delight in all aspects of creation.

Soul exists in the balance of spirit and matter. For a soulful life, we pay attention to both, seeing spiritual qualities in material forms. As our awareness grows, we begin to use consciousness to influence and create form. It’s through form that our spirit expresses.

“Walk in balance with one foot in your spiritual understanding and one foot in your physical world of accomplishment.”
— Lynn V. Andrews

A Note from the Universe

One of the most stringent conditions all angels must meet, other than double-advanced harp playing and skydiving abilities (not necessarily at the same time), is that they must not allow themselves to feel hurt or rejected by the choices made by others, no matter how much they’ve done for them nor how great their love.

Yeah, WOW.

Films
“When you’re making a movie, you can’t think anybody will ever see it. You’ve just got to make a movie for the values it has. The greatest films were made because someone really wanted to make them. And, hopefully, the audience will show up, too.”

-Clint Eastwood

I am a huge movie fan! I go to see lots of different types of movies, not just the big blockbusters. It is really an incredible art form, to tell a story with words and pictures, to evoke emotion, to entertain. There is a movie that is now on DVD called “What the Bleep Do We Know?” This is definitely not your standard action-adventure flick, though it is filled with lots of action and adventure. It’s about Life! It’s about Consciousness. What got me is that so many of the concepts in the film are really big concepts, and somehow the filmmakers managed to present them in such a way that the audience is just riveted. It’s part documentary, part story, part animation, and totally worthwhile. It’s clear that the filmmakers felt that this was an important movie to make, and that’s why they did it. Not to sell tickets, or get this huge box-office, but to express what they felt were important things for people to talk about. This is a great way to live our lives, to be in our “dharma” – do what you need to do, what you feel is important to do, not for the applause, or the critics, or the money, and see what happens.

Daily Tarot: The Hermit

It might be a busy day, but try to make some time for yourself. Any time you spend meditating or settling your mind will be time well spent. It doesn’t have to be spent sitting around and being idle all day. Staring pensively into that cup of tea for a few moments can be equally beneficial. Calm your mind, and your heart, and make it an at-peace day.

Inner Journey: WHAT ARE YOU FEELING?

“We know too much and feel too little. At least, we feel too little of those creative emotions from which a good life springs.”
— Bertrand Russell

Many of the qualities that bring fulfilment in life are feelings, like love, joy, freedom and gratitude.

In our overly rational world, we tend to think about how we feel, which, of course, is not feeling at all — it’s thinking.

Honour your feelings and be willing to experience them. They give us valuable feedback about what is and what is not working in our lives. They are the signposts to meaningful inner work.

“With just a little education and practice on how to manage your emotions, you can move into a new experience of life so rewarding that you will be motivated to keep on managing your emotional nature in order to sustain it. The payoff is delicious in terms of improved quality of life.”

Films
“Good movies make you care, make you believe in possibilities again.”

-Pauline Kael, 1968

Some movies are so big, so fabulous, so rich with story and action and setting and wardrobe. “Gone With the Wind” is like that. Wow. It’s absolutely breathtaking, and a true classic. And some movies are smaller, just a more personal story, that doesn’t need much more than the people involved to get the point across. “Rain Man” is that kind of a movie. In the film, Tom Cruise’s character discovers that he has an autistic brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. The journey, how these two get to know each other, and get to understand themselves, and what is important in life, is just beautiful. It strikes a chord because we all have relationships in our lives from which we can learn about ourselves and our connection to the world.

Inner Journey: THE POWER OF ACCEPTANCE

“It is permissible to take life’s blessings with both hands provided thou dost know thyself prepared in the opposite event to take them just as gladly. This applies to food and friends and kindred, to anything God givesand takes away… As long as God is satisfied do thou rest content. If he is pleased to want something else of thee, still rest content.”
— Meister Eckhart

Our life begins to change in magical ways when we open to the experience of life AS IT IS. With acceptance, we stop fighting what is happening. And this creates space, an opening for new relationships to unfold.

Explore unconditionally saying yes to the facts of life. Accept your past and where you are now. Unconditional acceptance is unconditional love and this is healing.

“Sometimes what seems like surrender isn’t surrender at all. It’s about what’s going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain ofnot being true to it is far, far greater.”
— Nicholas Evans

Fortunately, there is a beautiful movie, called “Gandhi,” which gives us some insight into his character.
