ThoughtCo: Rosemary

Rosemary was well known to ancient practitioners. It was an herb known for strengthening the memory and helping the brain. Eventually, it also became associated with the fidelity of lovers, and was presented to wedding guests as a gift. In 1607, Roger Hacket said, “Speaking of the powers of rosemary, it overtoppeth all the flowers in the garden, boasting man’s rule. It helpeth the brain, strengtheneth the memorie, and is very medicinable for the head. Another property of the rosemary is, it affects the heart.”

We tell our children, lovers, and friends that we love them no matter what. But, is that true?
Unconditional love is affection without any limitations—or rather, love without conditions.
This term is sometimes associated with true altruism or complete love. There are many ways of describing unconditional love, but most will agree that it is that type of love which has no bounds and is unchanging.

Fireflies make summer magical, but there’s more to learn about these bioluminescent beauties

There are many wonders to behold in the animal world, but few offer such enchantment as that of a summer evening punctuated with the twinkle of fireflies. It’s a singular experience, like handfuls of Lilliputian stars tossed from the sky, falling to flit and hover among the grass and brambles. WHAT’S OFF BALANCE?

“To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious.”
— Samuel Butler

Spirit requires a balance of female and male energy, yin and yang, receptiveness and expression. Are you sensitive to intuition and inner guidance? Are you able to act on the guidance you receive? Seek to find a balance in being and doing in all areas of your life.

“The balanced energy is the birthing energy. I used to say that the birthing energy was all feminine — it’s not. You have to push and you have to be. It’s such a potent example of the dance of the feminine and masculine together, the dance that is the creative energy of life!”

Progress

“Progress has not followed a straight ascending line, but a spiral with rhythms of progress and regression, of evolution and dissolution.”

-Goethe (1749-1832)

Sometimes we need to take a few steps back in order to get a running start. We make mistakes, and as long as we learn from those mistakes, we progress, we grow. Eventually we get to a point where we can look back and see how far we’ve come. Then we can turn back around and see how far we have to go!

ASK YOUR BODY FOR ADVICE!

“The body has its own way of knowing, a knowing that has little to do with logic, and much to do with truth, little to do with control, and much to do with acceptance, little to do with division and analysis, and muchto do with union.”
— Marilyn Sewell

Are you aware of your body’s wisdom? Our bodies usually know us better than our minds do. If you have a decision to make, consult your body before making a final choice.

Reflect on an option before you and then pay attention to your body. Are you breathing deeply or barely at all? Are your muscles tense or relaxed? Is your energy blocked or flowing?

Your body knows what it likes and it feels good when it’s happy. As your body is the source of your vitality, your motivation, your inspiration and enthusiasm and most importantly, your intuition, it’s best to get that part of you on-side if you are venturinginto a new activity.

“When you are saying that you are happy and you are not, there will be a disturbance in your breathing. Your breathing cannot be natural. It is impossible.”
— Osho

“Our inner guidance comes to us through our feelings and body wisdom first — not through intellectual understanding. …The intellect works best in service to our intuition, our inner guidance, soul, God or higher power — whichever term we choose for the spiritual energy that animates life.”
— Christiane Northrup

Inner Journey:

THE GIFT OF JOY

“Joy is prayer – Joy is strength – Joy is love – Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls. She gives most who gives with Joy.”
— Mother Teresa

Some people unconsciously believe it’s not okay to feel more joyful than the people around them. Out of a mistaken sense of caring, they squelch their joy and tune in to the sadness of the one they are with.

In truth, joy is one of the greatest gifts we can give to people around us. Those who are unhappy need our joy, not our sadness.

“Never miss a joy in this world of trouble … that’s my theory! … Happiness, like mercy, is twice blest: it blesses those most intimately associated with it and it blesses all those who see it, hear it, touch it or breathe the same atmosphere.”
— Kate Douglas Wiggin

A Note from the Universe

Let’s say you live by a great, abundant, life-giving ocean, though at a very primitive time in history, and so you are very, very hungry. And let’s further say that you’re given a choice: a wading pond full of fish or fishing lessons; enough fish to last you for several weeks, or the skills to tap an unlimited supply. Which would you choose?

Ah-ha.

But, what if learning to fish meant multiple solo attempts to test out your new skills, during which you’d likely feel anxious, uncertain, and a little confused? And that while your instructor would never be far, doting over you like a mother does a young child, you’d forget this, and sometimes feel all alone. Would you still choose the lessons?

Oh, re-a-l-l-y?

Can you see me, now?

Progress

“Frozen food is not progress.”

-Russell Baker

Technology has offered us some amazing conveniences – but at what expense? Do we hole up with our computers rather than socialize with our fellow travelers? Do we make a habit of eating fast food rather than enjoying the wholesomeness of something freshly prepared at home? Where, for the sake of “progress,” have we gone awry? When we remember the lessons we have learned in the past and build on them, then we make progress. It’s not necessarily about making life “easier” but about experiencing the beauty that is already there.

We don’t have creeds because we don’t need them

Inner Journey:

REMEMBER YOUR SPIRITUAL SIDE

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”
— Soren Kierkegaard

Reminding ourselves often of our spiritual natures truly changes the quality of our lives. It helps us relax, slow down, lighten up, and generally find more space and joy in life.

When we get down on ourselves or life, we can pull back and ask, “How might my soul regard this situation? What am I being invited to experience?”

This shift in perspective helps us let go of the resistance that always comes with negativity. As energy once again begins to flow, our outlook brightens.

“Spirituality is the sacred center out of which all life comes, including Mondays and Tuesdays and rainy Saturday afternoons in all their mundane and glorious detail. … The spiritual journey is the soul’s life commingling with ordinary life.”
— Christina Baldwin

“It is not my business to think about myself. My business is to think about God. It is for God to think about me.”
— Simone Weil

APPLY WHAT YOU KNOW

“Knowledge of any kind … brings about a change in awareness from where it is possible to create new realities.”
— Deepak Chopra

As we evolve, we handle knowledge in different ways. We tend to move through these stages:
•We are unaware.
•We become aware of facts, data, information.
•We comprehend meaning from the facts.
•We can personally apply the information in our lives.
•We have wisdom – enlightened, we can lovingly apply our knowledge to world affairs.
•We live in truth.

How have you personally experienced a shifting of applying knowledge from one level to the next?

“More important than finding the teacher is finding and following the truth of the teaching….”
— Sogyal Rinpoche

“There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul.”

Self-Realization
“Spiritual living is a fulfillment from moment to moment, in which the outer person is in a state of living rapport with the inner being and becomes an extension thereof.”

-N. Sri Ram (1889 – ?) Thoughts for Aspirants, 1972

A lot of times we tend to separate our “outer life” from our “inner life.” Maybe we’re working at a job we hate just for the money, while our heart aches for something more. Or we can’t seem to find that certain relationship we’re longing. We can come up with all kinds of justifications for these things. But there’s always a solution. To fully integrate ourselves, we’ve got to make our outer life an extension, or an expression, of our inner life. We’ve got to develop that rapport spiritually within so that we understand how much power we have to create anything in our lives.

Novelist and essayist Eric Arthur Blair, pen name George Orwell, is perhaps best known for his prescient depictions of creeping totalitarianism and social injustice as captured in 1984 and Down and Out in Paris and London. Blair is also recognized as an avowed appreciator of the living world who intuitively understood nature’s role in transforming the human spirit in the aftermath of war: “I think that by retaining one’s childhood love of such things as trees, fishes, butterflies and to return to my first instance toads, one makes a peaceful and decent future a little more probable…” In his thought-provoking essay, Isaac Yuen explores the remarkable capacity for wonder and compassion that exemplifies Blair’s writing in “Some Thoughts on the Common Toad,” an ode to one of Earth’s most humble inhabitants

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.”

Where do you need to do some ‘out of the box’ thinking and living?

What aspect of your life has become routine? How might you bring new life to it? Do some outrageous dreaming! Then do something completely different today.

Self-Realization
“King Henry: Presume not that I am the thing I was;
For God doth know, so shall the world perceive,
That I have turn’d away my former self.”

-Shakespeare (1564-1616) Henry IV, 1597

I like this because Shakespeare says here “I have made the choice- I have chosen to change” – and that is such a powerful statement. We always have that choice. We can always “reinvent” ourselves. And when we mean it, it works! There are a lot of people in the media who are examples of this – the former “loose image” actress turned mother and Sunday school teacher – the former rock-n-roller who is now a gospel singer. Part of this is knowing who we are – and understanding that how the world perceives us, how we present ourselves, is totally up to us.

MBG: How To Make Your Midday Walk A More Mindful Experience, From A ‘Walking Professor’

To honor her new book, Afoot and Lighthearted: A Journal for Mindful Walking, I chatted with Whitehouse about why strolls can be so valuable in an academic setting and beyond. The conversation meandered like a good long walk tends to. Along the way, she shared why bringing a journal on a hike is a good idea, how to move without a destination in mind in a results-driven world, and how to make any walk a more mindful and meaningful experience. It left me wanting to drop everyone, leave my phone behind, and seek out the nearest trail.

Starlight Witch: You Don’t Have To Wait For The New Moon

Many people work with the cycles of the moon, growing their magic on the waxing moon and banishing on the waning moon. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can banish on the waxing crescent. You can even manifest on the third quarter moon. The moon’s energy will work with you if it can. However, if it’s not in alignment with your goals, it certainly will not oppose you.

Today’s Deity: Baba Yaga

In Russian folklore, Baba Yaga or Baba Jaga (UK: /ˌbɑːbə ˈjɑːɡə/; Russian: Баба Яга [ˈbabə jɪˈɡa]) is a supernatural being (or one of a trio of sisters of the same name) who appears as a deformed and/or ferocious-looking woman. In Russian fairytales Baba Yaga flies around in a mortar, wields a pestle, and dwells deep in the forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs. Baba Yaga may help or hinder those that encounter or seek her out and may play a maternal role and has associations with forest wildlife. According to Vladimir Propp’s folktale morphology, Baba Yaga commonly appears as either a donor, villain, or may be altogether ambiguous.
Andreas Johns identifies Baba Yaga as “one of the most memorable and distinctive figures in eastern European folklore,” and observes that she is “enigmatic” and often exhibits “striking ambiguity.” Johns summarizes Baba Yaga as “a many-faceted figure, capable of inspiring researchers to see her as a Cloud, Moon, Death, Winter, Snake, Bird, Pelican or Earth Goddess, totemic matriarchal ancestress, female initiator, phallic mother, or archetypal image”

CREATE CONSCIOUSLY

“No man has a chance to enjoy permanent success until he begins to look in a mirror for the real cause of all his mistakes.”
— Napoleon Hill

The law of karma is the law of cause and effect. It works unavoidably when there is no consciousness — when we are not present in the moment. When there is no consciousness, the past creates the future.

The law of Love supersedes the law of karma. It intervenes in the process by focusing in the present. In fact, one could say that Love is being fully present. When anything is initiated in Love in the present, the future of that reality will be purposeful, meaningful, loving and powerful.

“He who is false to present duty breaks a thread in the loom, and will find the flaw when he may have forgotten its cause.”
— Henry Ward Beecher

“In my beginning is my end.”

Today’s Deity: Taranis: The Thunderer
by Bill Blank
The name Taranis derives from the Celtic (or Indo-European) root ‘taran’ meaning thunderer or thunder. A bronze figurine was found in Le Chatelet, France and is dated to the 1st to 2nd century BCE. It shows a wise, patriarchal being holding a lightning bolt and a solar wheel. As one who grew up in the Western traditions, this figure is almost instantly recognizable as Jupiter, only the solar wheel giving away the fact that this is a Celtic and not a Roman figure…

Body

“If anything is sacred, the human body is sacred.”

-Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

The body really is such a miracle. It’s just beyond comprehension how all of our organs can work so effortlessly on our behalf to keep us up and running. We don’t have to think about breathing, or pumping blood – it just happens! Life is so precious. The body is its keeper. It’s up to us to nourish and nurture this sacred vessel so that we may wisely use our time on earth learning and growing. The more time that we’re here, the more time that we have to expand our awareness. Our bodies allow us to do that.
