EarthSky News: Moon and Spica on June 11 and 12

On June 11 and 12, 2019, use the waxing gibbous moon to find Spica, the brightest star in the constellation Virgo the Maiden. In fact, Spica is Virgo’s one and only 1st-magnitude star. Although the bright moon will wipe out a number of fainter stars from the canopy of night tonight, bright Spica should withstand the moonlit glare. If you have trouble seeing Spica, place your finger over the moon and look for a bright star nearby

Patheos-Pagan: Quick ways to Ground and Shield

The world seems like it’s spinning ever faster, and that people are spinning along with it. One of the first questions I ask someone who is feeling discombobulated (after checking their breathing and hydration levels) is: have you grounded and shielded? Most of the time, I get the bewildered, no?! And then we work quickly to get that done. It makes a difference in this harried world.

LIVING IN HARMONY

“Peace comes not from the absence of conflict, but from the ability to cope with it.”
— Unknown Source

Angeles Arrien says that life will be simple if we follow the four-fold way counselled by indigenous peoples:
1. Show up, being present with all four mental, emotional, physical and spiritual intelligences.
2. Pay attention to what has heart and meaning.
3. Tell the truth without blame or judgment.
4. Be open to outcome, not attached to outcome.

Words

“Words make another place, a place to escape to with your spirit alone.”

-Robert MacNeil

We all know what it feels like to get lost in a really good book. What magic there is in that! What a gift that is available to us, to be able to share our thoughts and feelings and experiences with each other – to express our concerns and joys. All this is possible because we have the words to do it. It doesn’t matter if it is the spoken word, or the written word – written on a computer or by hand – in block letters, a smothe cursive, or even Braille! Words help us to learn more about ourselves, and about each other.

If any problems arise today, they will probably come out of being careless about something simple and normally no trouble at all. Carelessness is the chief threat to having things go smoothly. Even if only small things are lost, broken, or need to be redone, it can make tomorrow even more of a mess than today might be. Pay attention to details, take your time and do your best.

Mawu (alternately: Mahu) is a creator goddess, associated with the sun and moon in Dahomey mythology. In some myths, she is the wife of the male god Lisa. Mahu and Lisa are the children of Nana Buluku, and are the parents of Xevioso.

MY WILL OR DIVINE WILL?

“It is important not to ‘need’ what you are calling to you but rather to have a certain detachment about it. Let it be all right if it doesn’t come, or if it comes in a different form than what you expect. After you have asked for something, surrender to whatever comes as being appropriate.”
— Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

“Acceptance says, True, this is my situation at the moment. I’ll look unblinkingly at the reality of it. But I’ll also open my hands to accept willingly whatever a loving Father sends me.”
— Catherine Marshall

“This business of hozho. The way I understand it … I’ll use an example. Terrible drought, crops dead, sheep dying. Spring dried out. No water. The Hopi, or the Christian, maybe the Moslem, they pray for rain. The Navajo has the proper ceremony done to restore himself to harmony with the drought. You see what I mean. The system is designed to recognize what’s beyond human power to change, and then to change the human’s attitude to be content with the inevitable.”

Words

“You can stroke people with words.”

-F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940)

What would we do without language? This is how we communicate. Words by themselves are so innocuous, but when we put them together, combine them together in such a way, they can be bitterly poisonous, or powerfully healing. Words can carry with them so much meaning. Through words we can express tenderness, and compassion.

Today’s Deity: Ptah

To understand who Ptah was, we need to go all the way back to the beginning of Ancient Egyptian times, even before 3000 BC, because Ptah was the creator of the physical universe. You may think of him as an artisan, the demiurge and crafter of all things. Wonder how he did all of this creating? Well, known to be quite willful, he just had to think about it. That’s right – first he conceived the ideas, then felt them in his heart. Once he spoke the words, life and things were created.

In The Season of the Soul: The Poetic Guidance and Spiritual Wisdom of Hermann Hesse, Ludwig Max Fischer, Ph.D., makes Hesse’s vivid, evocative poems on love, imagination, nature, the divine and the passage of time available in English. Through his commentaries, Fischer helps readers understand Hesse’s poetry and wisdom within the context of his life. Although Hesse, author of the novels Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, was popular with the counter-culture of the 1960’s, many readers are unaware of his poetry. Hesse, no stranger to the dark side of life, grew stronger from his struggles. Through his poetry, readers can draw on his words to discover a more meaningful life. In this commentary followed by Hesse’s poems, Fischer describes Hesse and his relationship with Nature.

THEN AND NOW

“Time is not a line, but a series of now points.”
— Taisen Deshimaru

We understand time as a continuum. Our memories link the moments of the past and our imaginations draw on the patterns of our memories to project the future.

If we leave the movies of the mind behind, time can only be experienced now — moment by precious moment. Open in awareness to what is happening right now. Appreciate all that is. Immerse yourself in the joy and wonder of every now and life will be a gift.

“The responsibility for both present and future is in our own hands. If we live right today, then tomorrow has to be right.”

Words

“The more perfect the understanding between men, the less need of words.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Have you ever noticed how, with a really good friend, the silences are completely comfortable? It’s as if you don’t need words to communicate. There’s an unspoken communication that allows space to just be. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express how we feel. If you’ve ever said “I love you more than words can say” you know how that feels! You can write songs and poems and letters, and somehow it just can’t quite sum up that feeling you get when looking into that person’s eyes, completely silent.

Progress

“I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it – but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.”

-Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809-1894)
To progress we must make the effort. We must forge ahead. We must put ourselves out there and be open to experiences that challenge us. We can start right where we are, by knowing where we want to go.

ThoughtCo: Rosemary

Rosemary was well known to ancient practitioners. It was an herb known for strengthening the memory and helping the brain. Eventually, it also became associated with the fidelity of lovers, and was presented to wedding guests as a gift. In 1607, Roger Hacket said, “Speaking of the powers of rosemary, it overtoppeth all the flowers in the garden, boasting man’s rule. It helpeth the brain, strengtheneth the memorie, and is very medicinable for the head. Another property of the rosemary is, it affects the heart.”

WHAT’S OFF BALANCE?

“To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious.”
— Samuel Butler

Spirit requires a balance of female and male energy, yin and yang, receptiveness and expression. Are you sensitive to intuition and inner guidance? Are you able to act on the guidance you receive? Seek to find a balance in being and doing in all areas of your life.

“The balanced energy is the birthing energy. I used to say that the birthing energy was all feminine — it’s not. You have to push and you have to be. It’s such a potent example of the dance of the feminine and masculine together, the dance that is the creative energy of life!”

Progress

“Progress has not followed a straight ascending line, but a spiral with rhythms of progress and regression, of evolution and dissolution.”

-Goethe (1749-1832)

Sometimes we need to take a few steps back in order to get a running start. We make mistakes, and as long as we learn from those mistakes, we progress, we grow. Eventually we get to a point where we can look back and see how far we’ve come. Then we can turn back around and see how far we have to go!

ASK YOUR BODY FOR ADVICE!

“The body has its own way of knowing, a knowing that has little to do with logic, and much to do with truth, little to do with control, and much to do with acceptance, little to do with division and analysis, and muchto do with union.”
— Marilyn Sewell

Are you aware of your body’s wisdom? Our bodies usually know us better than our minds do. If you have a decision to make, consult your body before making a final choice.

Reflect on an option before you and then pay attention to your body. Are you breathing deeply or barely at all? Are your muscles tense or relaxed? Is your energy blocked or flowing?

Your body knows what it likes and it feels good when it’s happy. As your body is the source of your vitality, your motivation, your inspiration and enthusiasm and most importantly, your intuition, it’s best to get that part of you on-side if you are venturinginto a new activity.

“When you are saying that you are happy and you are not, there will be a disturbance in your breathing. Your breathing cannot be natural. It is impossible.”
— Osho

“Our inner guidance comes to us through our feelings and body wisdom first — not through intellectual understanding. …The intellect works best in service to our intuition, our inner guidance, soul, God or higher power — whichever term we choose for the spiritual energy that animates life.”
— Christiane Northrup

Inner Journey:

THE GIFT OF JOY

“Joy is prayer – Joy is strength – Joy is love – Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls. She gives most who gives with Joy.”
— Mother Teresa

Some people unconsciously believe it’s not okay to feel more joyful than the people around them. Out of a mistaken sense of caring, they squelch their joy and tune in to the sadness of the one they are with.

In truth, joy is one of the greatest gifts we can give to people around us. Those who are unhappy need our joy, not our sadness.

“Never miss a joy in this world of trouble … that’s my theory! … Happiness, like mercy, is twice blest: it blesses those most intimately associated with it and it blesses all those who see it, hear it, touch it or breathe the same atmosphere.”
— Kate Douglas Wiggin

A Note from the Universe

Let’s say you live by a great, abundant, life-giving ocean, though at a very primitive time in history, and so you are very, very hungry. And let’s further say that you’re given a choice: a wading pond full of fish or fishing lessons; enough fish to last you for several weeks, or the skills to tap an unlimited supply. Which would you choose?

Ah-ha.

But, what if learning to fish meant multiple solo attempts to test out your new skills, during which you’d likely feel anxious, uncertain, and a little confused? And that while your instructor would never be far, doting over you like a mother does a young child, you’d forget this, and sometimes feel all alone. Would you still choose the lessons?

Oh, re-a-l-l-y?

Can you see me, now?

Progress

“Frozen food is not progress.”

-Russell Baker

Technology has offered us some amazing conveniences – but at what expense? Do we hole up with our computers rather than socialize with our fellow travelers? Do we make a habit of eating fast food rather than enjoying the wholesomeness of something freshly prepared at home? Where, for the sake of “progress,” have we gone awry? When we remember the lessons we have learned in the past and build on them, then we make progress. It’s not necessarily about making life “easier” but about experiencing the beauty that is already there.

Each of the Gods from the Hindu pantheon represent an archetype of the human condition and that of the enlightened mind. Hanuman is the archetype of our innate animalistic nature—the “monkey mind” that can be transcended by entering into the portal of the heart.

Wise Woman Herbal: Empower Yourself…
Seven Directions Movement Meditation
by White Feather

It was a warm summer evening on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in western New York when Grandmother Twylah,( we called her “Twy” back then around 1985) asked me to join her for a talk she would be giving at a place called Lilly Dale. I was happy to be her driver as I would often do at that time.

She invited me to sit up front and before I knew it she was introducing me to the audience and explaining to them I was going to teach them the Seven Directions Movement Meditation.

EarthSky News: A Dragon and a former pole star

Tonight, if you have a dark sky, you’ll be able to pick the constellation Draco the Dragon winding around the North Star, Polaris. The image at the top of this post shows Draco as depicted in an old star atlas by Johannes Hevelius in 1690. See the circle? That circle indicates the changing position of the north celestial pole over a cycle of 26,000 years

Modern Pagans have no creeds. The Charge of the Goddess comes close, but it’s still more about what Wiccans do than what Wiccans believe. And most polytheists see it as not particularly relevant to our traditions.

Inner Journey:

REMEMBER YOUR SPIRITUAL SIDE

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”
— Soren Kierkegaard

Reminding ourselves often of our spiritual natures truly changes the quality of our lives. It helps us relax, slow down, lighten up, and generally find more space and joy in life.

When we get down on ourselves or life, we can pull back and ask, “How might my soul regard this situation? What am I being invited to experience?”

This shift in perspective helps us let go of the resistance that always comes with negativity. As energy once again begins to flow, our outlook brightens.

“Spirituality is the sacred center out of which all life comes, including Mondays and Tuesdays and rainy Saturday afternoons in all their mundane and glorious detail. … The spiritual journey is the soul’s life commingling with ordinary life.”
— Christina Baldwin

“It is not my business to think about myself. My business is to think about God. It is for God to think about me.”
— Simone Weil

“Most people are like a falling leaf that drifts and turns in the air, flutters, and falls to the ground. But a few others are like stars which travel one defined path: no wind reaches them, they have within themselves their guide and path.”

Inner Journey:

APPLY WHAT YOU KNOW

“Knowledge of any kind … brings about a change in awareness from where it is possible to create new realities.”
— Deepak Chopra

As we evolve, we handle knowledge in different ways. We tend to move through these stages:
•We are unaware.
•We become aware of facts, data, information.
•We comprehend meaning from the facts.
•We can personally apply the information in our lives.
•We have wisdom – enlightened, we can lovingly apply our knowledge to world affairs.
•We live in truth.

How have you personally experienced a shifting of applying knowledge from one level to the next?

“More important than finding the teacher is finding and following the truth of the teaching….”
— Sogyal Rinpoche

“There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul.”
— Arnold Bennett

Self-Realization
“Spiritual living is a fulfillment from moment to moment, in which the outer person is in a state of living rapport with the inner being and becomes an extension thereof.”

-N. Sri Ram (1889 – ?) Thoughts for Aspirants, 1972

A lot of times we tend to separate our “outer life” from our “inner life.” Maybe we’re working at a job we hate just for the money, while our heart aches for something more. Or we can’t seem to find that certain relationship we’re longing. We can come up with all kinds of justifications for these things. But there’s always a solution. To fully integrate ourselves, we’ve got to make our outer life an extension, or an expression, of our inner life. We’ve got to develop that rapport spiritually within so that we understand how much power we have to create anything in our lives.

Daily Good: George Orwell: Some Thoughts on the Common Toad

Novelist and essayist Eric Arthur Blair, pen name George Orwell, is perhaps best known for his prescient depictions of creeping totalitarianism and social injustice as captured in 1984 and Down and Out in Paris and London. Blair is also recognized as an avowed appreciator of the living world who intuitively understood nature’s role in transforming the human spirit in the aftermath of war: “I think that by retaining one’s childhood love of such things as trees, fishes, butterflies and to return to my first instance toads, one makes a peaceful and decent future a little more probable…” In his thought-provoking essay, Isaac Yuen explores the remarkable capacity for wonder and compassion that exemplifies Blair’s writing in “Some Thoughts on the Common Toad,” an ode to one of Earth’s most humble inhabitants

BREAK OUT OF ROUTINE

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.”
— Nietzsche

Where do you need to do some ‘out of the box’ thinking and living?

We are creatures of habit, of patterns. While initially the habits may have served us, they may now be limiting our ability to experience more of life.

What aspect of your life has become routine? How might you bring new life to it? Do some outrageous dreaming! Then do something completely different today.

Self-Realization
“King Henry: Presume not that I am the thing I was;
For God doth know, so shall the world perceive,
That I have turn’d away my former self.”

-Shakespeare (1564-1616) Henry IV, 1597

I like this because Shakespeare says here “I have made the choice- I have chosen to change” – and that is such a powerful statement. We always have that choice. We can always “reinvent” ourselves. And when we mean it, it works! There are a lot of people in the media who are examples of this – the former “loose image” actress turned mother and Sunday school teacher – the former rock-n-roller who is now a gospel singer. Part of this is knowing who we are – and understanding that how the world perceives us, how we present ourselves, is totally up to us.
