ThoughtCo: 11 Pagan Fertility Deities of Beltane

Beltane is a time of great fertility—for the earth itself, for animals, and of course for people as well. This season has been celebrated by cultures going back thousands of years, in a variety of ways, but nearly all shared the fertility aspect. Typically, this is a Sabbat to celebrate gods of the hunt or of the forest, and goddesses of passion and motherhood, as well as agricultural deities. Here is a list of gods and goddesses that can be honored as part of your tradition’s Beltane rituals

Daily Good: Brink of Extinction

Anna Louisa first became interested in Faroese ponies because of a children’s book. She soon learned that these enchanting creatures, ponies by size but often called horses due to their strength, were almost extinct. Between 1850 and 1920 large numbers of them were exported from their home in the Faroe Islands. By 1960 there were only five left in the wild. Fortunately they have made a remarkable comeback due largely to “the lady with the horses.”

Nature soothes our stressed-out souls. We instinctively know nature is the best prescription, but new research is revealing how little time we need to set aside to reap the benefits.
In one new study, published April 4 in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, researchers tried to identify the most effective “dose” of nature within the context of normal daily life. As more doctors prescribe nature experiences for stress relief and other health benefits —

Integrity sounds like a moral issue, but it really isn’t. It’s just plain common sense.

Integrity means wholeness, completeness. A person with wholeness can focus their energies in one direction. A whole person achieves their life’s purpose without the dissipation of energies caused by internal conflicts. They get things done with ease, and then move on to the next activity which further pursues their sense of inner joy

The Minotaur, it was said, would only eat human flesh, and needed to be contained. So the king called Daedalus, the craftsman, and ordered him to build an unnavigable maze, one that no one could find their way through, which would hold the monster. CO-CREATION STARTS WITH IMAGINATION

“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.”
— Decouvertes

“The man who has no imagination has no wings.”
— Muhammad Ali

Imagination is a tool of the soul. Our imagination gives us the opportunity to ‘try on’ new qualities and perspectives in our life. Through imagination, we can explore our past, problems, patterns, processes, plans, perceptions, principles, passions and purpose to uncover new possibilities.

Without imagination, we stay stuck in the realm of the material, the past, the superficial and the literal. We remain one-tracked, instinctual and one-dimensional.

Our imagination comes from the soul, subconscious and senses. Only through our imagination can we become multidimensional, experience more love, create more beauty, manifest more results, change our conditions, rewrite the past, and connect with divinity, purpose and others.

“You see things; and you say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say, ‘Why not?'”
— George Bernard Shaw

“Reason can answer questions, but imagination has to ask them.”

USE YOUR BREATH TO RELAX YOUR BODY

“Breath is the link between the inner and outer worlds.”
— Alice Christensen

We live in very demanding times, and our health depends on our being able to relieve our bodies and minds from constant stress. Breathing with awareness can focus and concentrate our attention inside. This slows down our pace and eases the pressure, anxiety, anticipation and excitement that are common stress reactions.

At any time, you can consciously experience your breathing to help you concentrate your mind and relax your body. Compare how you feel after your session with how you felt before. Write about your experience in your journal.

“Controlled deep breathing helps the body to transform the air we breathe into energy. The stream of energized air produced by properly executed and controlled deep breathing produces a current of inner energy which radiates throughout the entire body and can be channeled to the body areas that need it the most, on demand.”
— Nancy Zi

Originality

“True originality consists not in a new manner but in a new vision.”

-Edith Wharton, The Writing of Fiction, 1925

Each of us has eyes through which we see the world, and no two visions are exactly alike. But because we are conditioned to go along with the crowd, our vision gets blurred, and starts to look like everyone else’s. When we close our eyes, tap into our Source, and let Nature’s creativity and intelligence flow through us, we can restore our vision and our originality. We allow our inner artist to shine through!

LIVE IN RELAXATION

“It would be glorious to see mankind at leisure for once. It is nothing but work, work, work.”

Is relaxation possible only when we’re not working? No. With awareness and practice, we can be relaxed no matter what we are doing. In fact, when we work in a relaxed state, our productivity increases as our effort decreases.

For true relaxation, we need to connect with our bodies — to consciously and intentionally become aware of tension and release it.

Originality

“Originality consists not only in doing things differently, but also in ‘doing things better.'”

-Edward C. Stedman (1833-1908)

I think that this is what inventors have in mind when they come up with all these original concepts. It’s all about progress, growth, building on what has been done before and expanding on what we have learned. And isn’t life like that, too? With human relationships, and our own spiritual growth, we want to “do things better” and improve ourselves and our circumstances. We read books, and take advice, but how we apply it is individual and original to ourselves.

Daily Good: Befriending Our Despair

Joanna Rogers Macy is an environmental activist, author, and scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology. In this short video she advises that pain alerts us to what needs attention. Pain is not the enemy of cheerfulness, but tells us there is suffering. When we face suffering, our hearts and eyes open to beauty. We are not alone in our despair and when we have the courage to speak of it, it cracks open so the love can be found. The key is not being afraid of the pain, not being afraid of the worlds suffering. If you arent afraid, nothing can stop you

Patheos-Pagan: Following Your Own Path to Paganism

Inner Journey:

HOW DO YOU WORK WITH ANGER?

“Character isn’t inherited. One builds it daily by the way one thinks and acts, thought by thought, action by action. If one lets fear or hate or anger take possession of the mind, they become self-forged chains.”
— Helen Douglas

How do you feel about anger, in yourself and in others?
How do you deal with it?

Anger is powerful energy. If we are afraid of this energy, we may attempt to deny or hide it. And when we lack control of the energy of anger, we impose it on other people or things.

The ways we react to anger usually reflect how we experienced anger as children and how our own anger when we were young was handled by the adults at the time.

In reality, anger, like any emotion, brings us information. It tells us how we feel about what is being experienced. If we receive anger’s message and learn more about ourselves, the energy will pass.

“Too often we underestimate how quickly our feelings are going to change because we underestimate our ability to change them.”
— David Gilbert

A Note from the Universe

Yes it’s true. There are so many things you don’t know. Things, quite frankly, that you can’t know. About the magic, the unseen, and the miraculous logistics that can so swiftly change a life. It’s enough to daunt even the hardiest of souls.

But, then again one needn’t learn the mysteries of the wind, to sail effortlessly around the world, either.

Actually, you got a pretty good deal.

Originality

“People are always talking about originality; but what do they mean? As soon as we are born, the world begins to work upon us, and this goes on to the end. What can we call our own except energy, strength, and will? If I could give an account of all that I owe to great predecessors and contemporaries, there would be but a small balance in my favor.”

-Goethe (1749-1832)

Some people say that there is nothing original anymore, that it’s all “been done.” But how can that be? There are infinite possibilities out there, even the “same thing” can be done in infinitely different ways. The originality comes from ourselves, and what we bring to the task at hand. We can be inspired from those whose work has come before, but we can never re-create it in exactly the same way.

Lore for April

April, the fourth month of the current Gregorian calendar and the second month of Spring’s rule, derives its name from Aprillis, the Latin name for the ancient Roman love goddess Aphrodite. Other reference sources give aperite, the Latin word meaning “to open,” as the origination of the month’s name.
The traditional birthstone amulet of April is the diamond, and the daisy and the sweet pea are the month’s traditional flowers.

April is shared by the astrological signs of Aries the Ram and Taurus the Bull, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities:
Aphrodite, Artemis, Astarte, Erzulie, Terra, Venus, and Ying-Hua.

EarthSky News: Acrux, brightest star in Southern Cross

Bluish Acrux, otherwise known as Alpha Crucis, is the brightest star in the constellation Crux the Southern Cross. It is the 13th brightest star in all the sky. Because it’s located far to the south of the sky’s equator, this star can’t be seen from much of North America. Observers north of central Florida or south Texas are out of luck. Observers in Hawaii sometimes tell us they’ve spotted it. You have to be in the Southern Hemisphere to see Crux in all its glory. Close your eyes and imagine that everything you are is enough. You don’t need to be better or different — you’re great just as you are. Can you experience the peace and contentment that owning that perspective brings?

Moving into such total acceptance does not mean that we stop growing. When we can accept who we are now, we open the doors to our own inspiration to do and be even more!

Transformation

“The sacred call is transformative. It is an invitation to our souls, a mysterious voice reverberating within, a tug on our hearts that can neither be ignored nor denied. It contains, by definition, the purest message and promise of essential freedom. It touches us at the center of our awareness. When such a call occurs and we hear it – really hear it – our shift to higher consciousness is assured.”

-David A. Cooper, 1994

In this passage, David Cooper writes about the shofar, the ram’s horn sounded in synagogue services during the Ten Days of Penitence. But there are a lot of different ways that ‘the sacred call’ may be expressed. The fact that we are pursuing our spiritual growth, that we are allowing ourselves to be more of who we really are, shows that we have heard that call! We know that life has meaning, and we are transforming our own lives to reflect that.

I hope your equinox was wonderful. It had such a beautiful quiet to it—though there had been such chaotic energy leading up to it, of course the difference was palpable.

The day before the equinox I saw (etherically) pink and lavender hitting the magnetosphere, looking like an aurora borealis/australis. Start building the awareness habit: STOP and PAY ATTENTION. Set an intention to become aware of how you automatically react to different things in your life.

For example, how do you react to the alarm clock, the shower, traffic, work colleagues and situations, your partner or children? How do you react to anger or fear in someone else? How do you react to your own anger or fear? Become a witness to your own life. Pay attention to how you do things.

CELEBRATE DIFFERENCES

“Souls don’t have races or sexes or religions. They are beyond artificial divisions.”
— Brian Weiss

Intolerance of differences always exists in people who don’t know who they are, people who don’t have a strong sense of their own authentic self, the soul within.

Intolerance is rooted in fear.

The basis for having a strong sense of self-esteem is to replace our unconscious idea of basic unworthiness with a conscious knowing of our fundamental inherent goodness. As Matthew Fox argues in Original Blessing, the notion of ‘original sin’ must be replaced with the truth of ‘original blessing.’

Being in touch with our essential goodness, we can see the essential goodness in others as well.

“Beliefs separate. Loving thoughts unite.”

Pythagoras taught us that the world is mathematically created and expresses itself through numbers. He believed the single digit numbers represent the nine cycles of life. Daily Good: Recording the Healing Sounds of Nature

“Through repeated, in-depth exposure to nature’s melodies, I soon developed a deep appreciation of their healing qualities and came to regard myself as a sound healer of sorts, with a focus on the voices of nature. I likened myself to an herbalist who goes into the forests and fields in search of medicinal herbs but I head into the wilds in search of immersive and atmospheric soundscapes that are transportive, relaxing, and that have a tonic effect on one’s body and mind.” Lang Elliott shares more from his decades of experience recording nature’s healing sounds.

Elephant Journal: New Moon in Aquarius: it’s Time to Declutter our Emotional & Spiritual Lives

t’s time to “spring-clean” our emotional and spiritual clutter this month.
It’s still winter in the northern hemisphere but nonetheless, this is a great month for some “spring-cleaning.”

MNN: The Inuit have a simple way of teaching their children how to control anger

It’s no surprise that, as a society, we often focus on ways to manage anger. We know it’s bad for us, and that rage-aholics aren’t long for this Earth. We also know it’s bad for the people who have to deal with that anger.
So we focus on ways to quell a seemingly ever-simmering ire that only wants to watch the world burn

These next several mornings – March 26-29, 2019 – look for the waning moon passing by Jupiter and then Saturn in the early morning sky. You’ll look south from Earth’s Northern Hemisphere, but from the Earth’s Southern Hemisphere, look high overhead or high in the northern sky.

Patheos-Pagan: Confronting Stereotypes and Prejudice Against Paganism

A question came in this month’s Conversations Under the Oaks that was more timely than anyone knew.
How do you educate someone when they try to ban all forms of Norse Paganism because they think every Norse Pagan has to be a Nazi or a white supremacist? As cute as the meme of “Odin didn’t die for the Nazis to steal his runes” is, it’s not going sway anyone who only sees Nordic runes or hears Odin or Thor when someone shoots up a Jewish school or shows up in rallies like Charlottesville

Inner Journey:

Slow down

“The soul requires duration of time — rich, thick, deep, velvety time — and it thrives on rhythm. Soul can’t be hurried or harried …. We may go through many events in the day and experience nothing because the soul has not had the opportunity to feel them from many different points of view.”
— Robert Sardello

Soul cannot exist when our connections in life remain superficial. An experience of soul requires that we take time to be fully present to the details of our lives.

Explore what happens when you take the time to STOP and PAY ATTENTION. When we choose to slow down and really experience the qualities of our lives, we get a whole new perspective on what living is all about.

“We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.”
— H. G. Wells

“The well of Providence is deep. It’s the buckets we bring to it that are small.”
— Mary Webb

A Note from the Universe

In the time that it takes you to read this short Note, you could have planted a new image in your mind (anything you like, ideally with an emotional charge); I could have reacted (realigning planets, people, and the sort), and the floodgates would’ve begun trembling violently as we’d have been drawn infinitely closer to manifesting the vision you’d chosen.

Fortunately, there’s still time.

Transformation

“You don’t go through a deep personal transformation without some kind of a dark night of the soul.”

-Sam Keen

Heavy, dark experiences change us. They shake us to our core and cause us to re-evaluate our lives and our values. So, it is understandable that a transformation can come out of that. And sometimes it works the other way around. Sometimes a transformation occurs – maybe we’ve been working on it for a long time but then suddenly there’s a shift – and we need some time and space to assimilate it into our consciousness. We need to see how we can fit our new selves back into our old lives. It can feel like a dark night of the soul – but it’s only temporary. The light shines through.

Spirit Library: Unfriend and Free

When someone unfriended me recently I was a little surprised because I thought they were being really immature. At our age (we’re both from the generation that pre-dates cell phones, internet, and social media) I would have thought that a conversation or two would have been appropriate. But it is so easy to unfriend someone and make them disappear from your life today.

A lightworker is a modern term that sprung up in the New Age community. One of the best definitions for what a lightworker is comes from Witchcraft elder Christopher Penczak.

Inner Journey:

SEEK UNION OVER SEPARATION

“Beliefs separate. Loving thoughts unite.”
— Paul Ferrini

Our ego focuses on how we are different from the rest of the world. Our soul lives when we experience how we are the same.

Any time you separate yourself from other people or from situations, you know your personality is in control. At such times, shift your perspective to build connection and you will move into soul.

As our picture of life becomes larger, more things make sense and we have a greater playing field for life to unfold – naturally.

“As a holistic being you shatter the illusion of your separateness and reveal your connection to everything. This empowers you in a way that the ego-driven self could never contemplate.”
— Wayne Dyer

A Note from the Universe

You know you have many gifts, extraordinary gifts. Gifts of perception, insight, and creativity. Gifts of preferences, leanings, and inclinations.

But there is one, ah yes, just one, that while often overlooked is the most sublime and profound of all, availing you of wonders beyond wonder, and the power to wonder some more.

It is, of course, to think. To choose a focus. To see the world however you like… and to experience it accordingly.

I mean, what else do you give someone who wants it all?

Transformation

“Transformation means replacing old values with new ones in the evolution of conscious life.”

-Kazimierz Dabrowski, 1964

Things change. That’s for sure! ‘Things’ change – and times change… but spirit remains the same. And our values, as we come to a higher consciousness, must necessarily change as we experience this. That’s evolution. We’re getting better as we grow!
