Tetraktys: A Wiccan Blessingway Ritual – How to Have a Spiritual Baby Shower

I have great news to tell: I am pregnant with my first child! So, last week, I celebrated my passage into motherhood with a ritual. I wanted something different from the traditional baby shower, that would be more meaningful to me. I did a little bit of research and I decided to have a Blessingway ceremony. In short, a Blessingway is a woman-centered ritual that celebrates the journey into motherhood

EarthSky News: Moon and Venus grace eastern morning sky

Late April and early May 2019 present the moon and the planet Venus adorning the eastern sky before sunrise. From most places worldwide, these two brilliant worlds can be viewed at dawn if you’re blessed with clear skies and an unobstructed horizon. After all, the moon and Venus rank as the 2nd-brightest and 3rd-brightest celestial bodies, respectively, after the sun. Unfortunately for far-northern latitudes, like Alaska, viewing the moon and Venus will be extremely difficult because the moon and Venus rise about the same time as the sun at those far northern latitudes

Understanding
“Those who understand only what can be explained understand very little.”

-Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916)

There is so much more to this world that what we can actually see and hear and feel. There is so much that is without explanation, but that is beyond explanation. There are unlimited possibilities all around us, at all times – how could we even venture to guess what they all could be? When we realize that our lives can open up to these possibilities, we allow understanding to pour in and nourish us.

Thought For The Day: April 29, 2019 “Wisdom”

Happy Monday ,

We often attribute wisdom to a persons age, however  that’s not always the case. Don’t assume that just because a person is older that they are wise. The truth is that some of the wisest people I know are the young. Age doesn’t matter. Weigh the words for yourself. If they have merit take them to heart. If they don’t then take what’s usable and discard the rest, or use none of it. Above all don’t be afraid to use your own wisdom because that’s what will get you the farthest.

ThoughtCo: The Magic of Crows and Ravens

Although crows and ravens are part of the same family (Corvus), they’re not exactly the same bird. Typically, ravens are quite a bit bigger than crows, and they tend to be a bit shaggier looking. The raven actually has more in common with hawks and other predatory birds than the standard, smaller-sized crow. In addition, although both birds have an impressive repertoire of calls and noises they make, the raven’s call is usually a bit deeper and more guttural sounding than that of the crow.

Amateur astronomers use star hopping to go from stars and constellations they know … to ones they don’t know yet. First, look for noticeable patterns on the sky’s dome. One very easy pattern to find at this time of year is the constellation Orion the Hunter. You’ll find it descending in the west after sunset. Orion is easy to find because it contains a very noticeable pattern of three medium-bright stars in a short straight row. These stars represent Orion’s Belt.

USE YOUR POWER TO CREATE

“I am a child of God. I came from the womb of creation.”
— Tao Te Ching

Our grand business in life is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand.”
— Thomas Carlyle

We each play a role in the bigger game of life. In this bigger picture, life plays with energy and matter to expand, create, express and evolve. It explores new possibilities, realizes them and then reaches for even more. Life continually transforms what is into something brand new.

We choose how actively we take part in this cosmic dance. We can become mere spectators to life if we get stuck in old ideas that have lost their energy for us.

How much passion do you feel for your goals? Are you still being creative in how you work with them?

“Embrace fully your capacity to create, to think in unlimited ways, and to pursue everything that you have been wanting. Be flexible, open and willing to let the new come to you. “This can be the most joyous, prosperous, and creative time of your life.”

Inner Journey:

FORGIVE THE HURTS

“Forgiveness will never fail to free you.”
— Jerrold Mundis

How do we forgive when we’re angry and hurt?

As a first step, we can be willing to truly feel our anger and hurt. Honouring our feelings by being fully present with them helps to release the feelings themselves.

And it helps to remember that people only hurt others when they themselves are in pain. When we can recognize the other person’s suffering, our heart can open in compassion. We can also remember that at some time or another, we too have hurt someone through our own unskilful action.

Only love can heal the rifts caused by a hurtful deed. Forgiveness holds immense power because it mends separation. It moves us towards the unity and love that lie at the core of our being. It is a fundamental part of the healing process.

“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.”

Effort

“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor.”

-Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

Yes! This is totally encouraging! In the choices that we make, we have the ability to change, and improve our lives! Where are we choosing to put our efforts? What endeavors have we chosen to pursue? I found another quote said: “Rowing harder doesn’t help if the boat is headed in the wrong direction.” (Kenichi Ohmae, 1989) If we happen to re-evaluate and decide that this particular endeavor has not rewarded our efforts in some way, we can choose again, change direction! And we take with us our experiences and newfound knowledge.

Coffey Talk: Free As A Bird

One of my very favorite books of all time is “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” by Richard Bach. This book was first published in 1970, and it has held up to the test of time, it is a true classic. If you’ve never experienced this beautiful story, it is a must-have for your home library. If you’ve read it before, read it again.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve read it, and gotten something more out of it each time. I have such an affinity for seagulls because of this wonderful little book! Jonathan is an example for each of us, to follow our dreams, to strive to do better, to be true to ourselves. The book includes amazing photography by Russell Munson.

While working on a talk about this book I discovered that Richard Bach recently found his original last chapter, which was never published! He has now added it to the “Complete Edition” version of the book.

Of course the most deceptive of all illusions is very likely space.

You know, that thing between “here” and “there” that would have you see yourself alone, instead of as the bridge between them.

That medium between you and the rest of the world that disguises your role in creating it.

You know, that veil through which the physical senses must explore your chiseled secrets.

See? Aliens are the least of your worries…

Effort

“You can’t always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes,
You just might find
You get what you need.”

-Mick Jagger and Keith Richards song, 1969

It usually takes something to motivate us to make that effort. It’s like we begin with the end in mind – that’s our goal, what we are working towards. But along the way, things might change. We certainly change and grow from the experience – and maybe that’s just what we really need. We can find some of the most amazing spiritual messages in our own music. Are we listening?

Thought For The Day: April 23, 2019 “Survival”

Happy Wednesday,

This quote is another that’s personal as it is I’m sure for many of you. There are so many reasons that we reach the “falling apart stage”. Just as there are so many reasons that we are able to pull ourselves out of it. This quote is  a reminder that we are stronger and more resilient than we often give ourselves credit for.

Elephant Journal:  What we Misunderstand about being an Empath.

Let’s talk about empathy, which, according to a recent NPR story, “The End of Empathy” (April 15, 2019, Hanna Rosin), is seemingly declining in younger generations.

Associate professor Sara Konrath from Indiana University has been tracking a trend, or a critical shift, whereby younger generations do not feel it’s their responsibility to “see the world from someone else’s perspective.”

Patheos-Pagan: The Stang

The Stang is adored by many modern Traditional Witches, myself included. It’s a tool whose use powerfully evokes a sense of connection to something old and primitive. In its simplest form, a forked staff, Witches use the Stang in various ways including representing the Horned One, aiding in spirit flight, and directing energy.

Inner Journey:

THE 4 D’S OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH

“Promise Yourself … to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. …To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.”
— Drawn from the Optimist Creed of the Optimist International Club

Reflect on this pathway for meaningful growth:

DISCIPLINE – To create change in our lives, we need to consistently focus on what we want.

DETACHMENT – Practice the art of detached observation. Let go of automatic defenses and patterns.

DISCERNMENT – Seek to discern the lower from the higher. What is self-serving and what is soul-inspired? Discernment carries no judgment. There are no goods and bads. Remain as a detached witness.

DHARMA “This is an East Indian word meaning “living your unique purpose.” How do you find meaning and fulfillment in ways that are natural to you? How do you best serve and contribute to the world?

“If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears.”
— Glenn Clark

Today’s Recipe: DIY Tea Astringent

Astringents are used to firm and tone the skin. They constrict the pores and create a protective layer of firm tissue to fight against natural elements. However, some astringents can be harsh due to their alcohol content, thus, drying the skin. So why not create your own astringent at home? Today’s recipe uses non-drying ingredients — witch hazel, lemon juice and, don’t be surprised – tea!

Effort

“Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory.”

-Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948)

Full effort is mindfulness. It’s being present in the moment, concentrating on the task at hand and not on the results. When we’re in that space where we’re putting in effort, doing our best, we lose track of time and experience the now. That’s a victory!

Thought For The Day: April 23, 2019 “Time”

Happy Tuesday,

This is an interesting quote and probably something we have all said at one time or another. I think we say “I don’t have time” to be polite. Words and truth are important and while we may be busy and our time may be limited it’s what we say that matters.  Instead of ” I don’t have time” how about “I’m not able to do that right now but let me see where I can fit that in.” If you really don’t want to do something, the truth is always best.
