When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,
And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run
From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead;
That is the Grasshopper’s-he takes the lead
In summer luxury,-he has never done
With his delights; for when tired out with fun
He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed.

When I first started out in Paganism years and years ago, I was a completely broke teenager with incredibly little at my disposal – for much of that time, I didn’t even have a permanent residence. Reading all the 101 Intro to Wicca books, there were lists and lists of materials needed, how to make a proper altar, rare and exotic ingredients without which spells would be less effective.

Today’s Deity: Freya

Freya (Old Norse Freyja, “Lady”) is one of the preeminent goddesses in Norse mythology. She’s a member of the Vanir tribe of deities, but became an honorary member of the Aesir gods after the Aesir-Vanir War. Her father is Njord. Her mother is unknown, but could be Nerthus. Freyr is her brother. Her husband, named Odr in late Old Norse literature, is certainly none other than Odin, and, accordingly, Freya is ultimately identical with Odin’s wife Frigg (see below for a discussion of this).

Inner Journey:

FOLLOW YOUR OWN PATH

“Life is complex. Each one of us must make his own path through life. There are no self-help manuals, no formulas, no easy answers. The right road for one is the wrong road for another … The journey of life is not paved in blacktop; it is not brightly lit, and it has no road signs. It is a rocky path through the wilderness.”
— M. Scott Peck

We each have our own pathways to develop both personally and spiritually. They are based on our character and past experiences. No one else can identify our paths for us. Tune in to your inner guidance system and follow its direction.

“What every man needs, regardless of his job or the kind of work he is doing, is a vision of what his place is and may be. He needs an objective and a purpose. He needs a feeling and a belief that he has some worthwhile thing to do. What this is no one can tell him. It must be his own creation.”

Independence

“No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings.”

-William Blake

I guess this is another way of saying “Go for it!” This makes me think of my favorite book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. Jonathan was certainly independent. He lived by his own rules, he learned and grew beyond the expectations of society, because he felt compelled to do so. He followed his heart, and he later became a teacher, passing his wisdom on to younger generations seeking inspiration. Why be content to walk, or even run, when it is in us to soar? We get to make the choice because we are independent thinkers.

IT’S A MATTER OF BALANCE.

“My soul is the bridge between spirit and body and, as such, is a uniter of opposites. …Without soul at center, I would either transcend into spirit or become mired in matter.”
— Marion Woodman

Ram Dass talks of how his first spiritual goal was to be rid of his physical existence. He came to understand, though, that our spirituality lies in bringing higher consciousness to our world of form. When we can do so, we can delight in all aspects of creation.

Soul exists in the balance of spirit and matter. For a soulful life, we pay attention to both, seeing spiritual qualities in material forms. As our awareness grows, we begin to use consciousness to influence and create form. It’s through form that our spiritexpresses.

“Walk in balance with one foot in your spiritual understanding and one foot in your physical world of accomplishment.”

Independence

“What is independence? Freedom from all laws or bonds except those of one’s own being, control’d by the universal ones.”
-Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

It shows great spiritual maturity to be independent, to know that universal laws prevail. There’s a self-referral that goes on with true independence. We answer to ourselves. We don’t need the written out, voted and agreed on laws to guide our behavior- we know the right thing to do, and we do it. It doesn’t need to be written in a book, it’s written in our hearts.

CO-CREATION STARTS WITH IMAGINATION

“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.”
— Decouvertes

“The man who has no imagination has no wings.”
— Muhammad Ali

Imagination is a tool of the soul. Our imagination gives us the opportunity to ‘try on’ new qualities and perspectives in our life. Through imagination, we can explore our past, problems, patterns, processes, plans, perceptions, principles, passions andpurpose to uncover new possibilities.

Without imagination, we stay stuck in the realm of the material, the past, the superficial and the literal. We remain one-tracked, instinctual and one-dimensional.

Our imagination comes from the soul, subconscious and senses. Only through our imagination can we become multidimensional, experience more love, create more beauty, manifest more results, change our conditions, rewrite the past, and connect with divinity, purpose and others.

BRING AWARENESS TO YOUR GENEROSITY

“Generosity lies less in giving much than in giving at the right moment.”
— Jean De La Bruyère

While it’s important to give, it’s also essential that we not give more than we can afford. Only you can determine the appropriate amount of time or money you can give away, but it should not cause you hardship. We need to respect our own needs as well as the needs of others.

When do you give more than you can afford?

“Generosity is another quality which, like patience, letting go, non-judging, and trust, provides a solid foundation for mindfulness practice. You might experiment with using the cultivation of generosity as a vehicle for deep self-observation and inquiry as well as an exercise in giving.”

Independence

“The first of earthly blessings, independence.”

-Edward Gibbon (1737-1794)

Independence is a big word, and one that held a lot of meaning for our forefathers who wrote the Declaration of Independence 227 years ago. It seems like a long time ago, but then it’s so relatively recent compared with some of these quotes we read here, some dating back thousands of years. I remember when our country celebrated it’s bicentennial in 1976. In my hometown, Palo Alto, California, all the fire hydrants were painted red, white and blue to celebrate! I was just a little kid then, so I don’t think I really understood the significance of that day. But I do now. Independence is indeed a blessing.

They only have to allow you to do what feels best to you – and you to them

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR TODAY?

“Most people are so busy knocking themselves out trying to do everything they think they should do, they never get around to do what they want to do.”
— Kathleen Winsor

When we clearly set an intention, our conscious and subconscious minds mobilize to help us meet that intention. At the start of each day, thoroughly review what commitments you have made to others for the day, and decide what commitment(s) you will make for yourself.

What can you do today that will move you one step closer to your personal goals? Own your power to choose to meet your own needs. After all, we are much better able to help others when our own needs are met. And at the end of the day, when you’ve honoured your commitment to yourself, acknowledge your success.

Independence

“I’ve lived a life that’s full
I’ve traveled each and ev’ry highway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.”
-Paul Anka “My Way” (song, 1969)

When Frank Sinatra sang this song, didn’t you believe him? He sang it like he meant it, and I think he really did! It’s important for us to be able to look back on our lives and reflect on our independence. Every decision we’ve made, right or wrong, has been ours alone, and we need to take responsibility for that. I, for one, am doing it “my way!”

Inner Journey:

BE AWARE OF YOUR THINKING

“There is a thought in your mind right now. The longer you hold on to it, the more you dwell upon it, the more life you give to that thought. Give it enough life, and it will become real. So make sure the thought is indeeda great one.”
— Ralph Marston

Most of our self-talk comes unconsciously from our subconscious. Yet every thought that exists in our subconscious got there through a conscious decision to accept that thought.

We need to become conscious of our self-talk so we can at will choose to replace negative beliefs with positive ones. We have the power to choose an identity we love, but we need to do the work. The process of changing our subconscious beliefs requires awareness, diligence, consistency and repetition.

“Man is made or unmade by himself. In the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace.”

Intuition

“I go by instinct… I don’t worry about experience.”

-Barbra Streisand

This is such a powerful concept. Look at how this relates to the work community. One resume may be loaded with experience, while another has just the bare bones. Is that more important than the impression the job candidate makes in the interview? When we meet someone face to face we get a “feel” for how we can relate to that person, how we would like to be around that person every day in the work environment. These are the kinds of things that can’t be put down on paper, we have to use our instincts.

Wise Woman Herbal: Lammas by Susun Weed

The least known of the eight major Pagan holy days is Lammas, celebrated on the first of August. (The other primary holy days are the Summer and Winter Solstices, the Spring and Fall Equinoxes, and the Cross Quarter Days of Imbolc and Beltane.)

Lammas, or “Loaf Mass,” is the Feast of the First Harvest, the Feast of Bread. This Holy Day honors the women who created agriculture and bred the crops we cultivate, especially the grains, or corn. In the British Isles, celebrants make corn dollies from the last of the newly-harvested wheat.

Lammas. Probably one of the most overlooked of Pagan and Heathen holidays – and it’s not the only option this time of year. TRUST IN ABUNDANCE

“Once, when we were discussing a world peace project with my teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, somebody asked him, ‘Where is all the money going to come from?’ And he replied without hesitation, ‘From wherever it is atthe moment.'”
— Deepak Chopra

How can you open to greater trust that you’ll always have what you need?

Fear, doubt, anxiety and disbelief all serve to repel abundance from us. Faith, love and gratitude for the gifts of our lives keep energy and abundance flowing. The more we trust in our well being, the more it will be realized.

“Manifestation is an act of trust. It is the soul pouring itself out into its world, like a fisherman casting a net to gather in the fish he seeks; with each cast properly made, we will bring what we need to us, but firstwe must hurl ourselves into the depths without knowing just what lies beneath us.”

Intuition

“Instinct is the nose of the mind.”
-Madame De Girardin

I love this! The nose doesn’t “think” – it just senses- our brain then translates what scent is coming through. Our instinct is the same way- sometimes we don’t know why we know something, but we just do. So rather than try to translate or decipher this information in the brain, it might do us well to just go with it every once in awhile, and find out just where our intuition leads us.

Depending on where you live worldwide, the new moon falls on July 31 or August 1, 2019. Same new moon … different time zones. Thus this new moon is either the second of two July 2019 new moons. Or it’s the first of two August 2019 new moons. Either way, the second of two new moons in one calendar month is sometimes called a Black Moon. Here, in the United States, the Black Moon – July’s second new moon – falls on July 31. In the world’s Eastern Hemisphere, a Black Moon falls in late August.

Patheos Pagan: 3 Pagans And A Cat: The Deep Connections We Make With Plant Allies

This morning, as I sipped tea and prepared for my day, the buzzing of the weekly weed whacker hit my ears. I’ll be honest, I’m not comfortable with the sound because of the plant allies which surround my house. There have been “accidents” in the past and the loss of a few plant allies as a result.

Today’s Deity: Greek God Momus

Momus was the god of many things including satire, mockery, poets, writers, blame, and criticism. His constant mockery of the Olympians eventually resulted in his exile from Mount Olympus by order of Zeus. Momus is said to be the son of Nyx (Night) and Erebus (Darkness). He is also the twin of Oizys, the misery goddess.

Inner Journey:

WHAT BLOCKS CONNECTION?

“People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.”
— Joseph F. Newton

We experience soul when we really connect with life — when we stop and consciously experience what is happening.

We lose soul with:
• resistance – to anyone or anything
• superficiality – we avoid depth of experience
• control – we try to control the relationship
• selfishness – we remain self-centered.

Each of these attitudes fosters separation rather than connection. Once again, soul lives in relating.

Take time to become aware of, and perhaps journal on how you relate to other people and things in your life.

“We have to decide for ourselves what’s nourishing to our souls, and do those things over others.”
— Thomas Moore

“By learning to contact, listen to, and act on our intuition, we can directly connect to the higher power of the universe and allow it to become our guiding force.”

-Shakti Gawain

Where is this intuition coming from? Whether it’s from the deep recesses of our memory or from the intelligence of the universe, it is worth listening to. Maybe we can’t explain intuition, but we can see the benefits of it at work in our lives.

MBG: The 15 Spiritual Practices That Helped Me Overcome Low Self-Esteem

As a teenager, my family moved from Brazil to a town in Florida, and my new high school didn’t have any role models that looked like me. My skin was a little darker than most, I had cystic acne, I didn’t speak English fluently, I was wearing clothes from a totally different culture, and at some point, I was even wearing blue eye contacts thinking that this would help me to fit it. I based my self-esteem on external circumstances and held on to the belief that if I looked like other people, I would finally feel confident. I would belong.

EarthSky News: Orion the Hunter returns before dawn

Around late July or early August, if you’re up early and have an unobstructed view to the east, be sure to look in that direction in the hour before dawn. You might find a familiar figure – a constellation that always returns to the sky around this time of year. It’s the beautiful constellation Orion the Hunter – recently behind the sun as seen from our earthly vantage point – now ascending once more in the east before sunrise.

Patheos-Pagan: You Can’t Change the Date of Halloween, But . . . .

The internet has a tendency to make mountains out of molehills, and such is the case with a recent petition to “change the date of Halloween” from October 31 to the last Saturday of October. Currently this petition has 100,000 “signatures” on Change.org, a rather insignificant number considering that there are 350 million people living in the United States. This petition is pretty stupid for reasons I’ll outline below, and so is the over-reaction to it that I’m seeing online.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

“He who has achieved success has worked well, laughed often and loved much.”
— Elbert Hubbard

“Too often, people focus only on results. But getting results without learning something or without having fun are incomplete. So is having fun without getting the results, or having fun without learning something new to help and empower you in the future. Accomplishment is all three: the result, personal growth and having fun.”
— Peter L. Hirsch

“There are many aspects to success; material wealth is only one component. …But success also includes good health, energy and enthusiasm for life, fulfilling relationships, creative freedom, emotional and psychological stability, a sense of well-being, and peace of mind.”
— Deepak Chopra

“Trust your hunches… Hunches are usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level. Warning! Do not confuse your hunches with wishful thinking. This is the road to disaster.”

-Dr. Joyce Brothers

We can look at intuition either scientifically or spiritually, but it is there, and significantly so, nonetheless. When we get our minds involved, analyzing our hunches, that’s where we get ourselves into trouble. We think too much, when sometimes we need to just “feel.”

ThoughtCo: All About Lammas (Lughnasadh)

These are the dog days of summer, the gardens are full of goodies, the fields are full of grain, and the harvest is approaching. Take a moment to relax in the heat, and reflect on the upcoming abundance of the fall months. At Lammas, sometimes called Lughnasadh, it’s time to begin reaping what we have sown throughout the past few months, and recognize that the bright summer days will soon come to an end.

Today’s Deity: Lugh, Master of Skills

Similar to the Roman god Mercury, Lugh was known as a god of both skill and the distribution of talent. There are countless inscriptions and statues dedicated to Lugh, and Julius Caesar himself commented on this god’s importance to the Celtic people. Although he was not a war god in the same sense as the Roman Mars, Lugh was considered a warrior because to the Celts, skill on the battlefield was a highly valued ability. In Ireland, which was never invaded by Roman troops, Lugh is called sam ildanach, meaning he was skilled in many arts simultaneously.

Inner Journey:

REAWAKEN YOUR CURIOSITY

“What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant intelligence of the child and the feeble mentality of the average adult.”
— Sigmund Freud

Why is this so?

Young children possess what Zen calls ‘beginner’s mind.’ They are awed and fascinated with the wonder of the world, open to discovering and experiencing new things. Anything is possible. Life is a great adventure.

For almost all of us, the systems that ‘educate’ us to be adults stifle our natural joy and curiosity. We lose touch with our innate appreciation of life. We forget how to dream.

The blessing is that with attention, patience and love, we can reawaken our sense of wonder. We can again dance with life.

“The mind WILL be free, or it will be dead.”

Intuition

“You must train your intuition – you must trust the small voice inside you which tells you exactly what to say, what to decide.”
-Ingrid Bergman

Jewel sings a song called “Intuition.” It’s gotten me thinking about intuition, instinct, hunches… it’s all the same thing. The lyrics in the song say: “Follow your heart, your intuition, it will lead you in the right direction.” Great advice- but like much great advice, do we always take it? I think we try to second guess ourselves too much. When Ingrid Bergman says we must train our intuition, I think she really means that we must train ourselves to listen to that voice, and hear what it has to say.
